[edit] History Through the hard work and leadership of Socorro Cancio-Ramos and the late Jose Ramos with their family, the company has evolved from a small stall into the most popular bookstore chain in the Philippines. Before the Japanese occupation, the first National Book Store started as a stall shop in Escolta. It sold supplies, GI novels, and textbooks. When World War II broke out, strict book censorship forced them to shift their trade to soap, candies, and slippers. They bought their merchandise from wholesalers and peddled them to smaller retailers. After the war, the whole Escolta area was burned to the ground. With all their stocks reduced to ashes, the couple was forced to rebuild. They were able to rebuild a barong-barong, in the corner of Soler and Avenida Rizal, in time to catch the post-war business boom. They went back to business by selling textbooks, notebooks, pad paper, and pencils. Business went very well since there were only a few stores that sold school supplies and books at that time. National Book Store's opening was strategically timed to welcome the first postwar school year. In 1948, Typhoon Gene destroyed the store and soaked all the merchandise. Socorro CancioRamos and Jose Ramos, with their family, decided to rebuild again, and slept for only three hours a day, spending the rest of their hours at work. They eventually constructed a two-story building with a mezzanine, which was to become their retail store for many years. In the 1950s, Mrs. Ramos, the wife of Socorro Cancio-Ramos, thought of producing a line of greeting cards and postcards using Philippine views and artwork. It was a brilliant move for her to earn more. By creating a distinct design, it would promote Filipino customs and traditions to the rest of the world. Later on, they acquired the Philippine franchise for Hallmark cards. It was also at this time that the they began a publishing program through the assistance of

international publishers such as McGraw-Hill, Prentice Hall, Lippincott, Addison-Wesley, and others. In 1955 and after five years of negotiations, the Ramoses were able to acquire a piece of prime property owned by the Guerreros. It was only in 1963, however, that the construction of the Albecer Building began. This building was named after the first three Cancio-Ramos children— Alfredo, Benjamin, and Cecilia. (AL-fredo, BE-njamin, and CE-cilia) Little did they know that this nine-story building was the first of many that they would build. When their children grew, they persuaded their parents to expand beyond Avenida Rizal. Although they were reluctant at first, the Ramos couple realized the opportunity envisioned by their children. They opened a new branch on Recto Avenue, a place catering to students. In the 1970s, they were able to acquire space in new shopping centers opening up in Cubao and Makati. This started the National Book Store chain's steady growth. By the 1990s there were over 50 branches across the country. National book store now consists of 128 branches, including NBS Express mini stores. [edit] New Logo 1996 brought significant change to National Book Store. The family decided to change the company logo and commissioned a Singapore design company to execute the new company identity. A more modern script was used, and what was once a striped background became a solid and bolder color red. This has brought a change in the store layout as well. Color-coded signs and logical merchandise displays provide a customer-friendly atmosphere in the branches. [edit] An Institution Over sixty five years of focused energy has brought National Book Store to where it is now: the pinnacle of the bookstore industry in the Philippines. The National Book Store family takes pride in its role as an institution that supports education and enhances lives by providing educational, professional, and social communication products. The values that took Mr. and Mrs. Socorro Ramos through adversity -- hard work, shrewd business skills and a strong sense of social responsibility -- remain the driving force for the whole Ramos family, their 2,500 employees in over 120 branches. They firmly believe that these values will keep National Book Store ahead in the future. [edit] Rebuilding In 1963, the Ramos family built a nine-story building that served/s as their base of operations. References

Top 10 Bookstores in the Philippines Pinoys love to read, evidenced by the fact that bookstores are always full in a way that clothing stores rarely become. Be it to look for magazines, textbooks, pocketbooks or classics, here are the top 10 bookstores that we flocked to this 2009:

National Book Store

If there’s one bookstore that Pinoys go to, it must be NBS. It started out in 1948 as a school supply and textbook store, but now it’s a giant corporation, having 92 branches all over the Philippines. National Book Store is now a veritable household name. Its main branch is the recently-renovated four-story building in Cubao (take time to visit the topmost floor for a wide selection of previously-owned books). If it’s school supplies you’re looking for, National is that one place to go. “Laking National”? Looks like most of us are.

Fully Booked

Though National Book Store used to dominate the book store industry in the Philippines, Fully Booked is giving it a run for its money. Fully Booked somehow offers a more luxurious, comfortable ambience than the stark, sterile atmosphere ubiquitous in NBS, plus Fully Booked boasts a wider variety of book titles that Pinoy bibliophiles appreciate.

Powerbooks

As with Fully Booked, Powerbooks also offers a relaxing atmosphere that somehow encourages you to stay and browse through their amazing collection of books. Powerbooks is probably the first bookstore in the Philippines to actually encourage shoppers to read their wares, as they began to provide comfortable couches for everybody. This gamble apparently paid off, and now Powerbooks is one of the giant three of bookstores in the Philippines.

Goodwill Bookstore

Goodwill is an alternative option for the three popular bookstores mentioned above. It’s 100 percent Pinoy and has more than 5,000 stores all over our country. Its main strength lies in its wide selection of textbooks that are usually rarely found elsewhere.

Booksale

If you’re the type of person who loves the thrill of the hunt (for books), Booksale is definitely for you. Booksale stores are usually very small and cozy, with the hardbound books loosely organized by category, and the rest (magazines and pocketbooks) open for browsing in gigantic bins and racks. Spend hours looking at previously-owned classics and outdated magazines at a sizeable discount. Do know that Booksale is best browsed through if you’re not looking for a specific title but more for a particular type or book category.

Books For Less

Another alternative if you’re looking for something different. This is another Pinoyowned bookstore, and as the name implies, expect to pay less for your loved titles. Browse through their previously-owned book collection and you might chance upon a rare title you’ve been looking for.

Merriam & Webster Bookstore

This is yet another alternative option. Some Merriam & Webster branches may not house that many book titles, but you could adequately rely on this bookstore for your basic school supply needs.

Rex Bookstore

Rex Bookstore is one of the oldest bookstores in the Philippines, having been established in the 1950’s. Currently, its main specialty are textbooks and teaching materials, such as classroom charts and posters, as well as interactive CD-ROMs.

Centralbooks

Centralbooks is not that familiar to Pinoys, having only 8 branches in the country (including SM Megamall, Ever Gotesco – Manila, Aldevinco - Davao and Robinson’s Place – Iloilo). It offers a grand idea for book printing, however; it has a “books on demand” offer, where you could order a particular book title which they could reprint in a matter of minutes. No more out of print titles; try out this option if you ever have a hard time looking for that one book you’re just dying to read.

Those book stalls in Recto

Yes, they have to be included here in this list. If you’re looking for previously-owned highschool or college reference books, take the time to scour through stalls at Recto. Just remember not to be too obvious at showing your glee once you learn the price - we’re talking 70% off bookstore prices; you could probably ask for an even

lower price, if your bargaining skills are sharp. Just be sure to check the pages to see if they’re all there!

OUR ORGANIZATION Driven by the mutual desire to promote literacy and readership awareness among Filipino children, National Book Store Inc. (NBSI), Anvil Publishing, Inc. and the Reading Association of the Philippines (RAP) launched the Buklat Aklat Mobile Library Project in 1998. Buklat Aklat is a collection of about 500 books covering the fields of Math, Science, Philippine Literature and Culture that visits public elementary schools, public libraries and barangays nationwide. The mobile library gives every Filipino child the chance to freely browse and read good books. The responses from each school visited across the country were really overwhelming since many of them do not have libraries at all. But due to logistical problems, Buklat Aklat temporarily halted. It was then revived after National Book Store Foundation, Inc. (NBSFI) was established towards the end of 2004 by the third generation of NBSI's Ramoses. NBSFI holds the responsibility for the continuous implementation of the Buklat Aklat Mobile Library Project as its acts as the official socio-civic arm of NBSI. The alarming problem of inaccessibility to basic services in education has also prompted NBSFI to venture to other projects that aims to help the underprivileged acquire rightful access to quality education. These projects are not only limited to the mobile library but also has extended to book and school supplies donation programs. Recognizing its efforts, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed between the

Department of Education (DepEd) and NBSFI in 2005. DepEd assists the Foundation in the implementation of its programs to public schools. DepEd has also enlisted NBSFI as one of their partners under its Adopt – A –School Program.

In 2006, NBSFI has also acquired accreditation from the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC). PCNC was established to certify non-profit organizations that meet established criteria for financial management and accountability in the service to underprivileged Filipinos. Certification by PCNC is a "seal of good housekeeping" that funding partners and prospective donors may consider in their choice of organizations to support. In addition, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) recognized NBSFI’s effort to contribute in the upliftment of the poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged sector of our society.

VISION

We see a future where all Filipinos love to read.

MISSION

GOALS      

We aim to make Filipinos love books and we shall develop readers by making books more accessible to the people who need them the most.

To assist underprivileged children acquire rightful access; To encourage reading, especially among public school children; To promote reading and its importance to the development of nation by exposing young children to a wide selection of reading materials; To foster reading as a lifelong habit among Filipino children; To provide a venue for reading through mobile libraries and reading corners in the schools and barangays; and To help build up-to-date, fully stocked libraries in public schools especially in underserved areas in the country.

OUR PROJECTS Buklat Aklat Mobile Library Buklat Aklat is a collection of about 500 books covering the fields of Science, Math, Philippine Literature and Culture that visits public elementary schools and other impoverished learning centers nationwide, giving every Filipino child the chance to freely browse

and read good books. The mobile library also provides activities such as storytelling, author or illustrator talks and even teacher and parenting workshops on reading. Since then, the mobile library has already visited close to a hundred schools and learning centers benefiting more than a thousand kids. Buklat Aklat Leave Behind Library Project Started in 2007, the Buklat Aklat Leave Behind Library is an offshoot project of the mobile library consisting of a similar collection with that of the Mobile Library. This library has more reference and reading materials such as the Book of Knowledge, almanacs, dictionaries, novels and other awarding winning literary materials. Unlike the Mobile Library, the Leave Behind Library is permanently donated to a chosen scholastic institution. Children can now enjoy longer access to good quality reading materials. Buklat Aklat Mobile Library Cart This project aims to reach more underserved areas with a creative means of acquiring knowledge through reading. The Buklat Aklat Mobile Library Cart Project aims to deliver the ―wonders‖ of reading books to far flung barangays, by creating a make shift reading area where the community children can gather and experience the benefits of reading. Handog Ko, Aklat Mo: A Christmas Book Drive Last November 2006, NBSFI has launched it’s first-ever book raising campaign involving the NBS community. The campaign was aimed at encouraging all NBS patrons to purchase books as donations which were turned-over to different public scholastic institutions for their library start-up. Because of its success, NBSFI and NBS will now adopt this project on a yearly basis hoping that more customers will participate to help more children realize their dream of having good reading books within their reach.

Buklat Aklat Mileage (BAM) Fund raising Patrons of National Book Store Inc. can now directly help public school children realize their dream of having a well-stocked and updated library in their schools by buying B.A.M. marked products. What makes it possible for National Book Store patrons to directly help in this project? The answer is that part of the proceeds from the B.A.M products goes directly to NBSFI to fund more Buklat Aklat Libraries for public schools nationwide. The more B.A.M. products you buy, the more mileage you give Buklat Aklat to reach less fortunate readers in the country.

OUR BENEFICIARIES Since 1998, the Buklat Aklat Mobile Library Project has benefited close to 1000 schools all over the country. With the birth of NBSFI and its projects, several education-related groups have been assisted–from public schools, libraries, barangay daycare centers and other civic and nonprofit organizations. These were all carefully chosen to ensure the organization’s line of thrust. For soliciting organization(s), a letter of inquiry must be submitted to NBSFI. This will help us evaluate the amount of support we can extend.

National Book Store, Pizza Hut partners to build libraries The National Book Store Foundation, Inc., together with celebrity actor Diether Ocampo and Pizza Hut recently treated 100 schoolchildren from Tagapo Elementary School in Laguna to a day of reading fun during the Book It Buklat Aklat (BIBA) Leave Behind Library turnover.

Ocampo read ―Bilog na Itlog‖ by Al Santos and Josefina Sanchez to the delight of the first grade kids. ―Reading will open a lot doors and help kids realize their dreams,‖ Ocampo said. ―Having experienced hardships when I was growing up, I wanted to share all the blessings that I have been receiving by giving children the tools to improve their condition in life.‖

On the other hand, National Book Store Foundation Chairman Trina Alindogan says: ―Reading and education are really the keys to a brighter future for kids. We have to encourage the kids to read and we have to do what we can to get them a better education. Every little bit helps.‖

In addition to the library, the students from Tagapo also received school supplies from the National Book Store Foundation’s Project Aral drive which gathered study kits from loyal National Book Store patrons.

BIBA, a collaborative effort of the two companies, aims to increase reading interest among public school children by helping schools and communities furnish and refurbish their libraries.

Help us in our pursuit Be a Volunteer Interested school organizations, civic volunteer groups and even concerned individuals can do so much. There are various ways to reach out to public school children. NBSFI encourages everyone to lend a hand and let the children know that you care for their future. Build libraries NBSFI continues to seek assistance from various corporate groups, socio-civic organizations and even private individuals with the same ideals of promoting reading and education in the Philippines.

We provide the largest selection of products and services, reaching more customers through our growing branch network, and spreading the love of reading and learning through our advocacy and community campaigns. Our vision is to build a thousand knowledge centers in the Asia-Pacific region by 2025.

Our core values are: having Malasakit, being Innovative, having Dignity in what we do, being Service-Oriented and striving for Excellence and working as Team. Having this MINDSET is key to our success. Our History Luck is only a small part of National Book Store's success. Through the hard work and powerful leadership of Socorro Cancio-Ramos and the late Jose Ramos with their family, the company has evolved from its humble beginnings into the biggest and strongest bookstore chain in the Philippines. 1930's -1940's: HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The first National Book Store started as a stall shop in Escolta before the Japanese occupation selling supplies, GI novels, and textbooks. When war broke out, strict book censorship forced them to shift their trade to soap, candies, and slippers. They bought their merchandise from wholesalers and peddled them to smaller retailers. Liberation came, but the whole Escolta area was burned to the ground. Having all their stocks reduced to ashes left the couple with nothing but determination and an undying drive to succeed. And their persistence paid off. They were able to rebuild a barong-barong in the corner of Soler and Avenida Rizal in time to catch the post-war business boom. They went back to business using their door as a counter for selling textbooks, notebooks, pad paper, and pencils. Business went very well because during that time, there were only a few stores that sold school supplies and books. National Book Store's opening was strategically timed to welcome the first postwar school year. 1948 brought another trial to the Ramos' life. Typhoon Gene destroyed their store and soaked all the merchandise. But this did not dampen the spirit and tenacity of the couple to pursue their dream and rebuild National Book Store. Adversity forced them to work harder. They slept for only three hours a day, spending the rest of their hours at work. They were eventually able to construct a two-story building with a mezzanine, which was to become their retail store for many years. 1950’s-1960’s: INCREASING PRODUCT LINES In the 1950's, Mrs. Ramos thought of producing a line of greeting cards and postcards using Philippine views and artwork. It was a brilliant move for her to earn more by creating a distinct design and at the same time to promote Filipino customs and traditions to the rest of the world. Later on, they acquired the Philippine franchise for Hallmark cards. It was also at this time that the couple began a publishing program through the assistance of international publishers such as McGraw-Hill, Prentice Hall, Lippincott, Addison-Wesley, and others. In 1955 and after five years of negotiations, the Ramoses were able to acquire a piece of prime property owned by the Guerreros. It was only in 1963, however, that the construction of the Albecer Building began. This building was named after their three children -- Alfredo, Benjamin,

and Cecilia. Little did they know that this nine-story building was the first of many that they would build. 1970's-1990's: STEADY EXPANSION When their children grew, they persuaded their parents to expand beyond Avenida Rizal. Although they were reluctant at first, the Ramos couple realized the opportunity envisioned by their children. They opened a new branch on Recto Avenue, a place catering to students. In the 1970's, they were able to acquire space in new shopping centers opening up in Cubao and Makati. This started the National Book Store chain's steady growth and by the 1990’s there were over 50 branches across the country.

A NEW COMPANY LOGO 1996 brought significant change to National Book Store. The family decided to change the company logo and commissioned a Singapore design company to execute the new company identity. A modernized script evolved, the stripes made solid with a bolder shade of red. This has spawned a change in the store layout as well. Color-coded signages and logical merchandise displays provide a customer-friendly atmosphere in the branches. NATIONAL BOOK STORE: AN INSTITUTION Over sixty years of focused energy has brought National Book Store to where it is now: the pinnacle of the bookstore industry in the Philippines. More than that, the National Book Store family takes pride in its role as an institution that supports education and enhances lives by providing the best and widest selection of educational, professional, and social communication products. The values that took Mr. and Mrs. Ramos through adversity -- hard work, shrewd business skills and a strong sense of social responsibility -- remain the driving force for the whole Ramos family, their 2,500 employees in over 108 branches, and will keep National Book Store ahead in the next century.

INNOVATIONS The start of the new millennium ushered in exciting innovations at National Book Store. A loyalty program named Laking National, which literally mean, ―having grown up with National Book Store‖, was launched. The program underscored the affinity of the company’s brand with its most valued and loyal customers. Laking National was created to retain its most valuable customers and provide additional value for the business they have given National Book Store over the years. Members are given exclusive discounts on selected items, exclusive privileges and services, as well as benefits from

partner establishments.

A magazine-type product catalog showcasing the latest in

school and office supplies is produced yearly in time for the back-to-school season. The ―Magalogue‖ is free to any customer who wishes to browse and use it to make their shopping list.

―Passages‖ was recently added to the list of communication tools for National Book Stores’ partners in education. "Passages‖ is a National Book Store quarterly magazine for reading educators. It’s an avenue to share information and connect with the proponents of the

benefits of reading.

To further support National Book Store’s Purpose, the

National Book Store Foundation Inc. was officially established in 2004. The foundation reaches out to people all over the country and spreads the message that through reading and learning, people can

pursue their dreams and realize their life’s purpose.
