3 Students’ own answers. Possible answers: 1 Not everything you read on the internet is true. 5 The top three search results returned by a search engine are not always the most useful. (Sometimes they are paid advertisements.) 8 If a website contains lots of grammar errors and broken links, then it’s probably an unreliable source. 4 Students’ own answers.

4 Students’ own answers. Possible answers: 1 Some examples of Newton’s third law of motion: a) If you throw something heavy, the force of throwing it may push you backwards. b) The wings of a bird force air downwards. The air exerts the same force upwards. This pushes the bird into the air. 2 In the Principia (1687), Newton described the principles of time, force and motion in mathematical terms. 3 Newton invented calculus. This is the mathematical study of change. It is divided into differential calculus and integral calculus. It is used in physics, engineering, economics, statistics and medicine. 4 Newton built the first reflecting telescope. Light is reflected from a large mirror onto a smaller mirror and through a hole in the side of the telescope to form an image.

3 Students’ own answers. Possible answers: 1 Leather and rubber are used to make boots because they’re waterproof and flexible. 2 Ceramic, plastic and paper or cardboard are used to make cups. Ceramic and plastic are used because they’re good insulators and waterproof. Paper and cardboard are used because they’re cheap and the cups are disposable. 3 Wool is used to make jumpers because it’s natural, a good insulator, permeable and flexible.

Answer key CLIL 4 Glass is used to make windows because it’s transparent, waterproof and rigid. 5 Wood, plastic or metal are used for window frames because they’re opaque, rigid and waterproof. 6 Steel is often used to make knives, forks and spoons because it’s rigid, opaque and waterproof. Sometimes plastic is used because it’s disposable and can be recycled. 4 Students’ own answers. Possible answers: Natural materials: wood, stone, copper, bronze, iron, gold, silver, clay, silk, cotton, flax, hemp. Synthetic materials: nylon, acrylic, polyester, plastic, glass. 5 Students’ own answers.

3 Students’ own answers. Possible answers: 1 Like the rest of Europe, Spanish medieval theatre was closely linked to church rituals. Plays showed scenes from the Bible (for example, the Nativity and Epiphany) and were often staged in churches. Songs were an important part of medieval drama and were originally based on familiar religious tunes. Eventually, drama broke away from the church because the clergy got frustrated that the plays were moving away from their biblical roots and the people got frustrated because they wanted freedom of expression. 2 The Golden Age was a time when Spain’s culture was spreading through the New World and the Old, and this was reflected in the huge amount of art that was produced. Theatre was no different from the rest of the arts and it became very popular during this period. In parallel with Shakespeare’s England, a different type of drama appeared in the newly-built theatres in Madrid and other major cities. This drama was called comedia nueva and it combined elements from popular and classical theatre. 3 Miguel de Cervantes (El Trato de Argel and El Cerco de Numancia), Lope de Vega (Fuenteovejuna and El Perro del Hortelano),

3 1 T. Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is a condition where the body has little or no immune system. It occurs in about 1 in every 100,000 births. 2 T. When the plague hit Athens in 430 BC, the Greeks noticed that people who had survived the disease before didn’t catch it again and were therefore able to take care of those who became ill. 3 F. Research has shown that sleep deprivation affects the immune system’s ability to flight diseases. 4 T. (according to World Health Organization statistics.) 4 Students’ own answers. Possible answers: 1 A vaccination makes our immune system produce the antibodies for a disease without actually infecting us with the disease. 2 Vaccinations are important because they are a generally safe and effective way of fighting disease. 3 Diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and measles are common childhood vaccinations. 4 Edward Jenner used cowpox material to make a smallpox vaccination in 1796 (although there is evidence that smallpox material had been used earlier to provide immunity to that disease).

Answer key CLIL 1 People may move from rural areas to urban areas because there are more job opportunities, better education and healthcare and a generally better standard of living. 2 A reduced rural population can result in rural areas not being cared for. Often the local economies are damaged because there isn’t enough employment. 3 An increased urban population can lead to urban areas becoming overcrowded. This puts a strain on public services and can lead to unemployment because there are too many people for the jobs available. 4 Students’ own answers.
again. I noticed that the pitch of the sound was higher than it was before. Conclusions: When I blew the water in the bottle, I forced air in and out of the bottle making a vibration which produced a sound. When I added more water, there was less space for the air to move so it vibrated more quickly, producing a higher-pitched sound. This experiment demonstrates that that it is possible to change the pitch of a sound.

4 Students’ own answers. Possible answers: Equipment: an empty plastic bottle, some tap water Aim: To find out how different amounts of water in a bottle can affect the sound it makes when you blow on it. Method and observations: I put a small amount (approximately 4 cm) of water in a plastic bottle and blew gently over the top of it. It made a deep, low-pitched sound. I then added more water (approximately 4 cm) and blew over it
