Mundane charts: the basics By Visti Larsen, Guide and Guru: Sanjay Rath The use of Jyotiṣa to predict the tides of a country or help the rulers manoeuvre in matters of war, diplomacy was quite common among the royal families of Asia, Mesopotamia and Europe. Jyotiṣa were also known to have been involved in the formation of the USA, and were instrumental in forming their capitol Washington D.C. Today the use of Jyotiṣa by those in power is still prominent, but is appropriately done mostly in secrecy by the regents of the globe. The royal family of Nepal were well known to have consulted astrologers and a royal council of the same existsed and made excellent use of the principles of Horā Śāstra as taught in Vedic India. Despite the Nepalese royal family in recent past being ousted from their throne, the Nepalese Astrologers had predicted the same outcome some 40-50 years prior to the same event. More recent claims have emerged stating that Jyotiṣa doesn’t find any place in the Veda or Purāṇa wherein the basis of the Vedic faith lies. Such claims find little ground after analysing the Ṛg Veda, Atharva Veda, Nārada Purāṇa, Agni Purāṇa, Garuda Purāṇa and Narasimha Purāṇa, which contain detailed Jyotiṣa principles which still haven’t been made available in the public scene.
What is a mundane chart? A Mundane chart is a Muhūrta or chart drawn for the beginning of any activity or the beginning of certain calendar dates. Popular traditional calendar dates in the Vedic calendar are those of the twelve Sankranti (solar ingress) of the year, i.e. when the Sun enters the beginning of any particular sign. Also each of the twelve New and Full Moons which occur in a year are such important calendar dates. Herein is included the annual solar and lunar eclipses of which there are a total of four in a year. Among these events, the New and Full moon in the month of Chaitra, the solar ingress into Aries and the four eclipses of the year are the most important in predicting the fate of countries and government. In natal charts these two, namely the solar reoccurrence and the lunar reoccurrence correspond to the annual solar return and the annual Tithi return respectively. The eclipses become of relevance to a person when they occur over the Nakṣatra of natal Lagna or Moon. Where the solar return refers to the opportunity for work and karma yoga, it is specifically the lunar return chart in the form of Tithi that the tradition holds in high esteem and is a means to understand what real karma the person must undergo in their life. Besides the important calendar dates the time for the initiation of a kingdom, country, government, initiation of contracts, deals, wars or reformation of a countries policies and laws, are also analysed to analyse the results of the mundane chart.
Analysing the mundane chart In the work Praśna Mārga by Sri Harihara (Harihara, 1980, pp. II-213) the houses indicating the various affairs of a mundane chart are indicated. Bhāva 1st 2nd

The third house is the sixth (enemy) of the government and in a democracy will represent the opposing party to the incumbent party. Further, the Lagna representing the regent him- or her-self, does not apply to the regent’s work but to his/her presence and health and this should further be analysed for any danger to the presiding ruler’s health. Graha Sun Moon Mars Mercury Jupiter

In a democracy the fifth house indicates the voters and their influence is of prime importance during elections. The eleventh house indicates the gains of the country through taxes whilst the twelfth is important for their expenses. A connection between the twelfth house and the third or sixth can indicate expenses on account of war or fighting enemies.
The Charakāraka can also be allotted to various categories depending on their significance. The Ātmakāraka is the desire of the king or regent, Amātyakāraka is the heir or opposition, Bhrātṛkāraka is the policy adopted by the nation, Mātṛkāraka indicates the state of those living in the country, Pitṛkāraka are the wise men or advisors of the king, Jnātikāraka are the neighbours and possible enemies of the country and the Dārakāraka indicates all partners and supporters of the nation. The Putrakāraka is left out making the scheme only one of seven Charakāraka for the purpose of analysing mundane charts.
Chaitra Pratipada chakra Tradition tells us that the chart drawn for Chaitra Pratipada or the new moon of the month of Chaitra is combined with the charts of the various solar ingresses to make predictions (Rath, 2006). The Chaitra Pratipada chart is said to show the karma of the ruler and the country. The ruler of the day will specifically represent this ruler in the chart and his/her fortunes; hence special care was always drawn to making this chart. The solar ingress charts show those whom are carrying out the will of the ruler and act like ministers of a monarch/ruler. Specifically the day lord of the solar ingress into Aries will indicate the military chief, whilst the day lord solar ingress into Libra can show the minister of trade or finances, thus the function depends on the nature of the sign wherein the ingress is made. Among the signs special care is taken to the solar ingress to the four movable signs as they attend to the most important issues for a country. The rulers of the day of all these solar ingress are examined in the chart drawn for the Chaitra new moon to see how the various ministers are acting in respect to the ruler. The Rajjyotiṣa or Jyotiṣa for the rulers are taught specific types of spiritual penance to prepare an analysis of such a chakra and thus be able to predict the events for the country or region in the year ahead.

1849 was a big turning point in Danish history where the monarchy was substituted for constitutional monarchy out of fear of the earlier revolutions in France affecting the Danish rule, as nationalism had been growing in the country which consisted of 1/3rd ethnic Germans. The solar ingress in to Aries occurred on Wednesday the 11th of April 1849 and we must analyse the position of Mercury in the Chaitra Pratipada chart for the prime-minister or chief of the army, whilst Saturn represents the king or monarch in the chart itself as the event occurred on a Saturday. At first glance the nodes along the 1/7 axis do not bode well for the monarch and the neighbours where tense ties can erupt as a result.
Saturn representing the monarch is in the eighth house showing long life and lasting presence, but is joined the Lagna lord Sun indicating that this will have to occur after a change in the monarchy which can lessen or deprive the regent of his/her importance. Mercury bring the prime-minister shows the entry of a young man in an old man’s (Saturn) world, and a risk of the newcomer falling and hurting the kingdom badly due to a mistake (Mercury joined Ketu causes breakage of bones). Mercury aspects the Lagna and is Vargottama and shows the prime-minister taking on the roles of the regent, and being in the seventh house (Māraṇa Kāraka Sthāna) it shows that he will make terrible mistakes in the diplomacy and foreign policy which will affect the taxes (eleventh lordship) and treasury (second lordship) of the country. Since Mercury is Mātṛkāraka this will affect the state of the people living in the country and this will be based on the differences in language and writing (Mercury). Saturn lords the seventh house of diplomacy and sixth house of enemies, showing that the change in the monarchy will give a completely new stance towards the neighbours of the country showing how neighbours
can become foes and the old foes becoming defeated. The borders will be carved out by the ninth house and lord and with ninth lord Mars in the sixth house and exalted it shows a very strong enemy which will shake the borders of the country, but the kingdoms borders will not change as the ninth lord is exalted and this enemy will come from the south (Mars) and being Bādhakeśa he will note show his real motive. Rāhu and Saturn which afflict the Lagna and Lagna lord respectively rule the west and south-western directions. As it was, Denmark was involved in a civil war with the region of Prussia. This consisted of the northern part of Germany and the south/south-western part of Denmark (Saturn & Rāhu). Prussia at the time made up 1/3rd of the population of Denmark and ½ of its earnings (Mercury’s lordship). The reason for the occurrence was the lack of male heirs to the throne of Denmark (Surya doṣa) after the demise of the then monarch the previous year. The real trigger was the then instalment of the king’s sister (Moon joined Saturn), which being a lady was considered an illegal action as it went against the then laws of the region. A truce had failed during February earlier the same year, and on 3rd April just nine days after the New Moon, during the compressed Vimśottari Daśā of sixth lord Saturn fighting renewed. Mercury Mahādaśā followed from 13th April to 5th of June and the new regents or prime-minister was set to reform the monarchy. Constitutional monarchy was installed on June 5th 1849. Mercury will give the results of Ketu due to the conjunction and throughout this time the war with Prussia raged on and the Danish treasury dwindled. After continuous months of fighting with Prussia on 10th June 1849 peace talks were held. The Mahādaśā running was Ketu which will give the results of Mercury and thus a temporary peace was to come. Yet, Mercury is in Māraṇa Kāraka Sthāna and any agreement signed is not likely to be lasting. Help came from Germany (south – Mars the secret enemy) which suggested the instalment of a sovereign who was neutral to both Denmark and Prussia and ensured peace for one year (Mercury guarantees peace) for the exhausted Prussian region. Mars is also the Bādhakeśa in the sixth house showing a very secret or hidden enemy coming to ensure the borders are kept (Mars is exalted). Fate would have it that later Prussia became annexed by Germany in the second war between Prussia and Denmark, and finally completely during the First World War. Thus under the guise of being a supporter, Germany later went on to redefine the borders of Prussia and Denmark.

Aries Solar ingress: Thursday (Jupiter) Chaitra Krishna Pratipada (Full Moon): Sunday (Sun) The Islamic revolution in Iran 1978 culminated in the removal of the previous constitutional monarchy wherein the Shah’s of Iran reigned, and the instalment of an Islamic republic. The events that led to this began more prominently from the early 1970’s, but it was the year of 1978 unto early 1979 which brought about the main steps towards the creation of the republic. The monarch or Shah of Iran is seen from the day lord Venus which is placed in the eighth house. This is further joined first and tenth lord Mercury showing that the role of monarch and governance of the country are held by the same person namely the Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi and his rule is coming to an end or he will be forced to flee his country. With Rāhu in the Lagna the Shah is highly unpopular and danger is there to his life. Jupiter lords the day of the Aries solar ingress and will represent Dr. Shapour Bakhtiar the then primeminister. Jupiter indicates intellectual and idealistic rule and is placed in the tenth house of governance, and rules the Ghātaka Lagna showing the ability to wield power, and is further Bādhakeśa due to its lordship of the seventh house indicating support from foreign countries. The then Shah was branded as a human rights violator by the US Government (Gemini), under Jimmy Carter, and gave the prime-minister the needed edge to exercise a strong opposition towards the Shah. Jupiter is further in the Navāṁśa of Scorpio which is the third house of battle and war in the chart. Jupiter and Venus though both being Gurus are enemies, where Venus runs the camp of materialists, as Jupiter runs the camp of divine seekers. The Sun is the day lord of the Chaitra Krishna Pratipada (Full Moon) and will represent the spiritual leader or marja’s in Iran who are a select few proficient in the Quran and authorised by their teachers to declare the laws of Islam based on the same. They are also known as Grand Ayatollah. The Sun (Grand Ayatollah) has a naturally friendly relationship with Jupiter (prime minister) but
is a dire enemy of Venus (Shah). The Sun is in the Navāṁśa of Capricorn which is the fifth house of power in the Rāśi chart and shows great popularity and support for the rule of priests. Ayatollah Khomeini had grown increasingly popular and despite being exiled from Iran, had continued a political campaign against the Shah. Using compressed Vimśottari Daśā for one year; Mercury Daśā (Shah’s downfall begins) began the year and saw several demonstrations and destruction of hotels, cinemas, banks, government offices and other symbols of the Shah’s regime. One such major occurrence which also took the lives of many due to clashes with security forces occurred during Ketu Daśā, Rāhu Antaradaśā.

Ketu lords the third house of battles and clashes and is joined the Sun ruling the clerics of the country. Religious leaders and students (Sun disposits fifth lord Saturn) took to the streets in riots against the then Shah’s rule. Notably Venus (Shah) is placed in the twelfth house of loss and the lord of that house is the Sun (Ayatollah) ruling his fate. This same Sun is placed in the fifth house of power. In an attempt to appease the people, the Shah attempted to create a stable economy by dampening inflation and cutting costs. He also sacked his head of security and promised free elections the following June. Venus (Shah) lording the second house shows the power to affect finances and security (ninth lordship), but being placed in the eighth house shows that he will cause his own undoing. Mercury being the tenth lord shows that the countries efficiency will fall and many young workers (Mercury) were sacked to create the cutbacks and these same workers living in the city slums then joined the demonstrations in massive numbers. This grew even stronger in the Mahādaśā of the Sun (Ayatollah) which lasted over the summer and shows the massive support for the Ayatollah. Over the late summer of 1978 the Shah sought help from the USA to quell an impending revolution. The Daśā’s of Sun and Moon are running and are both joined the Sun in the seventh house representing the
Ayatollah and showing that the neighbours and partners (seventh house) will not support the Shah. This was particularly because of the bad reputation the Shah’s rule had gotten by the government of President Carter. Despite complete disarray Iran, the CIA brought forth and analysis in August starting that Iran wasn’t at risk of revolution in the near future! Surely this is the result of Bādhaka at work where the allies do not help because they either misunderstood or deliberately do not want to interfere. The confusion caused by the Bādhaka was so intense that despite demonstrators repeatedly targeting and burning movie theatres and killing 400 people, the Shah was blamed by the family and relatives of the demised for all the incidents. Even claims that the Shah’s security force had done so to frame the opposition were raised. The situation became even more intense as the Shah declared martial law in Moon Daśā, Venus Antaradaśā resulting in a massive protest killing 84 demonstrators by security forces, the particular day being known as Black Friday. Mars Mahādaśā had come and being the third lord as well as dispositor of the Lagneśa and Venus (Shah) the Shah was to flex his muscles. Yet, Mars is debilitated in the eleventh and could bring a largely opposite result. Mars is placed in the sixth house in the Rudrāṁśa showing that the enemy will be suffering and being in Aquarius this can cause displacement (lorded by Rāhu). Ayatollah Khomeini ran his campaign from the neighbouring Iraq, and the Shah drawing on his influence sought to get the Ayatollah deported. The Ayatollah was forced to travel to Paris after being rejected entry into Kuwait (Mars shows difficulty at borders). He then finally travelled to Paris, but this ended up becoming a great source of support for him (Shah failed: third lord is debilitated) as he became the news of the world then, appearing in magazines and interviews all over the world. Further the Ayatollah’s exile had been heard in Iran where his support had become even stronger as Rāhu Daśā passed and gave the Shah a further bashing to his reputation (Rāhu in Lagna and in Bādhaka sign in Rudrāṁśa). With the advent of Jupiter Daśā the end was near. In Rāśi Jupiter represents the prime-minister who is clearly supporting the Ayatollah and clerics of the country (Sun). Jupiter is placed in the eighth house of the Rudrāṁśa (D-11) and shows religious disturbances in the country as well as many demonstrators (Mercury) who are lacking work filling the street squares of the capitol (Aries) and asking the Shah to leave the country (eighth house is the end of longevity of the ruler). Two million demonstrators filled the streets at this time asking for the removal of the Shah at this time. The Daśā-Antaradaśā was Jupiter-Mercury which are the exact two Grahas in the eighth house in the Rudrāṁśa. Again we see the Rudrāṁśa giving very accurate results. Loss of power/position can only come once the fifth house has had its say. Fifth lord is Saturn placed in the twelfth house (loss of power) and is placed in the sign Leo (Grand Ayatollah – Sun). During Saturn Daśā, Mercury Antaradaśā the prime-minister asked the Shah to leave his post and the country. During Saturn Daśā, Venus Antaradaśā Ayatollah Khomeini arrived back in Tehran after his long exile. Venus representing the loss of power of the Shah sealed the arrival of new leaders, and so began the Decade of Fajr from February 1st until February 11th. The prime-minister invited Khomeini to form a Vatican state in the city of Qom. Jupiter always works on the behalf of the Sun as it is the natural kāraka or doer on behalf of the Sun. On arrival Khomeini clearly rejected the proposal of then prime-minister Bakhtiar’s to form a government. Whilst Jupiter works for the Sun, Sun is the Vedhaka or piercer/knower of weaknesses of Jupiter, and a New Moon Sun will never accept the ideals of Jupiter, as Sun is himself the king! On February 4th in the same Daśā-Antaradaśā Khomeini appointed his own competing interim prime-minister for elections! He further claimed that ‘since I have appointed him he must be obeyed’. It was ‘Gods government’ he warned, and
disobedience against which was ‘a revolt against God’. On February 9th during Saturn Daśā, Venus Antaradaśā fighting broke out between the imperial guard loyal to the Shah (Venus), and pro-Khomeini rebels with Khomeini declaring Jihad on the soldiers! The fighting ended on February 11th just a day before the advent of the Sun Antaradaśā. The fighting was over and later that year in June Iran presented its first constitution and declared them as an Islamic republic. In every annual new year chart for Washington DC since 2003, the weekday lord or vareśa is joined or lording the third or sixth house in the chart showing the tides for war in the country. In the 2008 chart Mars is the weekday lord and lords the sixth house confirming that the nation is still at war. Mars further aspects the eleventh house and shows that all the taxes of the country are being used for this purpose, and its Rāśi dṛṣṭi on the fifth house of voters where twelfth and eighth lords Mercury and Venus are placed is causing Viparīta Raja Yoga for the country at the cost of the voters or people. In addition the fifth house of the voters are suffering from Pravrājya yoga due to four planets being joined the same. On account of the Pravrājya yoga the Raja yoga of the ninth lord joined the two Kendra lords cannot function until the Daśā of a combust Graha. Herein Moon and Mercury are combust but Mercury being the eighth and eleventh lord is not benefitting the voters at all and instead making it harder for them on account of bad contracts. This no doubt must indicate the inappropriate amount of loans given by the banks to consumers. Moon on the other hand is more auspicious but due to being weak is quite malefic in the chart and can show support but not without anxiety affecting the public.

The particular cause of the Pravrājya yoga is seen from the strongest Graha, here Venus. Venus is the eighth and third lord from the fifth house and indicates that the voters have borrowed too much and are suffering for this, in this case at the hand of the banks who are also doing the same (Mercury).
The Keśari Yoga of Jupiter in Kendra to the Moon is auspicious and as Jupiter is the lord of the fifth house of voters and placed in the second house of treasury it guarantees great support coming from the countries own coffers. Jupiter is the vareśa for the solar ingress into Libra and shows that the ministers of finance will come to the rescue and ensure the continuity of the finances of the public. The chart for the upcoming year in Washington DC has Vareśa Jupiter placed in the eighth house in debilitation with Rāhu which does not bode well for the leader or causes some great unrest for the leader. Being the tenth lord it clearly affects the incumbent party and being the seventh lord it also affects the neighbours and allies. Yet, Jupiter is not associated with the third or sixth houses in anyway and shows that the previous years1 of armed conflict are coming to an end. To see exactly what this entails for the nation it’s essential to analyse the Navāṁśa. If Jupiter is associated with Rāhu herein then great shock may hit the 1

country due to the demise of someone. If this associates with the twelfth and eighth houses then the leader(s) of the country will be killed, whilst if associated with the second or sixth houses then a major enemy or opponent suffers the same fate. In the given Navāṁśa, with Aquarius Lagna, Jupiter and Rāhu mutually aspect confirming the previous mentioned risk. Neither are associated with the eighth or twelfth houses showing that the leader is not at risk. Instead Jupiter lords the second house and presents this risk to a major enemy. Jupiter is in Leo showing that it is surely a politician and could have their Lagna associated with Leo or a strong Sun. Ātmakāraka is Jupiter and shows that the leader is taking on this karma personally and the reputation of the nation and the leader will be negatively affected by this. However, this will end up benefitting the nation as the vareśa is the lord of the Kendra in the Rāśi chart and is a sure promise of prosperity for the nation following this, and specifically in the growth of foreign ties due to the lordship of the seventh house. Rāhu and Jupiter Daśā will arrive at the end of the year beginning from around November. It is during this time that we can expect to see its results. The fifth house of voters is not out of the rut yet. The fifth lord Venus despite being exalted is joined a debilitated Mercury in a Pravrājya yoga in the tenth house. The incumbent party is amassing a great deal of resources and with the twelfth lord Venus placed there the expenses are huge. This Pravrājya will break in the second quarter of this year with the coming of Mercury Mahādaśā and again in September with the coming of Moon Mahādaśā. This will bring new ways out of the financial issues and is sure to benefit the population and government. However, the financial issues of the population will not be fully overcome until the year of 2010 with the advent of the next Chaitra Śukla Pratipada Chakra. OM TAT SAT
