DRAWWORKS DISC BRAKES The Universal Disc Brake System consists of three major components: the discs, the hydraulic system, and the caliper assemblies.
The discs. The system uses two hardfaced discs machined from alloy steel with an internal water jacket. Disc thickness is three inches. Disc diameter is normally four to five inches greater than the band brake rim. Both braking surfaces on each disc are hardfaced with a weld overlay. The hardfacing increases disc life and minimizes surface grooving.
Improved braking reliability for drilling rigs. As drilling depths increase and hookloads get heavier, conventional band brakes are often taxed to their limits.
The hydraulics. Accurate control.
The hydraulic power unit consists of:
The brake control system, coupled with the hydraulics, provide a high degree of control.
• A stainless steel hydraulic reservoir.
No brake handle "kick-back".
The NATIONAL-OILWELL Universal Disc Brake offers these advantages over conventional band brakes.
Dragging brake bands of conventional brakes can cause severe and dangerous brake handle kickback. This cannot happen with disc brakes.
Greater holding power.
Ease of remote control.
The disc brake has significantly greater resistance to fade than a band brake, and requires less mechanical input force by the driller to control the heaviest loads.
The brake can be controlled from positions remote from the traditional driller's position without complicated mechanical systems.
Less downtime. Change out of brake pads is easy and fast. Unlike most band brakes, there is no need to worry about kinking or other damage during removal and installation. Also, access for maintenance is on the front side of the drum shaft.
Reliable operation. Conservative power ratings, redundancy, and auxiliary back-up systems all assure reliable operation.
Less noise. Significant noise reduction for drilling in noise sensitive environments.
Proven. This braking system is being used successfully on a number or rigs.
Adaptable. The disc brake system replaces band brakes, upgrading your present drawworks.
Easy to retrofit. The system is simple to install on existing NATIONAL-OILWELL drawworks.
• An electrically-driven, variabledisplacement, internally pressurecompensated hydraulic pump. • A pressure relief valve. • Two pressure reducing/relieving valves. • Four piston type accumulators. • An emergency air-driven pump and two air-piloted hydraulic valves. • Nickel plated steel block manifold. In a typical installation, the variable displacement pump is set to maintain maximum system pressure, while the relief valve will open at approximately 200 psi above the maximum pressure. This protects the system in the event of a pump malfunction. The two primary accumulators, isolated from each other by check valves, supply pressure to the two main valves at the driller's brake handle.

DRAWWORKS DISC BRAKES
Main (Service )
The hydraulic accumulators are used to improve response time and provide a short term back up pressure supply in the event the electric and air pumps fail.
Unique calipers.
Emergency Caliper
The main service caliper assembly. Depending on the size of the drawworks, there are four to six service brake calipers. Each caliper consists of a stainless steel piston that operates in a hardened stainless steel bushing contained in a stainless steel cylinder, two lever arms, and two brake pad assemblies. Changing pads or replacing calipers requires only a few minutes. The cylinders are designed to operate at maximum system pressure; however, the normal operating pressure is much less.
Spring-set parking/emergency caliper. In addition to the hydraulicallyactuated calipers, each disc brake system includes two spring-set, hydraulically-released calipers.
Main (Service ) These calipers use a hydraulic piston to compress a stack of Belleville disc springs. During normal operation, hydraulic pressure keeps the springs compressed and the parking brake released. However, in the event of complete loss of hydraulic pressure, electrical failure, or by operation of a manual valve, the springs extend and set the brake.
Not only do they act when pressure is lost unexpectedly, but they may also serve as a parking brake when the rig is idle for extended periods or while undergoing maintenance. A crown protection device can be installed in the system, which when tripped, activates the calipers.

DRAWWORKS DISC BRAKES
Dual brakes for greater safety. This is actually a dual braking system. The hydraulic circuits for the driller's side and the off-driller's side service caliper assemblies are completely independent.
Additional back-up. The air-operated back-up hydraulic pump supplies hydraulic fluid at approximately the maximum system pressure to operate the brake in the unlikely event of a primary pump failure.
Accurate control. The driller can control the main service brakes to a fine degree. Sensitive operations are accomplished with ease.
Electronic remote control package. With the growing trend to remove the operation of the drilling function to enclosed areas and driller’s cabins, NATIONAL-OILWELL can now offer the ability to electronically control the drawworks functions. Whether use of an existing band brake or with a disk brake system, the interface of the drawworks controls can be safely operated through the electronic control package.
Electronic joystick controls. Safely remove the driller from harsh environments and offer precise control of all of the drawworks functions.
Touch screen, menu driven. With the provision of electronic driller’s control screen, every function and operation of the drawworks is displayed for ease of operation and can also provide warning signals to prevent dangerous conditions and limits.
System compatible. The NATIONAL-OILWELL electronic remote control package can interface with other rig floor systems to provide a reliable, safe and integrated system.
With the installation of the NATIONAL-OILWELL electronic drawworks controls, the driller can be assured the operation of the drawworks is performing to the safe design limits and capabilities of the equipment.
Total package. With the addition of the Energy Monitor and Autodriller System a complete package which provides not only operator interface, but additional safety features to maintain safe and reliable operation in harsh environments.
Crew safety and operation limits. When the Energy Monitor System is in operation, the preset limits of safe operation are continuously monitored. If ever these limits are approached, the Energy Monitor System warns the operator of approaching limits. The system automatically applies braking functions when these limits are exceeded to bring the equipment safely under control.
Above: The automatic drilling system is designed to relieve the burden of constant actuation of the controls by the driller.
An important option. To take full advantage of the benefits afforded by the Universal Disc Brake System, NATIONAL-OILWELL offers an integrated PLC based Energy Monitor and Autodriller System. This system ensures that the maximum kinetic energy of the traveling equipment is not exceeded, while monitoring the position of the traveling equipment within preset limits of travel. It also provides precise control of bit weight when drilling.

Rotating & linear side skids. Left: With the popular patented rotating side-skid option (available with dual guide track applications) the swivel can be rotated to the side in less than 10 minutes, when a standard hook is used. With the Power Swivel off to the side, tripping proceeds faster, with less equipment wear and with lower power requirements. Most routine swivel maintenance can be performed while tripping proceeds, virtually eliminating down-time. For mast applications, or where space is limited, a linear side-skid arrangement is also available.
Gear box & two-speed transmission designs. All gear boxes have fully supported input shafts providing the most accurate gear mesh for long, troublefree, running life.
Motor mounting. NATIONAL-OILWELL Power Swivel Advantages:
• 10% to 30% reduction in drilling time. Fewer pipe connections when drilling ahead and quicker connections by remaining on bottom.
• More efficient control of directional drilling tools with fewer connections and reduced time required for resetting tool orientation.
• Reduced reaming time using triple lengths of pipe and faster setup for back reaming.
•
Requires up to 40% less maintenance than other designs.

• Significant reduction of time required to reconnect to drill pipe and re-establish well control.
• Efficient tool joint make-up with accurate control of torque for improved drill pipe life.
The DC drive motor is foot mounted above the washpipe and mud lines, driving through a shaft with crowntooth couplings. This greatly reduces sensitivity to alignment, and isolates motor shaft and bearing from overhung loads.
Patented spring-mounted roller system. Upper Right: The two-stage cantilever leaf-spring design is standard on dual guide track installations. Wheel trucks distribute forces symmetrically about the centerline. This reduces guide track fatigue failure which occurs in other systems. On the drive stem and IBOP's, bending moment is reduced.
IBOP assembly. The upper IBOP has two rotary actuators which provide direct torsional operation. This eliminates binding and overhung moment. The actuator installation eliminates stress-risers of grooved IBOP bodies.
Make-up / break-out system.
Pipe-handling assembly.
The Power Swivel uses controlled DC motor torque for make-up / break-out of the drill pipe connection. Non-rotating pipe-grabs are powered by a self-contained air-over-hydraulic system. No separate hydraulic power system is required.
Above: The four-position link kick-out allows for retracting elevators while drilling. The handling ring assembly rotates a full 360 degrees continuously and is lockable.

Patented joint locking clamps.
PS 350/500 Power Swivel stack up heights
Patented joint locking clamps assure retention of proper make-up torque relative to Power Swivel stem connections. Unintentional breakout or over make-up is prevented.
Comprehensive control console. The stainless steel purged cabinet includes: RPM meters, torque/amp meters, drilling controls, pipe handling controls, indicator lights, & alarms. Safety interlocks and safety controls protect the system. Make-up and break-out are automatically controlled. Damage to tool joint threads during spin-in is prevented. Controls provide separate adjustable drilling and make-up torque limits as well as precise control of break-out operations.
The unique NATIONAL-OILWELL Power Swivel designs are protected by U.S. Patents: 4,809,792; 4,813,498; 4,877,093; 4,981,180; & 5,038,871.
PS-350/500 Single "Mono-Track" drilling torque reaction. Left: The PS-350/500 Power Swivel is available with a single Mono-Track guide system. It fits most land cantilever masts. It reacts drilling torque into the lower portion of the mast or A-frame. Torque reaction into the upper portion of the mast is eliminated.
PS-500/500 Power swivel block. Below: The PS-500/500 is available with a special Power Swivel Block. It is available as a direct replacement for standard traveling equipment. It provides the shortest length block and Power Swivel combination. This allows for operation in smaller masts and derricks.

RHC is constantly developing new products to meet industry needs. Here is preliminary information on our latest innovations.
Block Controller. The Block Controller is a PLC-based system providing the following features: • Single joystick operation of drive, electric and disc brakes. • Kinetic energy monitoring.
ISO 9001 Certificate No. 31013
• Block position control (locates the block at two adjustable preset positions). • Power down (with minimum fast line tension). • Regenerative braking (energy absorption through the rig’s power grid or a resistor bank). • Four quadrant SCR drive (for fast transfer from power down to regenerative braking). • Control of electric brake. • Control of disc brakes (service and parking). • Auto Driller (uses the DC motors to support the weight of the drill string while drilling, not the disc brakes).

Digital modules. RHC has developed “Plug and Play” Digital Engine Generator (AC) and SCR (DC) Control Modules. The new modules were designed as a direct replacement, in many cases, for the existing analog AC and DC modules, where an operator can actually unplug an analog module, plug in the digital module, and start drilling with all the advantages digital has to offer. For example: • Communication for remote operation and monitoring.
Diagnostic status display. RHC has developed a Status Display Panel, which uses an Electroluminescence Screen to aid in system diagnostics using a combination of digital and graphic displays, covering a minimum of the following parameters: Power Supply Control Power On Phase Sequence Unbalance Input Breaker Closed System Overtemperature SCR Available Main Power On Bridge Overtemperature Field Power On Field A On Emergency Field B On Shutdown Field Forward Motor Field Reverse TemperatureVibration Field Current Output Main Breaker Overcurrent Over Current Output Overvolts
• Data acquisition of system parameters for trending and diagnostics. • Precise digital calibration without the need of hardware changes. (Resistors and capacitors). • Changes of operating parameters through a serial port of a laptop computer.
Below: “Plug and Play” Digital AC and DC Control Modules
Mud Pump Synchronizer. The Mud Pump Synchronizer is a microprocessor-based system designed to reduce pump pressure fluctuations. This is accomplished by synchronizing the pump pistons out of phase so that two or three triplex pumps act like a single six or nine piston pump.
Above: Alarms and Trips Diagnostics Display Panel
Above: Main Menu Diagnostics Display Panel
The system monitors the shaft angle of the mud pump to track piston position. The controller, in turn, adjusts the SCR throttles to synchronize the pump pistons. The Mud Pump Synchronizer includes the Console Controls, Control Processor and Position Sensors.
Power Factor Correction / Harmonic Filter. RHC offers an electronically controlled variable power factor correction using a modified threephase thyristor (SCR) bridge. The SCR Bridge controls the addition of reactive current to the Bus up to approximately 120% of maximum KVA rating of the SCR Bridge. The Power Factor of the AC Bus can be maintained at unity or at any desired set point within the limits of the maximum VARs available out of the Power Factor Corrector. This Harmonic Filter is designed to eliminate the objectionable effect of the 5th, 7th and 11th harmonics of the fundamental frequency.

SCR drives. RHC manufactures a complete line of SCR drives for the drilling industry. This equipment is designed to withstand the rigorous demands associated with the oilfield. It is easy to operate and troubleshoot. All modules of a kind are interchangeable for quick replacement. Connections are hardwired to eliminate pin contacts that are subject to contamination and loosen due to vibration. All AC Control Modules contain protection circuits such as reverse power, under frequency, over voltage, idle trip and pulse loss. A feature of the new offshore EG-3 AC Control Module is that almost all possible problems are annunciated as an alarm and time out before a trip which opens the generator circuit breaker. This AC Control Module also may be utilized to synchronize and bring generators on-line and provides for automatic sharing of KW’s and KVAR’s. All RHC AC Control Modules are compatible with Woodward’s 2301 engine controls and most Woodward’s electric engine actuators. The charts above will assist you in selecting your next system.
The Power Limit Controller. The RHC Power Limit Controller has become one of our most popular retrofit features for operating SCR systems. The unit is equipped with the standard KW and IT power limit circuits but allows for adjustment of both KW and IT. Each function can be changed independent of the other. The range of adjustment allows the power limit to be lowered to 80% and increased to 110%. The
controller has an under frequency power limit feature which keeps the rig operating when sudden engine problems or a load of bad fuel would normally cause a rig shutdown. This unit is a pin for pin replacement for the standard power limit board.
Typical Applications
Driller’s Consoles. RHC has developed a PLC-based Driller's Console as an option. The PLC-based control utilizes a small communication cable to communicate from the Driller's Console to the SCR Power Control House, thus eliminating cabling and installation material.
Custom requirements.
Above: Typical RHC Driller's Console.
RHC is committed to meeting customer requirements. When adding a third mud pump, independent rotary, power swivel, or generators, RHC will engineer and modify an existing system as required. We will refurbish an old system, electronics, bridges, assignment, or MCC changes, . . . whatever it takes.

1. The power end is designed for long life and ease of service. The power end features precision bearings mounted to a high-strength crankshaft, ductile-iron type connecting rods, and fully cylindrical crossheads (models up to 8-inch stroke). All are combined in a rugged, cast power frame for structural reliability and easy, accessible servicing. 2. Get a double-extension crankshaft on select models. This permits drive input from either side without reversing the crankshaft. You can also connect auxiliary drives for chemical, sump, charging, or lubricating pumps, in addition to the regular drive. 3. Replaceable intermediate rods simplify maintenance. Corrosion-resistant chrome-plated or stainless steel intermediate rods can be replaced without removing the crosshead.

6. Long-life plungers and packing. The stuffing boxes fit in a pilot bore in the ribreinforced main frame, ensuring proper alignment of the plungers and stuffing boxes. Packing and plunger life can be further extended with an easily installed drip or force-fed lubrication system. Packing options include: • Spring-loaded KEVLAR • Adjustable die-formed • Non-adjustable lip-type • Spring-loaded V-ring For high-pressure, high-temperature, and exotic fluids, special packing materials are available.
10. Valve service. Shouldered, tapered-seat stainless steel valves provide a positive and controlled fit.
7. Easy access to plungers and stuffing boxes.
For high-pressure service and other special requirements, valve choices include:
Ample space in the cradle chamber makes maintenance easier. Plungers can be removed or packing replaced without removing stuffing boxes.
• Cage-type with ball and seat (or disc and seat) • Spherical type • Bottom guided • Disc type
8. Gear reducers. For direct connecting high speed drives, integral gear reducers are available for most pumps. Other models incorporate an integral pinion shaft which provides great flexibility for changes in pumping conditions.
For greater corrosion and abrasion resistance, optional valve materials include: • Five choices of stainless steels • Delrin plastic • Carburized steel
