1.0 OBJECTIVE This method statement to outline the method statements which brick carries out works until completion.

2.0 SCOPE The method statement shall apply for all brick works on building and civil works.

5.0 PLANT, MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT The following machinery and equipments can be used for the brickworks. Mobile cranes forklift, wheelbarrow, spirit levels, measuring tapes, masonry nails, spatulas, bucket and etc as applicable.

6.0 HANDLING AND STORAGE OF MATERIAL Handling:  Unloading of palette bricks using mobile crane on site.  Co-ordinate to comply with construction schedule and arrange for off the ground, under cover storage locations. Do not load any building area beyond safe design load limits.  Protect the structure and works of works of other trades during delivery storage, handling and execution of the brickwork.  Provide safe and adequate equipment to execute the work, hoisting, scaffolding, tools, plant and other equipment required for proper completion of the works Storage: 

Deliver and store the brick on pallets on site. Store away from roads and parking areas. If not used immediately, cover with plastic sheet adequately weighted down. Keep block protected from bitumen, concrete, mortar and other materials, which may cause staining.

 Stack on a dry level surface in a manner that permits free air circulation. Prevent contact with soil, clinker and ashes.

7.0 PREPARATORY WORKS 7.1 Materials to be used a bricks, mortar (cement, sand), damp prove course (DPC) and ex met. 7.2 Obtain brick material approval from consultant / client prior a purchase 7.3 Obtain relevant approved construction drawings from architectural consultant or structural consultant 7.4 Set out the locations and positions for brick with reference lines. Any discrepancy to be ironed out before proceeding with the brick works.

7.5 Liaise with other trade contractor to confirm allowance for openings provision. Plan and locate service pipe sleeves or openings as shown on the construction drawings. 7.6 Carry out receiving inspection of bricks received as per Inspection and test plan. Use receiving inspection Checklist. 7.7 Brick testing shall be carrying out up on client request and all the test report shall be submit accordingly. 7.8 Mortar mix ratio is 1: 2  - 3 (Portland cement: sand) or as specified. Gauge box shall be utilized to obtain the specified mix. 7.9 The mortars are to be carefully mixed upon properly constructed timber platforms and prepared in small quantities as required. The sand and cement are to be measured by volume is specially prepared and approved gauge boxes for each material, size internally 1 cubic meter and thorough mixed dry, the mixture is then to be wetted by pouring water upon it through a watering can rose and again mixed by turning over three times. 7.10

Only sufficient water shall be added to provide a pliable mix

7.11

Care should be taken to make the mixture of the right consistency

7.12

No mortar that had developed initial setting shall be knocked-up for reuse mortar

7.13

No mortar plasticizer shall be used unless with written permission of the Architect. The plasticizer shall be of an approved type and used strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

7.14

Concrete surface shall be level to receive brick wall accordingly.

8.0 WORKS METHODOLOGY 8.1 Laying by the brick 8.1.1

Room position alignment and room dimension shall be check properly. Wall shall be meet at right angle. ( not more than 4mm for over 300mm )

8.1.2

For brickwork the ground floor beam or slab, prior to lay any brick, DPC bituminous layer shall be laid for the whole stretch. Lay DPC horizontally in continuous step with 150mm lapping for every joint. After complete the application of the bitumen lay on layer of the DPC sheet on top of the bitumen

8.1.3

Lay the first course of stretcher bricks in the mortar. Beginning with the second brick, apply mortar to the head joint end of each brick, and then shove the bricks into place firmly so that the mortar is squeezed out of all side of the joints. Use a level to check the course for correct height, and then place it on top to make sure that all the bricks are plumb and level.

8.1.4

Make sure that the joint thicknesses correspond with chalk marks. To move a brick, tap it gently with a trowel handle. Trim off any excess mortar for the sides of the bricks.

8.1.5

Install of dowel bar 6mm  @ 450mm long shall be provided at the concrete column. Dowel bar interval between two points recommended minimum 600mm.

8.1.6

Installation of the first layer of ex-met shall be installed at the 2 nd row of bricks layers and continue ex-met shall be laid at every 4 courses

8.1.7

Brick shall be wetted before laying process

8.1.8

Evenness and vertically of the wall shall be check progressively during the laying process.

8.1.9

Proper bonding and keying shall be provided at corner/ intersection at every 4 courses.

THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION & COMPLETION OF 50 UNITS 3-STOREY SEMI-DETACHED HOUSES, 10 UNITS 2-STOREY SEMI-DETACHED HOUSES AND ASSOCIATED WORKS AT PLOT 8R7, PRECINCT 8, PUTRAJAYA 8.1.10 Brick shall be laid in 45 diagonally at the top layer of the top layer of the brick wall / below soffit beam.

8.1.11 Concrete stiffener shall be providing at every 3m of the brick wall. 8.1.12 All floors walls surrounding bathrooms to be constructed above 150mm high R.C floor beams as prevention from dampness to engineered timber floors. 8.1.13 Throw another mortar line along side the first course, and then begin laying the second or backup, course. Use the level to make sure that the two courses are equal height, but do not mortar them together. All brickwork shall be built in level courses which no 4 courses to rise more than 300mm. 8.1.14 The beginning to lay the second course cut two bricks to half-length. To cut a brick. Lay it on the ground and score it all the way around using a hammer and brick set. Break the brick in two with a sharp blow to the brick. 8.1.15 The two half bricks is used to begin the second course. This will ensure that the first two courses are staggered for structural purposes. 8.1.16 As the mortar begins to set, it is best to stop laying bricks and use a concave jointer to finish the mortar joints. Work along the vertical joints first: this will help as improve the appearance of the wall. 8.1.17 The types of bricklaying bond at party wall and ordinary wall is “ Running Bond’. Section 04200 page 7 iteam 9.

8.2 Mortar joint 8.2.1

Mortar joint 10mm, level and uniform in width.

8.2.2

Maintain vertical joints in alternate course in line, throughout the entire height. Centre joint on midpoint of unit below.

8.2.3

Lay brick in full bed of mortar covering units webs and face shells, thoroughly butter vertical joints and flush end voids full of mortar. Do not shift or tap units after mortar has taken initial set. Where adjustment must be made after mortar has started to set, remove mortar and replace with fresh supply.

8.2.4

Where joint are concealed in walls and where walls are to receive insulation, air/vapour barriers or other applied finishing material except paint or similar thin finishing coating, strike joints flush.

8.3 Filling in the leads 8.3.1

Stretch a mason’s line between the completed leads, then begin laying the outer course. The line should be approximately 1/6” away from the bricks and flush with their top edges as shown. Work from both ends of the wall toward the middle. When reach the final brick, mortar both sides of it and push straight down to squeeze the mortar out from the joints.

8.3.2

Move the mason’s line to the back of the wall and begin laying the backup course. Works to be check with level for accuracy and finish the joints with the concave jointer when they are almost dry.

8.3.3

The fifth, or top course is laid exactly like the first. Move the mason’s line up, throw a mortar line and begin laying the bricks. Apply a generous amount of mortar on the face of each brick, and then shove the brick firmly into place.

Ex met to be lay before proceeding to the next layer course. This step is compulsory to ensure the brick wall strength.

8.4 Load – bearing masonry 8.4.1

Provide at least 400mm of 100% solid masonry under bearing for lintels, extending 200mm beyond each side of bearing. Refer to details on structural drawings, which shall govern.

8.5 Lintels 8.5.1

Provide bond beam lintel block over all opening walls unless otherwise indicated for placement of reinforcing and concrete by Section 03300 (Specification)

8.5.2

For opening over 2100mm, install lintels as detailed to the structural drawings or as detailed by the structural engineer.

8.6 Installation of door frames 8.6.1

Door frame will be set plumb, square and at proper locations by Section 06100, including anchorage of door jambs to floor slab, and required temporary bracing and spreaders to maintain alignment while masonry works being erected.

8.6.2

Set all anchors between frames and masonry and fill voids between metal frames and masonry wall with grout.

9.0 SAFETY REQUIREMENT 9.1

All workers must wearing proper P.P.E.i.e helmet, safety boot, vest

For 1st floor slab all worker to wear safety harness

9.3

Do not use defect tool i.e broken hoe

9.4

After all works finish, all workers shall do the housekeeping

9.5

All the construction material shall be stored properly at designated area.
