Meet the management team and your teachers Mr. Matt Christie (Academy Australasia Principal)
Matt is a successful speaker and educator with over 14 year’s experience in the corporate world. He has held national training roles in the allied health, retail, hospitality, hairdressing and teacher professional development sectors. He is passionate about assisting individuals to initiate positive change in their lives. Matt has also spent many years in the classroom teaching students from diverse cultural backgrounds. He has a strong passion for lifelong learning and lives and works by his very own personal philosophy: "You can do anything if you put your mind to it - Anything in the whole wide world" Mr. Michael Trinidad (Academy Australasia Vice Principal) Michael is an exceptional educator and guest speaker and is in high demand by the students. Originally from the Philippines, Michael migrated to Australia in 1995. He has years of experience teaching students from a variety of cultures in Australia and abroad. Michael has been employed as a Teacher and Head of Department for English Studies by some of the leading schools both in the Philippines and in Australia. He brings the passion of learning to Academy Australasia by creating an environment for students that are fun, interactive, and educational. Michael has post graduate studies in English as a second language. Michael started his career working at Operation Brotherhood Montessori Center, the pioneer of Montessori education in the Philippines, teaching Philippine History, World History and English.
What is the OET Preparation Course? This course is designed to improve the four macro skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in an accelerated fashion and will have you fully prepared to take The OET Examination. Who is the program for? 12 health and allied health professions: dentistry, dietetics, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiography, speech pathology and veterinary science. The OET test is currently used by the governing bodies of the professions at state and national level in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Each board or council determines the result required from candidates to meet the language competency standards required in order to function in their profession. OET Preparation Course content and student outcomes: OET reading, OET writing, OET listening and OET speaking Letter writing including but not limited to: formal and informal letters, patient referral letters, hospital admissions letters, reminder letter to patients, patient discharge letters etc. Speaking using tone, diction, fluency, accuracy and volume, which covers all role play card situations Pronunciation and appropriate language for when dealing with people in all contexts Functional language, taking patient histories, giving explanations, giving advice, aggression conversation and giving re-assurances Australian health care sector – understanding the role of different government departments and understanding public and private health enterprise Speed reading for all components of the OET exam Reading for specific purposes – understanding the text and being able to answers specific questions relating to the text Health professional’s grammar in writing and speaking for the OET exam Educators: The program is taught by experienced English Teachers from Australia with a solid knowledge of the OET Examination. Who recognises the OET exam? OET results are accepted as proof of English language skills by regulatory healthcare bodies and councils; immigration department; education institutions and healthcare employers. Below is a list of organisations which accept OET results. Please check with the organisation you are applying to regarding the OET grade(s) they will accept. Please note that this list is not exhaustive. Australia Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). OET is accepted by DIAC for various visa categories including skilled migration and student visas. Candidates can find more information about this by visiting www.immi.gov.au Boards and Councils Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) the National agency responsible for the registration and accreditation of 9 of the 12 health professions in Australia.

SPEAKING In the speaking test, you have a discussion with a certified examiner. It is interactive and as close to a real life situation as a test can get. The test is 11-14 minutes in length with 3 parts. Part 1 you answer questions about yourself and your family. Part 2 you speak about any topic. Part 3 you have a longer discussion on the topic.
SPEAKING The speaking is an individual interview that takes around 20 minutes. It is professional specific for your profession. In each interview, your identity and profession is checked by the interviewer and there is a short warm up conversation about your professional background. Then the role-plays are introduced, one by one, and you have 2 -3 minutes to prepare for each. The two role-plays take about 5 minutes each.
Total Time: 14 minutes READING Texts are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. A variety of questions is used, chosen from the following types: multiple choice, identifying information, identifying writer’s views/claims, matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow chart completion, diagram label completion, short answer questions. Total Time: 60 minutes WRITING It has two writing tasks of 150 and 250 words. In task 1 candidates are asked to describe some visual information (graph, table, chart or diagram), and to present a description in their own words. They need to write 150 words in 20 minutes. In task 2 candidates are presented a point of view or argument or problem. They need to write 250 words in about 40 minutes.
Total Time: 20 minutes READING Part A- Summary reading task on a Health/medical related topic. Skimming 3-4 short texts with 25-35 missing words to complete (15 minutes)
Total Time: 60 minutes Total words in 1 hour = 400 LISTENING The listening test is 30 minutes and is 4 recorded monologues and conversations. Questions include: Multiple choice, short answer, sentence completion, form/ note/summary/flow chart/ table completion, labeling a diagram/ plan/ map and matching.
Total Time: 45 minutes Total words in 40 mins= 180-230 LISTENING Part A is a recorded consultation between a medical practitioner and a patient (dialogue). You are required to listen to the recording in sections and take notes under the heading given to you. Part B is a talk or lecture on a medical field or issue (monologue). There is a variety of questions types, e.g. note taking and sentence, table completion, true and false questions and multiple choice questions.

Part B- Read two passages on general medical topics with a total of 16-20 multiple choice questions (45 minutes)
Total Time: 60 minutes WRITING It has one writing task and is profession specific. You take this part of the OET using materials specifically for your profession. Students are required to write a medical letter.
