Description
Excerpts from “Hindu Panchangam” by Neti Sivramakrishna Sastry and Karra Bhaskara Sarma. The sky around the earth is divided into 27 star clusters domiciled in twelve Rasis. Hindu astrological system is based on Sidereal Zodiac, alternately called 'simsumara chakram', 'bhachakram' or 'kalapurusha chakram' in sanskrit. Astrologically, Sun is treated as one of the seven planets despite being a star. These planets travel clockwise whilst Rahu and Kethu, the shadowy planets move counter clockwise. Ancient sages have established the relationship between planetary movements in the sky and the way they have influenced the destiny of life on earth, besides predicting auspicious and inauspicious times that are used to perform various activities in daily life. The calendar that contains all these times is called 'panchangam' which literally refers to the five limbs in 'thidhi' (lunar day), 'vaaram' (day of the week), 'nakshatram' (star), 'yogam' and 'karanam'. 'Yogam' and 'karanam' are not widely used these days; hence they have been dropped in our calendar. The two important methods in practice for calculating 'panchangam' are 'surya siddhantham' and 'druk siddhantham'. The former is very ancient whilst the latter, based on modern astronomy is more widely used these days. Despite surya siddhantham in the older days gave more accurate planetary positions, subsequent users did not know how to adjust for natural changes through the millennium resulting in calculated planetary positions deviating from the actual planetary positions in the sky. More people are therefore using the modern astronomical method of 'druk Ganitham' or 'druk siddhantham' that allows validation of the calculated planetary positions using modern telescopes. Because of this fact, we have used 'druk ganitham' to calculate this calendar adopting the 'chitra praksha ayanamsam', that is approved by the Calendar Reform Committee, Government of India and several Astrological Bodies around the World. The drift between vernal equinox and the diurnal equinox measured at the epoch is called ‘ayanamsa’. This advances by 50.26 seconds in 12 months that is traditionally computed for the beginning of the year and is applied for the rest of the year because of the complexity involved in the manual calculations. We have calculated the 'ayanamsa' for each day in question using modern computers and the rules of 'Druk Ganitham', thereby giving the unquestionable numerical accuracy. 'Ayanamsa' for the beginning of calendar year 2005 stands at 240 04' 12". (Note added by me: Unfortunately different astrologers use different ayanamsa values to calculate the nirayana longitudes resulting in different panchangams and interpretations!) The geo-centric positions are calculated by solving 'kepler's' equation of planetary motion and the 'sayana' or tropical positions so obtained. 'ayanamsa' is applied to get the 'nirayana' or sidereal positions of the planets. Thidhi, 'nakshatram', 'varjyam' and 'adhika maasam' are derived using the rules stipulated in 'siddhantha ganakanandam'.
How to assess the correct TITHI and its starting and ending times. Tithi is the longitudinal distance of Chandra from the Ravi in the celestial zodiac in multiples of 12 degrees. As there are 360 degrees total, number of Tithis is 360/12 = 30 Tithis. Mathematically it can be represented as Tithi = (Longitude of Chandra – Longitude of the Ravi)/12 If the value is less than zero (negative) then add 3600 to the result. As the celestial zodiac is 3600, for every 120, tithi changes. Starting from the zodiac point where both Chandra and Ravi are together, the first 12 degrees is padyami, second 12 degrees vidiya and so on. The duration of 168 to 180 degrees is Poornima. 180 to 192 degrees is Krishna padyami, 348 to 360 degrees is Amavasya. Roughly Chandra covers 12 degrees of zodiac in a day. But among all the planets, Chandra’s motion is very erratic and not uniform. To cover 12 degrees (one Tithi) Chandra takes any where between 21 hours to 27 hours. But it is possible to calculate very accurately the longitudes of Chandra and Ravi. So the distance between them can also be obtained quite accurately. Even if different ayanamsas are used, the relative distance between two planets should not change. So Tithi starting and ending times also should not change. But unfortunately different panchangams dole out different timings for starting and ending times of tithes, which is just not possible unless the longitudes of Chandra and Ravi are calculated wrongly. If Drik Siddhantha based on trigonometric calculations is followed there will not be any scope for error. But more often than this is not the case. Even sunrise and sunset times are also shown differently by different astrologers!! Now a note on Nakshatra Chandra’s absolute longitude in the zodiac gives the Nakshatra of the day. Unlike Tithi which is a measure of longitudinal distance of Chandra from Ravi, Chandra’s longitudinal distance from Aeries zero degrees is measured. There are 27 Nakshatras and as zodiac is 360 degrees, each Nakshatra measures 360/27 = 13 degrees 20 minutes. Duration of Nakshatra may vary between 21 hours and 27 hours. Even though absolute longitude of Chandra can be calculated accurately, because of different ayanamsas used, hindu panchangams may differ showing the starting and ending timings of Nakshatra.
In Hindu panchangams, it is a normal practice to give ending timings of Tithis and Nakshatras. If you take any date and look up in Panchangam, you may see Uttarabhadra : 3 : 14 NIGHT. It means Uttarabhadra Nakshatra ends at 3 : 14 NIGHT. It also means that the next Nakshatra namely revathi starts at that time. Next day in panchangam it would indicate the ending time of Revathi as Revathi : 2 : 14 NIGHT. Now a short note on Varjyam Unlike Rahukalam, Gulika, Yamakantakam, and Durmuhurtham which depend on the duration of day and sunrise time, Varjyam and Amrita Gadias depend on the Nakshatra of the day and its duration. The method of calculation of Varjyam is given in 'siddhantha ganakanandam' For a given Nakshatra, the starting time of Varjyam from the time Nakshatra starts is arrived at using the formula: x (durationof Nakshatra) where x is a number that depends 60 on the Nakshatra of the day. It should be understood that starting time of Varjyam is calculated from that Nakshatra’s starting time.
Starting time of Varjyam =
For example, the value of ‘x’ for Aswini Nakshatra is 50. Let us suppose that Aswini Nakshatra starts on a day at 6:30 AM and ends at 8:00 AM next day. The duration of time Aswini lasts is 25:30 hrs. Then the time when Varjyam starts of that day is given by
50 (25.5) = 6.5 + 21.25 = 27.75 hrs. That is 27:45 hrs. As the 60 Nakshatra started at 6:30 AM, 27.75 hrs is 3.75 hrs past midnight. That is varjyam starts at early hours (3:45 AM) next day. Varjyam starts at 6.5 +
The duration of Varjyam depends on the duration of Nakshatra. Divide duration of Nakshatra by 15. The result is duration of Varjyam. For a 24 hr Nakshatra, Varjyam lasts for 1hr:36 min. It should be understood that a Nakshatra can be for as minimum of 21 hrs to a maximum of 27 hrs. Accordingly the duration of Varjyam changes from 1 hr: 24 min to 1hr: 48 min. Now let us take one more example, Revathi is Nakshatra of the day and it started at 3:14 AM (3.23333hrs). We will calculate the starting time and duration of Varjyam for 4 cases. Case 1: Revathi lasts exactly for 24 hrs. That is it ends at 3:14 AM next day.The factor x for Revathi is 30. So Varjyam is calculated as under: Varjyam starts at 3.23333 +
30 (24) = 3.23333 + 12 = 15.23333 hrs = 15 hrs: 14 min 60
Case 2: Revathi lasts for 21 hrs only. That is it ends at 0:14 AM next day.The factor x for Revathi is 30. So Varjyam is calculated as under: Varjyam starts at 3.23333 +
30 (21) = 3.23333 + 10.5 = 13.73333 hrs = 13 hrs: 44 min 60
Case 3: Revathi lasts for 27 hrs only. That is it ends at 6:14 AM next day.The factor x for Revathi is 30. So Varjyam is calculated as under: Varjyam starts at 3.23333 +
30 (27) = 3.23333 + 13.5 = 16.73333 hrs = 16 hrs: 44 min 60
Case 4: Revathi, on a particular day started at 3:14 AM and ended at 2:15 AM next day. That its duration is 23 hrs 1 min. The factor x for Revathi is 30. So Varjyam is calculated as under: Varjyam starts at 3.23333 +
30 (23.01666) = 3.23333 + 11.50833 = 14.741663 hrs = 14 60
hrs: 45 min For the above example, I have used Pidaparthi vari panchangam. The pandits have used an ayanamsa value of 23 deg: 58 min: 30 sec. It is the same as the Government of India’s recommended chitra paksha ayanamsa. (Unfortunately many pandits do not indicate the ayanamsa they have used.) If any other value for ayanamsa is used Nakshatra starting and ending timings change and so is Varjyam. But the duaration of Nakshatra should not change. In order to save on complexity of calculations some tend take 24 hrs as the duration of Nakshatra and calculate Varjyam, which may or may not be correct. It is like doling out Rahukalam, Gulika, Durmuhurtham and Yamakantakam timings based on sunrise time of 6:00 hrs and sunset time of 18:00 hrs every day, which is obviously not correct. But we live with that.
Literature on Kuja Dosham Kuja Dosham is also called Manglik , Manglik Dosham , Mangal Dosham , Bhauma Dosham etc. Kuja Dosham is formed when Mars sits in specific houses in the Rashi chart. So he influences some particular houses by his placement and aspects. There are specific rules to check for Kuja Dosham while there are other factors which break or weaken this. Kuja Dosham is said to kill the spouse, but actually it does not happen this way always. Depending on the strength of the Dosham, it creates different scale or kinds of problems accordingly. It is generally said that in a chart [Irrespective to male or female native] When Mars is found in any of the houses 1, 4, 7, 8, 12 - Kuja Dosham forms. Some South Indian astrologers also take the 2nd house in addition - while most do not agree to this. [Mars in second can indicate bold or bitter speech, or using slang words etc.] Mars is a planet of battle, war and fight. He is Tamasic in nature and belongs to the caste of warriors [Kshatriya]. He in general is fond of fights, battles and is given to anger. That is why, very naturally, when he takes over the marital matters, he likes to put quarrel, fight and 'battle' in marriage, which disturb marital happiness. Mars is also he planet of over sex drive, too much boldness, and too fierce in nature - all of them are against a peaceful marriage. The actual reason behind why these houses produce Kuja Dosham should be understood logically. That is why I am giving house by house explanation Mars in the 1st house - Mars is a planet of boldness, and kind of dictator in nature. That is why Mars in ascendant can make a person too bold, aggressive, or too dominating. He might want to be the all in all in his family, while not paying a good attention to what others [Or his spouse] are saying. He will be easily involved in fights and will express himself rather directly. He might be also of short temper. This causes the major problem. Mars will also aspect the houses 4 (Happiness, family life), 7 (Spouse, married life) and 8 (Marital tie) and thus create problem in all these areas with ease. He will quickly create fights on unimportant issues. Mars in the 4th house - The planet of battle is in the house of family life, so battle in family! Mars deprives the native from domestic harmony, there are misunderstandings among the family members. Mars will cast his 4th aspect on the 7th house of spouse and marital life. In 4th house Mars loses his strength for direction and creates more and more trouble in family life.
Mars in the 7th house - There will be clash and unhappiness in married life and this is perhaps the worst of all Kuja Doshams - a direct hit. Mars is a planet of abuse and violation and Mars being in 7th house very possibly can give violation in married life. In a female chart it might give physical or excessive mental torture from the husband. There will be also fight for the dominating power, and there might be lack of harmony in the sexual issues. The sexual and emotional needs of the partners might not match or might have a great difference. Mars might give over sexual desire / sickly sexual desire to the native or to his spouse and create mess in marital life for this issue. It might give a short tempered spouse. Mars in the 8th house - The 8th house rules marital tie, from the 8th house we see the possibility of death of the spouse. Mars is the planet of accident, operation, assault from weapons and bleeding etc. - all of the things are ruled by 8th house. So being in the 8th house, Mars will be very eager to develop these tendencies. He might cause death of spouse, possibly through accident, operation or any other mishaps. Thus it can indicate an early death of the spouse. 8th house is also a house of hidden issues / immoral acts and Mars here can make the native / spouse be involved in hidden and sinful acts. When they come forward, storm blows in married life. Mars in the 12th house - 12th house rules all kinds of losses and also the bed pleasure, i.e. sexual enjoyment. Mars here can give a native sickly desires, or illegal unions with other people. Again, Mars will aspect the 7th house with it's 8th aspect.
Counters to Kuja Dosham There is no need to be really terrified if Mars is found in the houses 1/4/7/8/12. There are many facts that can counter or even nullify the Dosham. The most popular way to nullify this Dosham is to find a partner or spouse who has the same Dosham. It is believed that if both the partners have this Dosham, then the Dosham is nullified. Experience shows that this might be true.
However, there are certain facts in the chart itself that nullify the Dosham. # Lordship is a very important fact here to consider. For the natives with Cancer and Leo ascendants, Mars is very benefic being a Yoga Karaka. For natives with Aries and Scorpio ascendants, being the ascendant lord he will do good, on the other hand for ruling a Dusthana, he will not be purely benefic. For a Pisces ascendant native, he becomes the 9th lord as well as a mild killer (Maraka). However, Mars will undoubtedly produce strong Kuja Doshams to the ascendants he is a malefic for. (Virgo for an example.)
(Note added by me: Above exceptions are applicable for the LAGNAS indicated) # According to Dr. B. V. Raman, Kuja Dosham nullifies in the following conditions -
a. b. c. d. e. f.
If Mars is in 2nd house in any of the signs of Mercury, i.e., Gemini or Virgo. If Mars is in 4th house in own sign, i.e., Aries or Scorpio. If Mars is in 7th house in exaltation or debilitation, i.e., Capricorn or Cancer. If Mars is in 8th house in any of the signs of Jupiter, i.e., Sagittarius or Pisces. If Mars is in 12th house in any of the signs of Venus, i.e., Taurus or Libra. If Mars is in any house in Aquarius or Leo.
(Note added by me: For example, if Kuja is in Mithuna or Kanya rasi and that rasi happens to be 2nd rasi from Chandra or Sukra, Kuja Dosham gets nullified. Like wise, 4th house Kuja Dosham gets nullified if Kuja is posited in Mesha or Vrischika rasi etc. If Kuja is posited in Kumbha or Simha rasi, there won’t be any Kuja dosham at all!) However, some hold the opinion that these conditions though weaken the Dosham, but does not completely nullify. I feel that it might be correct. KUJA DOSHAM (B.V.RAMAN) The position of Venus and Mars is very important in judging marital relations. Mars whose element is fire rules marriage. Where he is badly situated or associated in the horoscope of a male or female, it follows that the sacerdotal fire gets extinguished soon. Such unfavourable situation goes under the name of Kuja Dosham. It must be noted that in determining marriage adaptability between two parties, there are several elements of much more importance than Kuja Dosham. And the evil influences accuring from the bad position of Mars is only one of the several elements. It is unfortunate that throughout South India especially in the Tamil areas, much is made of the so-called Kuja Dosham and this bugbear has been the means of destroying the happiness of many families by preventing marriages otherwise very eligible and anxiously wished for. So far as our humble experience goes it is only in the Kerala Sastra that mention is made of Kuja Dosham. The stanza runs thus: Dhana vyayecha pathale jamitre chashtame kuja; Strinam bharthru vinasamcha bharthunam strivinasanam. This means: - "If Mars is in the 2nd, 12th, 4th, 7th and 8th houses in the horoscope of the female, the death of the husband will occur; similar situation in the husband's horoscope causes the death of wife."
The Lagna represents body, the Moon, mind and Venus, sexual relations. Therefore, the houses have to be reckoned with reference to all the three, viz., Lagna, Moon and Venus. The dosham (evil) is considered weak when it exists from Lagna, a little stronger from the Moon and still more powerful from Venus. The second house signifies family; the twelth represents comforts and pleasures of bed. The fourth rules sukha or happiness. The seventh indicates husband and eighth represents longevity of the wife or husband. Hence the position of Mars in these houses is supposed to
produce this peculiar dosham or evil. If Kuja Dosham obtains in the horoscopes of both the bride and bridegroom, the dosham gets cancelled. There are, of course, many good combinations which assure marital felicity and much importance need not be given to Kuja Dosham. Granting that Kuja Dosham is a factor whose occurrence should not be ignored, there are antidotes which are not generally known to the rank and file of Hindu astrologers. The exceptions are: Mars in the 2nd can be said to be bad provided such 2nd house is any other than Gemini and Virgo; in the 12th the dosham is produced when such 12th house is any other than Taurus and Libra in the 4th house Mars causes dosham provided the house falls in any sign other than Aries and Scorpio; when the 7th is other than Capricorn and Cancer, the dosham is given rise to; and Mars gives bad effects in the 8th, provided the 8th is any other than Sagittarius and Pisces. In Aquarius and Leo, Mars produces no dosham whatsoever. The dosham is counteracted by the conjunction of Mars and Jupiter or Mars and the Moon; or by the presence of Jupiter or Venus in the ascendant. Thus, it will be seen that Kuja Dosham does not deserve that consideration which is now being paid to it. In the consideration of marriage adaptability there are various other factors which should be carefully examined. We have dealt above fairly exhaustively with the question of marriage adaptability and have tried to avoid controversial issues as the book is intended for the common man who wishes to take advantage of the astrological rules to his benefit.

Excerpts from the article on Kuja Dosham KUJA DOSHAM MANAGALIKA DOSHAM; ANGARAKA DOSHAM. Dr. VENKATA RAMANA RAO, KOMARAGIRI., Ph.D., F.A.S., F.I.E., F.Innst.P. Dedicated with Devotion to Lord Sri Gouri Sankara. The nature of Mars (Kuja) is fire. He is deemed to be malefic. He is the lord of two houses in the Zodiac, namely Mesham (Aries) and Vruschikam (Scorpio); Makaram (Capricorn) is house of Exultation (Utach) and Karkatakam (Cancer) is the house of debilitation for Mars. Budha (Mercury) is enemy to Kuja (Mars). Ravi (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Guru (Jupiter) are friends to Mars (Kuja; Mangala); Sani (Saturn) and Sukra (Venus) are neutrals (neither friend nor enemy) to Mars. But Mars is enemy to Saturn. Mars is neutral to Raahu and Kethu. Venus and Mars are mutually neutrals. Sun and Mars are mutually friends. Mars is neutral to Moon. Mars and Jupiter are mutual friends. Mars has retrograde (vakra-gathi) motion and also standstill (sthambhana) state. Due to this stand-still characteristic Mars (Kuja) can stay in a house (rasi) for more period than is usually destined). It is stated in Astrological texts, that the horoscope (birth chart) of a person has Kuja-dosham (defective disposition of Mars) if Mars is present in one of the following houses 1,2,4,7,8,12 counted from the house of birth (ascendant) and the house of Moon (rasi) and the house of Venus (Sukra). It is described as follows: LAGNAM (BIRTH HOUSE) is denoted as body; MOON is denoted as mind; SUKRA is deemed as giver of spouse & marriage causing planet. It is described in ancient Sanskrit text MUHOORTHA-CHINTHAMANI* : slokam : LAGNAE VYAYAECHA, PAATHALAE, JAMITHRAECHA, ASHTAMAE KUJAE STHREENAAM HARTHRU VINASAAYA: PUMSAA BHARYA VINASANAM; The famous ancient SaintAstrologer Sri Agashtya Maharshi wrote in his text on Astrology, *AGASTYA SAMHITHA; “DHANAE , VYAYEACHA, PAATHALAE, JAMITHRECHA, ASHTAMAE KUJA STHITHU, KUJA-DOSHAMUCHYATHAE”; The ill-effect of Mars is strongest (100%) when Mars is positioned in 1,2,4,7,8,12 houses from the house of Venus (Sukra); the ill-effect of Mars is very strong (about 75%) when Mars is positioned in 1,2,4,7,8,12 houses from the house of Moon: the ill-effect of Mars is moderately strong (about 66%)when Mars is positioned in 1,2,4,7,8,12 houses from the house of birth (Janma-lagnam= ascendant). But 75% of the general astrologer are quacks and do not
possess the depth of knowledge and experience in Astrology; so they explain the Kuja dosham taking the moon-position or lagnam as the starting point to count; this is not at all correct in our opinion. We must take the position of Venus (Sukra) as the reference house, because Sukra is the ruling planet for conjugal life and marriage. It is desirable to perform marriage of the girl G (with Kuja-dosham) with the boy B with Kujadosham. Kuja-dosham must be present in both the horoscopes of B & G; or must be absent in both. Great sages of ancient times had profound knowledge of Hindu astrology: Atri, Narada and such Maharishis suggested some remedies and exemptions for this Kuja-dosham. Here we summarise some of those exemptions: There is no Kuja-dosham in any of the following cases and Mars does not harm. The great Saint-Astrologers of ancient times mentioned in a slokam : ARKA, INDU KSHETHRA JATHANAM KUJA-DOSHO NA VIDYATHAE; SVA, UTCHA, MITHRA BHAJATHAANAM PEEDKO NA BHATH KUJA : 1) If Mars is in his own house; Mesham (Aries) and Vruschikam (Scorpio) are own houses for Mars 2) If Mars stays in one of his friends’ houses, Kuja dosahm is not applicable; Karkatakam (Cancer) is own house of Moon (Chandra); Simham (Leo) is own house of Ravi (Sun); Dhanasu (Sagittarius) and Meenam (Pisces) are own houses of Guru (Jupiter). 3) If Mars is in the own house of Sani; namely Makaram (Capricorn) and Kumbham (Aquarius). 4) Mesham (Aries), Karkatakam (Cancer), Thula (Libra), and Makaram (Capricorn) are movable signs (chara-raasis); if Mars stays in one of these houses and that chara-raasi (house) is 1, 2,4, 7, 8, 12th house from the house of birth (Lagnam) or the house of moon (raasi) or the house where Sukra (Venus) stays, there is no Kuja-dosham; Mars does not harm. 5) If Moon and Kuja are together in the same house, there is no Kuja dosham. 6) If Sani (Saturn) & Kuja (Mars), or if Kuja & Raahu or if Kuja & Kethu pair in same house. 7) If Mars & Guru (Jupiter) or Mars & Budha (Mercury) are together in the same house. Or if Guru or Budha are aspecting (seeing) Mars.
8) If a person is born in Karkatakam (Cancer), or Simham (Leo), or Makaram (Capricorn) lagna 9) If Mars is in 2nd house from the houses of Guru (Jupiter), Budha (Mercury) or Sani (Saturn). 10) If Sani (Saturn) is aspecting (seeing) Mars (Kuja). 11) If lagnam (birth house) or Moon (Chandra) or Sukra (Venus) is in the houses of Venus (Sukra), Vrushabham (Taurus) or Thula (Libra), and if Mars is in 4th or 7th house from the above. 12) If Mars is in 2nd or 12th house from lagnam (ASC) or Chandra (Moon) or Sukra (Venus) and those houses are own houses of Budha (Mercury), Mithunam (Gemini) or Kanya (Virgo). 13) If Mars (Kuja) is in 4th or 7th or 12th house from Lagnam (ASC) or Chandra (Moon) or Sukra (Venus) and those houses are own houses of Sukra (Venus), Vrushabham (Taurus) or Thula (Libra). 14) If Mars is in 8th house from lagnam, or Moon or Venus and that 8th house is the own house of Guru (Jupiter), Dhanasu (Sagittarius) or Meenam (Pisces). 15) The 7th house from lagnam (birth house=ASC=ascendant) is the house of spouse (kalathra); if Mars (Kuja) is in 7th house, the spouse may die in periods of Kuja (Mars). If that 7th house is Mesham (Aries) or Karkatakam (Cancer) or Vruschikam (Scorpio) or Makaram (Capricorn), no Kuja-dosham 16) Well-known astrologers of present times, Relangi, Tangirala, Pidaparthi Poornaih wrote in their Panchangams (Ephemeris) and books, that Kuja-dosham is not applicable if there is Kuja dosham from lagnam and from Moon house and Venus house – all three houses in same horoscope.
As per the Ancient Indian Astrology Kuja Dosham is considered an important aspect in marriage match making and compatibility. The very word scares and sends shivers along the spine of the alliance seekers. The moment they hear that Kuja Dosham exists in one chart, they drop it and say you find a match with similar Dosham. Chevvai or Kuja Dosham means the placement of Mangal- Kuja (Mars) in houses 1, 2,4,7,8,12 from Lagna as well from Moon sign is bad and will cause death or separation of spouse and hence should be avoided for marriage alliance unless both the parties have the same extent of Chevvai / Kuja Dosham Mangalik.
I emphasis here, for the readers to understand that manglik is not any untoward. Nor should one have any fear of it. It is nothing but a classification of Blood group that can be judged by the placement of Mars in their natal chart. In simples terms, Negative goes with Negative and Positive with Positive. Whether it is electricity or human body, the rule is same. So when next time you search for an alliance, if you find the match is perfect in every respect excepting the placement of Mars, then better you go for matching the blood group rather than fully depending on the unpredictable astrology!! However traditional Indian system of Hindu Astrology has given certain exemptions even if the Mars - Kuja placed in these houses with the following simple conditions.
1. If Lagna or Moon sign is Capricorn (Makaram - where Mars is exalted) OR in Cancer (where Mars is debilitated) or Leo (Simmam as the Sun, Lord of Leo's Exalting House is Aries) Aries (Mesham) or Scorpio (Viruchikam) as the last two being Mar's own house. The Kuja/Mangal dosham will not affect or apply nor will do any harm to them. 2. If Mars is in 12th house and the 12th house is Taurus or Libra then also the native will not have the applicability of Kuja Dosham. This exception is given because both Taurus and Libra are the direct 7th houses from Mar's own house. 3. Like wise Mars in 4th house and if the 4th house falls in Aries and Scorpio then Kuja Dosham does not apply. 4. If the 7th house is in Capricorn or Cancer and the Mars placed in any of them, then also Kuja Dosham does not apply. 5. If Mars is positioned in the 8th house and the 8th house falls in Sagittarius or Pisces then Kuja Dosham does not apply. 6. If Mars is in conjunction with Jupiter (Guru) or Sun (Suryan) or Sani, then the Mangalic effect is nullified. 7. A general opinion is that if Mars is in 2nd or 12th in the male horoscope or Mars in the 4th & 7th houses in female horoscope or Mars in 8th in either of the horoscope, there is no escape from Kuja Dosham. This single placement is considered too harsh to have Mangalik or Chevvai or Kuja Dosham. 8. If Jupiter's 5th, 7th or 9th house aspect is visible, then the native need not worry at all. If Mars is in conjunction with Jupiter and Moon, then it is considered more lucky as Guru Mangala Yogam and Gaja Kesari Yogam is combined together to weed off the ill effects! 9. Quite apart from the above, if Mangal or Mars is in 8th house in conjunction with Venus known as Sukra, then it is really more harmful. It is a must to find a suitable
alliance only with the same combination of horoscope. Venus in the 7th house aspect of Mars from 7th or 8th house Drishti is still worse. It this happen to be the exalted house of Mars, i.e. Makara, then surely a same combination of alliance should be sought. It is just because, the physical and sexual demands will be more, or to say critically high, so the partner should match this criteria. If a person is born on a Tuesday, then not to worry as for them, they are surely not a Mangalik, since the day lord Mars Rules for the day, the Manglik effect is nullified to a maximum extent. If Mars is in conjunction or aspect by Jupiter, Sun or Saturn, then too the ill effects are nullified. According to Deva Kolam, even exchange of house with Mars by any other planet causes this Dosham nullified. Now let us take two examples

In Ramakumar’s kundali, Kuja is in Vrischikam (his own house), It is also a Vrischika lagna horoscope. Kuja is in Lagna in Vrischikam. He is 2nd to Chandra who is in Tula and he is in 4th house from Sukra who is in Simham. According to conventional theories, this kundali suffers from KUJA DOSHAM with respect all the three planets namely Lagnam, Chandra and Sukra. But as KUJA is in his own house namely Vrischikam in Lagnam, all the Kuja doshams are nullified. (1. The Kuja/Mangal dosham will not affect or apply nor will do any harm to them.)
In Shobha Rani’s kundali, Kuja is in Dhanus. He is in 7th house from Lagnam, in 8th house from Sukra and is in 12th house from Chandra. Here again, according to conventional theories, this kundali suffers from KUJA DOSHAM with respect all the three planets namely Lagnam, Chandra and Sukra. But as Chandra is in Makaram, which is the exalted sign for Kuja, all the Kuja doshams are nullified. Unfortunately only selectively Kuja dosham is assessed by many pandits and analysis is doled out based on that which leads to many a heart-burn.
