Plants need food substance called carbohydrates which are essential for the energy needs of living things. Plants make carbohydrates from carbon and water. The process by which plants make carbohydrates is called photosynthesis. Here is a simplified explanation of what happens during photosynthesis. In the first stage of photosynthesis, a substance known as chlorophyll absorbs sunlight. Chlorophyll is a green substance in leaves, and it is somehow able to trap the energy in sunlight and use it in the process of making carbohydrates. Within the leaf there is a small amount of water. In the last century, quantum leaps in technological development in various fields of science led to an unsurpassed level of achievement in the fields of Medicine, Space Travel and Electronics. Nowhere is this advancement more apparent than in the discipline of Cardiac Surgery. Till almost the end of last century, most diseases of the heart were not clearly understood and even the presence of such conditions were diagnosed only post –mortem. Diagnosis in life was restricted to a few conditions, mostly dubbed as heart failure and treated with little more than bed rest, sunshine and comforting words. Today, it is possible to repair or replace a leaking or a narrowed heart valve, plumb the narrowed or blocked arteries, close a hole inside the heart, create new channels or close unwanted ones with reasonable amount of certainty. When the whole of muscle of the heart becomes diseased, since Christian Bernard in 1967 transplanted the first human heart, a new heart is transplanted in its place. Today a heart transplant is a clinical reality. Hearts are also being grown in laboratories by cloning and cell line culture techniques. These methods of ‘organ –pharming’ already exist and will become a clinical reality in the near future. 11. Expand the following in about 100 words
