Introduction ....................................... Maybe it was the handmade poster that some kid lettered for my very rst paying gig (as a six grade snake and reptile lecturer [!] for younger kids at my Long Island library). Or the rock posters every high schooler had to have on a late 60s bedroom wall. Somehow, I got the poster bug. 'Growing up' to become a media executive I never missed the chance to create a poster for whatever we were promoting at the time. And as the executive producer of all the cartoons in this book the chance to recreate the heyday of the theatrical animation experience grabbed me by the throat and hasn't let go.  –Fred Seibert January 2021

What A Cartoon!/W Cartoon!/World orld Premiere Toons 1995-7 1995-7 .................................................. BF (Before Frederator), I was the last President of Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, where I dropped my first big idea cartoon shorts incubator, What Cartoon!  on Cartoon It seemed to me that cartoons and,Amore importantly, theirNetwork. creators had been unjustly ignored for too long, and so I dedicated the studio to publicizing these lmmakers in every way possible. Modernizing the movie studio one sheets that accompanied classic theatrical cartoons, I asked studio creative director Bill Burnett to adapt the original art from the cartoons into the modern rock poster styles Frank Kozik introduced in the early 1990s.

The Powerpuff Girls 1995 ....................................... At 22 years old, Craig McCracken was already in the art department at 2 Stupid Dogs and on his way to art directing Dexter's Laboratory  when he showed me his student lm of "The Whoopass Girls." Some depressing focus groups didn't slow down the progress of a new name, a spiffed up design, and a genuine cultural phenomenon.

Dexter's Laboratory 1995 .......................................

Genndy Tartakovsky Tartakovsky is one of the most admired directors in cartoons and feature lms today. today. But, the Dexter's Laboratory cartoon short was his rst commercial lm and became the rst original series (and a big hit, at that) on Cartoon Network.

Yuckie Duck 1995 ....................................... I had a particular soft spot for Pat Ventura. He was not only the rst WAC! alumnus and loved classic cartoons, but he helped school me as to what made for great cartoons

We made two George and Juniors, two Yuckie Ducks and then Sledgehammer O'Possum, which really pushed the boundaries of a kids lm.

Bravo 1995 Johnny ....................................... Animator Van Partible was barely out of school when he started Johnny Bravo at Hanna-Barbera. O'Possum 1995 Sledgehammer ....................................... It's probable that my affection for Pat Ventura, his style and his fondness for "cartoon violence" allowed my judgement to go out on a limb with this one. Though it was produced earlier, programmers pushed it to the end of the WAC! run on Cartoon Network.

and Junior 1995 George ....................................... The earliest animator to sign up for the What A Cartoon! project was Pat Ventura. But, instead of contributing an original his rst time up (those would come later) Pat wanted a shot at updating Tex Tex Avery's George and Junior, a theatrical team from the Ted Turner (the Hanna-Barbera owner) controlled MGM library. library. and the only one that spun off a sequel: I Am WeaWeasel.

. . . . .Worm . . . . . . . 1997 ........................... The

Eddie Fitzgerald's vision on cartoons in the 90s was as unique as his laugh. And I thought his attempt to bring psychoanalysis into the realm of comedy animation was worth a shot. Eddie had a tough time making his nal directorial and illustrative decisions so The Worm  haditsone of the WAC! cycles, pushing debut to longest almost the endproduction of the series.

& Malcolm 1997 Melvin ....................................... Buzz Potamkin was my head of production at Hanna-Barbera and the biggest supporter of the idea of What A Cartoon! Makes sense, since when we worked together on MTV animation, Buzz was the rst person to give me unofcial tutoring in the way of the commercial cartoon business. And after two years of convincing Ted Turner and Scott Sassa (Turner's President of Entertainment) that shorts were the path to Cartoon Network's greatest successes, Buzz was the one who suggested that getting the unique, irrepressible Ralph Bakshi would be a cherry on top of our project, giving all

our unknowns a kind of Hollywood credibility. credibility. After all, Ralph began his animation career at Terrytoons before turning the world upside down with Fritz the Cat  and  and Lord of of the Rings. Ralph excited me with his desire to make a jazz musician the center of his lm, jazz being the original underpinning of H&B scores during its golden period. Added Added to his star-like luster it blinded me to the fact that while his was one of our rst greenlights, his production "process" resulted in some of the last cartoons.

Show Print, Nashville Hatch ....................................... The 1996 national board meeting of the American Institute of Graphic Arts was held in Nashville, Tennessee, Tennessee, down the street from the storied Hatch Show Print, the country music home of letterpress, woodblock printing. I fell in love with the place and its chief designer and archivist Jim Sherraden. I've had Hatch Show design and print over a dozen of my celebration posters over the years.

Goodbye Hanna-Barbera 1996 ....................................... Once Ted Turner decided to sell all his Turner Broadcasting Broadcastin g Company holdings, including HannaBarbera and Cartoon Network, it would only be a matter of time before I left. It was amazing working for a media genius like Ted Ted and I appreciated having a renegade entrepreneur as a boss. The idea of

working for a faceless corporation like Warner Warner Bros. didn't really appeal to my nature. But, after ve years of overseeing an unlikely turnaround at the legendary studio and working with hundreds of people, I found myself more emotional than I would have expected. (Maybe getting married and having a rst child during my time at the studio helped too!) I asked my newfound friends at Hatch put together a keepsake for all my co-workers. It's one of my greatest joys when I still get a note from one of them, accompanied by a snap of the poster in their home.

Studios 1997 Frederator ....................................... Illustrator Arlen Arlen Schumer –a collaborator over several years– insisted on giving me a gift for the launch of Frederator, a company birth notice. He crossbred my severely bushy eyebrows, Gigantor's nose, and my fascination with the modern poster innovator Frank Kozik. Master artist Patrick Raske provided the color and a Michigan silkscreen printer was engaged. Frederator Studios, with assistant Stephanie Stephens, came to be in North Hollywood on January 6, 1997, with our rst cartoons released in 1998.

Yeah! Cartoons 1998 Oh ....................................... What better way to celebrate our second big idea incubator (notable for the rst appearances of Butch Hartman's The Fairly Oddpar Oddparents ents and Bill Burnett's & Larry Huber's ChalkZone) but to t 39 modern cartoon titles on a limited edition poster with old fashioned wood block typography? For Frederator's rst Hatch Show collaboration we asked for their 'classic' look, and it became the perfect rememremembrance for all of our animation creators to sign at the wrap party. And here's where Frederator introduced the slogan "Original Cartoons since 1998," the catch being it actually was 1998. We're all about original talent and their original ideas, and we wanted to have a little fun. They're cartoons, after all.

New . . . . . .Year's . . . . . . .Posters .......................... The last 30 years haven't been kind to commercial posters, broadcasting and the internet have made them virtually extinct. And I thought that the Herman Miller summer picnic posters series from 1970 onward, designed by Stephen Frykholm, were a gas, so I wanted in on the action. Art posters continue to be alive and well, maybe more so with the advent of direct selling on the internet. I like being part of that select group with my (sometimes) regularly released, limited edition New Year's Year's posters.

New Year's 2002 ....................................... Frederator's expansion to a New York ofce around the turn of the century seemed like a perfect moment to inaugurate the New Year's poster program. And an expanded personnel roster (for building out media on the internet) suggested the perfect execution. Patrick Raske pulled off this digital take on an old school letterpress poster, often associated with boxing, circuses, and old rock'n'roll and country music concerts.

Drinking and Drawing Events .................................................. One night, internet animator Dan Meth had an idea. He opened a

"Drinking and Drawing" became the most experimental cartoon in his Channel Frederator hit series The Meth Minute 39. It also gave me a 'Eureka' moment. Animators need to get together more often, so why not set up an actual animation event? Starting at the 2007 Platform Animation Festival, and irregularly in cities across America, America, I sponsored –and Carrie Miller produced– a night of artists.cards 100 intrepid drawlast animation on jamming eight to fteen and handsouls off their drawingsequences to the next  jammer.. Channel Frederator & Next New Networks 2009 ....................................... Frank Olinsky was commissioned by Next New Networks (Channel Frederator's distributor) to design a series of limited edition posters for adveradvertisers and friends of the company. company. The only limitalimita tion was that all the images had to be created with his hands, a slam dunk for a resourceful artist like Frank. He referred back to the Fredbot he created for our 2006 New Year's poster, and laid it out in an homage to a famous Elvis Presley singles colleccollection. But that wasn't 'hand' enough for him, so Frank took a marker and retraced all the robots. I loved the mess.

2011 Frederator ....................................... I got my rst big career boosts because of the attention given to cable network logos for MTV and Nickelodeon I had developed with Manhattan Design and Corey MacPherson Nash. For a postcard series in 2003, Sean Adams and Noreen Morioka poked a little fun with these faux Frederator logos, then took the black & white originals and colored them for their book on, of all things, color theory. I thought it would make a nice ofce poster.

SVA February 16, 2012 .......................................

In 1972, Steven Heller was the art director at the infamous Screw Magazine(!) when he helped me out with some typesetting for the rst album I produced and released on Oblivion Records. It was a eeting encounter and while I followed his career –Steve is the world's most published author on graphic design, with almost 150 books and countcounting– there was no reason he recalled our meeting when I cold called him for something related to Hanna-Barbera Cartoons. So started an acquaintance which has heartened me for the past quarter century. And that's not all! Steve and Lita Talarico Talarico founded and are co-chairs of New York's SVA MFA program, Designer as Author + Entrepreneur. Occasionally,, they ask me to come and speak to Occasionally their group of carefully curated, supremely talented classes. This particular year it wasn't only about cartoons but about the revolution of YouTube and streaming video. I'll talk to students anywhere, anytime, rememremembering how hungry I was for any morsels of infor infor-mation that could help me get a leg up on my own inconceivable future.
