Monologue II

Reflexiones sobre Rayuela  de  de Julio Cortazar

Reflections on Rayuela  by  by Julio Cortazar

para vibráfono y electrónica en vivo

for vibraphone and live electronics

José G. Martínez R

The Monologue is proposed as an analogy to the form of the novel Rayuela (Hopscotch) by Julio Cortázar. In this counter-novel, as he calls it, the Argentinian writer offers an unusual order for the reading. It is based on a lineal story set up with two parts called “del lado de allá” (from that side) and “del lado de acá” (from this side). In between the reading of these linear chapters there are gaps named Inserciones/Insertions where chapters coming from the second section “de otros lados” (from other sides) are inserted. These chapters may support, refute, complement the story or the simple pleasure for the reading and might lack any relationship with the main story. This way the novel is several novels at once and gives in to multiple interpretations. interpretations. The Monologue II has two sections formed by chapters. Numbered chapters (pages 1 to 8) work as a solid piece that narrates a lineal discourse. Named chapters with independent names compose the second section and they will be inserted in the gaps within the score marked as Inserciones/Insertions. The decision on the order for these insertions is absolutely up to the performer who might even determine not to insert any chapter at all. In the piece, analogue to Cortázar’s novel, the player (reader) will become an active performer and her/his decisions will shift the discourse of the piece and will bring variety to every single performance. performance. Named chapters are attached to a patch programmed in Max/Msp 6.0. This patch is in charge of the signal processing to the live electronics. A different person than the performer must monitor the computer controlling this patch which needs to know in advance the order for the insertions. The page 8, the last page of the piece, is designed so that the music keeps going continuously and the performer has once again the will to decide the order and the repetitions to be played. In order to achieve the actual end s/he needs to follow his instinct and will stop wherever it is desired.

- The performer will create two four-notes chords and will name them as #1 and #2. The election on the notes is free and they can be either or not linked to the notes of this page. - Notes in these chords will fill the question marks (?) following these instructions depending on the number written in the score: 1: Play the complete chord #1 2: Choose three notes of the chord #1 3: Choose three notes of the chord #1 and transpose them a major third up 4: Choose three notes of the chord #1 and transpose them a major third down 5: Play the chord #2

- If any note surpasses the register of the instrument it should be  played either an octave higher higher or lower as appropriate. - The performer needs to be aware of the different kinds of distributions and inversions of the chords since it will benefit widely the harmony and the quality of them.
