For example Don’t you watch a movie with full concentration? Do you hear the knock at the door or the telephone ring while watching your favourite TV serial? The major reason behind total concentration is ‘interest’. Yes, it is our interest in a film, in a match or in a TV serial that helps us to concentrate. The interest arrests our attention and we are able to concentrate. We cannot concentrate on the areas that we are not interested in. For example, the long answers that you have to learn, you find them uninteresting and spiceless. Hence, your concentration wanders and you cannot learn even after hours of struggle. Now the question arises, how do we feel interested in certain subjects and find others uninteresting. To know the answer to this question, you will have to answer a simple question. Why do people start crying while watching a movie? Yes, you guessed it right; they get carried away in the rush of emotions. They start feeling that those heart felt emotions on the screen are their own feelings. The mental and the emotional state of the narrator gets connected to their feelings and a state of identification is achieved.

I daresay that even after many years, those moments are still firmly etched in your memory. Annual functions are organised every year in schools and colleges, but you would remember only that particular function clearly in which you also participated. As a viewer you may forget the programme, but the one in which you were a participant will be secure in your memory for ever because you were a part of that event. Those moments have become a part of you. Just imagine for a while that you are going on a road. Suddenly a ball comes in front of you. It is possible that you may not even notice it. But if you turn suddenly and spot your younger brother playing amongst the children at the corner, you would feel interested in the game. Chain Method How many of you have seen the film Zanjeer. Do you remember the hero and the heroine? Even if you have not seen the film, you still know the meaning of the word zanjeer. Don’t you? It is a chain, a ‘link’ that connects two different things; let us take the example of a cycle. When you start paddling, you can see that it is the chain that transfers the energy from one wheel to the other. Anything that physically links two different things together is called a chain. Prisoners are also made to wear chains. The rules of association and imagination shall be used in the chain method as well.

Let us suppose you are reading and revising sitting in your study room, or for that matter, sitting anywhere – in the house, in the car or in the lawn. Now close your eyes for a while and imagine that you are in the kitchen. Try to visualize how and where different things are placed in the kitchen. Where is the rack for dishes, where is the gas-stove etc. Now, imagine the setting of your drawing room. I am sure you can easily visualise all the details. This happens because the entire setting of the drawing room is there in your mind. It is so familiar that you see the entire room in your mind in the fraction of a second. Memory Picture: I made a memory picture with ‘MLK’. I imagined that when I reach his house and knock at the door, the door opens and I find Rajesh bathing in ‘milk’. Rajesh said, “Don’t forget I live in E Block.” If I had not used my technique, probably I could have forgotten that Rajesh lived in ‘E’ block but I went back to my childhood alphabet books and made a mental note of E for ‘elephant’. Memory Picture: Again I created a rather funny mind picture. I imagined that Rajesh is transformed into an elephant after drinking milk. I go and shake hands with his trunk. Do you still think that after this kind of visualization, you are still likely to forget? Come, let us conduct an experiment. Imagine the face of a friend. Presume that you have stuck an elephant trunk on his nose with fevicol. Now what will you see when you meet him next? Obviously his ‘trunk’. A few exceptions in the Kalia Memory Improving Methods

Kalia Memory Improving Methods are extremely effective and result oriented and it does not take more than 2 to 3 seconds to put them to use. But at times you may come across some words and events for which you cannot create a memory picture easily. For such words we will have to devise a slightly different technique. For example: 6- We relate 6 with ‘G’ but now 6 is ‘J’ also. As the mirror image of 6 resembles J. 8- We relate 8 with ‘V’ but now 8 is ‘V’ and ‘f’ both. As 8 is having two loops like small f. 9- We relate 9 with ‘P’ but when we reverse ‘P’ we get ‘b’. So 9 is P and b. 1- 1 is related to‘t’ but we can also relate it to‘d’. So 1 is t,d. Now give yourself a test and see if you have learnt to join these digits with other consonants or not-

Memory Picture: Now, let us create a memory picture to remember this phone number. Imagine that P.M. (Prime Minister) goes to a DeN where he is welcomed by an Officer of the NaVy. But if you remember them once and get in the habit of using them constantly, you will be able to befriend these codes and they will never betray you. The moment someone says 55 you will straightaway, get a mind picture of ‘Lalloo’ and 90 will immediately remind you of 'Bus'. If you take my advice I would tell you that you should use these memory codes everyday. Learn two phone numbers everyday with the help of the memory codes. After one month you will have memorised 60 phone numbers and the continuous use of memory codes will automatically make you practice and remember the codes too.

How to learn a Map? In order to learn a map accurately, draw lines in the outline of the maps from top to bottom and from left to right. This will divide the outline in equal squares. Now, let us number each square horizontally and vertically as well. Each square can now be identified by a representative number. You can see the box no. 34 that is shown in bold in the opposite picture. You have to learn that groundnut is produced in this region. If we apply Kalia method the picture that emerges for 34 is Amir (Khan). To remember that groundnut is found in box No. 34 we have to create a Memory Picture with Amir and groundnut. We can imagine Amir is eating groundnuts. If it is asked in the examination, where groundnut is produced, you will immediately recall Amir i.e. Box No. 34. In the examination, there is no need to draw lines on the map; you can find your box no. with the help of a ruler as well. Here, you have been shown the map of Africa. This can help you learn different crops and minerals of Africa. First of all you have to see where a particular crop or mineral is found whether it is towards the left or the right, towards the upper or the lower portion. For example, manganese is found in box No. 01, 31, 66, and 56. In the same way, there are some minerals that are found only in one box. Come, let us learn the map. 151

The title of this chapter sounds weird. You must be surprised and finding it rather funny. But this method is so powerful in itself that it can solve many of your problems in the blinking of an eyelid. How!!! You would find this out in a short while. Let us first talk about our forgetfulness. Often we are not able to remember the routes and ways of a new place. As an example, let us talk about your friends. A friend tells you that he has recently moved his residence. He explains the route to you and says

Go straight from here and then turn left from the flyover. As you go a little further, you will find a chemist’s shop. Turn right from there and as you go a little ahead there will be a police station, turn left from there. There is a peepal tree behind the third house in the adjoining street. Turn right from there. Now come straight. You will see a pan shop. My house is towards the back side of the seventh house from this pan shop. The house is on the main road. What do you think of these directions? His house number is 3471. Isn’t the way rather cumbersome? At that time, you must have nodded your head and told your friend that you have understood the way. But when you started from home you were confused on the very first turn, if you were to turn left or right from the flyover. The fact of the matter is that human brain can remember and memorise only those things which it can picturise. Although road maps and routes are made through imaginary pictures only like the pan shop, behind the hospital, in front of the Hanuman Mandir yet words like left and right that are used with these landmarks lead to confusion. Whenever we go to a new place and ask the way, while some one is explaining to you, you do not even want to pay attention because you know that even after you have heard the entire route you will not be able to remember it. So you have to stop to ask the way at five of six places. In the road map words like left, right, U turn do not get any Memory Picture. If in our mind we create a picture of these three we will be able to solve this problem to a great extent.

You have to turn left from here (Make a Memory Picture that the show room is filled with sweaters made of leaves). As you come a little further you will see some furniture shops. You have to take a U turn from here (Imagine that every one in the furniture shop is standing with umbrellas). As you come a little further you would find a shed where advocates sit. Form here you have to turn right. (Imagine that the lawyers are wearing red coats and holding red files in their hands). As you come a little ahead you will see a restaurant. You have to turn left from here. (Create a Memory Picture that people are eating on huge leaves in the restaurants.) Coming straight from here you will find the shop of a mechanic. In the same manner you must have realised by now that ignorance about these three symbols had kept you away from learning road maps. Do you remember ‘Ek Machhar Admi ko hijra bna deta hai’ (One mosquito can turn a man to a eunuch). Yashwant -Nana Patekar! Do you recall anything? Absolutely right! A Single mosquito can destroy ones manhood. Whether we talk of a road map, chemical reactions or indulge in long discussions about mathematical equations, we would find that small reasons lead to big problems. Even Arundhati Roy said that it is the God of small things after all. How easily our Ek Machhar Method made you over power the three mosquitoes of the road map. If you go on practicing like this, you will be so familiar with these symbols that you will be able to remember road maps with remarkable ease without a hitch. In every subject we do have some mosquitoes bothering us here and there. Let us talk about Maths. Just a small mark of addition or subtraction has the power to make or mar your paper. In the coming chapter we are going to take on the mosquitoes of mathematics with the help of Ek Machhar Method. Often the students of Mathematics dread remembering formulae because when you look at them they seem so similar. Hence it is very difficult for the mind to absorb them correctly. But these techniques can surely simplify the points that confuse you. These techniques can also recognize the difference between two formulae. You can connect it to the knowledge of your subject. We can not drink bourn vita alone without milk, in the same way we can not use memory technique at the place of the subject itself but along with it. Now let us see another example: Sin 3 A = 3 Sin A – 4 Sin3 A Cos 3A = 4 Cos3 A – 3 Cos A There is a hair line difference in these two equations. You can get confused Sin 3 A = 3 Sin A or 4 Sin3 A. If you memorise the first equation properly the second one become automatically clear because the students of mathematics know that in these formulae Sin and Cos equation are reverse. We shall make use of some codes.
