Notes on the Art and Science of Vedic Astrology Chapter 1: Veda means Higher Knowledge. When we understand the fullness of our Real Self then we know the VEDAS.  Vedic Astrology, Ayurveda and Yoga are the 3 main branches of Self Realization. Yoga trains the mind, Ayurveda trains the physical body and Astrology provides the map.  Once we take responsibility for our state of consciousness, we can surpass the influence of planets in the birth chart.  The two most important remedies for a birth chart are behavior modification and Yogic meditation.  Yamas and Niyamas are the first two means of obtaining behavioral modification in Yoga.  The Yama includes: nonviolence, truth, non stealing, and conservation of vital energy. These are the external practices. The

Niyamas as personal mantras, alignment of intention, etc.  You are only influenced by karma to the degree that you identify with it.  Daily meditation as well as meditation prior to a reading is highly recommended.  From the top of the head to the base of the spine is the pathway called SUSHUMNA. It is here that the chakras line up.  To directly influence the SUSHUMNA, there are 2 types of meditations which are very effective: #1:

 In Vedic astrology, the ascendant constitutes the first house and the WHOLE SIGN EQUALS the whole house.  Vedic astrologers can use up to 15 different rashi (main) charts to interpret a horoscope.

 The most used Divisional chart is the NAVAMSA which corresponds to the 9th Harmonic chart in Western Astrology.  Esoteric astrologers regard the Navamsa as the horoscope of the soul while the main rashi is considered the fruits or results of it.  Traditional Vedic astrology never included the more recently discovered outter planets: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. More importance is attached the north (rahu) node of the moon and the south node (ketu) .  The use of PLANETARY YOGAS is unique to VEDIC ASTROLOGY. A yoga is a union of certain planetary factors

 CARDINAL SIGNS are innovative, changing and intense since they signal the start of a new season.  FIXED SIGNS are stable and unchanging.  MUTABLE SIGNS are adaptable and open to flexibility.  The SIGN in which a planet is located represents the qualities through which the planet must operate.

 There is another way of dividing the zodiac in Vedic Astrology; They are 27 sections called LUNAR MANSIONS or NAKSHATRAS. The first one has the same starting point as ARIES.

 The diagram used for a horoscope in India is called KUNDALI or CHAKRA.  PLANETS are seen as benefic and malefic in Vedic astrology. VENUS and JUPITER are benefic planets  The Moon is considered its most benefic at the FULL MOON and at its weakest when conjoined with the Sun at NEW MOON.

 Mercury is variable when it comes to polarity and picks up the traits of planets it is housed with.  Mars and Saturn are the main malefics. RAHU and KETU are considered to be MELIFICS.  Sun, Mars and Jupiter are masculine, Saturn and Mercury are neutral and Moon and Venus are feminine.  Neither of the Nodes are happy in Cancer or Leo since they are owned by Moon and Sun respectively. 

 The MoolTRIKONA houses are 1, 4, 7, and 10.
