Movie Reflection for Im Not Ashamed and Magnifico...

Description

Movie reflection for ‘I’m not ashamed’ and ‘Magnifico’ By Jess Real A. Ancheta

I’m not ashamed   is

based from a true story of a high school

student named Rachel Scott, who grew up with strong faith despite the

odds

of

daily

life.

She

is

a

religious,

who

always

pray,

compassionate, and one who acknowledges God as Christ. But ended tragically, she was the first victim, shot 4 times, with other 14 people who were also killed of Columbine Massacre of 1999. Meanwhile,  Magnifico  or   or Pikoy, who is 9 year-old boy who is not

good

in

school

and

belongs

to

a

poor

family.

His father works as a carpenter but does not have permanent job, his elder brother has lost his academic sch olarship, and his mother spends her days caring for both Helen his younger sister, who suffers from cerebral palsy, and for her grandmother, who lives upstairs

in

the

family

home.

Despite how less-fortunate they are, he still manages to carry his family’s burden by doing ways to lighten it up.

Like Rachel, the ending of the story is too soon for them. He died too early and unexpectedly. Here is a table I came out with from the two movies. First column tells something about ‘I’m Not Ashamed’ that differs from ‘Magnifico’.

The

second

column

shows

the

similarities

of

both

stories. The third column is the counterpart of the first column.

 My Reviews for

I’m Not Ashamed

Rachel's personal journals inform much of the film. "If one person could go out of their way to show compassion, it coul d start a chain reaction,". She's especially kind to the marginalized at school and beyond, befriending a homeless teen who becomes her "big brother." Her journals authentically portray her struggle with pers onal faith. One entry reads, "I don't understand why having a walk wi th God is so hard for me. I'm so weak. At school, with friends, at work."

Genuine

faith

involves

a

personal

relationship

with

God.

Rachel establishes this, and becomes known at school for her faith and compassion. Her dedication echoes a New Testament statement: "I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is God's powerful method of bringing all who believe it to Heaven." (Romans 1:16) Owing to the fact Rachel died at a young age through the intolerance and hatred of others, she had written of her wishes to change the world for the better through the simple acts of love and kindness.  My Reviews for  Magnifico

If you have watched the movie, the reason why Magnifico died is because he was hit by a vehicle when he attempted to cross the highway to see Mang Domeng. And we all know the purpose of this meeting, Mang Domeng will about to tell Magnifico that he will give the wheelchair of his deceased mother to Helen. Helen is Magnifico's sister who is suffering from cerebral palsy, hence she can't

walk.

Mang

Domeng

was

moved

when

he

saw

how

Magnifico

sacrificed in carrying his sister just to let her see how the "Perya" looks like. In the burial scene, Magnifico’s father is

still carrying Helen. It would be good if the wheelchair has been included on that scene.

A scene to show Helen enjoying the comfort

and convenience of the wheelchair should have been added.

This could be a perfect mirror of how Christ sacrificed for us. Just like Magnifico, Christ had carried all our cross so we may receive the gift of life. The freedom and the gifts that we are enjoying right now are the result of the sacrifices of Christ when he carried our cross to the Calvary. Just as Helen received the

wheelchair

to

free

her

and

her

family

from

the

burden

of

cerebral palsy, we have been freed from the bondage of sin. That

old

lady

that

has

been

healed

by

Magnifico’s

medicine should have informed Magnifico’s family

herbal

that Magnifico’s

herbal medicine has healed her. This could help the family start a

new

business

to

augment

their

income.

If

you

can

remember,

Magnifico ask his grandmother to teach him how to make that herbal medicine to heal sore throat, so it’s the grandmother who knew t he

correct solution for that herbal medicine. If people knew about how

effective

it

was,

they

would

not

suffer

buying

expensive

medicines. And of course, this would help Magnifico’s family as

this could be a source of another income. Jesus is our Healer, and by healer we don’t limit him as

physical healer. He healed us not only from our physical aspect, but

also

our

spiritual

and

emotional

aspect.

We

too

can

heal

somebody. We all have the capability to heal somebody by just tapping them at the back, by giving compliments or by showing our priceless smile. That’s what Christ would like us to do. He wants

us healed, and he wants us hea l others. So let's share the healing that Christ's left as a legacy for all of us. At the end of the story, Magnifico’s father found out that his son was able to solve the rubik’s cube. Now, I think this part

is impossible. Magnifico’s father said he tried to sol ve the puzzle for almost one year but could barely able to do that. We know that solving a rubiks cube requires pattern and if you could not follow the pattern, you could not solve it. Now, how did Magnifico learn that pattern? It would be good if Magnifico solved the rubiks cube by painting it. Since he used paints to decorate his grandmother’s

coffin, that element could have been used. This is to signify that some problems could be difficult to solve as we don’t know how to

solve it, but there are some alternatives. Not all problems can be solved by conventional patterns, and I believe this is exactly the whole theme of the story. Magnifico did not only solve the rubik’s cube, but he solved the

problem of his family. And not only his family, but the community. Christ died on the cross to do the same mission. That is to free us from the problem, and that problem is sin. He freed us from sin, he solved the problem of the world.

Conclusion

While Magnifico had troubles about his family, Rachel had hers with the people around her. Although they were bullied by different factors, they were still optimistic to what life may offer. They were still hopeful that there is God who cares and loves. They were both prayerful and told other people about the Greatness of the Lord. The movie of Rachel tells us that compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer. This movie of Magnifico makes us realize how we should give importance to our family and even to those persons who are in need.

The two stories have the same genre; both dramatic, and both had tragic endings.

These movies are eye-openers and are must-watched.
