(8) Makha, (9) Oo ttara, (10) Oottarashada, (11) Oottarabhadra are preferred. Jupiter, Venus or Mercury in the Lagna or Kendras, except the 7th will produce beneficial results from the marriage. The last 5 days of the month, Rikthathithies, Newmonday, Ashtami, Shasti, Vyatipatha and Vydruti should be left out. The 7th house from the marriage Lagna should be without any planets. Venus must not be in the 6th and Mars should be scrupulously avoided in the 8th house. /J
IX-N ishaka or Nuptia Is The constellation - (1) Sravana, (2) Rohini, (3) Hasta, (4) Anoradha, (5) Swati, (6) Raivati, (7) Moola, (8) Oottara (9) Oottaraashada (10) Oottarabhadhra, (11) Satabhisha are good. The 4th, 8th, 6th, 14th, 15th and 30th of a lunar month are bad as also the week days, Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday. The following Rasis are good-Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius, Pisces and Sagittarius. There should be no planets in the 8th house.
X-Prayana or Travelling On the 4th day of the dark half of a Lunar month, travelling towards the east is forbidden, on the 2nd and the 10th of a bright half towards the month, on the 3rd and 11 th towards the south-east, on the 5th and t3th towards the south, on the 6th and 14th towards the west en the 7th and 15th towards the north-west on the 8th .f the bright half and Amavasya towards the north -east.

Travelling towards the East on Tuesday, towards the South on Monday and Saturday towards the West on Wednesday and Thursday, towards the North on Friday are recommended in the astrological works, Persons should not go towards the:----'East on Saturday and Monday. West on Sunday and Friday North on Tuesday and Wednesday South on Thursday Good constellations for travelling are:-(1) Mrigasira (2) Aswini, (3) Pushyami (4) Punarvasu. (5) Hasta (6) Anoradha, (7) Sravana, (8) Moola, (9) Dhanista (10) Raivathi Travelling in Sagittarius gives victory over enemies in Taurus the person gets happiness, in Virgo he gets fever, in cancer political success, in Leo prosperity, in Scorpio boils and wounds, in Gemini and Aries he suffers death or accident, In Libra success, in Capricorn us imprisonment and disgrace, in Pisces fear from heavy rains or storms and in Aquarius good beating from robbers or bad people. When beneficial planets occupy quadrants or trines and evi I planets occupy the 6th, 3rd and 11 th houses, travelling is recommendod. Here it means that at the time a person starts, some sign of the Zodiac must rise as a matter of course and this Is called the Yatra Lagna or the Lagna (rising sun) for travelling. The conjunction of a planets must be taken with reference to this Lagna. Everyday at about 12 o' clock in the noon, the sun necessarily gets into the most powerful state' and that particular sign where he is most powerful is called Abhi-

jillagna, and this as stated by eminent Astrological writers, will minimise the evil influences a great deal and will facilitate success in all undertakinqs. Those who go on a piligrimage in the following Rasis will meet death; Aries, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio and Aquarius. XI-Tara Bala or Strength of the Star In the preceding paragraphs certain constellations are given as good for travelling, marriage, nuptials, education etc. The "Punchaka" or the "Five-source energy" should be carefully consulted, and if that proves unfavourable then good works ought not to be commenced at all. There are also two other sources of evil which should be carefully avoided. (1) They are Tara BaJa or the strength of constellation and (2) Chandra BaJa or the strength of the Moon. Short directions ~ will be given here to find out these. 'First try and remember fhe constellation (Nakhatra) which rules a man at his birth, and then count from it to the constellation which rules on the day at the time of starting or marriage or education and divide the figure by nine if it is divisible or if not take it as it is. Then apply the following:- (1) .Janrna, (2) Sampat, (3) Vipat, (4) Kshema, (5) Pratvak, (6) Sadhana, (7) Nidhana, (8) Mitra and (9) Parama Mitra. The names are indicative of their own results. Janma means birth and may be used in some cases but generally it shows danger to body. Sampat means wealth or prosperity and it is good. Vipat means loss or accident and it is bad. Kshema means good or prosperity and it is good. - Pratyak means loss of business or obstacles. Sadhana indicates steady works and it is good. Nidhana shows death and danger and must be avoided in all sorts of

work. Mitra and Parama Mitra indicate friendship and they are good. Take one or two illustrations. A man is born under the star Raivati and he wants to travel on the 10th March 1906. Counting from Raivathi we get on the 10th March 1906 the constellation Poobba and that means 12 constellations from Raivati to Poobba both inclusive. Deduct 9 out of this and then there is a balance of 3. According to the table given above 3 indicates VipatTara and he ought not to 'travel on that day as he is sure to meet with an accident. A man is born in Aswini and he wants to have his marriage celebrated on the 24th of April 1906. On that day we find Bharani and counting from Aswini we get 2. Two, as per above rules indicates Sampat Tara and is good, but as Bharani is a bad and condemned star for all good work, he should not get married although it is good for his star and he gets Tarabalam Chundrabala means the position of the moon at the time of birth or Lagna of a person. A man born in Aswini will have his moon placed in Aries. He wants to do a good thing on a day which contains the star Raivathi. The moon accordingly occupies Pisces on that day and will be therefore in the 12th house for a man who had the moon in Aries at the time of his birth. This is bad. A man born in Makha has his moon placed in Leo. He wants to do a thing on a day which is under the control of star Sravana. But the moon on that day will be in Capricorn us, and as Capricorn us is the 6th from Leo he must not do good work on that day. Therefore the moon should be avoided in the 6th, 8th and 12th houses specially for all good work from his position at the time of birth or from the rising. sign of the person at the time of his birth. Moon, it must be remembered, represents mind and position unfavourably occupied by him, will cause, sorrow, loss and misery to

mind. People should not run away with the idea that having secured these good conjunctions, they will at once achieve all favourable results and avoid all influences. The successes and failures of men or not so easy to be explained or guided. They are brought about by very cornpticatod energies working in many directions, and Astrology, like hygiene, throws a flood of good light upon minimising the evil and augmenting the good. This requires some explanations which should convince our numerous readers. Say a man is born in Baharani and Chandra is in Rohini. Chandra in this star gets exaltation and is said to attain the highest power to do good If so how could he do evil for a person born in Bharani. Rohini becomes Vipat Tara and work is prohibited in this. The position of a planet has a good deal to do with its influence and usefulness. Say you want to read in the night and get a powerful light' when the light is good you can read well and serve your interests. But suppose the light is placed behind your back or by your side, could you do your work? No, why, because though the light is powerful, the position you have taken or it has taken with reference to you is unfavourable, and the object to be gained will be frustrated. By unfavouble positions, the value is lost and dangers may arise by evil positions.
XII-Panchaka or Five-Source-Energy There are several methods by which this source of ~ood and bad time is prescribed. I shall here state briefly the most familiar and the easiest method for reference and guidance. Take the number of lunar days from the first of each lunar month" the number of week days from Sunday, the number of constellations from Aswini and the number ef signs ar Lagnas from the

Mesha and add them all together: A certain total figure will be obtained. Divide this by nine and look to the remainder. If the remainder is one, it is called mrityu , (death or danger). If it is two it goes under the name of Vahni [Fire]. If it is four it is called Rajapanchaka [royal]. If the remainder is six it is called Chorapanchaka [thievish] and if it is eight it gets the name of Rekhapanchaka disease. If' the remainder three or five or 'seven or there is no remainder, then it is good. Take two or three illustrations. After, finding the Tara and Chandrabala good; suppose a man wants to have his marriage on the 25th of May 1906, say at about 10 0' clock in the morning. The lunar day is the 2nd of Jaista and this gives us two. The week day is Friday and it gives six counting from Sunday. The constellation is Mrigasira and it is the fifth from Aswini or it gives us five. The rising sign on that day at about 10 0' clock in the morning will be Cancer or Kataka and this is the 4th from Aries and gives four. Now totalling up all. these we get lunar day two plus week day six, plus constellation five, plus rising 4 or 17. This divided by 9 will give us a remainder of 8 and the 8th indicates Rogapanchaka or that which shows sickness and misery. This must be avoided. Suppose on that day he tries to have the marriage at 12 0' clock Then he Will have the Lagna of Simha and as this gives 5, the total comes up to 18 which, when divid~'d by 9, gives no remainder and therefore will be good; provided other combinations are also favourable. A man wishes to have his nuptials at 11 -30 o' clock in the night on the 30th of June 1906. The lunar day is 9. The week day is 7. The constellation is chitta at the time end it is 14. The sign rising on that day at 11-30 Q' clock in

the night will be (about 45-30 ghatikas after sunrise) and Meena which is the 12th from Aries. Totalling up all these, we get 9 + 7 + 14 + 12 or 42. Divide this by 9 and there is a remainder of 6, which denotes Chorapanchaka. If he has his nuptials in this Lagna then there will be frequent thefts in his house. There are very many things which when properly understood and followed would tend to minimise the chances of evil influences indicated by planets. Lunar days, constellations. and rising signs, have power to avert the evils which would arise as a matter of fact from the attraction or combination of the subtle influences contained in time and the chemical changes which arise from the conjunctions and repulsions of various forms of energies, some of which are visible, while many of which are subtle and very mysterious in their nature. A wise man controls his planets while a fool obeys them.
XIII-Kshowra or Shaving People seem to laugh at the idea, when astrologers tell them, that they should have this operation on particular days and at particular times. The science of electricity (Vidyutsakti) was so perfectly known to the ancients that with a view to concentrate and conserve all good energies in man, and to dessipate and get rid of all evil forces in the human body, they have laid down certain rules, which, when studied by themselves, look quite arbitrary and meaningless, but which, when carefully examined in the light of conservation-of-energyprinciple-look most wonderful and striking with regard to the knowledge the ancient Rishis possessed in physical The famous scientist Rishi Vatchayayana sciences. thus explains the principles of electricity in his

He observes in the sutras thus-" Akshi (eyes), Vakshasi (chest) Kukshuocha (stomach) or belly, Siro (head) Madvavthatha Hridi (heart) Hastashu (hands) Upatsu (feminine organ) Nabhoucha (navel) Medra (male organ) Adho Bhaga Nalayaha [lower intestines or canals] Buddhisthanay [seat of intelligencej Brahma Danday [the seat of the kala or ray of Bhrama] Pranakosav [the seat of life] Prakasatay [shines or illuminates] Hence cutting off hair from the head, means so much loss of vitality to the body and such times should be selected as would minimise or neutralise the flow of electric currents from those sources. The injunctions are for men, who wish to have, or who possesses abundance of electricity. The police warn the people as guardians of the property to be careful and shut all sources of danger from which thieves might enter their houses and take away their property. But in the case of veritable beggers or mendicants, who have no property to lose, the advise of fhe police looks quite absurd and they many even call the police fools for giving such' warning. But their advice is sound and necessary in the case of rich men. Similarly sciences also will have to be interpreted in their proper spheres. .. Shaving operations and cutting or paring the nails etc. should always be conducted when the subtle influences exercised by the lunar days, constellations, planetatary conjunctions etc. are such as would not act prejudically against the conversation of the godly or spiritual energy in man or in other words when the Satwa Guna (vital energy) is not likely to suffer from these operations, or when the chances of its outflow are minimised. Hence good days must be fixed for such acts. Shaving may be had in the following constellations-(1) Pushyami, (2) Punarvasu, (3) Ravati, (4) Hasta, (5) Sravana, (6) .

Dhanis~a, (7) Mrigasira, (8) Aswini, (9) Chitta, (10) Jaista, (11) Satabhisha and (12) Swathi. Those who take a shave on the 4th of the lunar day court ruin to mother, on the 14th lunar day ruin comes to sister. on the 6th day misery to brothers on Parva days (Amavasva and Poornama) misery comes to father, on the first and 9th days loss occurs to wealth and grain and on this 8th evil befalls on the man's wife. The best week days are Monday; Wednesday and Thursday. Nature's processes are sometimes slow and sometimes sudden and unexpected. Moderation in food, locomotion, sexual matters, rest and mental activity is strongly recommended. Suppose a man can work for six hours a day and will work against this rule for eight hours. Do the irregularities of the system manifest themselves at once or later on and in a slow and impecetible manner. Both are possible. In some the bad results are slow and in others, they are sudden and immediate, So also these ethereal evils so strongly condemned by the Maha Rishis in the vel~y day actions of the human life. .Suppose a man takes a shave on the fourth Lunar day, does his mother die at once? The evils accumulated may manifest themselves under various forms and on various occasions. Therefore conservations of the right. kind of the energy conducive to human health and wealth is recommended by those who possessed Divine Sight.
XiV--Vastu Prakarnam-Building New Houses This is a very important question which should not be neglected by persons who build new houses or who enter into them as their tenants. It often happens that persons who enter certain new houses or who build new houses get into all sorts of misfortunes and miseries and that they open their eyes wide only when it is too late

to mend. Although the causes may be many and mysterious, the facts are t90 frequent and patent that they attract considerable attention and dis?ussions after tJ1e happening of serious evils. Many people who begin to build new houses either die before they are completed or lose their appointments or avocations, or suffer important deaths in their families which make them miserable all through the rest of their lives. So also happens in the cases of many families, who enter into new or ready-made houses as tenants or mortgagees with possession, Some houses get the unenviable title of "haunted houses" and for a number of years or generations, they do a world of mischief both to the owners who build them and to the families who happen to occupy them as tenants. There must be surely be some' 'causes or reasons for all these misfortunes. In some houses the occupants whoever they may be, rapidly rise position and prosperity and go away to better places while in some other houses, the occupants, as rapidly, lose their fortunes and vacate them after being entirely wrecked in life or finances. It becomes therefore extremely' important to consult the nature and influences 'of the houses before they should be built or entered. The laying in of the foundation is an important function and ought to be per!ormed when the stellar zodiacal lunar and planetary conjunctions are favourable and are in a mood of to give success and prosperity to either the builders of those houses or to their occupants. Hence it is that some houses fetch fabulous rents and prices bocause they have a good reputation, while many houses -though excellently built and much better in affording accomodation fetch no rents or prices because they have a bad name or because they are considered to be haunted. Brief directions, therefore, will be given here for the benefit of the readers on this important question

of house-construction and house occupancy. New houses commenced in the lunar month' Chaitra, will produce w'ealth and happiness thereby Vaishakha gives happiness. Jaista produces certain death or destruction Ashadha indicates loss of cows and cattle. Sravana shows prosperity to servants or their increase. Bhadrapada produces constant sickness. Aswija indicates -incessant quarrelling. Kartika gives Much wealth. Margasira indicates serious pecuniary losses. Pushya gives fears from fire while Magha shows increase among children and family. Phalguna produces loss to body or death. New houses built when the sun occupies Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Aquarius, Aries, Libra, Scorpio, and Capricorn us produce children & grand children. When the Sun is in fixed' signs, new houses give much happiness. When he is in moveable signs the results will be ordinary and when he is in common or double bodied signs, the results are unfavourable. I have written very elaborate and convincing articles about these matters in the pages of my Astrological Magazine and those who are anxious to get further information should refer to them. While the modern sciences enumerate positive and negative electricity, the Maha Rishis of India in the unfathomable antiquity enumerated 1800 varities of electrical currents, and 'each of these is capable of further subdivisions to the extent of thousands. All phenomena, is permeated with magnetic cuurrents and if this is a fact then all materials, collected for . building houses will have each its own peculiar currents A co lIection of these may do good or ev'i I. Some are cohesive while others are adhesive or repulsive. When we want cohesion and repulsion sets in we have failure and misery, and when we want repulsi-on. and we get adhesion we get our objects defeated.

Success and failure are determined by the collection of the house materials at the right or wrong time, and it is this invaluable knowledge that the Maha Rishis were able to give to postirity in the shape of Astrological formulas.
New buildings should not be commenced when Jupiter and Venus are in vcornbust. or when they are young or old; nor in the Chaturmasyas-Ashadha, Sravana, Bhadrapada and Aswija nor in the Sunyamasa (Pushya)·.
The following constellations are good for commencing new buildings-(1) Oottara, (2) Oottarashada, (3) Oottarabhadra, (4) Chitta, (5) Rohini, (6) Swati, (7) Jaista, (8) Mrigasira (9) Moola (10) Aswini (11) Hasta (12) Pushyami and (13) Anoradha.
The following should be avoided for commencing house building. The first half of a Parigha, the whole of Vyathipatha and Vvdruti, the first six ghatis of Gahda and Atigandayogas, the first five ghatis of Shulanama yoga and the first nine ghatis of Vyaghata.
The Signs (Lagnas or rising zodiacal houses) for starting to build new houses must not be occupied by benefics or these good planets should be in quadrant or trines possessed of Shadbalas (six sources of strength enumerated in the astrological works) and the 10th house must be specially occupied by Jupiter, Venus

powerful Mercury, while the evil. planets should be found occupying the 3rd 6th and 11 th houses. If Saturn Mars, Rahu, or Kethu occupies the 8th from the Lagna, the proprietor will certainly be killed before the completion of the rouse or very soon after it. If Jupiter or Venus joins powerful Moon in the Lagna and Mercury occupies the 4th or 7th. ths house will not be burnt and will be strorg for a long time and will give prosperity both to the owner and also to any others who may occupy it. XV-Griha Pravesa-Entering New House Entering into new houses, will be a matter of great importance. as the results prodrced bvthe local magne. tic and electrical currents at the time of the entree of the family into it, may lewe upon its members very far reaching influences for 9 »od or bad. There is no mythology or superstition here, All human actions are productive of electical currents, and all of them are produced in turn, and affected by electrical currents. They are based upon solid scientific and adamantine basis of truth and one who neglects to take the light of past experiences in this direction will be throwing away a very valuable weapon by whose help he could have made a very good defence against all powerful evil influences. When the sun is in Oottarayana, in the bright half of the lunar month. on auspicious weekdays, IIIIhen Jupiter and Venus are powerful (without being combust, old or young) after performing Vastu and Bhoota Bali, entering into a new house will be productive of good results. Vasto refers to the form of construction of the house, and the energies or forces called into existencs by the arrangements made and tha materials used in the construction. the conjunction of various materials, though not seen by the naked eye, are still there and any evi I tendencies they may have, to produce danger, disease, or death to the occupants, rnustbe very sensibly and dexterously, neutralised or counteracted. Therefore the astrological works lay down certain principles and they are explained in the Mant.ra Shastra. where the processes by which those evil influences are adverted are detailed at great length. The term Bhootas is generally applied to represent the influences of the earth, fire, water, sky, and air and the various compounds called into existence by their union. When special classes of materials and life beings-including men and cattle--where absent from a particular plot or piece of ground the influnces . of the Bhootas (forces or energies, were naturally working in their own inscrutable ways. But the advent of new forms of enerqies for forces, will certainly have their own influences and if the first set of Maha-Bhoota influences are found to be inimicable to the second set of forces, which are brought upon .them for safety and prosperity, it becomes the duty of inteligent beings like men, to study the first set of physical and spiritual energies with their permanent abode in them, so that second set may not suffer from the "frowns" of the first set, and thus, have the very same object s defeated for gaining which men spend so much money, time and mental labour. Bhoota Bali therefore will be the special sacrifices which are enjoined upon men to offer to the Bhootas (forces) in the new house before they enter into the same and seek safety under its roof. The lunar months of Magha; Phalguna. Vaisakha and Jaista are good for entering new houses. Kartika

and Margasira are indifferent and the rest are bad. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are good. All lunar days except the 4th, 9th 14th and Amavasya. are recommended, and the' entrance may be effected either during the day or during the night. New houses should not be entered in the Shadvargas (six divisions) of the Sun Mars, and the constellations which are occupied by evil planets and which have the aspect of the Sun and Moon. The constellations Rohini Oottara. Oottarashadha and Oottarabhadra are good for entering newly built houses. The constellation Raivati Jaista and Anoradha, are very good for entering one's own old house which has been repaired or previously unoccupied by him. No new or old houses should be entered in Aswini, Hasta, Sravana, and Pushyami. When the Sun is in Kumbha, Mithuna and Kataka, new houses should not be entered into. If new houses are entered in the constellations, Hasta, 'Swati. Pushya, Punarvasu, Aswini, and Sravana, they will pass away from the hands (proprietorship) of the owners, within three years after entree. If they are entered in the other constellations, they meet with danger or death. When good planets are in Kendras, when evil planets are not in Kendras and the 8th house, when the signs of Guru and Sukra are rising, i.e.. in Dhanas, Meena, Vrishabha and Thula, or in fixed signs, and when the Moon is in a favourable place, entree into a new house, will produce. wealth. health, children and long life Even if he builds a house in a forest and enters it under the above auspicious combination of planets and times, he will be surrounded by happiness and prosperity. When the man enters a new house in the same star or Lagna he was born in, Or in the Upachaya constellations or Lagnas from them. he will have children, money and,

enioyment. If a man does not enter into a new house either in his own constellation or Lagna, or those which stand from them as 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11 th (upachayas) then he wi II have sorrow, sickness, poverty, loss of friends and relations, danger or death to children and wife and every conceivable form of misery. No houses should be entered, which have not doors properly fixed, whose roofing is not completed or is defective and where charities and sacrificial rites are not properly performed and the saintly and godfearing people are not feasted. Thease religious details are a real death blow to all those who believe that the Hindus owe their knowledge of Astrology to the Greeks and Chaldeans. Sri Rama the great Indian National Hero shows great skill in Astrology in his arrangement for the invasion of Lanka and the omens he observed on his way. Valmiki gives the horoscope of Rama and others, and shows clear know ledge of Astrology. Mahabharata relates vast stores of Astrological knowledge and as the latter war took place precisely 5047 years ago, I would like to know where the Chaldeans and Greecians were at that time and what was their intellectual erudition. A greater nonsensical theory could hardly be ventured. The details on Astrology Muhurtha, Prasna, and Remedies surpass only conceptions, and when no reference is to be found in the Western Sciences, we have to simply pity their clossal ignorance in these matters.
XVI-Kuparambha or Digging Wells The constellations Raivati, Oottarabhadra, Hasta. Anoradha Makha, Sravana, Rohini and Pushyami are good for digging wells. Meena,. Kataka and Makara Lagnas produce plenty of water.

Kumbha and Vrishaba give half water or insufficient supply, Vrischika, Thula and Mithuna give small quantity, while the rest give very little water or nothing. When the Kendras are occupied by evil planets, even with difficulty, water cannot be secured in the wells. But when. Venus and Moon are in the Kendras, water can be obtained even on the top of a mountain. When wells are begun to be dug in the sign occupied by the Sun, there will be sinking water and rock found in the well. On the other hand if Moon or Venus is in a Kendra, occupying a full watery sign, there will be abundant supply of water in the well. If the Lagnas are watery signs, and they are occupied by Guru, Budha and Chandra, and the 10th house from it is occupied by Sukra, wells and tanks commenced to be dug at such times will contain full water and they will be good ones. Sukra, and Chandra are watery globes and the full watery signs are KatakaCancer Makara, Capricon and Meena-plsces.
XVII-Krishikarma or Agriculture In the world there can be nothing more important 'or valuable than successful agriculture. Even the greatest manufacturing country are entirely dependant on agricultural produce for their existence. The proudest monarch and the humblest subject want food and the story of Midas proves to the world the moral related there by the author. All may turn into gold and even precious gems, but we must have food and this cannot be had without agricultural operations. The Sun's rays falling on watery surfaces convert water into vapour, vapour is condensed by means of cold blasts of wind

and falls down as rain, rain sustains vegitation and animals and they nourish man .. The functions of the solar rays, is very complicated and very mysterious. Without it nothing can grow and nothing can assist even for a second. Will it not be therefore 'Our sacred and responsible duty to find out from the Agricultural Astrology which days, times, stars and conjunctions of planets are the best for agriculture arid when we may hope for a bumber crop. Times have always their indisputable influences and when these are not carefully noted sqricultural, prospects will turn out to be a complete failure and the world will come to a standstill for want of food. In Muhurtha Marthanda, the author Narayana, gives great details about the manner in which the proprietor of a land should begin hia ploughing, This work was composed in 1493 Salivahana Saka or in 1750 A.D. It is one of the most learned works on Muhurtha and the author who was a highly learned Brahmin, has made his own commentaries, thereby showing clearly what he means exactly in 'each sentence. Refer to Misraprakarna or Miscellaneous Chapter, verses, 5 to 7. I shall summarise his views for the benefit of our readers. For commencing ploughing operation the constellations, Raivati, Hasta, Makha, Rohini, Uttara, Ootharashada, Ootharabhadra, Mrigasira, Swati, Shravana, Dhanista, Satabhisha, Punarvasu, Visakha, Jaista, Aswini, Pushyami, Chitta and Abhijit are recommended. Saturday, Wednesday and Tuesday are not good. The Zodiacal signs of Meena, Vrishabha, Mithuna and Kanya are favourable. The lunar days of Amave.sya, 14th and 8th days of the dark half of the lunar month and Navami or the 9the day should be avoided. After a bath in the

morning, worshipping the Earth, Fire, the Sun and the planets waer inqs white clothes, selecting good strong bullocks, and a ploug whose point must be gilt with gold, he should proceed the field and standing opposite the North, drawing a line, and then, turn to the South, draw the second line and then again draw the third, fourth and fifth lines and where no said omen occur, -when the bulls ploughing do not fight with each other, or fall down, the crop will be good and fruitul. XVIII-A.
Sell ing and Buying of cattle
No agriculture can ever be successful without a proper rearing of suitable cattle of various descriptions. Hints are given in this chapter for buying and selling cattle of all sorts. Horses, cows, bulls, buffaloes, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs etc., are the most important tor the cultivators and they gain or lose by trading in them. The Stars, Visaka, Hasta, Mrigasira. Punarvasu, Danishta, Aridra, Aswini, Raivati, Kritika, Shatabhisha .Jaista. Pcobba, Poorvashadha and Poorvabhadra are ·good. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday' are bad. Sirnha Lagna is unfavourable. The Lunar day, Amavasya, Chethurthi. Navami and Chaturdasi are evil. The siqr.s of benefics are good. Vyatipatha, Vaidruti and Ashtarni are favourable. B.
Favourable times for Administering Medicines and Performing Surgical Operations
Whatever our lamentations may be, we are surrounded everywhere by diseaes some of which are horrible in nature and produce great and everenciating pains. Man courts diseases and ill-health by crossing the principles of Natur-e, by excessive indulgences. The

wise men may loudly cry, but human beings are persistent in Courting all sorts of diseases. These diseases are also the results of breeking natural principles and doing things where they ought not to do them. Time, place and circumstances have great influences and a prudent man pays attention to all these and adjusts his actions so well that he hardly suffers any pains at all. But prudent and sensible men are fe"" and far between, and the overwhelming majority are constantly falling victims to the free play of, their passions. For preparing and administering medicines Sunday. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are good. Saturday and Tuesday are unfavourable. The Stars Anuradha, Mrigasira, Baivati, Rohini. Chitta, Oottara, Oottarashadha and Ootarabhadhra, Sravana, Dhanishta, Satabhisha, Punarswasu, Swati, Aswini, Hasta and Abhijit are benificial. Amrityoga is good. Benefics should be in Kendras sixth, eighth and the twelth and the Lagna. For surgical operation and bleeding, the following are recommended in addition to what has already been stated. Lagnas on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday when the planets Sani, Surya and Kuja are in- Kendras are favourable for surgical purposes. Some authors recom mend us planets specially evil ones in the sixth and eighth but others say quite the contrary. It is extremely difficult to say which is correct and which is wrong. I humbly venture to suggest that sixth denoting disease and eighth indicating danger and death would certainly be better without evil planets. XIX-Marriage Adaptability There are twelve Kutas (forces for conjunction and agreement between the couple) named in the original

Sanskrit works, but eight out of these twelve only, seem to furnish a list. wherein, will be found the estimate of good which may result for the marrying couple. They will be named here briefly for reference with their original significations, as far as possible, in theliqht of scientific principles. The Twelve junctional forces which are to be consulted in the marriage are: (1) Dinam, (2) Ganam, (3) Mahendram' (4) Stri Dirgham, (5) Voni, (6) Rasi, (7) Rasyadhipathi or Graha Mitram, (8) Vasya, (9) Rajju, (10) vedha.t tt ) Varna and (12) Nadi. The words ussd here in Sanskrit, seem to have been selected by the Maharishis. who wrote on Astrology, to express the various kinds of agreement. which must be consulted in marriages, to make them, result in giving health, agreement, long life, good progeny, and religious temperament with celibacy and chastity, necessary for all human beeings. There are 36 Gunas or auspicious units, whih should be estimated in the horoscopes of the marrying couple, and if after examining the various sources of energies which furnish these units of good, the total is found to be less than 18, the marriage should never the consummated, as it would result in danger, disagreement or death, to the marrying couple and bring on destruction to the family also. If the units exeed 18 and fall below 27, the horoscopes are passable, and marriage may be celebrated, with ordinary good resul ts for the bride and her groom. But if the number of these units exceeds 27, then it is highly recomended and the marrying couple will have all enjoyments and prosperity in their future marriage career. Thus we have a total of 36 units When a careful analyses of these agreement units are made, it will be seen that all these appear to have reference to the conjunction of magnetic and electrical forces, arising from the constellations, the Moon, the zodiacal signs and the planets, Marriage, among all nations, who have any pretentions to civilizations, becomes a delicate affair, which socially offers great obstacles physicaland intellectual-for a correct examination of the whole history of the marrying couple. There should be no false delicacy in a matter of the greatest importance, like the union of the sexes, for their whole lives. They form units of their home, of their community, of their country, of their nation and of the world as a whole. There can be no village, no family, no town, no municipality, no city, no community, no nation, no continent, and no world, without individuals. The happiness or misery of these individuals is the real unmistakeable basis of the national prosperity or misfortune, and when these backbones of society are broken, neglected, i II set or badly matched, say what you will to the contrary, the whole national fabric, must inevitable go to ruins and destruction. We do not want philosophers. Presidents of Republics, and great doctors to tell us these simple truths. They are within our easiest observations, and we are feeling their pleasures and pains every movement of our lives. A bad wife, sickly child, a deformed husband, a rougish

friend, a rotten official a 'licen~ious officer, a greedy president, Of a fraudulent, 'monarch, are all sources of intolerable miseries which cannot be endured and which certainly dry up the noble springs of love, happiness, safety, prosperity and progress. Marriage therefore is the most important factor in the life of every person, and it become therefore, the greatest, the most sacred and the most important duty of man to try and minimise the chances of evil arising from the marriages, and improve the marital conditions, by doinq which the individual, the community, the society and the nation, may secure peace, happiness progress and morality. To laugh at such sources of real and useful knowledge, would be but betraying more the symptoms of willful idiotcy and blind dogma, than indicating any real traces of unprejudiced and liberal education. XX. Dinam.-Coming to the Kutas (junctions of forces) we have fist Dinam. Take the constellation of the girl, and from it count up to the constellation of the boy and divide the total by nine if the sum is divisable. If the remainder is two, four, six, eight or is good. .Take an illustration, The girl's constellation at the time of birth is Krittika and that of the boy is Ano.radha. If we count from the girl's up to the boy's both inclusive we get 15. This divided by 9 gives a remainder of 6and this is good. But suppose the boy's is Mrigasira; while the girl's is Krittika; counting from the constellation of the girl; we get 3 and this is not recommended. The other figures not named by implication are good.
XXI. Ganam.-Astrologically

works that Deva represents through piety and goodness of character, Manusha a mixture of good and evil and Rakshasa predominance or evil. These different natures amonq mankind are partly indicated by the constellations under which they are born and partly by planetary conjunctions. Where the birth star or time is not known, the constellation for name, as given already in this book must be taken in all these calculatins. Punarvasu, Pushyami, Swati, Hasta. Sravana, Raivathi, Anoradha, Mrigasira and Aswini denote Deva Gana. Rohini, Pubba Poorvashada, Poorvabhadra, Bharani, _ Aridra, Uttara Ootarashada and Oottarabhadra, indicate M anusha Gana. But if a Devata marries a Rakshas, it is worst. If a Manusha marries a Rakshasa, death results as a matter of course. Under no circumstances can a Manu sha or Devatha man should marry a Rakshasa girl. Take an illustration. The girl born in Krittaka belongs to Rakahasa Gana, while the boy born in Anoradhais governed by Devagana. The marriage between the two is prohibited. Take a girl born in Mrigasira. She belongs to Devagana. She can marry one born in Bharini (Manusha) or even in Krittika (Rakshasa). The science seems to indicate that Stri Rakshasa, under no ci rcumstances should be matched to a man born under

Deva or Manusha Ganas. Stri Rakshasa has been greatly condemned, while Purusha Rakshasa may be passable. Rakshasa denotes a bad nature and it is not pleasant to have a quarrelsome and fighting wife for a modest and quiet man. But if both of them are Rakshasas, the marriage must prove ordinary. A loving chaste. obedient and modest wife will be a peculiar fortune in this world and the domestic circle with such a lady will be a Heaven on this Earth. There are many unfortunate families where the wives are debaucherous unsympathetic and repulsive. The men are driven to madness and lead a most miserable life. A good companion in thick and thin is a special fortune and possessed by a small percentage of men. The rascalities of men are equally notorius, and good and innocent wives suffer unheard of miseries from the cruel hands of their unsympathetic husbands. External appearances in marriages will be completely deceived. Nature and temoarament must be good and sexuality must be agreeable. XXII. Mahendra Kuta-If the constellation of the boy is the 4th, 7th 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 22nd or 26th .trom that of the bride, it is goOd'l 'itjlf., ~ 0cIv\.0 __ ~\ .' .... . XXIll. Stri Dirgha-If the star of the boy falls within the first nine constellations counting from that of the girl, it is condemned by astrologers. If it falls within the next 9 stars Of from the 10th to that of the 18th from the star of the girl it is ordinary. But if the star of the boy falls within the last nine (from 19th to 27th)' stars from that of the girl, it is considered as good Where the Rasi and Graha Mitra Kutas are agreeable this may not be taken into consideration at all.

Yoni in Sanskrit means the

~nerallY psychological results follow from physiological conditions. It would be absurd to think that sexually, any man may be matched agreeably to any woman. No greater mistake than this could be cornmitted by parents or guardians who are mostly responsible for the marriages of their daug.hters and sons and the evil results which follow by an ill selected match. Neither do the sexual organs in male or female bear any definite proportion to the bulk, strength or height of the persons concerned. A tallman or woman will have a small organ while a short individual may possess a big sexual orqan, quite disproportionate to his body or bulk. This is beautifully illustrated by nature in its creation. and one has only to watch the disproportions in the sexual organs among the various kinds of animals, compared with their height and bulk. To solve this difficulty to present false etiquette of social life offers really very great obstacles in marriage selections with theconsequence, that many of the marriages proves most miserable and the want of sexual adaptablitv leads to bad and "licentious lives. Take an examplev. A marriage is arranged between a girl and a boy, without reference to the dimensions of their sexes. When the nuptials are about to be consummated the disproportion of sexual union and with this at the bottom, as a strong and irremidiable basis, they are not united in body and much less could they ever hope to be united in her mind. The marriage proves consequently a. thorough failure. They hate each other and the result is that one or the other .or both seek the company of others, with whom they find better sexual gratification. The appalling number of divorces' among the European nations are directly

traceable to these defects. To speak the plain truth may be hateful, or unpalatable to the parties concerned, but this is a matter in which both the parents as well as the parties to be engaged, are entirely silent and which leads them to very pitiable or deplorable situations. This arises from a grand mistake of false delicacy obtained in the social circles. With a view to obviate these important defects, the ancient Rishis seem to have examined this vital question astrologically, -and expressed their ideas under astrological technicalities. Where the Yonicut is (sexual adaptability) inimicable the marriages ought to be avoided. Aswini and Satabhisha represent horses. Bharani and Raivathi show elephants. Krittika and Pushya indicate goats. Rohini Mrigasira denote serpents. Moola and Aridra show dogs. Makha and Poobba. indicate rats. Aslasha and Punarvasu denotes cats. Swati and Hasta show he-buffaloes. Visakha and Chitta represent royal tigers. Jaista and Anoradha indicate deer. Oottara and Oottarabhadra represent cows. Abhijit and Oottarashadha show Mangooses. Poorvabhadra and Dhanista indicate lions. Poorvashada and Sravana denotes monkeys. Where the constellation of a boy indicates the male and the star of the girl shows a female animal or sex, and when these animals are not declared enemies to each other, the marriage is highly recommended, and will produce happiness and success. Where the stars of the boy and the girl, both denote feminine sex there union will be ordinary. Where both 'constellations denote masculine gender,. the union will be productive of unhappiness and pecuniary loss. Take some examples. A man is born in Rohini and this star governs serpents. The girl is born in Oottarashada, and this represent mangooses. There is bitter enmity 'between these two and the marriage would prove hateful.

Suppose the boy's star is Visakha and the girl's is Oottara. The marriage will prove unfortunate as the match will be one between a tiger and a cow. If the boy's star is Aslasha and the girl's is Makha, the marriage is prohibited as it will be between cat and a rat, both being bitter enemies to each other. Suppose the marriage IS between a boy and a girl born in Oottarabhadra. The marriage will be ordinary as both represent feminine gender. Suppose the marriage is between a boy in Swati, and a girl born in Hasta, the marriage will be between masculine genders and it will prove unfortunate and will cause loss of money. So far as the marriages are concerned, there is a serious responsibility, on the public, on the government, on the parents and guardians of the couple to be married and on the astrological experts on whose advice the marriages are chiefly based. No selfish motives should actuate any of the above named, and specially the parents and the astrolqer to undertake a task on which the welfare of the couple, their progeny ahd that of community and country depends. If the astrologer is not competent, he must direct the consultors to some capable and honest men and no false delicacy should be brought into play. A nation can never be stronger than its weakest individuals, as a chain can never be stronger than its weakest link. This is not a light matter and ought not to be treated with any indifference. The whole peace and prosperity of mankind depend upon how they arrange their marriages and the sexual congress among its individual members. Eternal developments of bodies, medical tests and certificates, and . the apparent health of the parties to be married are not the real factors to depend upon for a successful marriage. The visible influences are frequently changed and rnvs-

terious alterations take place. How, why and when can only be determined by the astrological experts, who have real knowledge, consciene. capacity and honesty. If they advice slip shod, they inflict a harm on the married couples which no loss or medicines can cure unheard of miseries result on such evil advices and the consequences are deplorable. A sickly girl recovers health after her marriage. A wealthy boy becomes an .invalid for life after his marriage, and a poor fellow becomes rich afler marriage. When therefore the adaptabilities are not sound, sorrows flow in and make the lives of the mal ried couple miserable and repulsive. Calmly observe the marriage relations, on the different continents, among the different nations and also among the Hindus, compare them without prejudice or passion and draw your own influences. The chastity and obedience insisted on and practiced to a large extent among the rural Indian families, are matters which are generally absent among other countries. This has much to do with training, religion and their valuable and experienced instructions.
xxv. Rasikuta:- The whole. celestial, space is divided into 12 parts each of which technically called a Rasi, Bha, Bhavana etc, The possessions of these houses with reference to each other seem to lend strength or weakness and these sources of agreement or debility are indicated under this heading. The houses here indicated are not those in which the rising signs (Lagnas or birth times) are marked in the horoscopes of the marrying . couple, but those in which the Moon is placed at the time of their birth. Hence technically the house occupied by the Moon is usually called the Janma Rasi. The position of the Moon at the time of birth is determined by.the constellation which controls the person and these

pecularities have been elaborately explained in the Astrological-Self Instructor and Primer published by me. If the Rasi of the boy happens to become the 2nd from that of the girl happens to be the 12th from that of the boy, death will be the result of that marriage. But if, on the other hand, the Rasi of the boy falls in the 12th from the girl or the Rasi of the girl is in the 2nd from that of the boy astrology predicts longevity for the couple. If the Rasi of the boy is the 3rd from that of the girl there wi II be misery and sorrow. But if the Rasi of the girl is the 3rd from that of the boy there will be happiness. If the boy's Rasi falls in the fourth from that of the girl's then there will be great poverty; but if the Rasi of the girl happens to fall in the 4th from the boy there will be great wealth. If the boy's Rasi falls in the 5th from that of the girl's there will be unhappiness. But if the Girl's Rasi falls in the 5th from that of the boy's there will be enjoyment and prosperity. But where the Rasis of the boy and the girl are in the seventh house's mutually, then there will be health, agreement and happiness. If the boy's Rasi falls in the 6th from the girl's there will be the loss to children, but if the girl's is the 6th from the boy's then, the progeny will prosper. But even where misery and danger are indicated by rules above quoted, if the two Rasis are owned by one planet or if the lords of the two houses happens to be great friends, they produce prosperity and the evil indicated by want of Rasikuta need not be considered.
XXVI. Varnakuta-e-varna, in sanskrit means color and the junction here of two Rasis, or signs is considered in the light of its purity and the results it is likely to produce. Meena, Vrischika and Kataka present

purity of color and are called Brahmin Rasis. Varnashrama Dharmas is familiar to us, Brahma Karma and the Dharrnas or principles of conduct organised on Brahmins by the Vedas will give them Brahma Thejas or bright. Kshatreyas have to lay down the-ir lives in the defence of justice. Vaisyas should trade on equitable principals and Sudras should have agriculture. Simha, Dhanas, and Thula are denoted as controlling the Kshatreyas. Mesha; Mithuna and Kumbha represent Vaisyas, land Vrishabha, Kanya and Makara indicates Sudras. A girl born in higher caste ought never to be married to .a boy born in a lower class and if out of love and personal greed or cupidity such a marriage is celebrated the husband dies very early. Take an example. If a boy \ is born in Jaista his Rasi necessarily will be Scorpio or . Vrischika. This represents Brahmin caste. Say a girl is born in Makha. this constitutes Simha Rasi and it represents Kshatrias. The marriage is allowable. But suppose the girl is born in Raivathi (Maena Rasi) and she marries a boy born in Rohini (Vrishabha) it is condemned because the boy belongs to the Sudra Class and the girl belongs to the Brahmin.
XXVII. Vysyakut-This word is Sanskrit signifies possession or subjugation of one by the other and it is consulted for the marrying couple, with a view to see, whether there will be agreeability or rupture and opposition between the persons about to be married. For Mesha-Simha and Vrischika are subordinate. For Vrishabha-Kataka and Thula; for Mithuna -Kanyafor Kataka-Vrischika and Dhanas; for Simha-Thula; for Kanya-Mcena and Mithuna; for Thula-Makara

XXVIII. Graha Maitram-The moon in a horoscope shows the mind of the person, and he is determind by the constellation which rules a person at the time of his birth. The lord of the house where the Moon' is located at the time of the birth of a boy must be a declared friend of the planet, who owns the house occupied by the Moon in the girl's horscope. If those two lords are indifferent, the couple wi II be similarly situated in their mental attitude towards each other and if they happen to be enemies the husband and wife also be enemies. This, Kuta, seems to thoroughly examine the mental conditions which are to be,brought in contact with each other by the sacred bonds of marriage, and in the union of the physical and the intellectual parts of man and woman. A few illustrations are given to explain these facts. On p. 7 & 8 of the Astrological Self-Jnstructcr, 11th Edition by me, planetary friendship etc. is fully given, to which I would refer the readers for full information on this subject. Take an example. A boy has the star Aslasha at his birth and a girl has Pubba. The Moon therefore in, the boy's horoscope falls in Cancer (Kataka) and its owner is Moon himself, while

the Moon in the girl's horoscope is placed in Leo (Simha) and its lord is the Sun. The Sun and Moon are friends and there is Graha Mitra. Take another example. A boy is born in Dhanista in the 2nd-padam. His moon therefore falls in Makara (Capricorn). The girl's star is Makha. Her Moon will be placed in Sirnha (Leo). The Lord of Makara is Sani while the lord of Simha is Ravi. Both these planets (darkness and light) are bitter enemies and the couple marrying will take up hostile positions in their home. and become miserable. Take a third example. The boy' is born in Aridra, and the Maori falls in Mithuna, whose lord is Mercury (Buda). The girl is born in Swati, with Moon in Thula (Libra). Its lord is Venus (Sukra) and the two planets Buda and Sukra are intimate friends. After marriage there will be great love between the couple as the two minds take a favourable view of each other and amalgamate into a harmonious whole.
XXIX. Rajju Kuta-This denotes strength of the thread of the married life and it is important to test its durability by consulting the RaJju the cord binding the marital time. Aswini, Aslasha, Makha, .Jaista, Moola, and Raivathi, constitute what.is technically called Pada Rajju. Bharani, Pushya, Poobha, Anoradha, Poorvashada and Oottarabhadra, denote Kati Rajju, Krithika, Punarvasu, Oottara, Visakha. Oottarshadha and Poorvabhadra indicate Oodara Rajju. Swati Sravana Rohini, Aridra, Hastaand Satabhisha compose Kanta Rajju. Dhanista, Chitta, and Mrigasira constitute Siro Rajju. In Sanskrit Pada means foot. Kati indicates waist. Oodara shows stomach. Kanta means neck and Sira denotes head. If both the stars of the boy and the girl fall in Sir a. the husband, will die, if both of (hem

fall in Kanta the girl will die, if both of them fall in Oodara, their progeny will die; if both of them fall in Kati they will suffer great poverty, and if both of them fall in Pad a, they will be compelled to lead a wandering life. The Rajju must be Bhinna or separate and must not be the same.
XXX. Vedha Kuta-Vetha in sanskrit means trouble or disturbance and it may have also some other peculiar signifcance. The eighteenth constellatation from Aswini, Makha and Moola, the sixteenth star from Bharan i, Pubba and Poorvashadha; the 14th costellation from Kithika, Oottara, and Oottarashadha. and the 12th from Rohini, Hasta, and Sravana must be considered as . those which are within the influence of Vedha Kuta. Dhanista Mrigasira and Chitta form Vedhas to each other. If marriages are performed when this evil influence prevails, the husband soon embraces. Friendship arid enmity are not always. traceable to actual facts of relationship. A father may be uniformly loving his son but the latter may as uniformly be hating his father. A may be doing harm to B, but both may be on friendly terms if personal magnetic currents are attractive and cohesive A may doing good to B, and still both may be enemies. Planets at birth indicate who will be our friends and who will be enemies. Dasas and Vidasas exercise great magnetic infl uences in their respective periods and may become attractive or repulsive. Marriage can never end in peace and prosperity when the couple are enemies and repel each other. And if they are compelled to live together under leagal or social or religious restraints their lives Will be miserable, unsympathetic and undesirable. Those who are concerned in arranging marriages should spare no paints to make them as harmonious and as agreeable as sciences could help
· THE ASTROLOGICAL MIRROR us to do. The question of marriage is a question of fife long misery or happiness not only to the couple but also to their progeny. relations and friends. Nadi-Kuta.-We. now come to the most powerful of these Kutas called the Nadi. In Sanskrit Nadi means several things, but the most important and pertinent to our present subject, signifies the pulse or centre of nervous energy which indicates health and temperament of the person. There are three kinds of pulses enume rated in the medical works among the Hindus and these are Vatha, Pittha and sleshma, which may be roughly translated into windy, bilious, (hot) and phlegmatic temperaments. A union in sexes means much more than what man generally understands. A male or female actuated by simple sensual gratification, seeks the company of the opposite sex, and in that excited moment ,forgets what serious consequences are involved in that sex-correspondence and how miserable their future lives may become by such indiscretions. If only external physical forms attract men and woman towards each' other in this sacred act of reproduction, than they will be thoroughly deceived in their future careers, not only in mental, disagreements arising among themselves, but also by suffering in health, length of life, pecuniary prospects, and the chi Idren they produce as a matter of fact from such c:Iisagreeable unions. Their temperaments, and their internal magnetic currents must agree to make them happy and to produce healthy and long Jived children. When marriage is not seriously considered as religious and indissolvable, probably the couple will be advised or controlled by their elders to keep their temperaments smooth till the consurnation of the marriage is over, and then when they come to live as husband and wife, they begin to show that nasty

temperaments. which is their real characteristic. and which could have been real in the light of planetary influences before the celebration of the marriage if only consultations in their horscope had been made by competent men. If minds agree. labour or pain becomes one of love, and where they disagree love becomes painful and laborious. With a view to solve these difficulties. the ancient Maharishis. laid down elaborate astrological principles in the selection of brides and bridegrooms. so that when they are actually married . they may not only have all the necessary physical agreements and comforts but they may also possesswhat is of the highest value in this world-mental and spiritual agreement. By careful! selection and agree~ ability. according to the astrological rules. the couple may live happily. healthily and comfortably amidst good werldly surroundings and reliqious aspirations. These Rishis have not treated the subject of marriage as acivil contract, where the man or woman may divorce each other, after their first bestial lust has been gratified. where no religious significance need be searched or found where external form and animal gratification alone form the summum bonum of married life and existence and where chastity is held at a considerable discount. In the coupling and amalgamation of these temperaments, they have laid down some principles which, on examination seem to be sensible and actuated by economic, social. religious and prudential considerations. Count the : constellations of the intended couple from Aswini. by threes, forwards and backwads. If 'the constellations of the coupe fall on one or the other side' they produce indifference in temperament, If they fall on the middle line, they produce great misery and disagreement often resulting in ruin and death. But if the two constellations fall in different lines the agreement will be good and will

be productive of 'happiness and good children. Take a few illustrations. A boy born in Aslasha wants to marry a girl born in Moola. The counting should be as follows:Aswini Aridra

In this we see that from Aswmi we go forwards. and from Rohini back-wards. Again from Punarvasu the counting. goes forwards and from Makha it goes backwards and so on to the end. The boy is born ip Aslasha and it falls in the last of the 3rd line. The girl is born in Moola, and this is the first in the 7t.h line. A boy born in Pubba,cannot and ought not to marry a girl born in Anoradha as both of them fall on the middle line and this constitutes Madhyaka Nadi (or both b.ilious temperaments) which produces misery and ruin. A boy born in Visakha marries a girl born in Sravana, This will be Parsweke (on one side of the 3rd division) and this will not yield good fruit. If the boy and the girl have one Rasi with different constellations or one constellation with different Rasis' Nadi and Gana Kutas need not be examined cr even if they are found to be unfavourale, their evil is counteracted by the good produced by the above conditions named.

A boy born in Aswini and a girl born in Bharani, will both have their Chundra placed in Mesha and therefore they have ur.itv in Rasi while they differ in Nakshatras. But suppose both the boy and the girl are born in krittika. Here by the difference of quarters of padams, in the star they show a difference of Rasi. If both of them are born in the first quarter of Krittika, their Rasi will be Mesha. but if the boy is born in the ,2nd padam of Krittika while the girl is born in the 1st padam of that star, then the Moon of the girl will be in Mesha.' while the Moon of the boy will be placed in Vrishabha. This is reccmmended.

Then we must find such auspicious times, as would by their peculiar planetary conjunctional forces, mrrumise the evils or avert them altogether.. The Astrological Mirror, now published by me does the last work and therefore will be found very useful one beneficial to persons in their every day transactions. All evils arising from bed lunar, solar and planetary infulences can be modified or set at nought by good planetary conjunction, .and powerful beneficial aspects but if the planetary conjunctions are bad the good arising from other sources, cannot adequately compensate them. Thus it will be seen that in the whole of the astrological consultations a good astrologer must have special regard for planets and he must try to gain by the knowledge of the planetary positions and conjunctions, heavy advantages as against any evils which other influences might indicate in the transaction of important events like marriage, longevity, children. The following positions of planets may be specially remembered in commencing all good work. Beneficial . planets, Jupiter. Venus, good Mercury and full Moon, in quadrants. and trines are excellent. But in Marriages even they ought not to be in the 7th from the rising sign fixed for marriages. Evil planets, the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Kethu, with, week Moon and badly associated Mercury may be conveniently placed in the 3rd, 6th and 11 th houses. When they are there they confer great enjoyment. prosperity and long life. All planets, good or bad, placed in the 11 th house will yield good results. Jupiter and Venus in the rising 'sign indicate success and happiness. As no Lagna, free from all blemishes named in the astrological sciences, can be secured, even if we wait for years together eminent astrologers strong Iy recommend, a preponderance of 'c ,

good over that of evil at the time of doing good and useful work, I shalt state a few more hints for ordinary work, which admits of no delay, and for which men must be ever ready. Suppose a superior officer issues an urgent order to a subordinate to start at once on a travelling business. Surely the latter cannot count his evil lunar days, planets, constellations and postpone the journey because it happens to be an Amavasya or a Bharani or Krittika or Sankramana . . Similar contigencies in all human affairs may be easily conceived. Then it may fairly be asked by students, "what shall we do" under such circumstances. The orders of superiors or the urgency of the cases may admit of no delay even of few hours while the days and constellations show positive evil. Shall we obey our superiors, or planets? Here "the Rishis who were able to view the past, present and future at one glance with their Divya Dristi, have' laid down very convenient rules, a knowledge of which will enable men to suit themselves to all conditions and exigencies of life and its multifarious duties. On page 23 of the Astrological Self-Instructor (12th Ed) I have clearly stated the origin of the week days and the planets who govern the 24 hours of each of the weekdays. Take Sunday and the 24 hours it contains, namely from sunrise on Sunday to sunrise on Monday---the following planets govern them consecutively: (1) Sun, (2) Venus (3) Mercury, (4) Moon, (5) Saturn, (6) Jupiter, (7) Mars, (8) Sun, (9) Venus, (10) Mercury, (11) Moon, (12) Saturn, (13) Jupiter, (14) Mars, (15) Sun, (16) Venus, (17) Mercury, (18) Moon, (19) Saturn, (20) Jupiter, (21) Mars, (22) Sun, (23) Venus and (24) Mercury.

Carefully remembering this, suppose an urgent order to start for a place is given on Sunday (Amavasya or new moon day) at about 100' clock in the morning. Suppose also the constellation of the day is Bharani a prohibited one for journeys, etc. By referring to "the list above given it is seen that Moon governs that day the hour from 9 to 10 a.m. The next hour, i.e. from 10 to 11 a.m. is governed by Saturn a malicious planet. The man can conveniently wait till it is passed 11 o' clock and then start on his work during the hour governed by Jupiter. who greatly minimises the evils which are otherwise indicated by lunar and stellar influences. Besides after 11 -40, we begin to have the Abhijit Lagna and it is good for commencing all sorts of work. Take a practical example. Say a man is transferred from a healthy to an unhealthy place by government and they insist upon his going at once or the choice of a dismissal for disobedience, In this struggle for existence, he must go. Suppose that the government would send him to jail if he disobeyed the orders. What could he do? The doctor says it is unhealthy and the man may get malaria and die from its effects or his fami Iy members may suffer. But he dare not disobey. As a wise or prudent man, he will consult the best medical authorities introduce changes in his diet. and dress, and try to minimise the chances of malarial attacks as far as possible on himself and his family. If we get a wicked horse and we are compelled, by circumstances, to ride it, prudence dictates that we must take all precautions to minimise the chances of fall from that animal, and

use it as best as we could. A man posted to the hottest part of a country, cannot command the sun to shed less of his heat but he can certainly devisemeans to mitigate its evi I effects on him. If we carefully consult the best books on astroloqv in this department of Muhurta we find invariably texts therein given. first to ascertain the extent of evil; secondly to find out the lenglh and intensity of its duration and lastly to adopt such remedial measures as would materially take away its sting for bad and mitigate undesirable influences as far as possible. The most approved works on Muhurta show the-depth of the wisdom and foresight of the ancient Maharishis in prescribing rules for guidance of mankind and for the alleviation of the evil results at every turn, according to the nature, convenience and inclination of the parties concerned. Bearing this in mind, will it be considered stupid or rediculous on the part of any man, who is transferred to an unhealthy place, to consult and take the best medical instructions and avert the evil results arising from the foul climate as far as he can. Similarly can it be said that a man who receives orders to proceed on duty on an Amavasya or Sankramana day, when the evil constellation Bharani or Krithika rules, to go to an expert astrologer, explain his circumstances to him. and get such auspicious time for starting, as would be considered the be~t on that day. If a man is compelled by environments to drink dirty water full of germs, breeding disease, instead of dying with thirst, or waiting to die till good water is brouqht from a long distance, could he not, as a same man, try to get the dirty water boiled and filtered and drink it mixed with such chemical

There is no stupidity here, no superstition and no disobeying the duty in adopting these devices. The majority of ordinary lives are not under strict military orders, where the work of the commander, must be instantaneously obeyed and where a few hours are not allotted to begin their work. Even under the most urgent military orders there will be some hour or at least some minutes allowed for preparation and also to select the best hour or the best minute for marching on their errands. All day is not bad even when it happens to be an Amavasya. As the solar heat is never stationary but ever changing with the movement of the Sun in his revolutions through space, so also are the, evil and good movements changing their turns to curse and to bless the people who under take their work under their invisible but certain influences. Guna Bahulyam and Doshawalpam or the mottos of the Sanskrit astrological writers, and these two expressions mean that in the Lagnas we fix for all good work let evil influences be as few as possible, and good influences as many and powerful as we can arrange to have. As the marital state affects all persons throughout their entire lives, it would not be surely waste of time, if I gave here some more combinations which would negative the evils arising from bad days, times, planets and constellations selected for marriage purposes. (1) If Venus occupies Kendras he is said to be powerful enough to counteract five thousand evil influences. (2) If Mercury occupies Kendras he will be able to counteract five hundred evil influences, and if Jupiter

occupies Kendras, he will be able to neutralise the evils arising from one hundred thousand sources. (3) If Guru occupies the marriage Lagna - the rising sign at time of marriage-he will be able to clear influences arising from bad zodiacal signs, from evil zodiacal divisions, from the occupation or aspect of malefics and from all other sources, be they what they may be. In this connection I have to warn the readers from committing eggregious blunders from a general statement like this. Guru himself is not strong uniformally in every house. Suppose the marriage Lagna is fixed in Kataka, and Guru is found located there Again take the marriage Lagna fixed in Makara and guru combines in it. The student may ask, will Guru in both these Lagnas, Kataka and Makara, be able to produce the same good results or will there be any differences in them? Any tiro will tell us, that he will not and cannot give the same results. In Kataka he is exalted, and is therefore most powerful to do good. In Makara he is debilitated and will be able to modify the evil results only to a small extent. Similarly suppose Guru is aspected by Sani and Kuja in one case, and Sukra and Buda in another, certainly the results he produces will be different and will vary according to his own strength as well as the strength of the planets who aspect or combine with him. But what the astrological writers mean is that the presence of Guru in the rising . sign is very good and tends to modify evil always where ever that may be. Sources of strength of planets stars, signs and lunar days must be taken into consideration. (4) If Guru. Sukra and Buda, not in combust (Asta) with the sun, occupying their own or beneficial subdivisions, are found combined in Lagna, Kendras or

Thrikonas, they will counteract all evil influences arising from other sources. (5) If powerful Chandra occupies the 11 th house from the marriage sign, he will be able to cancel all evils arising from bad time, bad Lagna, bad planets. bad zodiacal divisiors and bad or evil aspects. If powerful Ravi occupies the 11 th house from that of the sign fixed for the marriage, he will remove all evils arising from bad week days, signs, planets, constellations and zodiacal subdivisions. as he removes-the dreadful darkness enveloping the werld when he rises in all his glory. Sun shine dispels always darkness. (6) If Guru or Sukra occupies anyone of the Kenres. and if the malefics occupy the 3rd, 6th and 11 th houses all evil influences arising from bad lunar days, zodiacal signs, weekdays, constellations and yogas, will be thoroughly counteracted and the marriage celebrated under such 'conjunctions will prove happy and successful.
(7) Planets have peculiar rays in the creation, protection and destruction of terrestrial phenomena; and where they are in imicably placed by ignorance, or stupidity in any houses, they introduce their injurious results in no unmistakable manner and make the parties concerned suffer from their evil influences. If the Sun occupies the marriage Lagna, he will make the girl a widow. If Moon occupies the rising sign he will kill the girl herself with great affection. If Mars occupies it, he will destroy both the husband and the wife. If Mercury occupies it he gives wealth. If Jupiter or Venus combines in it, he gives longevity to the couple and makes them happy and contented. If Saturn joins the Lagna he makes the couple poor and miserable. If

Rahu occupies the Lagna, the' progeny of the married couple will suffer. If powerful Moon occupies 2nd, 3rd 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th or 11 th from the marriage Lagna, he will give sons, enjoyment, happiness and success to the marrying couple. (8) If benefics occupy 4th, 5th, 2nd or 9th or Lagna Moon is found in the Znd, and malefics occupy 3rd, 6th and 11 th houses, and if there are no planets in the 7th and if Venus does not occupy the 6th and Mars the 8th house, and the fixed Lagna for marriage does not happen to be the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Lagna or the Moon at the time of the birth of the couple, the marriage is highly recommended. Mars in the 8th produces death. Venus in the 6th produces veneral complaints. I shall now give some special combinations of planets highly recommended for marriages by the ancient Rishis. (1) If Saturn occupies 11 th; the Sun in the 6th Venus or Jupiter in the Lagna, Mars in the 3rd, Moon in the 10th and Venus in the 8th, marriage under such lcomblnations produces children and grand children, and ; the couple will be happy, prosperous and long lived. (2) If Guru occupies Lagna, Kuja combines in the 11 th and Ravi joins the 10th, this combination is technically called Umasankarayoga and is productive of favourable results to the marrying couple. (3) If Kuja Sukra, Guru and Ravi are found in the Apoklibas from the marriage Lagna, the conjunction goes under the name of Rama Vishnuyoga and is conducive to health happiness and prosperity.

I have very often explained at considerable length, the effects of the Lunar and Solar Eclipses upon mankind. In the case of the Solar Eclipses there will be a great deal of human vitality affected, while in the case of the Lunar Eclipses the mental conditions of mankind will be gravely affected. With a view to avoid those unpleasant resu Its the Ancient Rishis have ordained that no marriages should be performed for three days preceding and succeeding partial eclipses or eclipses which occur during the Sandhikala. or both backwards twilights, or early morning and in the evening and for seven days and forwards from the day on which a complete eclipse takes place. When there are two eclipses. one of the Moon and another ot the Sun, within a fortnight, the interevening days ought to be carefully avoided for marriage or other good purposes. The eldest born in Sanskrit is called Jaista, there is a constellation by this name and the 3rd Lunar month by the fact of its full moon day being combined by this constellation is also called Jaista. In marriages there should be no three Jaistas brought together and any number more than three will be subversive of all happiness, agreement and longevity. The eldest son of a person is called his Jaista Putra and as also the eldest daughter of a man is called Jaista Putri. If they are coupled together we get two .Jaistas combined. Suppose one of them is born in the constellation of Jaista, then if they are married we shall have three Jaistas combined This is objectionable. But if both the girl and boy are born in Jaista, and both of them are the eldest of their parents then we shall have four Jaistas. But suppose their marriage day selected in the lunar month of Jaista. Then we shall have five Jaistas jon ed together, which is highly objectionable. But if the constellation selected

Some astrological writers say that in the marriage work if a shadowy planet like Rahu or kethu occupies the 7th. there is no harm. But concensus of real opinion in astrology clearly shows that their should be nobody in the 7th house and that if it is kept clean the marrying couple would gain immensely by such combinations in averting evil and courting good. There are certain girls who indicate by their birth constellations ruin beforehand either to the husband himself or to his mother or father or elder or younger brother, A girl born under the influence of Moola at birth will surely cause destruction to her father-in-law. i.e., the father of her husband. A bride born under the star Alasha causes destruction to her mother-in-law, an event now-a-days so much liked by the liberty loving daughters-in-law. A girl born in .Jaista, will destroy her husband's elder brother. and one who is born under the star Visakha, will cause ruin to her husband's younger brother. But there are some exceptions taken to these. If the girl is born within the first 3 Quarters of Visakha she is not objectionable. If the girl is governed by the last quarter of Moola, she becomes acceptable so also any girl who is born in the 2nd padam of Aslasha. The last quarters of Aslasha and Visakha are condemned. A few suggestions offered here, as the result of my deep knowledge in and practical experience of Astrology may be found to be invaluable to many beginners in Astrological Sciences. (1) Whenev'er a girl is proposed for a marriage, get . her also called time of birth, and any copy of the heros-

(2) If in the horoscope of the girl you H'nd Saturn and Mars powerfully occupying the 7th and 8th houses, without any beneficial aspects or conjunctions, then, you may reject it as one, who has a tendency to become an early widow. ) (3) Take the horoscope of the boy and see if the 7th house is well occupied and that Sukra is not in conjunction with strong malefics like Mars, Rahu, Saturn rand Kethu. If Sukra occupies the double-bodied signs-Dhanas Meena, Mithuna and kanya, and has powerful evil conjunctions it is very likely the boy will lose one or twowlves early in life and where there is nothing to counterbalance this evil in the horoscope of the girl, try to avoid the marriage with that boy as he is sure to destroy his wife or make her always sick.
