The Journey Continues...

M

y dad always used to say that ‘the journey was just as enjoyable as the destination’, and that’s certainly true in modelling! One of the many joys of this hobby is bringing together disparate pieces of plastic, resin, etch and paint to create some thing rather unique, and the progression of research and construction is an integral part of the process, and can be just as rewarding as looking at the finished product! This is also true of Model Aircraft, as we continue in the pursuit of bringing together some of the most inspirational modelling projects around, married with essential references to make your modelling journey as enjoyable as possible. It was seen in some quarters as a brave move to produce a magazine without any news, previews or reviews, but our aim was to create distinctive product that gave both inspiration and aspiration to the modeller, and in this issue

ot on the heels of their support of Operations ‘New Dawn’ and ‘Enduring Freedom’ at the end of 2010, March 2011 saw the ‘Kestrels’ of VFA137 back in action, participating in ‘Northern Edge’ exercises at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska. At this time they painted up their ‘CAG bird’ in a unique digital-splinter camouflage pattern  For this build I used the 1:48 Hasegawa F/A18E, and added Aires resin cockpit, wheel bays and engine nozzles sets. The cockpit posed a few issues getting it to fit into the fuselage, but a little patience and plenty of test fitting and the removal of the moulded in nosewheel bay did the job. As the kit is for an early model ‘E’ the panels around the nose electronics bay and the chin antennas need to be revised and rescribed, my best advice here is to check your references.  I painted the aircraft in standard US Navy colours and for the unique look of this aircraft I used a set of decals from Hong Kong manufacturer

06-09-Kestrel-MA-0117.indd 6

DXM. The quality is excellent, as they are printed by Cartograf and the colours are bright and very clear and the instructions are spot on. I used plenty of Micro-Sol and Micro-Set and they settled down very nicely. I then added an Ammo of MIG Panel Line Wash to pick out the details and they fixed all of the smaller items before semi-matt coat sealed everything in. Under the wings, I used some weaponry from an Academy Super Hornet and chose the AIM-120C and GBU-31 JDAM, which were suitably weathered for effect. This certainly was a unique aircraft and one that I thoroughly enjoyed building and decalling. MA

The General Dynamics F-111/RF-111C

T

he General Dynamics F-111C was a variant of the F-111 Aardvark developed to meet Australian requirements. The design was based on the F-111A model but included the F-111Bs longer wings and the strengthened FB-111A undercarriage. Four aircraft were converted to the RF-111C reconnaissance variant, and four F-111As were purchased and converted to F-111C standard to replace F-111Cs destroyed during accidents. Australia also operated fifteen F-111Gs between 1993 and 2007, mainly for conversion training. Australia ordered twentyfour F-111Cs aircraft to replace their Canberra’s in the bombing and tactical strike role. While Three RAAF F-111s parked on the flight line during the joint Australia/New Zealand/US exercise ‘Pitch Black ‘84’

the first aircraft was officially handed over in September 1968, structural issues delayed the entry into service, so twenty-four F-4 Phantoms were leased as a stopgap. The F-111C entered Australian service after the technical problems were resolved, and the RAAF’s first six F-111Cs arrived at Amberley on 1 July 1973, and three subsequent groups of six F-111s arrived on 27 July, 28 September and 4 December, and were allocated to No.1 and No.6 Squadrons. After entering service the F-111 proved highly

successful, and although it never saw combat, the F-111C was the fastest, long-range combat aircraft in Southeast Asia. The RF-111C carried a reconnaissance pack with four cameras and an infrared line scanner unit, and as already noted, four ex-USAF F-111As were refitted to F-111C standard and delivered to Australia as attrition replacements in 1982. The F-111Cs were equipped to carry the Pave Tack Targeting Pod in the mid-1980s and underwent an extensive Avionics Upgrade

Program through 1998. Under this program, their F-111Cs were given upgraded to digital avionics including twin mission computers, a modern digital databus, digital weapon management system, new AN/APQ-171 terrain-following radar, new AN/APQ-169 attack radar, and twin ring-laser gyro INS. In late 2001, wing fatigue problems were discovered in one of the F-111C fleet, and as a result, a decision was made in May 2002 to replace the wings with spares taken from ex-USAF F-111Fs stored AMARC. ‘short span wings’ underwent a refurbishment in Australia, which included extending the span, in effect making the wings the same as the F-111C and F-111G models. In 2007, Australia decided to retire all of its RAAF F-111s. The drawdown of the RAAF’s F-111 fleet began with the retirement of the F-111G models operated by No. 6 Squadron in late 2007, and between 21 and 24 November 2011, twenty-three of the RAAF’s F-111C and F-111Gs which had not been selected for preservation were buried at the Swanbank landfill site in Queensland, as the RAAF it concluded that it would be cheaper to bury them than scrap them. or this ‘Aussie-Aardvark I’m using the ‘Special Edition’ Academy 1:48 F-111C with new sprues to update the cockpit and new weapons. The decals are brilliant being done by one of my favourite decal manufactures ‘Cartograf, and offer six different schemes, four of which are the same aircraft but at different periods in its life. The same goes for the last two schemes, again for the same aircraft in different periods of its life. Last but not least we have a lovely turned brass pitot tube. Work began on the cockpit, which comprises of a cockpit floor, rear bulkhead and two control columns. The seats come as two parts with seatbelts moulded on. The instrument panel is one of the updated parts, and here the detail is really good, so first I painted the cockpit tub Dark Gull Grey and when dry a thin Raw Umber wash was applied to give some depth. The seats pads and back I painted Olive Drab and then I added

thinners and drop of yellow and sprayed this in the middle of the seat just to break up the colour. The instrument panel is of the raised variety and is rather good. To get the best out of it I first painted it with Tamiya NATO Black and then dry brushed Light Grey over the top. When dry I painted the radar screens silver then added Tamiya clear green and red, and for the dial faces I used small decals from my ‘spares-box’. Now with the cockpit and front undercharge complete they were fitted between the two halves of the front portion of the fuselage and set aside to dry. I them moved onto main section of the rear fuselage and it

is at this point you need to open up a few holes and attach the swing-wing mechanism. Once you have decided how you want the wings to go you can attach the tops of the wings. Before attaching the top of the rear fuselage don’t forget to install the engine turbine faces, and to cut off the rear potion of the lower fuselage and install the chaff and flare dispensers on both sides using parts S17 and 18. If you show the wings folded you will need to install parts 42 and 43, but if you want the wings open then install parts S34 and S35, as these are rubber fuselage gators for when the wings are in the open position.  When I test fitted the cockpit and front fuselage section to the rear, I found that there was a huge step between the two. So after some thought and a few choice words, I came up with a solution. Using a piece if sprue and a thick piece of plastic card I measured the distance of the gap and cut the sprue and card to the

same measurement.  I then attached an oblong shaped piece of card to the top of the sprue using super glue, thus making a ‘T- shape’. Once dry I eased this concoction into the front part of the fuselage and continued on with copious amounts of putty to blend this in and left it to dry overnight. Once cured I set about the task of sanding and smoothing the fuselage into shape, and it worked perfectly, and I just had to re-scribe any lost panel lines! Next came the the afterburner cans and the

fuel dump mast, which were painted in various Alclad shades, and also at this point I cemented together the tail planes and tail sections. The wheels were then joined and note the ‘C’ version has different hubs, and these are on the aforementioned new sprue. My attention now turned to the engine intakes, which comprise of just three parts. I sprayed Tamiya Matt White on their interiors and then masked up the front of the intakes, so that when installed all I had to do was push some foam down ready for spraying. For my F-111C the weapons load was an AGM-142 bomb, a AN/ASW-55 data-link pod and an AN/

Two F-111Cs during exercise ‘Kangaroo ‘81’

AVQ Pave Pack Targeting pod. There are some other small updates to add including the KB-18 Strike camera, and an AN/ANR-62 Compass Sail Antennae is also included is the AGM-130 bomb. These, and their sway-braces were all suitably painted ready for the final assembly.  After a good clean up I was ready to paint, and began with a coat of Vallejo Grey Acrylic Primer, and left this to dry overnight. In later

12-17-Combat-Edge-Aardvarks-MA-0117.indd 17

life all the Australian F-111s were painted in a FS36118 Gunship Grey, and again I turned to Vallejo for this shade. The colour was applied in thin coats and once complete I added a couple of drops White and then sprayed this in a random pattern onto the middle of the panels just to break up the block colour. The tail was sprayed with Xtracolour FS15044 Insignia Blue the nose with Tamiya Matt Black. Once this was fully dry two coats of Johnson’s ‘Klear’ was applied in preparation for the decals. From the decal options I chose F-111C A8-131 30th Anniversary, 2003 scheme. The decals, as you would expect went on with no real problems, but use plenty of water, as they are extremely thin. Whilst these dried I fitted the undercarriage, and doors, the airbrake, the tail hook, and finally the wheels, and with everything dry another coat of Johnsons ‘Klear’ readied the model for weathering. As this was an ‘anniversary’ aircraft, I decided not to go overboard with weathering, and I used some Flory Models Dark Dirt Wash. The final things to do were to add the weapons and the nose pitot. Academy have used their old kit and included some rather nice updates, but that awful moulding problem with the two fuselage halves really caused me some headaches. However, that’s one of the joys of modelling - if you encounter a problem how you get over it, and yes I would agree I should never have been there in the first place! However, if you like a challenge and a large aircraft – then the F-111C is a good choice! MA

Arctic Cat Angel Exposito adds a Winter look to the 1:72 Hasegawa Jaguar GR.3A

T

his 1:72 Hasegawa kit is now quite an old offering, but still one that is very acceptable. The kit comes with fine engraved panel lines, great details all around, with well-defined compartments and bays. However, the LRMTS nose is shown as moulded on, so I had to cut out the ‘windows’ and add my own glazing. The cockpit is also very simple with the dial and consoles replicated as decals. As the undercarriage was also simplified add added plenty of scratchbuilt details to bring them to life. The fit is generally very acceptable, needing just a little of putty her and there. I start painting the cockpit with Gunze H32, and worked exclusively with Gunze acrylics, except for the engine areas where I turned to Alclad. The process of painting this particular scheme is a little complicated, but checking to my references and taking my time, it came out rather well. I painted all of the upper surfaces with Dark Sea Grey - H331, and the lower surfaces Dark

ne of the prime tasks for the Jaguar was that of defending NATO’s northern flank, and, operating inside the Arctic Circle, Jaguars had been making regular visits to the Royal Norwegian Air Force base at Bardufoss. No.41 Squadron were the ‘Arctic Specialists’ within the Jaguar force, although both Nos. 6 and 54 Squadrons also made regular trips into the ‘cold lands’. Many interesting ‘whitewashed’ ARTF schemes were applied to the Jaguar for their cold weather excursions. For the full story of the Jaguar, then our latest MDF is a must have!

Finally, to complete the scheme the wing leading edges were painted black. After a gloss coat I applied the decals which the Model Alliance #MA-72122 sheet. The aircraft I chose was Jaguar GR.3A XX720 ‘GB’ of No.54 Squadron during arctic exercises at Bardufoss in 2004. These were sealed with another gloss coat and I then applied a selection oil washes and AK Interactive wreathing products. Finally a matt coat brought everything together and my ‘Arctic Cat’ was complete. MA

aving previously built Tamiya’s superb Spitfire Mk.XVIe, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I had no hesitation in ordering their Mk VIII. As with most kits, the interior came first, and this is built in a separate section, with several bulkheads and a floor pan. Everything was then given a coat of Tamiya XF-71 Interior Green, then Eduard’s #333085 Interior Set was used to enhance the cockpit. This set comes with lots of etched parts, including the harness, which was very good. The interior was then given a dark wash; to it give a well-used look. Next came the fuselage, and here the two halves joined together really well, with only a tiny seem, which was easily sanded with no problems. The tailfin, elevators and rudder were next, and these all have metal hinges, so the flight controls

The Tamiya kit is relatively expensive, but you certainly get what you pay for! can be shown deflected if desired. The wings followed, again with minimal problems, with just a bit of Tamiya was tape needed to hold the correct dihedral. The engine was the next item and again this has some great detailing. On the Mk.XVIe I had the cowling removed to show off the engine, but here I decided to leave the cowling fixed to show off the iconic ‘Sharksmouth’. Another great feature is that the cowling can be held in place with the supplied magnets, to enable quick removal. As an aircraft engineer myself, it was great to see the level of surface detail on this kit, and all the panel lines and rivets look so good.  I was soon ready for painting, and I decided I

wanted a very weathered look on this build, as the real aircraft were operated from primitive airbases in the jungle, and didn’t get much in the way of TLC. I began with a coat of Tamiya Grey Primer, and then all the panel lines preshaded with Black. The wing walk area was then given a coat of Alclad Aluminium, with a layer of Johnson’s ‘Future’ on top, and then some chipping fluid was applied. The camouflage colours of Tamiya XF-81 and XF-82 were then added with a coat of XF-83 for the undersides. The wing walk area was then rubbed back to reveal the aluminium underneath.

22-24-Spitfire-MA-0117.indd 23

To get the weathered effect I wanted on the roundels, I decided to paint them, instead of using the supplied decals, this was done with the Insignia Series Paint Mask set #32019, and these masks made the process really easy. The rest of the markings were from the kits decals, with a light coat of the camouflage colour sprayed over the top, to give them a faded look. The model was again sprayed another coat of ‘Future’ to seal the decals, then some AK Interactive Panel Line was added and streaked backwards in the direction of the airflow to achieve the dirty look I was after.  The exhaust marks were done with a welldiluted spray of XF-57 Buff, and the guns cordite staining was a mix of XF-1 Matt Black and X-19 Smoke, and for the scuffed metallic areas around the cockpit door I used Citadel Necron Compound. The last items to be detailed and fitted were the undercarriage legs, which come as two halves with a metal pin sandwiched in the middle to hold the weight of the model.

A final coat of Matt varnish was then applied, which toned down and balanced colours, and I must say I was I was very pleased with the final appearance. No aerial wire was fitted, as the airfields these aircraft operated from had no radios, so the radio set had been removed from the aircraft.  This really is a great kit, which I can heartily recommend to all interested modellers. I know the Tamiya offering is relatively expensive compared to others, but you certainly get what you pay for, and I enjoyed the experience so much that much that I have started the Tamiya Mk.IX. MA

his is the F-16B Plus Fighting Falcon and a very nice 1:48 offering from Hasegawa. The kit comes with options for building an F-16B from the 307th TFS 31st TFW (HS), 17th TFS 363rd TFW (SW) or 13th TFS 432nd TFW (MJ). Now I’m sure by now that everyone knows the F-16. It’s one of the most successful fighter jets of all time and remains in service with air forces around the world, over thirty-years after it started to equip USAF squadrons, with its state-of-the-art electronics and agile high performance. As you can expect from a Hasegawa kit, the plastic is good quality and there were no significant fit issues. I did experience some difficulty with the checkerboard and the ‘MJ’ decals on one side but otherwise, no other problems. I built the kit ‘straight-from-the box’ apart from some detailing of the gear bays using

26-28-Super-16-MA-0117.indd 26

I had no difficulty choosing a colour scheme for my model! Evergreen plastic and some static dischargers made from toothbrush bristles. I decided to include some crew figures trimmed and fixed into position to suggest movement in the cockpit. I had no difficulty choosing a colour scheme for my model. I’ve always liked the Misawa (Japan) F-16s with the checkerboard tail markings and orange ejector seat warning triangles. The 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron was activated with F-16s on 1st June 1985 and the scheme I have recreated dates to the period from 1985 to 1992, before the squadron was re-equipped

with F-16C/Ds and the checkerboard was replaced with a red tail band. The specific aircraft recreated, 83-172, only remained with the 13th TFS until 1988 when she transferred to the 68th TFS and then, in 1990 to the 6516th TS at Edwards. 83-172 moved to the 416th at Edwards where she remained until used in contamination tests for the F-35 project. I used the trusted Alclad paints for the exhaust areas and Tamiya acrylics for the rest. I pre-shaded the model using Black and then a combination of XF-83 Medium Sea Grey (RAF) with a little flat White added for the undersides,

XF-66 Light Grey for the Mid-Grey colour and XF-77 IJN Grey for the topside shade, and the nose was painted using XF-54. The cockpit glass was shaded using Tamiya Clear Smoke following the traditional sanding out of the seam. I added a few lighter mixes of the main camouflage colours to achieve some further shading, and then applied a few coats of Johnson’s ‘Klear’ mixed with Tamiya acrylic thinners to get the gloss coat needed for decals. Another coat of ‘Klear’, a panel wash of black oil paint mixed with white spirit and finally a coat of flat varnish brought painting to a close. I filled up the rails with fuel tanks; a travel pod and practice round missiles to make the F-16 look loaded. F-16Bs did sometimes use three drop tanks because the inclusion of the second seat came at the expense of internal fuel capacity. The loadout is not typical, but my thinking was that it was about to depart for participation as a static display aircraft at an air show some distance away from Misawa! Overall, I was very pleased with the end result on this one. MA

Jan Sairanen builds a 1:48 Iranian F-86 with the help of some resin and Hi-Decals markings

T

he moment that Hi-Decals announced their then upcoming sheet with #48034 featuring some Iranian Sabres I was hooked. Sadly finding something to fit them on was not so easy, as it wasn´t as simple as picking any old Sabre kit for this as the IIAF’s Sabres were of the F-40 variety, that is with extended slatted wings, and where the blazes do I find one of those? After a search on the inter-web I finally found a Hasegawa F-86F-40 kit in Japan. The kit parts were really nice, but I felt the need for some resin!

The wings were moulded with the slats on, and being controlled by gravity, they should be drooped when on the ground. So I decided to add a Kasl resin slat set. Elsewhere, True Details had also some excellent resin wheels, and whilst I was in that area I thought I might as well add some resin wheel bays too, and being me, I had to get an Aires cockpit for good measure, along with an Eduard canopy mask. The kit went together well and I toiled away on the wings and eventually managed to fit the slats and wheel wells. I then found I was in need of some pylons and again the

Internet came to the rescue with a spare sprue from an Academy Sabre. After priming the cockpit parts with Alclad Black primer I dusted on a few thin layers of Lifecolor FS36375 and added then an oil wash made from a mix of Windsor & Newton Black and Natural Umber. My philosophy for cockpit weathering isn`t so much that I want the cockpit to look worn, as much as I want the details to be visible from some distance.

The Hi-Decals set went on quite superbly

After the cockpit was done I added the intake trunking and exhaust, I also painted the wheels and struts, and added some wiring on the airbrake. A little note to remember about the fuselage is that as the Hasegawa kit represents a Japanese example, they came with an air inlet close to the air brake on the right side, the IIAF jets didn’t have that so it was removed and the spot filled with putty and plasticard. Soon I was ready to paint and after a clean up I added

30-32-Desert-Sabre-MA-0117.indd 31

some pre-shading, first along panel lines, edges and details and then I filled the void in the middle with squiggles. I didn’t use black, as this creates too strong a contrast, but Tamiya XF-63 German Grey is ideal. Once dry I added Lifecolor FS30400 followed by FS34079 and FS30140, and the undersides were painted in FS36622. The scheme was painted freehand with my Iwata airbrush. Then came some detail painting in wells and housings followed by at least seven coats of Johnson’s ‘Klear’ so there was

no need further polishing. The Hi-Decals set went on superbly with Micro-Sol and Micro-Set, and for the stencils I used some Hasegawa decals. I let it all cure for a day or so before starting with the last leg, the weathering process. First of a pin-wash was applied into the panel lines, and I used the same mixture of artist oils as before. Then I used a combination of MIG Pigments, AK Interactive washes and filters and Tamiya weathering sets to add rain marks, dirt streaks and lubricant and fuel leaks. When done I sealed everything in with a coat of Alclad Flat before starting the final assembly. In the end I was quite pleased with the build, and my thanks go to Tom Cooper and Diego of Hi-Decal, as these gents have a tremendous knowledge of the IIAF and later IRIAF and I´m thankful to them for keeping me on the straight and narrow with pictures and answering my queries. Freedom Fighter, Tiger II and Tigereye MDF Scaled Down #5 By Andy Evans One of the most enduring military aircraft designs ever produced, the F-5 series has served for more than four decades since its initial flight on July 31, 1963. The F-5 remains an agile, highly manoeuvrable, reliable supersonic fighter; lead-in trainer and ‘aggressor’, combining advanced aerodynamic design, engine performance and low operating costs. More than 2,600 were built by Northrop and with even more built under coproduction and licensing agreements with Canada, the Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, Spain and Switzerland. From the F-5's first delivery in 1964 to its final one in 1989, every aircraft has delivered the performance as promised, and approximately two-thirds of the original production F-5's remain operational in twenty-six countries, including the United States. Being smaller and simpler than contemporaries such as the F-4, the F-5 cost less to both purchase and operate, making it a popular export aircraft. The F-5A ‘Freedom Fighter’ entered service in the early 1960s, and although the USAF at the time had no acknowledged need for a light fighter, it did procure roughly 1,200 T-38 Talons, which were directly based on the F-5 design. After winning the International Fighter Aircraft competition in 1970, a program aimed at providing effective low-cost fighters to American allies, Northrop introduced the secondgeneration F-5E ‘Tiger II’ in 1972. dedicated reconnaissance version, the RF-5 ‘Tigereye’ and the ill-fated F-20 ‘Tigershark’. For the F-5 it has been a fast ride into aviation history! The story of the F-5 is brought to life in this new MDF Scaled Down from SAM Publications, and the types background; operators, colour schemes and roles are all included, along with colour profiles, technical diagrams and extensive walk arounds. I

’ve always been fond of the Harrier, and while I like each variant, the US Marines version of the Harrier II Plus is my favourite. For this build I chose the 1:48 Hasegawa kit along with an Aires resin cockpit and Superscale decals. Surveying the instructions my initial concern with the build was the fit of the main components of the airframe. Hasegawa has engineered the fuselage into several parts with the intent of making other version of the airframe possible. Though it’s not something I usually do, I decided to mock up the pieces to see just what I’d be dealing with. First, I joined the two fuselage halves since getting them together was fairly straightforward. The only concern here was the insert that makes up the belly of the airframe. I was able to test fit this piece to determine that with some careful alignment and gluing I’d have a rather good fit. I was able

he operational success of the earlier AV-8A/C had confirmed the US Marine Corps’ belief in VSTOL technology and its advantages for their particular type of warfare. What was needed now was a follow-on aircraft that met the Corps’ future requirements for a ‘light attack’ aircraft that carried a big punch. The unique Harrier, previously much maligned by the US

to apply glue from the inside of the fuselage tub using my fingers to move the piece into place for careful alignment. Fortunately, the seams left behind fall on natural panel lines, so clean up was minimal. The piece fit perfectly. Next I wanted to work on the Aires resin set, and I was entirely blown away with the test fit here. I didn’t need to even remove the casting block from the main tub. Removing some moulded ribbing on the fuselage sidewalls of the kit pieces was all that was needed. The forward fuselage and nose consists of two assemblies brought together by two pieces each. The nose was weighted with a few grams of lead for good measure and assembled. The forward fuselage sections were taped up, and a mock-up of the wing and nose assemblies promises a rather straightforward assembly. Not so easy is getting

military as ‘not being able to carry a matchbox across a football field’ had matured into a very capable aircraft which the US Marine Corps saw as a highly valued asset. The need for a new generation of VSTOL galvanised studies undertaken by McDonnell Douglas, following their abortive collaborative AV-16 ‘Advanced Harrier’ effort with the UK. These studies came under the aegis of the AV-8A Plus, a much less ambitious programme than the AV-16, which delighted the Marines who wanted the Harrier to be simple and survivable. In turn this became the AV-8B Program, which was originally proposed in 1973 and formalised by the Defence Armed Services Committee in March 1976. Central to this new breed of Harrier was an advanced ‘big-wing’, originally proposed by Hawker and later derived from NASA-based technology of supercritical aerofoils, where the drag was reduced and the lift increased. To achieve the maximum benefits in terms of weight saving, advanced structural materials were used instead of traditional metal, and a unique graphite epoxy construction gave the AV-8B the first carbon-fibre technology wing fitted to a military aircraft. At the rear of the wing a large, single-slotted flap was integrated to support the jet efflux from the engine nozzles, which increased take-

off lift and helped to arrest the loss of performance during vertical landings. The cockpit would be raised and the outrigger wheels moved inboard the better to facilitate rough field work, and the `elephant’s ear’ engine intakes were also redesigned and increased in size, initially with a double row of ‘blow-in’ suction relief doors (later revised to a single row) and reshaped forward cold-air nozzles with a `zero-scarf’ design; these two features alone added an amazing 800lb of thrust.

The AV-8B was an entirely new animal and packed a mighty punch

The Grumman E-2 Hawkeye

T

he Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye is an all-weather, carrier capable AEW platform. The E-2 was the first aircraft designed specifically for its role, as opposed to a modification of an existing airframe, and variants of the Hawkeye have been in continuous production since 1960, giving it the longest production run of any carrier-based aircraft. In addition to U.S. Navy service, smaller numbers of E-2s have been sold to the armed forces Egypt, France, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Singapore and Taiwan. The twin turboprop Hawkeye shares its basic airframe with the C-2 Greyhound but is fitted with a twenty-four foot rotating radome housing an APS-145 (some

have the APS-139 radar). The first aircraft to perform this mission was the Grumman E-1 Tracer (a variant of the S-2 Tracker anti-submarine aircraft),

Hawkeye 2000s first deployed in 2003 aboard the USS Nimitz with VAW-117, the ‘Wallbangers’

which saw service from 1954 to 1964, when the E-1’s successor, the E-2 Hawkeye took over the role. The five-man crew consists of two pilots and three equipment operators and as a team, the Hawkeyes surround the fleet with an early warning ring capable of directing air defences against any enemy. Each E-2C also can maintain all-weather patrols, track, automatically and simultaneously, more than 600 targets, and control more than forty airborne intercepts.

Since entering combat during the Vietnam War, the E-2 has served the US Navy around the world, acting as the electronic ‘eyes of the fleet’. In August 1981, a Hawkeye from VAW-124 ‘Bear Aces’ directed two Tomcats from VF-‘Black Aces’ in an intercept mission in the Gulf of Sidra that resulted in the downing of two Libya Su-22s. Hawkeyes from VAW-123 aboard the USS America directed a group of F-14s fighters flying the Combat Air Patrol during Operation ‘El Dorado Canyon’ against Libyan terrorist targets during 1986 and more recently, E-2Cs provided the command and control land-attack missions during the Gulf Wars. As noted the E-2C Hawkeye squadrons played a critical role in air operations during Operations ‘Desert Storm’, ‘Southern Watch’ and ‘Desert Fox’, and the E-2 Hawkeye remains a crucial component of all US Navy carrier air wings, and

each carrier is equipped with four Hawkeyes (five in some situations), allowing for continuous twenty-four hour-a-day operations of at least one E-2 with one or two to undergoing maintenance. Up to 2005 the Hawkeye’s were organised into East and West coast wings, supporting the respective fleets. However, the East coast wing was disestablished, all aircraft were organised into a single wing based at Point Mugu, California. During Operation ‘Enduring Freedom’ and ‘Iraqi Freedom’ all ten regular Navy Hawkeye squadrons flew overland sorties. They provided battle management for attack of enemy ground targets, close-air-support coordination, combat search and rescue control, airspace management, as well as data link and communication relay for both land and naval forces. Hawkeye 2000s first deployed in 2003 aboard the USS Nimitz with VAW-117, the ‘Wallbangers’, and Navy E-2C Hawkeyes have been upgraded with eight-bladed propellers as part of the NP2000 program, and the first squadron to cruise with the new propellers was VAW-124 ‘Bear Aces’. In 2014, several E-2C Hawkeyes from the ‘Bear Aces’ of VAW-124 were deployed from USS George HW Bush as flying command posts and air traffic controllers over Iraq during Operation ‘Inherent Resolve’ against IS. VAW-120, the E-2C fleet replacement squadron began receiving E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes for training use in July 2010, and 27 March 2014, the first E-2Ds were delivered to the VAW-125. The E-2D achieved Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in October 2014 when VAW-125 was certified with five operational aircraft aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

hen Kinetic released kit in 2009 I laid one down in my stash and then set about adding aftermarket details such as Quick Boost’s Seamless Intakes and Fightertown VAW-115 ‘Liberty Bells’ decals, ready to build at the appropriate time! The kit is moulded in light grey plastic and also gives options for US and French versions. One of the most desirable options, however, in my opinion is the choice of building the model with the wings folded. I built all the major airframe parts as sub-assemblies including the outer wings, centre wing section, tail fins, horizontal stab, flaps, fuselage and rotordome. The cockpit detail is a little sparse, as you only get get rudimentary seats, control columns and an instrument panel, but not much can be seen through the cockpit glass. I did add some

seatbelts using Tamiya tape but that’s about it. One word of caution - this plane will be a tail sitter if you do not add nose weight! With the cockpit and nose gear well in place there is not a lot of room for weight in the far forward nose, so you need to be creative with some fuselage placement! Once the tail sitting was eliminated it was on to closing up the fuselage by attaching the cockpit/ windscreen glass and fairing it in with the fuselage. I then taped off the portions of the windscreen and windows that were to remain clear. The radome is clear as well to account for the window on the lower portion where the landing lights and glideslope indicator lights are visible. That window was

also masked and the radome blended into the forward fuselage. Lots of dry fitting and checking is recommended before committing glue, and there are many delicate parts on the sprues as well, namely the landing gear braces and hydraulic actuator rods. With the major assembly out of the way it was ‘time to prime’. A light coat of Mr Surfacer 1000 showed any seams or defects I missed, and these were fixed with putty, sanding and re-scribing as necessary. Once this

cruise. You still need to use some of the kit-supplied decals, which to Kinetic’s credit are really very nice. The landing gear door edges were painted Red using a fine brush,

and when dry glued into place. I finally called it good enough, gave the model another coat of Pollyscale Satin and started in on panel line washing/ highlighting. Here I use artist Windsor & Newton oils thinned with mineral spirits, and as these aircraft are well maintained I didn’t go overboard. Finally I painted the leading edges of the propellers with Dull Aluminium, added the data stencils and sprayed with more Pollyscale Satin. This is a very impressive model, which took quite some time to build, but in the end it looks darn good on my display shelf! MA

orn out of Anglo-French accord and later discord, the SEPECAT Jaguar became one of the most capable and formidable fast jets of the 20th Century. The Jaguar has served with distinction in the Close Air Support and Reconnaissance roles with the Royal Air Force and Armée de L’Air, and enjoyed some export success with Oman, Ecuador, Nigeria and India, who are now the last operators of the aircraft. Slated for retirement from RAF service in the early 1990’s, the Jaguar was suddenly thrust back into the spotlight with the Gulf War, and proved to the decision makers just what a capable and versatile aircraft they had, and one worth future investment rather than just the scrapman's torch. This new Datafile from SAM Publications is not only an account of the Jaguar's airframe, operators, roles and systems, but also a celebration of a much-loved aircraft, and one sadly missed in our skies. Includes full details of the aircraft in service, comprehensive walk arounds, colour profiles, scale plans and how to model the Jaguar in popular scales.

n the past few years HobbyBoss have got into the habit of supplying the modeller with subjects and sub-variants not widely covered before and at a relatively affordable price. The Hawk T Mk 67, even though produced by Academy a few years ago was a welcome addition. On opening the box I was pleased to see a simple but well-appointed kit. So work began with the seats, which are made up of six plastic and five etched parts. I must say that when built up and painted they looked very nice, with some dry brushing to pop out the details. The cockpit tub was given a coat of Dark Gull Grey, as were the instrument panels. The side panels were then carefully picked out with Tamiya Rubber Black before detailing the

‘knobs and bobs’ with Citadel acrylics, and I used the kit decals for the instrument panels The vinyl hoods were given a coat of Rubber Black too and before I knew it I was ready to close up the nose section, adding around 15 grams of nose weight – just in case! The rest of the build was completed in one sitting, and the engine exhaust was given a coat of Alclad II Burnt Steel and Jet Exhaust. Most of the small pieces were left off until painting was finished, however because on the integral style of the various blade antennae and pitot I had to add them at this stage. Some of the joints did need

a little filler, especially underneath along the centre of the fuselage. The seam on the canopy was dealt with using Micro Mesh and Johnson’s ‘Future’ before it was masked-off and given a coat of Black before attaching it to the airframe. The entire model was then given a coat of Tamiya White Primer, and I pre-shaded a few of the more prominent panels with Dark Grey. The canopy frames are White so I carefully masked these off

too. The wing tips and rudder were then sprayed with a mix of Tamiya X-7 Red and X-6 Orange, and I had to give this a few coats before I was happy with the shade I was looking for. This was left overnight to cure before masking. I gave the underside a coat of Ammo of MIG Light Compass Grey, which in turn was masked and Tamiya XF-59 with a drop of White was applied for the for the Tan. Panzer Putty was then employed before Ammo of MIG Forest Green was applied. The more Panzer Putty and the final coat

of XF-61 Dark Green completed the camouflage. I used Lifecolor Olive for the nose. When all the masking was removed I was greeted with a very bright scheme. Then I gave the model several coats of Alclad II Aqua Gloss in preparation for the decals. With the marking applied I added another coat of Aqua Gloss before all panels lines were given a pin-wash of Black/Brown oil paint thinned with white spirit. This was then removed in the direction of the airflow. The undercarriage, which had been made up earlier was quite an

COMBAT-ZONE

Hitler’s All Rounder Anthony Tucker-Jones profiles Hitler’s infamous and very versatile Fw 190 ‘Butcher Bird’

British soldier at Bizerte aerodrome with a captured Fw 190

T

he Focke-Wulf Fw 190 is generally viewed as a far superior fighter than the much more famous Messerschmitt Bf 109 - and for good reason. This highly adaptable aircraft served in an enormous variety of roles, including fighter, night-fighter, fighter-bomber/ground attack, reconnaissance and torpedo bomber throughout much of the Second World War. It initially appeared as an interim fighter designed to complement the Bf 109 and the first production model, the Fw 190A1 was deployed on occupation duties in France in the summer of 1941, from where it could threaten the British Isles. This meant that the Fw 190 fighter did not go into service until after Hitler’s attack on the Soviet Union in late June 1941. Early production Fw 190s were armed with four machine guns

Thanks to its performance and agility the Fw 190 was dubbed the ‘Butcher Bird.’ This is an A-8/R2

53 COMBAT-ZONE Fw 190G-2 with 500kg bomb and two 300-litre tanks under the wings

By June 1944 there were just 31 Fw 190 fighters available on the Eastern Front

The Fw 190 served in North Africa from late 1942

mounted in the upper fuselage and wing roots. This proved inadequate firepower and aircraft were retrofitted with heavier cannon in each outer wing. When it made its appearance in the autumn of 1941 it quickly established Luftwaffe superiority for some months. The following year it began to replace the Bf 109 in Western Europe but the latter continued to serve in a range of roles on the Eastern Front. Its opponents knew the Fw 190 as the ‘Butcher Bird’, which says much for its killing power over other fighters. It was developed in the autumn of 1937 after the Reichsluftfahrtministerium placed a contract. Two proposals were developed by Kurt Tank, one with a liquid cooled Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine and the other with the then new air-cooled BMW 139 radial. The latter was chosen with OberIng R. Blaser leading the design team the following year. In May 1939 the prototype Fw 190V1 was completed consisting of a cantilevered low-wing monoplane of stressed skin construction. It first took to the air at Bremen on 1 June 1939. The V2 flew that October. A decision to replace the BMW 139 with the longer and heavier BMW 801 meant relocating the cockpit further aft. This made for a much more comfortable flight for the pilot with fumes and overheating greatly reduced.

The subsequent V3 and V4 prototypes were abandoned but the V5 with the new engine was finished in early 1940. The V5 had its wingspan increased by one metre, which although slowing the aircraft slightly gave a superior climb and made it more manoeuvrable. These were vital prerequisites for a successful dog-fighter. When a preproduction batch of 30 Fw 190A-0 were built the initial nine had the original shorter wing. In February 1941 the first aircraft were handed over to Erprobungskommando 190 based at Rechlin-Rogenthin for evaluation. The following month Jagdgeschwader 26 began to prepare for the new fighter’s entry into service with the Luftwaffe. Its one-piece rearward sliding canopy gave good all round visibility and the pilots immediately took to their new aircraft. The early production version was dubbed the Fw 190A-1, which had the longer wings, the BMW 801C engine and was armed with four 7.92mm MG 17 machineguns. The later proved wholly inadequate after 6/JG 26 clashed with RAF Spitfires on 27 September 1941. Improvements led to the Fw 190A-2 that had a longer span and heavier armament, which in turn was followed by the excellent A-3 fighter-bomber. These were supplemented by the A-4 and A-5 with some of

the latter modified as two-seater trainers. The Fw 190A-6 featured a lighter wing and armament of four 20mm cannon. The A-7 appeared in late 1943 equipped with two cannon and two machine guns. The final A-8 had two machine guns and could carry up to four cannon, plus bombs and rockets. The up-gunned Fw 190A-2 was fitted with an improved engine and armed with two MG 17s mounted above the engine and two 20mm FF cannon in the wing roots. Two additional MG 17s in the outer wing panels often supplemented these. The Fw 190A-3 featured the 1,800hp (1342-kW) BMW 801Dg engine. It had the cannons moved to the outer wing panels, with faster firing MG 151s being installed in the root positions. Sub variants of this model included the Fw 190A-3/U1 and A-3/U3 close support aircraft and the A-3/U4 reconnaissance aircraft. The A-4 that appeared in 1942 began to include the MW-50 water-methanol injection booster, that increased engine output for short periods cranking the top speed up to 416mph. To cope with the conditions in the Mediterranean the A-4/Trop was equipped with filters to protect the engine from choking dust and sand and could carry a bomb. Problems with the engine overheating led to the Fw 190A-5 in 1943, this had a new engine

mounting which moved it 15cm forward. It was built in numerous variants, which included the A-5/U2 which had just two machine guns but could take bomb racks and drop fuel tanks. It was also fitted with flame-dampers so that it could operate at night. The U3 could carry bombs both on the fuselage and on the wings. Fighterbomber versions included the U6, U8 and U 11. The U14 and U15 were torpedo bomber variants. The Fw 190A-6 was introduced in June 1943, incorporating a lighter weight wing that could take four 20mm MG 151/20 cannon and was the forerunner of the A-6/R1 with six 20mm cannon, R2 with two 30mm cannon, R3 with an additional cannon beneath each wing and the R6 the final A-6 variant armed with a 210mm WGr.21 rocket launch tube under each wing. The A-7 appeared in December 1943 but was only built in small numbers, with 13mm machine guns replacing the 7.92mm nose mounted machineguns. The A-8 had greatly increased internal fuel storage and included numerous variants similar to the A6 family. Notable amongst these was the R7 with an armoured cockpit and the R11 all-weather fighter with heated canopy and radio navigation. Problems with the Fw 190A’s engine at altitude led to the 190B and 190C. These though were abandoned in favour of the 190D fitted with the Junkers Jumo 213A inline engine. This required a longer nose and to compensate the fuselage had to be lengthened. The Fw 190D9 was known as the ‘long-nose 190’ or ‘Dora 9.’ This was armed with two wing mounted MG 151/20 cannon and two MG 131 guns above the engine. It also had the MW 50 injection to boost emergency power. The wings could take drop tanks or bombs. Later production models were fitted with the bubble canopies installed on the Fw 190F. Efforts to up gun the 190D came to nothing. Several D-9s were converted to D-10 standard by installing the Jumo 213C engine, which permitted a 30mm cannon to fire through the propeller shaft and spinner. It did not go into production. Similarly, just seven prototypes of the D-11 were built, which had Jumo 213F engines, and were armed with two MG 151/20 cannon in the wing roots and two Mk 108s in the outer wing panels.

the F-3 was similar to the A-6. The F-9 was the last in the F series and was an alternative version of the F-8. The initial ground attack variant was the Fw 190F, followed by the Fw 190G-1 fighterbomber derived from the Fw 190A-5 but with a much greater bomb load. The Fw 190G-2 and G-3 were essentially the same but were equipped with Messerschmitt and Focke-Wulf wing racks respectively. Over 20,000 Fw 190s of all types were produced. When it went into combat in the autumn of 1941 thanks to its performance and

52-55-Combat-Zone-Hitlers-Allrounder-MA-0117.indd 54

The D-12 and D-13 were essentially ground attack aircraft. The proposed Fw 190E a joint fighter reconnaissance aircraft was abandoned. The Fw 190D-9 was a very fine aircraft and considered by many Luftwaffe pilots to be their finest fighter. However, it was not available in any great numbers until early 1945 and by this stage the Luftwaffe was greatly hampered by shortages of experience pilots and aviation fuel. The 190D had been preceded into service by the F-1, which appeared in early 1943 and was similar to the A-4. Likewise, the F-2 was related to the A-5 and

Although over 20,000 Fw 190 were built there were never enough available

agility over Russia it was dubbed the ‘Butcher Bird.’ The wide track undercarriage of the Fw 190 meant that it was much more forgiving in the hands of an inexperienced pilot than the Bf 109. Also as a result it was much better than the Bf 109 at operating from rough airfields. This made it ideal for the Eastern Front, however there were never enough available and most were kept back to defend the skies over the Third Reich. The Fw 190 served in North Africa from late 1942 until the German collapse in Tunisia the following year. It made its combat debut there on 16 November 1942 providing ground support. Over Tunisia it engaged American, British and French fighter aircraft with its pilots achieving a high number of kills. The A-5 introduced in early 1943 proved an excellent fighter. he Trumpeter CH-47A kit features a machine assigned to the US Army Aviation Test Board at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, and used for logistic evaluations. As usual I started with the cockpit, and decided to use the Eduard #SS314 detail set to improve this area. The kit seats are fairly simple affairs so I used some Evergreen strips to add the structure that holds them, and the etched seat belts did the rest. The interior was then painted with Gunze H-57 Aircraft Grey, and suitably detailed and weathered, and I added some scuff-marks using Humbrol Silver. I also decided to add the cables that are visible on the back of the instrument panel, and used thin several thicknesses of copper to achieve a very pleasing result. The rear cargo bay was simply painted, as it would not be visible on the finished model. With the interior completed I started on the fuselage, correcting a couple of moulding

56-59-Chinook-MA-0117.indd 56

errors along the way, and to strengthen the structure I glued some strips of Evergreen on the insides. I also added a little more detail to the engine intakes and prepared the cockpit glazing which needed a little bit of work once fixed onto the fuselage. This involves some careful masking of the clear parts, then sanding and polishing and then some re-scribing of some missing panel lines. Then came the tedious task of masking all of the windows, and once complete it was time for the fun part – painting. Firstly I added a little pre-shading, and then began to add thin layers of FS34087, I used the Gunze 304 mixed with 15-20% White, enough to leave the pre-shading visible at this stage. Next I applied a lighter shade on several panels with using Tamiya XF-4 and XF-57 to break the monotony of the green. Then I returned to my original colour and diluted this 70% with thinner and applied several layers until I achieved the

desired effect. Time to apply the Day-Glo panels and I decided to use the Gunze colour here, again applied in several thin layers. Finally I added the black surround to the cockpit glazing.

On the rotor shaft I used Tamiya XF-69 and several different oil paint washes, and some dry brushing on the edges. For the tyres I used Gunze H77, and a mixture of diluted H77 and H1 for a more ‘well worn’ look to the rubber. I then added a coat of Johnson’s ‘Future’ in preparation for the weathering stage. I then created a wash of Ivory Black (65%), Burnt Umber (30%) and White (5%) diluted with white spirit, and this was generously applied over the entire airframe. I let it dry to a semi-matt appearance and then removed most of it with a cloth using a smooth and circular motion to remove the excess. Then with another cloth use an even smoother motion, almost like polishing the surface to finish the effect. Now having the desired amount surface dirt needed,

another coat of ‘Future’ sealed everything in ready for the decals. Then it was time at add all the smaller parts that had been previously painted. I then detailed the engines with Alclad Aluminium and Jet Exhaust, and the build was complete. This was without a doubt, a very enjoyable project. MA The airframe responded well to a panel line wash

The decals went on very well

‘Faux-Falcon’ Mark Rourke looks at the F-16-Esque Mitsubishi F-2

T

he Mitsubishi F-2 was intended as a wholly indigenous multi-role fighter aircraft derived from the F-16, and manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Lockheed Martin for the Japan Air Self Defence Force. Production started in 1996 and the first of ninety-four aircraft entered service in 2000, and the F-2 saw the first use of the AESA radar in a combat aircraft. The F-2 came about when in October 1987, Japan selected the F-16 as the basis of its new ‘secondary fighter’ to replace their ageing

60-63-Faux-Falcon-MA-0117.indd 60

Mitsubishi F-1s and supplement their F-15Js and F-4EJs. The program involved technology transfer from the USA to Japan and viceversa, and the F-2 used the wing design of the proposed ‘F-16 Agile Falcon’, with newer avionics. The F-2 also had a larger tailplane, a larger air intake, a three-piece canopy, and drogue parachute and capability to fire ASM-1 or ASM-2 anti-shipping missiles. The aircraft is equipped with a General Electric F110-GE-129 afterburning turbofan engine and is fitted with the 20mm M61A1 Vulcan cannon, and can carry the AIM-7

Sparrow, Aim-9 Sidewinder and Mitsubishi AAM3 missiles. In June 2007, the F-2 made its first overseas deployment to Andersen AFB in Guam for joint US/Japan exercises, when the aircraft dropped live weapons for the first time. The F-2 program was controversial, because the unit cost, which including development, was roughly four times that of a Block 50/52 F-16, and the initial plan was for 141 F-2s, however, as mentioned only ninety-four aircraft were produced. hen the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) closed the deal for their second batch of F-5E/Fs under the ‘Peace Amazon II’ program, these Tigers came from the USAF’s Aggressors units. The FAB received eleven aircraft from the 64th and 65th Squadrons all wearing different camouflage patterns, and among them one F-5E, which received the Brazilian Air Force code FAB 4870 wore a scheme of Green FS 34079 and two Brown tones, FS 30140 and FS 20400. The FAB operated 4870 for eight years in this scheme, and during this time the radome was painted black, and FS 30219 was added to its camouflage. After almost ten years of service, the scheme

was standardised to overall Grey, and this was used until the beginning of the F-5EM upgrade programme. To represent FAB 4870 I used the excellent 1:48 AFV Club kit, adding some accessories and modifications. On the nose the original pitot tube was replaced by a new one made from a needle and cooper wire, and the communications antennas and sensors on the lower side of the nose and behind the cockpit were replaced by new ones made of plastic card. To further improve the kit I added an Aires detailing set for the cannon compartment, and on the gun compartment doors I added the straps that hold the lower door and also detailed the latches that lock the upper door. The cannon nozzle was replaced by another needle, and for even more detail an Aires cockpit set was installed. F-5s

have two auxiliary air intakes on the sides of the rear fuselage, which like a shutter, and I decided to use the Quickboost correction set here. The Sidewinder tips were also cut off and replaced with some clear acrylic for a better representation of the sensors. As mentioned above, FAB 4870 received various painting touch-ups during the eight years it sported the so-called ’Flogger’ scheme, so I decided to represent the aircraft in its middle term of its service life. All of the colours were my own mixes based on the Federal Standard catalogue and pictures of the aircraft in service. The Mr. Surfacer 1200 was initially applied on the entire model as a primer, and the other colours followed, always checking my reference pictures. I represented the addition of the Tan FS 30219 on the right wing tip and centre fuselage, and also added various paint touch-ups on left wing, rear fuselage, windshield frame and right side of the cockpit. The exhaust area was painted with Gaia Color Silver EX-07 with a Dark Grey wash picked out the panel lines. MA

MIG Masterclass

French Delta Striker George Roidis paints and weathers the Kinetic Mirage 2000D using Ammo of MIG products

T

he Kinetic kit goes together very well and there was not much more to report, so I was soon ready for the main event – painting and finishing.

Mirage 2000B/N/D Manufacturer: Kinetic Scale: 1:48 Kit Type: Plastic injection moulded Kit Number: 48032

e y The first stage is to add a primer coat, and I here used a mix of three colours. Using a primer you can detect any flaws on and prepare the surface for further painting

76-79-MIG-Master-French-Delta-MA-0117.indd 76

The next stage is to give add some pre-shading using A.MIG-0033 Rubber and Tyres

11/12/2016 15:23

The decals were then added, and I began the weathering stage with a mix of three washes in equal amounts, these being A.MIG-1616 Orange Brown, A.MIG-1611 Black Night and A.MIG-1614 Neutral Brown.

76-79-MIG-Master-French-Delta-MA-0117.indd 77

Now we can add the camouflage and I used a Dark Green and Dark Grey then added two coats of A.MIG-091 to seal everything in

77

The exhausts were an Aires set which were primed and then sprayed with various metallic shades

I applied the wash with a brush and allowed it to dry for two hours….

…..and then removed the excess with a cotton bud and some thinners…..

…..and here is the finished effect

The fuel tanks were painted with the same colours used on the aircraft, and chipping was done with A.MIG-2011 and some A.MIG-3002 Light Dust and A.MIG-3011 Airfield Dust pigments were applied

Another coat of varnish was then added

Streaking was then applied using A.MIG-1203 Streaking Grime in the direction of the airflow

I also added some heavy staining from the aircrafts exhausts over the wings, using a mix of pigment and thinners
