Introduction In SAP delivery creation, we have 2 methods of creating handling units (Packing of FG materials)

Manual Packing Here, you have to manually give all instructions (Select the relevant packing material, weight, etc) at delivery document and need to execute it.

Automatic packing As the name specifies, this can be used to pack FG materials automatically; based on pre-defined set of instructions. Once those instructions are configured, at delivery creation point, materials will be packed automatically.

Packing Material Concept Define Packing Material Types

It can be anything like boxes cartons, bags, etc. in summary it is the packing material which you used for packing.

Copy an existing packing material and create a new one.

Note that; Packing Material Category should be se to “C – Packing Materials”

Define Material group for packaging materials

In this IMG node, you specify a material group that requires similar packing materials. For example, if all shirts are packed in boxes, you can specify “Shirts” as a “Material group for packing materials”. Then box should be defined as a “Packing material type” in the previous step.

Define Allowed Packaging Materials

In this IMG node, you create a link between the “Material groups for packaging materials” (Eg: Shirts) and “Packaging material types" (Eg: Boxes). Later you have to assign this Packing Material Group to your material master (Eg: for a specific short you have to assign Boxes as packing material group) One “Material groups for packaging materials” can contain several “Packaging material types". Eg: If shirts can be packed in bags as well as boxes, then bags and boxes should defined as packing materials and Shirts should defined as packing material group. In this node you have to specify the link between Shirts to bags and boxes.

At packing creation point, if you ask system to display all packing materials relevant for a specific group, it’ll display both bags and boxes.

Create Packing Material Tx: MM01

Use material type as “VERP - Packaging material”

In the “Sales:General/ Plant screen” you have to maintain data regarding the packaging.

“MatI Grp Pack.Matls” is the Material group. In the above example it’s Shirts “Packaging mat. Type” is the packing material type you assign to this specific packing material. Since I create a box, I have to assign “Box” as packing material type to this.

For the above example, maximum packing weight in this box is 2 KG. It’ll cross check with the weight of the finished good at the point of packing.

Same manner you have to maintain the weight of the finished material in the basic data 1 screen as well. For above example I’ll create a FG as “AW 01” and assign 1KG as weight.

Manual Packing VA01 create the order, save it and create stock for that material. VL01N enter shipping point, go in the delivery document. Select Edit – pack menu option or

button to pack.

In the top part you select your Packaging Material in which you want to pack your finished item. Here you can manually enter the packing material or you can ask system to search for allowed packing materials by pressing Now select the Material in the top part and the FG in the lower part and click on the Icon

This will pack all FG’s in packing materials that you have selected, according to the allowed maximum weight.

Once packing is done, select

button, and then do the PGI.
