Mesocosm Aim: To create a self-sustaining terrestrial mesocosm Nziza Richard - August 30, 2016

Introduction
 A mesocosm is an experiment that is used as a model of a larger ecosystem. It is described as a controlled experiment, as it is effectively a natural environment under controlled conditions. It allows scientists to investigate the reaction of organisms to environmental change, such as temperature, carbon dioxide or pH levels, as well as investigate cause-and-effect relationships in ecosystems. A sealed mesocosm has no access to external sources except for sunlight, which is converted to energy through of photosynthesis. Therefore, mesocosms are entirely selfsustaining. In order for it to survive appropriate necessary materials as well as organisms must be chosen. A terrestrial ecosystem is found on land. Biotic factors include a wide range of organisms, both plants and animals, whilst abiotic factors include natural landforms and climate.

Variables: Independent - materials/plants/size of jar, location Dependent - temperature, humidity, condensation, growth of the plant

One of the main components needed is soil. The best choice would me soil with minerals as well as other essentials, therefore the soil must fertile in order for plants to grow. Another important factor is the plants, they carry out photosynthesis, which results in the production of food as well as oxygen, and essential gas for organisms to survive. Water is also another important key component, it is vital to the survival of the plants. In order to make the mesocosm self sufficient. Seeds can be planted to make plants. The organism that is most likely to survive and sustain itself is a worm, therefore I will put worms into the ecosystem. I will avoid putting other organisms that may be predators towards the worms. I will also avoid putting in too many consumers that can’t be supported by the ecosystem. Pebbles may also used to make a solid in the bottom of the container.

A large plastic container will be used. Pebbles will be placed at the bottom. Then the sand will be mixed with water and placed inside the container. Then more non dampened soil will be placed. Seeds will then be planted, and watered. 2 worms will then be placed. Once all the materials are put in place and the ecosystem is set, then the container will be permanently sealed. Observations will be carried out every week to examine any changes. Also to measure how long the mesocosm will last.
