PURPOSE OF TESTS

The purpose of the tests is to check the full functionality of the protection relay. This procedure does not intend to check that all alarms and trips are correctly sent to the DCS or SCADA level. This part is already developed into dedicated DCS or SCADA Commissioning procedures. This procedure does not intend to check all tripping matrix and PSL logic tests, this, when applicable, are described into a separate document, dedicated to the specific substation and feeder type. 2

TEST PROCEDURES The following procedures are written for demonstrating the main protection functions of the P821 relay using an Omicron test set or similar. The tests do not test the boundaries of all available function characteristics. They do test that the function is operating at a point on one chosen characteristic. This document is to be referred to when performing commissioning tests in association with the commissioning section of the service manual.

NOTE : All the Test are performed in the Test Switch. Omicron CMC156 Test Equipment or Any Equivalent To Be Used ..

7.1 Testing the "CB Failure protection" function 7.1.1 MiCOM P821 relay parameters Note the settings of the MiCOM P821 relays are by default the following:  I>BF = 0,10 In  Delay stage 1 = tBF1 = 100ms thus retrip after 100ms*  Delay stage 2 = tBF2 = 200ms Also **  Output Relay operation (RL1, 2 and 3) if programmed (phase A, B and C)  Output Relay operation (RL4) if programmed (Backtrip) * The time delay does not take into account the opto-coupler input filtering and processing (which is 20 ms ± 1 ms.) **This Output Relays are programmed for testing purpose only after test completion, Actual Programming of utput relays to check. . 7.1.2 I>BF check 1. Energise a trip order input (A, then B, then C, then 3 phase) 2. Gradually inject the current into the 3 phases up to the stage value: retripping of the tripped phase (A, then B, then C, then A, B and C) should occur for a current equal to the stage (I>BF) to within ±2% followed by the backtrip Action check: 1. Appearance of an alarm message on the display 2. Flashing of the “Alarm” LED 3. Illumination of the “Trip” LED if tripping is programmed AREVA T&D

4. Illumination of the LEDs associated with instantaneous information 50BF 5. Output Relay operation (RL1, 2 and 3) if programmed (phase A, B and C) 6. Output Relay operation (RL4) if programmed (Backtrip) 7.1.3 Timer Check tBF1 and not tBF2 1. Inject the current 1,00 In into the 3 phases 2. Energise the trip order input 3. After tBF2 cut the current injection, the retrip of the tripped phase (A or B or C) should occur at tBF1+20ms and no backtrip shall follow Action check: 1. Appearance of an alarm message on the display 2. Flashing of the “Alarm” LED 3. Illumination of the “Trip” LED if tripping is programmed 4. Illumination of the LEDs associated with instantaneous information 50BF 5. Output Relay operation (RL1, 2 and 3) if programmed (phase A, B and C) 6. Output Relay operation (RL4) if programmed (Backtrip) 7.1.4 Timers tBF1 and tBF2 1. Inject the current 1,00 In into the 3 phases 2. Energise the trip order input 3. After tBF2 + 10ms (or more) cut the current injection, the retrip of the tripped phase (A or B or C) should occur at tBF1+20ms and followed by the backtrip at tBF2+20ms Action check: 1. Output Relay operation (RL4) if programmed (Backtrip) 7.2 Testing of Binary Inputs : This test checks that all the opto-isolated inputs on the relay are functioning correctly. (5 opto-isolated inputs for the P821). The opto-isolated inputs should be energized one at a time. Ensuring correct polarity, connect the auxiliary voltage to the appropriate terminals for the input being tested. AREVA T&D

The line "INPUTS" in the "OP. PARAMETERS" menu gives the state of each input, a '1' indicating an energized input and a '0' indicating a de-energized input. When each input is energized one of the digits on the bottom line of the display will change to indicate the new state of the inputs. 7.3 Testing of Binary Output’s : This test checks that all the output relays are functioning correctly. (8 output relays for the P821).The output relays should be energised one at a time. Connect a continuity tester across the terminals corresponding to output relay 1 . In the following window in the "Relay Satus" sub-menu of the "OP PARAMETERS" menu: Relay 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Status 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 Repeat the test for each relay. Operation will be confirmed by the continuity tester operating for a normally open contact and ceasing to operate for a normally closed contact. NOTE: It should be ensured that thermal ratings of anything connected to the output relays during the test procedure is not exceeded by the associated output relay being operated for too long. It is therefore advised that the time between application and removal of relay testing kept to the minimum. If the Outputs are assigned for function this will be tested along with Functional test of relays.
