SD#58 five-year strategic plan

The parents of MSS students received an automated telephone message last week, regarding the Board of Education of School District #58 Nicola Similkameen’s 5-year strategic priorities plan. And they're seeking public input. To support and oversee this planning process, they’ve established a District Strategic Planning Advisory Committee with representatives from partner groups and the public that will: review & update SD #58’s mission& values statements; develop a planning process & methodology for determining strategic priorities; and compile a draft plan to present to the Board, Superintendent, partner groups and the public. This draft would finally go to a Community Voice meeting for input prior to finalization. The SD58 website is the vehicle to provide key information — surveys, meeting dates, timelines, info documents used in the process, summaries of meetings, and an opportunity to send written submissions to the Committee. The first opportunity is to participate in their online survey which is available until March 10. The Community Voice on Education in SD 58 meeting will be held on April 15 at 6:30pm, location still to be determined. FMI www.sd58.bc.ca

By-election improprieties alleged

A scrutineer for one of the candidates in last month’s municipal by-election has gone to authorities in Victoria with complaints of flawed processes by the Chief & Deputy Election Officers. while not disputing the validity of the outcome of the vote (Neil Menard had a clear lead over the next candidate), they are calling for an investigation into election violations under the Local Government Act. At issue are violations to the scrutineer’s rights & responsibilities, and voter privacy. At closing on the general voting day, scrutineers & candidates were ejected from the room, while the LGA states that they are entitled to be present while counting procedures are underway, to object to the acceptance or rejection of a ballot. Also, the voting place (the same small room as the advance voting) was so cramped that places for only 3 scrutineers were possible. And those spots were not able to be placed behind the voter identification tables, as required for their duties. Voting day was scheduled for a date that conflicted with a popular community fundraising event which had been booked at the Civic Centre — the usual poll location — a year in advance. But even Council Chambers would have provided a better location scrutiny & privacy. There is also concern that privacy was not adequately provided for voters. The pen used to mark the ballots bled through the page and was easily observed by anyone who looked. The scrutineer says that secrecy sleeves should have been made available, as per Merritt’s own By-law No. 2157, 2013 (Automated Voting Machines Authorization Bylaw).

Airline Rage As a guy takes his seat on an airplane, he is surprised to find a parrot strapped in next to him. After taking off, the flight attendant comes around to serve the passengers on the plane. The guy asks the flight attendant for a coffee and the parrot squawks: "And get ME a Coke...NOW!" The flight attendant, flustered by the parrot's attitude, brings back a Coke for the parrot. However, she forgets the coffee for the guy. As the guy points this out, the parrot drains his glass and screams:"Get me another Coke or I'll really create a scene!" Quite upset, the attendant comes back shaking, with another Coke, but still no coffee. Irritated at her forgetfulness, the man decides to try the parrot's approach. "I've asked you twice for a coffee. Go and get it right now, or I'll create a scene that will make HIS look like a Victorian tea party!" The next moment, both the guy and the parrot are grabbed and thrown out of the emergency exit by two burly security guards. Hurtling towards earth, the parrot turns to him and says: "You're pretty bold for a guy who can't fly!"
