Mee the

We have a chat with Clare Curd, Cur d, expert car card d maker and esenter!! pap paper p apercraft craft television presenter

Designer…

What first attracted you to card making? I got into card making when I was pregnant with my son Joseph, who’s now nine. I’d been doing cross stitch for about 16 years but wanted something a little more ‘instant’, so I bought a couple of books on card making and was hooked. Little did I know it would change my life forever! When did crafting become a career for you? After my maternity leave I went back to work as a nurse on an intensive care unit, but I just couldn’t get card making out of my head. I lived, ate, slept and breathed it! About six months later I began working for Docrafts as an in-store demonstrator. Then I started doing more national work for them such as at the Hobbycrafts show at the NEC, and another six months or so after that I plucked up the courage to leave nursing.

What’s your favourite crafting memory? Oh wow! That’s a hard one. I met my bestest ever friend, Sheila Halliwell, through working with Docrafts, and I’ve lost count of the amount of times we’ve cried with laughter when sharing hotel rooms at shows! But I think my favourite crafting memory is getting to work in Australia for two weeks – it was amazing. What crafting tool could you not do without? Am I allowed two? It would have to be a really good quality guillotine, as I can’t cut a straight line for toffee. Second would be the Silhouette Cameo. It’s so versatile, and my ‘go to’ machine every time. What crafting trends are you loving at the moment? I love kraft cardstock – teamed with white, it’s a winner in my eyes. I also love the geometric patterns that are so trendy at the

Clare began her craft career as an in-store demonstrator for Docrafts before leaving nursing for good

moment. Whatt I love most, though, is the diversity: everything is a trend for each individual crafter ter and that’s what’ t’ss important… to love what you do.

Clare loves taking hold of current trends and then giving them her own twist in her handmade cards.

Describe a typical working day for you… … I don’t have a typical day! I usually wake at 7am and take my two greyhounds for a walk. Then I get stuck into work. I might be putting products online, making cards, tidying my craft room (!), sorting stock or checking invoices. Then I might get an email asking me to demonstrate, work or teach and instantly my whole day changes. But I always make time for drama group and a glass of wine on a Sunday night with my friends! What are you working on at the moment? Things are unbelievably hectic right now! I have a new(ish) online boutique and I’m working tirelessly to make it great. I have new stock coming in all the time and it’s hard to be disciplined about sorting it out as all I want to do is play with it! I’m also working for Bid.tv as a craft presenter and this takes up a lot of my time. But I love it all.

What are your top three papercraft techniques? Firstly, stamping without a doubt, because it’s so versatile and allows me to be an artist without being able to draw! Secondly, I like making gifts with papercrafts, such as canvases, notebook covers and the like. Finally, I wouldn’t be without my Silhouette Cameo machine. Tell us more about your TV presenting! I present Bid.tv’s Crafti Creations on Tuesdays, currently at noon. It truly is SO exciting! I’m like a child in a sweet shop! www.clarecurdcrafts.co.uk

hristmas wouldn’t be Christmas if it wasn’t for the flourish of vivid red poinsettias! Their bold petals and simple shape are perfect for creating festive cards. Zoë’s first design uses a rich, deep red coloured felt, which has been folded and stitched together to make up a single bloom. Next, Zoë raided her button box to create this red and white button wreath, complete with four mini poinsettias. For her final card, she’s used a simple cut out technique to make a layered flower, with additional stitched effect details. There’s sure to be one that catches your eye!

Crafty Confessions!

I really wanted to share one of my latest cards with you. I was asked by a friend to make a wedding card featuring two rubber ducks, with the colour theme as Cadbury chocolate, wording! Well first of all I and special w laughed and thought it was maybe a joke. A wedding card with rubber ducks? They couldn’t be serious! Well, they were! And as ever I’m always up for a challenge, no matter how daunting. This is the final result and I’m in love with it. The bride and groom were thrilled – I doubt anybody else would have sent them a card like this! I’m now looking forward to the next strange request! Julie Seager, from Staffordshire You certainly rose to the challenge, Julie! What a fab, fun card. We look forward to hearing about your next creation!

Our readers have been telling us about the pickles they get themselves into when card making! Helen T, on Facebook “I spilt a pot of liquid red ink all over the wipe-clean table cover on our dining table. It took ages to get the stains off!” Laura McN, on Facebook “The lid was off the glitter tub when someone switched my on-desk fan on… I’m still finding it weeks later!” Lisa H, on Facebook “I forgot the Stickles I used on a card were still wet when I stacked a batch of cards to put away for future use. I had stickles on the back of every card I made! Mind you, I found out that after I let them dry completely I could just scrape them off and they were good as new. Phew!”

Letter we love most Sunny proposal I made this card for my son for his engagement. He and his girlfriend were on holiday in Egypt when he popped the question (she said yes!). On the way back from the airport they called to say they were coming by to show me the ring. I then went into panic mode – I needed to make a card and quick! As I have only made birthday cards up to now, I wasn’t sure if I had anything suitable in my stash. Thankfully the free gift that came with issue 113 – the Fizzy Moon characters – came to my rescue. Phew! Thank you for the inspiration. Andrea Hughes, from Rochdale

What a lovely card, Andrea – no doubt they were thrilled to receive it.

Dinosaur days

I have seriously been lacking crafting motivation recently and then issue 116 dropped through my door! I saw the fantastic retro caravan cards on page 29 and knew straight away I would have to make one for my parents’ wedding anniversary. Thank you so much for helping get my crafting mojo back! Lesley Wood, from Worcester What a cute card, with its delicate watercolour backdrop. It’s always wonderful to hear we’ve helped inspire our readers – here’s to your refound mojo, Lesley!

When my son was invited to his best friend’s birthday party I knew exactly which card I was going to make for him. He was turning five, is autistic and loves anything everything ‘dinosaur’. T-Rex definitely and everythin fitted the bill. I tried to make it as tactile as possible. He loved his card, and spent ages playing with Rexy’s opening and closing mouth. Thank you for all your wonderful ideas – I always manage to find a design that suits the person I am making it for. Des Williams, from Middlesex What a fabulous design, Des! We love the spotty background. We’re glad you were able to put our dinosaur templates from issue 104 to such good use.

Sue Atkinson, from Brampton We’re delighted you’ve discovered a new craft, Sue, and happy that we inspired memories of happy childhood days!

How to... create a snow-filled shaker Shaker cards are such fun! Mandy-Jane Taylor shows how to make one in just eight steps…

1 Using the CD-ROM, print off two backing papers from the Design Set section of the CD-ROM. Layer up with raspberry card on a white card blank.

tip If you don’t have any pom-poms then iridescent or white glitter would also work well. Remember not to overfill your card so the glitter has room to move!

2 Add lace and ribbon to a strip of raspberry card and adhere this to the card front. Use the CD-ROM to print off the Barkley topper at A5 size on to card and cut with the oval die.

3

4

5

Add glitter to the topper image at this point. Die-cut a lacy oval from white card, then cut a plain oval using the oval die, from its centre to create a lacy oval frame.

Next, die-cut a slightly larger oval from acetate and glue it securely to the back of the lacy oval frame to create your shaker card window.

Cut a 3x28cm white card strip. Score at 0.8cm along the long edges. Cut notches along the length of both sides. Bend one set of notches facing inwards and the other set outwards.

When window is dry, glue to the card using the 3D glue gel. Die-cut snow snowflakes, layer up and glue to the card together with pearls and a ribbon bow to finish the project.

I really enjoyed making this project – the images really come to life when they’re coloured in. In my opinion, a Christmas card without glitter is like Christmas Day without snow, so I added Stickles glitter accents. When colouring falling snow, I find it’s easiest to colour over them, rather than around them and, when the ink is dry, go over them with a white opaque pen. If you want to batch make cards with the same stamped image, choose an image which you have coloured and are happy with, scan it into your PC and print out several times. You can then glitter them all individually and no-one will know the difference!

Gail Norris

You can do so much with this fantastic CD-ROM. It’s really easy to create backgrounds, toppers and sentiments (and a lot more!) and you can change the colour to whatever you want! I used sticky foam pads to give some dimension to my card as it really didn’t need anything else doing to it, apart from some colourful paper and a pretty bow! Plus, I used an image to personalise the inside of the card for continuity. The images of Barkley are gorgeous – so expressive! – and lots of things on the CD-ROM could be used all through the year. I must also mention the gift box template – it’s great because you can re-size it depending on the gift!

Julie Selby

These images are great for Christmas and I loved Mandy-Jane’s projects – very inspirational. I had a Barkley’s rubber stamp to play with and, for my Let it Snow card, I used ProMarkers to colour the image in. I cut the image with a Spellbinders die but it was the largest die in the set, so to make the red border I cut semi-circles and stuck them around the edge overlapping each other. I’m pleased with the result and will use the technique again. All that was needed then was a couple of silver snowflakes and a greeting, and I layered everything on plain card and printed paper. For the shaker card I used small silver dots for snow.

Karen Walsh

They’re so cute – who wouldn’t fall in love with this pair of scallywags? To start, I layered and matted some Hot off the Press coordinated Christmas papers for the base. I used my ProMarkers to colour the stamped image of Barkley, then I used a snowy border punch to just edge my image for a lace-like effect. The punched out snowflakes were added to the background to tie in to the overall structure, and to finish I found a metal snowflake charm waiting for a job in my stash, so I ran it through my sticker maker before positioning on to my card. I think it finished it

32

off nicely. I normally go over the top and stick loads of embellishments on my work, but I think there was no need with this lovely image.

These printables are great for producing cards in bulk, and lend themselves to embellishing in lots of different ways. I like making little scenes with my cards, so the Santa and snowman figures were perfect. I used white sparkly card to contrast with the snowman and cut the pine trees for the background in plain and flourish green with a favourite Sizzix die. I added a ribbon to the sack, pale blue gems for the Snowman’s eyes and sewed real buttons over the printed ones down his tummy. For the final touches, I opened a pack of buttons and added a poinsettia to the snowman and a parcel to Santa – along with a button list of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ children to encourage good behaviour in the run-up to Christmas!

Jane Hewes

I decided to make an easel card for my project – I love the idea that you can see the top and the inside of the card at the same time as I like to make the inside as good as the front of the card. I have layered different shades of green with some gold mirror card for the base card. I loved the idea of the train and all the stacked presents so decided to put them together. The sentiments are brilliant for using as the topper for the card. The printables are easy to re-size so you could make the train and presents as small or as large as you want. I am going to turn the piles of presents into some tags as well. To give my card a bit of shine I have used some Crafter’s Companion Spray and Sparkle – the perfect festive finish!

Russell Jones

I’m not always a fan of printables as the results you get are very dependent on the quality of your printer, but Naomi’s solid and bold colours have changed my mind – I’m very pleased with the outcome. I particularly like the pile of presents, so made these the main focus for my stepper card. As someone with big hands I was pleased that they are very easy to cut out – although I did cut off a few tags on the presents! I already had the tree design waiting for the perfect project, so I finished this with liquid pearls, then mounted it on to an oval of star-print card. I kept it all quite simple because I love the less polished, more traditional elements of Christmas, and Naomi’s illustrations really fit the bill!

Score & fold a triangular Christmas tree Score and fold three triangles down the centre and glue them back-to-back. Try the same technique with circles as baubles or snowmen! By joining an odd number of shapes, you can open out and flatten down the central one to put it into an envelope.

Make an on-trend shield mount!

Recreate a cosy clubhouse feel with this fun 3D stag head mounted on its own corrugated card shield. The cardstock forms a sturdy base for the super-fun multi-sectional die-cut stag head, while the rusty wire and checked ribbons lend a rustic feel.

5

Quill yourself a Christmas tree Corrugated card brings a lovely texture to traditional quilling techniques. Simply roll up a long strip of corrugated card, allow it to unfurl slightly then pinch it at three points to create a triangle.

7

Focus on a fluted die-cut frame Corrugated card works so well with dies and a die-cut frame makes the perfect surround for any focal point. It cuts cleanly, and due to its thickness, the cut edges take on that slightly embossed imprint you get with some dies, which doesn’t always show up on thinner materials.

Sweeten up a white corrugated candy cane by adding some quick inky red stripes. Any firm, flat ink pad, wiped back and forth over the surface, will transfer colour on to the ridge tops. The colour can’t get any further down leaving you with completely colourful stripes! Papercraft

9

Look to the heavens with a stripy star Play with the direction of the corrugated ridges. When using the template to cut out each section of the star, alternate between cutting out segments which have stripes running horizontally, vertically and diagonally.

10

Embellish a notebook

Create a quick and easy notebook or minialbum spine with a strip of corrugated card and a book ring. It’s the flexible nature of the card that comes in useful here, and the addition of a spine adds a professional touch to an otherwise basic tag book.

tips Top tricks for corrugated card! B For corrugated card to curl you need to cut the strip so that the corrugated ridges run horizontally across it. B Use corrugated card wherever you want to introduce quick, mess-free texture. Things like house roofs, tree branches and seaside scenes work well. B Create raised strips by cutting between the vertical ridges. Use them to make lines of raised edges for recreating things like fences, ladders and railway tracks.

Die-cutting project

How to... cut & emboss a dimensional Die-cut and emboss an on-trend Christmas tree card with these eight easy steps…

1 Cut 10.5x15cm of red card and layer with slightly smaller green card and patterned paper. Type the sentiment and print on light yellow card. Adhere to the back of the panel.

tip Inking over your embossed designs can sometimes create a film that makes it difficult for glue to adhere to – lightly sanding the area where the glue is to go will help it stick.

2 Die-cut the Circle Charm from red card and ink over it with white ink, then die-cut and add the medium and small flower from the Winter Elements Border Strip. Thread with twine.

3

4

5

Carefully emboss three trees on to rectangles of green card using the Sizzix Textured Impressions Embossing Folder – Winter Leaves and the Sizzix Big Shot machine.

Cut out the triangle of card for each of the trees and, using white pigment ink, rub over the top on the negative side to make the embossed sections stand out.

Score down the centre of two of the embossed trees. Adhere the two scored trees together in the centre. The unscored tree will be the first you will glue on to your card.

Share hints & tips with our Papercraft Testers! Carol Findon

For my first project I chose to cut out four trees in different glitter card (red, green, silver and gold) and, using a score board, scored the middle and joined all four together. I rested the tree on the top of a small glass bowl containing a battery-powered candle. I cut out poinsettias using a Tim Holtz die, and layered them together with a brad. I then stuck them around the sides of the glass bowl, and I had a table decoration – magic! I could have continued playing with this die for ages. I then used the tree cut-outs to create a very ‘blingy’ card. Nothing was wasted, because I used the cut-out shapes left from the trees to make decorative bunting at the top of the card! I used a little glitter ribbon at the base of the card for the finishing touch.

Karen Foy

Jen Nelson

I thought these designs were very Scandinavian so I used a red and white colour scheme. I die-cut the border and cut it in half, layering it up to make a background. I embossed a snowy background on white card and added my borders, covering the join with spotty ribbon. I stamped the tree in red ink which I layered up using my labels die before I matted the whole design on gold and red card. I then used my off-cuts to make a quick and simple matching gift tag!

I love Sizzix, so when I opened up this month’s tester project I was so excited. Once again the instructions are easy to use and as always I used them as inspiration to add my own design twist. The little tree dies and matching stamps are perfect for creating really quick and easy Christmas scenes and you could easily mass produce these cards to send out to friends and family. Add a quick sentiment and a bit of glitter and you are finished!

Kerry Hickton

I thoroughly enjoyed this project and think that the Christmas die has so many possibilities, not just for card making but for all types of Christmas creations. I decided to emboss my trees with white embossing powder and a snowflake stamp to match my papers – you could use this technique with any stamp. I have fallen in love with the flowers and snowflakes die, it was so nice to build my poinsettia up, and I can imagine building the snowflakes up as well – it would be fun to try building up layers with different papers like vellum or glitter paper.

Be on-trend with text prints! “Mixing a text-filled design in the background with one designed as a border strip makes for a quick and easy page title that catches your eye without the expense and fuss of letter stickers,” says Shimelle.

Remember yuletide joy this season with Shimelle Laine’s Christmassy ideas…

O

f course the biggest task for holiday papercrafters is a stack of beautiful Christmas cards, but we’re also partial to the beauty of all those Christmas memories too. Shimelle says, “Whether you scrapbook all year round or just keep a special book of the most important moments of your life, your family’s holiday celebrations

– especially at this time of the year – capture some of the happiest memories of time spent with loved ones that we sometimes take for granted. Often, these times include people we only see once a year, or even less often, so keeping a record takes on special meaning. “These days it seems everyone is equipped with a fancy phone or a digital

camera, so 2013 could be the year you start capturing moments from everyone’s perspective. Ask people to send you their photos after gatherings so you can include them in your pages. “Stockings, crackers, presents, the tree and meals can all be kept in your Christmas album, ready for holiday nostalgia in the years to come.”

Scrapbook inspirations Keep the balance right “It’s often easiest – and most affordable – to work with standard 4x6 photo prints,” says Shimella. “Although you can pile on plenty when needed, two to three on a 12x12 page gives you a great balance of space for the photos, recording the memory in writing, and dressing things up in your unique crafting style.”

Taking things to the edge When adding embellishments over the edge of a photo, take a look at the picture and evaluate the space. Here, I’m not losing any of the story by adding a little something to the top corner since it’s just hiding a bit of the door frame. Maintain the personal space of your photo’s subject by leaving some breathing room between their face and the pretty extras.

tips Three is the perfect number To keep from losing small embellishments on a large page, think in terms of three. Shimelle advises, “Form groupings of three items in a triangle around the most important parts of the page, and make sure each grouping has three elements – such as tape, wood veneer and enamel dots.”

Mix and match for the best combo Mixing supplies from different collections can seem like a challenge, but so many Christmas collections have things in common that make it simpler. Of course, red and green appear in abundance, but look for repeating motifs too – on this page the journaling card, photo overlay, and chipboard pieces all included Christmas bunting in about the same size. That starting point made a great way to incorporate a variety of supplies as if they were always meant to be together.

B Don’t hide behind the camera this Christmas! Make sure someone takes your picture too. If you’re nervous, start with some silly faces! B Many scrapbookers collect paper memorabilia. Flyers and tickets, or a well-loved page from the toy section of a gift catalogue can all help tell your story. B If you love creating pages but struggle when it comes to writing accompanying comments, try keeping a Christmas journal and note down one detail each day.

Pop-up cards

There is no end to the ideas you can create with pop-up cards. Achieving a dimensional result can be done easily and they look astounding…

1

BEGINNER

o you catch yourself making the same style of card over and over? If so, it’s worth reminding yourself to try out something a bit more adventurous… like a pop-up card! What better time to try something special than at Christmas?

Turn over now to find out how it’s done!

The best thing about the techniques demonstrated here is that, while the end results may look impressive, the steps to achieve them are straightforward. And once you’ve mastered them, you can adapt them to suit any occasion at any time of the year.

Create a scene with acetate strips Shopping list Basic card kit, plus Papermania papers and tartan ribbon – Christmas in the Country; and Spots & Stripes: Festive, both available from One Stop Craft Shop* Papermania acetate, from One Stop Craft Shop*

Create a friendly robin to help you deliver your Christmas message with this fun free-floating pop-up design. It couldn’t be simpler to add this element of surprise to your card. It’s made from just two strips of acetate trapped between tabs from two rectangles of card. The items you choose to add to the tops of the acetate are what really bring this card to life. Try it with row of baubles, a line of trees, a large stamped greeting, even a special family photograph… the options are endless!

tip For a neat, tidy and professional finish, cut an additional robin, luggage tag and edge-punched strip from plain kraft card and add them to the reverse of the designs. This will hide the sticky tape.

Cut two rectangles of plain card to 12x14cm. On both sections of the card, measure 1cm in from the edge of the width, score a line down the full length of the card and fold them over to create long tabs.

76

3

Now cut out two strips of acetate. One needs to measure 2x9cm and one needs to be slightly shorter at 2x6cm. The longer strip is for holding up the robin, once completed, and the shorter one is for the tag.

Cut out a robin body from a small piece of kraft card. Cut out a white stomach and the all-important red breast using red patterned papers. Stick the stomach and breast to the kraft card body.

Masterclass tip

1

You can add all kinds of elements to the acetate strips – but, before sticking them down, close the card over just to make sure that nothing will end up poking out beyond the card base once it’s closed.

4 On to the back of the finished robin stick the longer acetate strip using a short strip of double-sided tape. Now cut out a luggage tag from kraft card and fix the shorter acetate strip to the back of it.

5 Run double-sided tape along the long tabs of both sections of cardstock. Position the robin and tag along one of them. Push the two long tabbed sections together to ‘trap’ the acetate strips between them. Press down firmly.

6 Cut a strip of kraft card to 2.5x14cm and punch out a decorative edge along it. Fix it to the front facing upright tab across the card. This will hide where you joined the two card sections together and create a neat finish.

border punch * X-Cut – Scallop, from One

Surprise someone with a pop-out gift under the Christmas tree with this great card design. It’s easier than you might think! There are a lot of different pop-up designs that involve cutting into the spine of a folded card and this one, which requires just two cuts and two score lines, is a great one for you to try out first. Then, once you’ve mastered the method and are really comfortable with it, you could cut out more than one parcel. You could even flip the card around 90 degrees and have the parcels popping out from the other direction too for a truly exceptional festive greetings card!

tip A good way to ensure the folds in your pop-up cards are neat and sharp is to first crease the card, then fold it one way and then the other way.

Cut some kraft card to 15x20cm and fold in half lengthways to form a 10x15cm card blank. Along the fold, measure 2cm from the left-hand edge and 5cm from the right-hand edge and make a mark at each point.

78

Papercraft

2

3

Starting from those marks, measure 4cm across and draw a straight line. Use scissors, or a craft knife for a neater edge, to cut into the card along both of the 4cm-long lines. Make sure your cutting is precise.

Open up the card. Now gently score a straight line between the two 4cm slits you made, joining them together. Repeat this process on the other half of the card – the scores and cuts will make a rectangle shape.

Masterclass 2

INTERMEDIA TE

LEVEL

tip Make sure you wrap your ribbon around the patterned paper and not the pop-out parcel itself. The pop-out section is a tight fit with the spine of the card – anything you wrap around it will get trapped and prevent the card from closing properly.

4 Now gently begin to manipulate the scored lines to push this now free-floating centre section from the reverse of the card, through into the front. Handle it gently so it doesn’t get damaged by tearing.

5 Once the middle section has been eased through into the front, close up the card and use a creaser tool or bone folder to flatten off all the folds along the card. This will give you a sharp edge along all the folds.

6 Wrap the pop-up parcel with patterned paper cut to 8x8cm and add a ribbon. Pop the entire structure inside a large square card and decorate as though the parcel is sitting beneath a Christmas tree.

Keep ProMarkers safe and sound

Q A Use a stencil to give your embossed designs a really professional result.

I love my new ProMarkers and want to make sure I keep them clean and the colour lasts as long as possible – any tips on how to take care of them properly? Stacey Broughbeth, Stone Sarah says… To keep your Proarkers in great condition, store them away from heat and direct sunlight in a box, pen holder or whatever storage works best for you – they can be stored lying down or standing up depending on your space and storage preference. Always make sure both end caps are sealed tightly before putting them away – you’ll hear a little ‘click’ when they’re on properly. The nibs clean themselves as you use them but if you’ve used a light colour over a dark one and your nib is stained simply scribble on to some scrap paper for a few seconds and your nib will be clean again!

Q A

I’d love to try embossing but can’t afford an embossing machine at the moment – but I’ve heard I could dry emboss by hand – what does this involve? Gina Jones, Tetbury Clare says… You can definitely dry emboss by hand, indeed this was the only way of creating an embossed image before embossing folders were invented! You will need a light box, or something to create a shadow of light (a torch under a glass table has the same effect), a brass stencil and an embossing tool. Place the stencil on your light box and the paper to be embossed over the top. The light will allow you to see the stencil through the paper. Just rub the embossing tool where the gaps are in the stencil, following the outline on large areas. If the tool drags on the paper, rub the tool into soap – this will make it glide better. Try embossing on to vellum, textured card and mirror board for amazing effects!

I’m finding I have trouble keeping my ruler steady when using a craft knife to cut a straight edge or scoring card. Do you know of anything on the market that will stop it from slipping around? Rebecca Dilsburn, Ipswich Angela says… Yes, there is! Crafting Sheets are designed exactly for this purpose. We’ve tried Stix 2 Anything’s Non Slip Grip and found it really works. Just press it against whatever you want to prevent moving and you can cut, score, or measure with confidence. It’s available to buy from www.stix2.co.uk and costs £1.79.

Easy creases

Q

I love making gift boxes and pillow boxes – but I’m finding it difficult to get neat creases when I’m folding my templates – I know there are scoring boards for creating card blanks – do you know of any that will help me to score unusual 3D boxes and so on? Viv Proud, Durham Claire says… There are various tools on the market that are designed to help you get nice crisp folds. One essential tool is a bone

A

folder – you can run the tip against a metal edged ruler to create the score, then use the side of the tool to get a crisp fold. It’s simple and effective! If, however, you are looking for something a bit more advanced, you could try Hobbycraft’s* A4 5-in-1 Paper Trimmer, which has a built in scoring function that will give you a fabulous score in an instant and make it easy to create 3D gift boxes in all kinds of shapes.

Claire Brudenell, Marketing Executive for Trimcraft ft and d keen k crafter, gives her top three tips for perfect punching…

1

It’s often difficult to cut materials such as vellum or tissue paper in a punch, but try putting a piece of heavier weight paper on top while cutting – you will find it slices through the lighter paper too.

2

If your punch is getting a bit blunt, try sharpening it with medium grain sandpaper, just a few times through the punch will sharpen it up. Baking foil can also be used in the same way.

3

Don’t throw away any punched out shapes – they can come in useful for making quick cards. Use with foam squares to make they stand out from the paper.

Gingham-print and Merry Christmas ribbons are particularly popular at this time of year!

Behind the scenes Fantastic Ribbons

Keith Edwards from Fantastic Ribbons explains how he and his co-founder Ben Clarke went from supplying florists to meeting the needs of crafters everywhere! How long has Fantastic Ribbons been running for? The business was established in 1999, initially supplying ribbon to florists. We soon recognised a huge demand for quality ribbon at great prices so we launched a craft division in 2002 specialising in ribbons on the roll. Papercrafters have been the greatest supporters of our products, which has helped our business boom! We launched out buttons range two years ago due to many requests from

84 Papercraft

our crafters – we now hold more than 330,000 rolls of ribbon and four tons of buttons in stock at our warehouses. What inspired you to launch the business? My previous life was as an interior designer for the hospitality market and I have always loved working with textiles and colour. I still have sketches, ideas, trends and pantone colour charts on my desk! Ben Clarke is the other co-founder – he is the accountant

on the business and thus keeps my buying budgets in check. What was involved in starting up the company? Market research is very important to us, so when we decided to launch into the craft and hobby sector we booked a stand at our local craft exhibition here in Exeter. At the start, we only stocked 50 lines, which were plain satins and organzas, and the offering today is over 700 lines! We had a very exciting first day – as soon as the doors opened visitors flocked to us, and we had to nip back to our warehouse for more stock each day. We believed we had found a gap in the market – historically ribbon had been sold by the metre and not by the consumer roll, and we wanted to add value to the customers’ experience of shopping with us, so we began the multi-buy offers for which we have become famous – the more rolls you buy the more you save! After that first show, we worked hard to improve ranges and identify our customers’ needs, very soon after this we launched our website.

Behind the scenes How big is the team at Fantastic Ribbons? Who does what? We are a family-run business and have various packers and pickers, including my sprightly mum of 77, IT and a small team of outsourced designers who make up samples of projects which appear on our blog, website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and our exhibition stand. How do you decide on your in-house ribbon designs? Since our first amazing craft show we have exhibited in over 250 venues at all the major craft

grosgrains at 10mm wide – it has the stitch in the centre which can be pulled up in the middle to make a ruffle. We also launched our 15mm stitch edged ribbon in reds, greens and blues ready for the festive season. Next month sees the arrival of new sparkly Christmas ribbons, which are a mix of satin, organza and golden thread that are ideal for papercafting as they make perfect bows and come in shades of bordeaux red, honey gold, and chocolate brown, along with the old favourites of white, purple and dark green.

What’s been the highlight for Fantastic Ribbons so far? Without a doubt, our customers. We have met, and continue to meet, the most amazing bunch of people as we see over 500,000 visitors at our stands – we always find this a joy as we are dealing with happy people.

What are the latest trends for featuring ribbons and washi tapes in card designs? Washi is still big and enduring themes include homespun and vintage-inspired colours such as our snowflakes on twill tapes and mulberry button packs, along

What’s next for Fantastic Ribbons? New releases include an antique style lace in October and additional soft colours to our gingham and country check ranges and then loads of surprises for 2014!

By watching and listening to our customers we are able to react to trends quicker than most. How often do you bring out new ribbon and washi tape ranges? We aim to bring out new lines every month, last month it was a superb new plain beautiful grosgrain collection in candy pinks, limes, peacock blues and clotted cream colours which arrived in two widths of 10mm and 25mm. The thrifty

cra ter! Kirsty Neale simply loves an upcycling challenge. This month she transforms an old cassette tape into a work of art with a retro personality: a card and music voucher combo!

C

onsidering the subject of The fun part comes in taking this month’s project, the tape to pieces. You’ll need a perhaps I shouldn’t admit tiny screwdriver (or the point of a I was never a huge fan sharp knife) to remove the of cassettes. All that corner screws, then it’s fast-forwarding a case of snapping, “They’re easy to and rewinding popping and find in charity shops to find the start peeling the whole of the song you and usually cost less than thing apart! the price of a sheet of wanted to Decorate the hear? So front and back patterned paper” annoying! Ditto, pieces with patterned accidentally recording paper, or maybe a special over a once-in-a-lifetime concert mix-tape message, then stick each recording, or getting it chewed one to a piece of card. Add an and destroyed in the player. But it was all worth it because of mix tapes – possibly the best present ever. I love having all my music on one, simple digital device these days, but let’s face it – a mix playlist is never really going to cut it as a romantic gift. That said, I hope this project – a mix-tape card with a music voucher tucked inside – will bridge the gap between old school and new media, and help personalise what doesn’t always feel like the most thoughtful of presents. If you don’t have any old cassettes at home, check out your local charity shop, where they usually cost less than the price of a sheet of patterned paper. The best tapes are those made from opaque plastic, rather than the clear, smoky-grey kind, and if you’re hoping to make several cards for Christmas, look out for audiobooks, which contain multiple tapes in a single set.

Dismantle the cassette tape by unscrewing it. Embellish each half to your taste and stick on to your card’s front and back.

extra strip of card to make a voucher pocket, punch holes at one edge, then thread through a length of ribbon to join the front and back pieces together – it’s really that simple. Whether you’re making a whole batch for Christmas or a single card for a different occasion, it makes voucher-giving just that bit more special, and all with no chance of getting your favourite tunes chewed up!
