Mr Yeoh was deeply worried. He had little cash and the rent had to be paid by the next day. His wife said, “Perhaps you can ask our children for some...” Mr Yeoh merely looked at her. It was well known that their children would not lift a finger. “Hello! Mr Yeoh!” There was a shout from the front door. “Are you the landlord’s son?” he asked quietly, and with dignity. “I don’t have the rent yet but I will try to pay you somehow by tomorrow.” There was a strange expression of anguish on the young man’s face. “No, sir. Questions 5 – 10 Read the passage and answer the questions. Mr Current is an electrical engineer who loves inventing electrical appliances and equipment. He has many wonderful inventions but some of them are rather strange. On one occasion, he made a toaster that browned only sel ected parts of a slice of bread. He had a good time toasting the corners of a piece of bread. After showing his wife how to use the toaster, he gave it to her as a present. That was the last time Mr Current saw the toaster because his wife kept it in a st oreroom filled with what she called his ‘toys’. She continued using her old toaster that browned bread on both sides. On another occasion, Mr Current invented an electric toothbrush that cried “Ouch!” when a person hurt himself while brushing. He presente d it to his boss who tried out the toothbrush eagerly. His boss was so startled by the sound made by the toothbrush that he accidentally hurt himself a second time! Then there was the washing machine that washed, dried and did not crease clothes so that people need not have to iron them.
