Safer than ever!
It’s no more just rules and regulations; a safe environment is what Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) provides you. The Airport Safety Week organised by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) last month was an effort in this direction. Based on the theme, ‘Safety is not an Option’, the airport observed the safety week with a collage of events and activities.
Cleanliness drive during safety week
Everybody told us ‘better safe than sorry’. Even as kids, we learnt that prevention was better than cure. Just imagine if you were to fly without a safety blanket underneath? In today’s world safety is no more just another guideline meant to be followed. It’s an attribute that’s as important as breathing. CSIA observed the Airport Safety Week from August 16 -23, 2010, to make sure that safety is imbibed as a habit and not just another set of rules and regulations. Coordinated by Quality, Safety & Environment Department of MIAL, the Safety Week brought together all CSIA employees in their single minded focus to keep the airport safer than ever. Through various workshops and seminars, MIAL endeavoured to create a safety culture among various stakeholders and airport personnel which would ultimately help in enhancing the safety climate at CSIA. Various safety awareness contests like safety slogans and photography on safe/unsafe work practices were held to engage employees in this initiative. Prizes were also announced for the Best Apron Discipline, Best Maintained Vehicles and Best Housekeeping. This was to encourage employees to follow rules & regulations while working at the airside, like maintaining vehicles in good conditions and keep their work areas clean and safe. Safety is vital to aviation. And in this Safety Week it was made sure that this message
reaches to one and all involved in the system. As part of CSIA’s safety promotion initiatives, a Runway Excursion Risk Reduction workshop was held jointly with International Air Transport Association (IATA). Runway Excursions (when aircraft veers off the runway including overrun, overshoot or lose directional control during landing & takeoff) are highly dangerous. It is estimated that 97 per cent of all runway related aircraft accidents occur due to Runway excursions. The workshop held at Hotel Sahara Star was attended by senior pilots (examiners and instructors) and safety experts from airlines in India which included scheduled, general aviation and cargo operators. It was also attended by Directorate General of Civil Aviation officials, various Indian airport operators, Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) and Communication-Navigation-Surveillance personnel from Airports Authority of India. Also, an Industry Best Safety Practices seminar was held during the week where experts from industries like airlines, ATC, railways, roadways, shipping, oil & natural gas,

construction and CSIA spoke about the Safety Management System and best safety practices followed by them. Even the media was invited for a session wherein they were briefed about Airport Operations and Safety Management System and safety initiatives carried out at CSIA. A major cleanliness drive was also undertaken at various sites on airside and cityside. CSIA employees took part in the Safety Week activities with much enthusiasm. While some wore masks and gloves to clean out these areas, others made sure that safety norms were followed diligently at the airport. A basic fire fighting and first aid training too was conducted by the Emergency Services Department of MIAL for the CISF personnel posted at CSIA. MIAL, through this highly successful initiative, made sure that CSIA becomes safer than ever and maintains its safe environment not just by observing Safety Week, but all round the year.

BOARDING PASS A THREESOME IN GOA! Prancing in front of the Mumbai airport elevator little Jahnvi Asarpota posed like a ramp model along with her father, while mommy captured the fun start to their happy monsoon holiday. For the Asarpota family, the celebration started from the minuite they reached the CSIA terminal. When asked where they were off to, Bharat Asarpota , who by the way was as excited as his 14 month old daughter, gushed about their family holiday in Goa. “We are going for a monsoon holiday. Just like that!” explained Harsha Asarpota. Bon voyage, we say.

Fashion PORT Gone are the days when our mothers used to dress us up in our Sunday best, for the much awaited plane ride. But, even today the airport is full of fashion surprises. And we are on the look out for the most unusual or attractive dresses and accessories at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai.
LakshmiÕ s shoes Flying to Cochin from Terminal 1C, we spotted Lakshmi buried in her newspaper. But what caught our attention was the pair of shoes she was wearing. Made of brown leather, this pair of flat sandals which look like mojaris were plain, but stylish much like its owner.

VanslaÕs designer tote
SumanÕ s party feet
NiharÕ s jacket
This month’s best, however, has to be Vansla’s (travelling to Delhi) white Prada tote. Ruffled, white and very, very chic, the bag was a sure winner at the airport.
Suman, travelling with her mom-in-law to Mangalore, put her best foot forward in a pair of tapering toed catwalk pumps. Definitely HOT!
Children these days are more often better dressed than their older counterparts. We caught up with Nihar, flying to Mangalore with his family. This cute little boy flashed his grey jacket and a 1000 watt smile to every passerby.
