1 INTRODUCTION Astrology may in many respects be viewed as the spiritual genome of the human consciousness similar to the physical genome which has been coded from the information within the double helix of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) which lies at the root of the cellular structure and contains the information necessary for Nature to evolve a separate and unique organism in accordance with the chemical sequences encoded on its strands. The complex diversity of human consciousness as expressed in the art of Astrology is the result of many millennia of careful and dedicated study by the practitioners of this art. Within this vast matrix of information, the individual can discover and reveal aspects of their consciousness that remain dormant or unrecognized and thus advance their evolutionary development. As an example, the ancient Mayans developed their comprehensive astrology from the study of the personality and temperament of hundreds of thousands of persons born into their society and corresponding them to the time and season of the year as well as to the positions of the planets in the heavens on their day of birth. From this vast undertaking emerged an encyclopedic knowledge of the variations in human character and temperament which formed the basis of an astrological methodology which ordered their society and brought it in harmony with the astrological influences that influenced the life of the individual. While not ignoring the relationship between the individual and the Universe, modern astrologers tend to focus on the psychological expression of the Planets and Signs within the various areas of human experience represented by the Houses. This viewpoint implements astrology as a tool for human development through which an individual can realize their highest human potential and fully actualize their inner creative abilities. Through the understanding of the “blueprint” of the Natal Chart as a map of the spiritual expression of consciousness within an individual life, a human being may proceed with greater confidence, ability and insight upon the journey that comprises their natural life. This is the aim and focus of Spiritual Astrology – to empower the human individual with the tools necessary to attain the highest level of self development possible within the context of their individual life and circumstances. This approach to the application of astrology will form the context of this work with the Natal Chart as its principal center of expression. The erection of the chart will be discussed and illustrated so that any individual who is willing to invest the necessary effort will be able to erect and inter-

2 pret their own Natal chart. Every effort has been made to achieve both clarity and intelligibility in the presentation of this method of astrological interpretation. Numerous charts are used for illustrative purposes in e very context where the goal of clear understanding will be served. Every concept is explained in sufficient detail to foster this authentic understanding and no prior knowledge of Natal Chart erection or astrological interpretation is presumed on the part of the reader. The spiritual view is that all of creation and evolution occur within the Cosmic Consciousness in accordance with the Divine Plan. Spirit pervades all of the creation by extending itself invisibly into stars, planets, and living organisms. Evolution is the process by which Spirit creates opportunities for learning and spiritual growth that are graduated to various levels of evolutionary consciousness. This work does not present Astrology as a solution to all the concerns of life but rather as an effective tool of living life in the most meaningful way possible. This work also employs an interactive design which allows you, the reader, ample space for notes and the ability to construct your personal astrological profile one step at a time, much like constructing a house from the foundation upwards to the roof. Through this work, may you come to know your Inner Lights and follow them as your guides.

3 The Purpose of this Book To quote William Shakespeare, “Art, as it were, holds up a mirror to Nature.” This quotation summarizes the purpose of this book: To teach any individual the basic knowledge of the astrological art that will allow him or her to erect, interpret and understand their Natal Chart. This work aspires to make a contribution to human spiritual development, hence its name “Modern Spiritual Astrology”. It aims to accomplish this goal through a comprehensive exposition of astrological principals and techniques which will allow a sincere individual to gaze into “the mirror of consciousness” and come to terms with their inner spiritual nature, thus gaining the chance to improve the quality of their life through refining their existing strengths and working to minimize the effects of their weaknesses. It essentially allows you to view your reflection in the “astrological mirror”, consider what is reflected there, and then do with it what you wish in accordance with your “free will”. You may use Astrology to enhance your strengths, work on your weaknesses or you may ignore its insights altogether and go your own way. A Brief History of Astrology In ancient times, a Chaldean Astrologer, when questioned by the Roman emperor Julian as to the age of his art, replied that it was over 5000 years old. According to this anecdotal historical statement, the origins of the astrological art are rooted in prehistory. However, modern historical scholarship places the origins of astrology in the second or third millennium B.C.E. pointing to its point of origin as being in either Egypt or Mesopotamia. The origins of the astrological doctrine and method that would later develop in Europe and the Middle East are found among the ancient Babylonians and their system of celestial omens that began to be compiled around the middle of the 2nd millennium BCE. This system of celestial omens later spread either directly or indirectly through the Babylonians and Assyrians to other areas such as India, the Middle East and Greece where they merged with the then existing forms of astrology. From this melting pot of ideas emerged the life and work of Claudius Ptolemy, the father of Hellenic Astrology, whose work formed the basis of the astrological method of the Greco - Roman civilization until the fall of Rome. During the so called “dark ages” the ancient concepts were imported into the expanding Islamic world whose thirst for knowledge and meticulous scholarship greatly advanced the astrological art. When Europe finally emerged from the Dark Ages, Islamic texts were imported into the

4 reemerging European civilization and translated into Latin thus laying the foundation for medieval astrology. This astrology carried through into the Renaissance. During the Renaissance, a form of "scientific astrology" evolved in which court astrologers would compliment their use of horoscopes with emerging discoveries about the nature of the universe. After a brief period of decline, Astrology reemerged in Elizabethan age and reaches us today chiefly due to the work of the great English astrologer, William Lilly, who utilized the astrological techniques of the ancients and passed them forward to us in his monumental work “Christian Astrology”. In the modern age in which we now live Astrology was used by such notable people as Dr. Carl Gustav Jung, who often consulted the patients Natal Chart as an aspect of his psychiatric practice as he believed in astrology's descrip tive powers regarding the psyche’s spiritual tendencies without necessarily subscribing to its predictive claims of being able to establish accurate factual information concerning future events. In music the best known example of astrology's influence is in the orchestral suite called "The Planets" by the British composer Gustav Holst, the framework of which is based upon the astrological symbolism of the planets. Many prominent thinkers, philosophers and scientists such as Galen, Paracelsus, Giordano Cardan, Nicolaus Copernicus, Taqi al- Din, Tycho Brahe, Galileo and Johannes Kepler also practiced or significantly contributed to astrology. Some recent Western developments in modern astrology include Cosmobiology, Psychological Astrology, Sun Sign astrology and the Hamburg School of Uranian Astrology. Unde rlying Principals Astrology is a symbolic art. The symbols of the Planets and Signs which are central to this language do not imply any direct action on the part of physical planetary bodies of the solar system on the life of the individual but are used to express the essential character of the principals and energies inherent in life as perceived from the astrological perspective. In this methodology, the seven sacred planets of the ancients (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) do not refer to the physical bodies of our solar system but are symbolic representations of the seven aspects of the Life Power manifested as Consciousness (the planets) and the manifestation of these powers in the natural universe (the Signs). The Houses represent the organization of the activities which comprise human life into loose categories which, when taken as a whole, comprise the entire sphere of human experience from birth to death. As an example,

5 if Mars in your chart is residing in Scorpio in the 7 House this could be expressed as Mars (the aggressive natural energy) acting in a manner characteristic of Scorpio (intense, passionate and emotional) in the 7 th House (the House of Relationships, which encompasses marriage and close personal relationships.) This method of Astrology, in accord with the ancients, considers only the seven sacred planets acting in their Elements and Modes, the Ascendant and the twelve signs of the Zodiac and the two Lunar Nodes. The outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto), which were added by Western astrologers after their discovery by astronomers, as well as the various asteroids and comets which enter our Solar System, are not considered within the context of this modernized view of the ancient astrological methodology. th

The Planets The Primal Will differentiated itself into seven active sentient energies which, from the point of view of this methodology, represent the progenitor powers underlying and acting in all creation. The activity of these energies are reflected symbolically as the seven planets which, when taken as a whole, comprise the symbolic representation of the principal of consciousness as manifested in the human being. A planet (aspect of consciousness) is perceived as being influenced or “colored” by the energy of the Sign (natural energy) in which it resides and acts upon the House (area of experience) in which it is resident. The Signs Each aspect of the Life power manifests itself in two characteristic ways in accordance with the law of duality which underlies the Universe. These two manifestations are the “day” and “night” thrones or domiciles (“homes”) of the planets i.e., the two qualities of expression that are most characteristic of their energy. To return to our previous example of the planet Mars, this planet has two domiciles, that of Aries and that of Scorpio, which are the day and night, or masculine and feminine, expressions of its activity in Nature and in ourselves. The two exceptions to this are the Sun and the Moon which have only one domicile (“home”) as they express the primal essences, the Masculine and the Feminine. These characteristic “colors” of expression by the domiciles of the planets are further individualized by the Elemental character and Mode of the particular Sign, a subject that will be covered in more detail in a subsequent chapter.

6 The Houses The Houses represent the organization of the activities which comprise human life into loose categories which, when taken as a whole, comprise the entire sphere of human experience from birth to death. They are essentially experience solidified into cohesive and logical groupings so the areas of life in which the planetary powers find their principa l focus can be clearly perceived and understood. The Astrological Life You may conceive of the Zodiac as the circle of life, around which the individual is destined to travel from the time they enter the natural world in birth until their departure in physical death. By living through the experiences of the 12 Houses we come into contact with the spiritual and natural energies represented by the Planets and the Signs. Through the study of astrology we develop an awareness of our relationship with the Universe from which emerges a vision of our purpose for living within it. This also leads to a closer relationship with the spiritual and natural aspects of ourselves through which we can attain harmony and balance as we begin to acknowledge the fundamental unity between ourselves and all creation. It is important to remember that the information presented to you in this work is the astrological interpretation of the placements of the Planets in the Signs and Houses of your Natal Chart. It is not meant to be a literal and factual representation of your personality and experience. It is up to you to experience and study this information and to determine what resonance it has to your actual self and experience. Through a harmonization of this information with your actual experience you will be presented with the opportunity for spiritual growth as an individual through the integration of the insights that astrology provides. As in all aspects of life, it is up to you to utilize this information to your best advantage so that you may attain a more fulfilled and meaningful life as you travel on your journey through this world on a path that hopefully will be filled with good fortune and success. What You Will Gain From the study of this methodology and the analysis and interpretation of your Natal Chart you will gain: 1) A knowledge of the principal areas of focus for the energies of your consciousness according to astrology. 2) The most significant areas of your life when taken as a whole – according to an astrological interpretation of your chart.

7 3) A meaningful insight into your individual self according to the principals of Astrology.

Simplified Natal Chart

8 The Natal Chart At the heart of astrological practice lies the Natal Chart, an exact image of the heavens drawn up for your time of birth at the specific date and place of your entry into the world. It is as though a “snapshot’ was taken of the heavens looking directly upward at the exact time and location of your birth. The example chart above will serve as the basis for this discussion of the Natal Chart, its primary elements and their interrelationship with each other. The Natal Chart is erected in the form of a circle which is divided into twelve equal areas of exactly 30 Degrees (30°) apiece (12 x 30° = 360° = the total number of degrees in a circle). Each 30° area is assigned to a Sign/House combination determined by the actual birth information of the individual for whom the chart is drawn up. The planets are resident in these Sign/House combinations depending upon their position at the time of the individual’s birth. The inner ring displays a series of numbers from 1 to 12 in a counterc lockwise direction. These represent the Houses (areas of life experience) that were previously discussed. In the middle ring reside the planets according to their position in the Zodiac at the time and place of birth. On the outer ring are inscribed the signs of the Zodiac also according to their astrological position viewed from the time, date and place of birth. Using the chart on the previous page as an example we are going to pursue an examination of its structure and symbolism so as to attain a total clarity and understanding before you obtain your own chart. The chart is constructed upon a model of three concentric rings. In the innermost ring are inscribed a series of numbers from 1 to 12 reading in a counterclockwise direction. These numbers identify the various Houses of Astrology which deal with the various aspects of human experience in the natural world. In the second ring there is also a twelvefold division into wedge shaped sections somewhat like a pie that has been sectioned for serving. This ring is inhabited by the planets or the energies of consciousness which act within the various houses. In the final ring reside the Signs of the Zodiac which are read counterclockwise from the 1st House, which is commonly called the Sign of the Ascendant, as it is the Sign rising in the east at the moment of your birth. Obtaining Your Own Natal Chart The foundation of astrological analysis is the Natal Chart. Here will be discussed the various options available to help you attain an accurate Natal Chart from which you can paint your astrological portrait. Below are discussed the options which are available to you so as to enable

9 you to make an informed choice as to obtaining your Chart: 1) You can draw up your chart from scratch. This method is not for the fainthearted as it involves lengthy and complex mathematical calculations and detailed research to determine the correct positions of the planets with respect to the local time and the longitude and latitude of your birthplace. This was the method of the ancients and of astrologers before the advent of modern computers and software. 2) You may purchase a specialized software program for your computer which will allow you to erect your Natal Chart as well as those of other people if you are inclined to learn and practice astrology. As another option, you can obtain a copy of your chart from an online service or a local astrologer. The Internet offers thousands of sources from which you can obtain your chart, but before you do so please make sure that you completely understand the following information. There are two major factors that you must take into consideration before you obtain a copy of your Natal Chart. The first is the type of Zodiac being employed and the second is the choice of the House System used by whoever provides your chart. Both of these choices are extremely important so these two elements will be explained in some detail so that you can make an informed decision. The first factor that must be considered is your choice of the type of Zodiac which is being employed in the construction of your Natal Chart. There two types of Zodiac in common usage in the construction of Natal charts: The Tropical Zodiac and the Sidereal Zodiac. The important difference between them is that the Tropical Zodiac is oriented towards the seasons of Nature while the Sidereal zodiac is orientated towards the positions of the stars. If you live in a Western society, which you probably will be if you are reading this book, it is important that you make sure that your Natal Chart uses the Tropical zodiac as this approach is the dominant one used in Western Astrology. The second, and somewhat more complicated factor, is the choice of the House System employed in your Natal Chart. Throughout the history of astrology, there has been more than one approach to the division of the chart into the twelve segments which comprise the House System of the Chart. These systems go by various names such as Placidius, Koch, and Regiomontanus and are usually named after the noted historical astrologers who developed them. Other House Systems are named after their approach to the division of the chart into twelve equal segments such as the system employed in this book which is termed the: “Whole Sign System”.

10 In simplest terms, this system divides the chart into twelve equal house segments each of which is covered by the full 30° of the Zodiac Sign which “carries” the house. Each Sign/House combination begins on 0° of the Sign and ends on 30° of its associated Sign. On this page is illustrated the Whole Sign System in the natural Zodiac which is identical to a chart whose first house carries the rising Sign of Aries.

The Whole Sign System

11 The Fundame ntals of the Astrological Language If your are new to Astrology, you are about to learn a brand new language – a language of Planets, Signs, Houses, Elements, Modes and other specialized terms which comprise the language of this art. Consider this similar to learning the language of music where you would have to learn to speak of notes, clefs, chords and all the other diverse and specialized terms that comprise the musical language. Before we can begin this journey of knowledge and understanding, a distinction must be made concerning the images used to portray the various concepts of Astrology. An astrological image is more than a symbol – it is more rightly termed a “glyph” i.e., a complex symbol with multiple levels of meaning and should always be approached from this perspective. The Ascendant Sign This is the sign of the Zodiac that was rising on the horizon at the moment of your birth. It is a most fundamental aspect of you as an individual – the foundation upon which your individuality is built– and determines the astrological character of the soil out of which your consciousness has grown and developed. The Seven Personal Planets The Planets express aspects of your inner consciousness experience and express, when taken together, the manifestation of the consciousness principal in the human individual. It is well to visualize the Planets as the inner powers of your being which maintain and energize your spiritual life. THE SUN

The Sun represents that aspect of your consciousness which you experience as your self consciousness – the “I” through which you express your free will. THE MOON

The Moon represents that aspect of consciousness which you experience as your inner nature. To the ancients the Moon represented the “sensitive

12 mind” and may be taken to express the inner emotional dimension of the personality as well as the realm of instinct, dream and imagination.

MERCURY

Mercury represents that aspect of your consciousness which your experience as your reason and intellect – the logical and moral intelligence. It is also associated with thinking and communication.

MARS

Mars represents that aspect of your consciousness which you experience as your aggressive natural energy – your will to survive and live which manifests itself as the drive to work and succeed.

JUPITER

Jupiter represents that aspect of your consciousness that you experience as your growth energy – the energy of expansion and of the nurturing will that impels you forward on your evolutionary jo urney and carries within it the potentials of your overall fortune and prosperity in life.

13 SATURN

To the ancients, Saturn represented the power of “agnoia” – self unknowing, the hatred of knowledge or ignorance which causes a restriction and limitation of the Planet/ Sign energy and in the affairs of the House where this planet resides in the chart.

The Lunar Nodes The Lunar Nodes are not actually considered planets but rather sensitive points in the Natal Chart. Their usage is of great antiquity and essentially represents the points of the Moons crossing of the apparent path of the Sun as seen from the Earth (called the “ecliptic”). Their traditional meanings in your Natal Chart are explained below.

THE SOUTH NODE

The position of The South Node in your chart represents an unfulfilled aspect of your consciousness. It is essentially old baggage that you are carrying around that needs to be opened up and examined.

THE NORTH NODE

The position of The North Node in your chart represents the House and Sign position where you will discover what you need to understand the unfulfilled aspect of your consciousness as revealed by the South Node. The North Node in essence represents the key to the understanding and fulfillment of the South Node. It unlocks the “old baggage” so to speak.

14 The Twelve Signs of the Zodiac The twelve signs of the Zodiac are energies that color a planet’s expression when it occupies a specific astrological sign. The Triplicities of the Elements There are four active elements in Astrology – Fire, Water, Air and Earth which correspond to the Spiritual, Emotional, Mental and Physical aspects of your life. The proportions of these four elements in the chart express your fundamental way of perceiving the world. It helps to visualize this as being similar to wearing a pair of glasses that are “tinted” with these elements. The old saying: “She looked at the world through rose colored glasses” conveys the meaning of this aspect of your astrological profile. It is the “tint” which colors your daily experiences. These elements are expressed in the Natal Chart through what are termed “Triplicities”, groups of three Signs that share the same element. The Elements are ancient conceptions that find a broad correspondence in the expression of the human experience of consciousness. Fire is an active energy associated with the force of will, goal directed activity, initiative and creativity. It corresponds with the suite of Wands in the Tarot. Individuals whose Fire element dominates in their chart tend to express initiative and leadership abilities. Earth expresses the action of the body, physicality, strength, growth and the material conditions of life. It is a stable and practical element which corresponds to the suite of Pentacles in the Tarot. The Earth element brings forth a practical, realistic and no nonsense approach to life. Air expresses the action of articulate thought. It is associated with plans, spoken and written communication and things of the mind. Air individuals tend to be very mental and live lives dominated by logic and reason. Swords are the suite of the Tarot to which this element corresponds. Water, the last of the four ancient elements, expresses the actions of the emotions. Water is love and affection, dreams, desires, pleasure, romance and friendship. Water is sensitive, compassionate and intuitive and finds expression in the Tarot suite of Cups. Those who are predominately water live through feeling and value the imagination and often express what they feel through artistic creations or compassionate service to others such as participation in charitable or philanthropic activities.

The Fire Triplicity In the Natal Chart, the Fire Triplicity is comprised of three Signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Fire is the most active of all of the astrological elements and expresses an active, creative and spiritual e nergy. It is the symbol of the will and of action and individuals with this dominant element in their Natal Chart tend to be outgoing, active, energetic, dynamic and spirited. They are enthusiastic and creative individuals who

23 possess leadership potential and who approach life in a positive and aggressive manner.

24

The Earth Triplicity In the Natal Chart, the Earth Triplicity is comprised of three Signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Earth is the most solid and stable of all the elements and yields a temperament concerned with practicality and achieving concrete results. Often there is considerable skill in using and managing material resources coupled with dependability, a realistic and pragmatic attitude and a strong sense of purpose.

25

The Air Triplicity In the Natal Chart, the Air Triplicity is comprised of three Signs: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. These are the Signs of the mental energy and thus express the power of thought and ability to communicate – the intellectual aspect of life; communication in personal and social relationships as well as mental abilities and intellectual attributes. Ideas, intellect, thinking and knowledge are the domain of the Air Element. If the Air element dominates in your Natal Chart your mental and communication abilities are your strongest assets. You will excel in the communication of ideas and prosper socially due to your skill in human relationships.

26

The Water Triplicity The Wate r Triplicity of the Natal Chart consists of the Signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Water is the element of dreams, desires, hopes, wishes, emotions, friendship and love. It is associated with the emotional basis of personal and social relationships and with the unconscious mind. If your dominant element is “Water” it indicates that you are powerfully concerned with feeling, have a sensitive emotional awareness and dwell deeply in the realm of the emotions and the deeper psychic aspects of life.

27

The Complete Triplicities

28 DETERMINATION OF YOUR ELEMENTAL PROFILE It is vitally important to note that when we speak of the Elements of Astrology that we are not referring to a phenomena or substance as defined by the natural sciences. In scientific terms Fire is a process of rapid oxidation and combustion; Earth is usually considered an inorganic substance; Water is the compound resulting from two atoms of hydrogen bonded to one atom of oxygen and Air is a mixture of gasses in the atmosphere. In Astrology the term Element refers to an aggregate of qualities that inhere in life and consciousness which are best described by the terms Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Consider yourself as being compounded of four Astrological elements – Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Thus you are made up of Fire, or energy and activity expressing the action of the will; Earth, the physical and sensory aspect of consciousness, expressing the action of the body; Air, the mind, expressing the action of articulated rational and logical thought; and finally Water, or feeling and imagination, expressing the activity of the emotions. The proportion of these elements with respect to each other in your Chart indicates their relative weight or importance in their expression in your life. Oftentimes one element is clearly dominant in the Chart and would indicated the leading trend of consciousness expression but oftentimes the elemental proportions are almost equal or two or three may dominate and one or two may not even be present in your profile.
