VANOS units, removing and installing (N12, N16, N18 engine) Intake camshaft VANOS solenoid valve: Disconnect Disconnect electrical electrical connector connector (A (A). • Remove Remove fastene fastenerr (B (B). • Remove solenoid valve valve (C (C). If necessar y, valves can be rotated in cylinder head to aid in removal and installation.

Exhaust camshaft VANOS solenoid valve: • Disconnect electrical connector. • Remove Remove fastene fastenerr (A (A). • Remove solenoid valve valve (B (B). If necessar y, valves can be rotated in cylinder head to aid in removal and installation.

Installation is the reverse of removal, making sure of the following: • Replace O-ring and coat lightly with oil. • Ensure valves valves are clean and free of dirt. Tightening torque VANOS solenoid to cylinder head (replace sealing O-ring)

VANOS units, removing and installing (N12, N16, N18 engine) Engine timing is adjusted when pistons are locked in 90° position. This is an updated procedure that eliminates using top dead center (TDC) when setting camshaft and c rankshaft correlation. Special tools and procedures are required to remove and install VANOS units and to time camshafts. — WARNING — To avoid personal injury, injury, be sure engine is cold before beginning the procedure. CAUTION —
• Disassembly, Disassembly, removal and assembly of camshafts or VANOS units without special tools poses the risk of damage: Valves Valves may be bent by contact with the piston crowns. • Throughout this procedure, unless otherwise specified, crankshaft and camshafts remain locked against rotation using MINI special tools.

Switch ignition OFF and remove key.

Disconnect negative (–) cable from battery. CAUTION —
• Prior to disconnecting the the battery, battery, read the battery battery disconnection cautions in 001 Warnings and Cautions. Cautions.

Raise vehicle and support safely. — WARNING — • Make sure vehicle is stable stable and well supported at all times. Use a professional automotive lift or jack stands. A floor jack is not adequate support.

Remove ignition coil cover. See See 020 020 Maintenance. Maintenance.

Remove spark plugs. See 020 See 020 Maintenance. Maintenance.

Remove cylinder head cover. See 113 Cylinder Head Removal and Installation. Installation.
Using MINI special tool 11 9 590, 590, secure crankshaft in 90° piston position. Tool Tool remains in place during entire repair process. CAUTION —
• Holes used to balance engine engine and for aligning aligning engine can be mixed up. Verify Verify engine is in 90° position by viewing piston position through spark plug hole.
Remove fasteners (A (A), then remove timing chain slide rail ( arrow). arrow).

Remove timing chain tensioner (A (A). Be prepared to catch any dripping oil in a shop towel.
