TRACK RECORD Have You Heard was released in 1989 on the studio album Letter From Home. A live version has also been released on The
Road To You and is worth a listen. It can be revealing to check out live footage of artists in action, so check out the live DVD We Live Here; Live In Japan, which features a blistering version of Have You Heard played at around 30bpm quicker than the original album version!

[Bar 29 to 36] The bridge features a melody played on the second string. The finger slides are an important part of the embellishment and Pat Metheny uses
these slides and glisses regularly, since they add fluency and sophistication, even to quite complex lines like these.

PLAYING TIPS
CD TRACK 9
[Bars 37 - 124] Hold onto your hats, it’s time to take flight! The solo is very
played slowly and there is so much to learn by studying this solo. To help with the performance various picking and fingerings directions have been notated for the super tricky parts. Metheny uses a mixture of alternate and economy picking (playing notes on adjacent strings with a single stroke). It is worth checking out the fingering and picking directions for the ideas used in bars 79-82, 91-95 and 113-115 as these are particularly challenging.
challenging to play and features a relentless string of semiquaver phases at 150bpm. To learn this solo note for note and perform it at tempo will stretch even the most seasoned guitarist. If this is beyond your current limitations don’t be put off, as great satisfaction can be had from mastering just one or two of these ideas at a slower tempo. The phrases still sound great when

[Bar 69 - 70] Not all jazz guitar playing involves exotic scales: over Cm7 Metheny plays C minor Pentatonic (C E b F G Bb ) albeit with D added (2nd/9th of C minor).
The three sets of descending phrases are a great chops workout.

CD TRACK 9
[Bar 79 - 81] Metheny sets up a fresh intervallic pattern here implying a GmII sound: fundamentally Cm7 arpeggio (C E b G B C B b with almost no G usage) with F
(11th) and D (9th) added. At Bar 81 he moves the pattern up to create the same sound over C#m7.

HAVE YOU HEARD { PAT METHENY PLAYING TIPS
CD TRACK 9
[Bar 129 to end] This melody section is the same as at the start, only the key is a tone higher. The melody is played in a lower octave than before so it will require
a bit of extra study to learn the fingerings. The track ends with a repeating single-note phrase that will seem like the easiest thing you have ever played after what has gone before. For this GT version, a new ending has been arranged that brings the track to a close in this slightly abridged format. Good luck!
