ATILIM UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MECHATRONICS ENGINEERING MECE 202 PRINCIPLES OF MECHATRONICS DESIGN Spring 2012-2013 DESIGN PROJECT Design and Construction of a Simple Mechatronic System

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT Each design team will design and produce a small-size motorized vehicle with some mechatronic features to perform several tasks. These tasks will be assigned for specified design periods and there will be a “Test Session” at the end of each design period. Performance of each design will be measured and graded for each test, based on the pre-specified design criteria. The following design criteria are valid for all tests: a) b) c) d) e)

A design report should be submitted on May 21, 2013. Format of the report will be available on the MECE 202 page of ACMS Moodle. Each team is expected to give an oral presentation on their design. Presentation date and duration for each presentation will be announced.

PROJECT GRADING The Design Project Grade will determine 60% of the overall course grade for MECE 202. Design Project Grade will be composed of the following components: Design Performance Design Report Weekly Reports Oral Presentation

30% (for the team) 10% (for the team) 10% (for the individual team members) 10% (for individual team members)

“Design Performance” grade will be given based on the tests. A new design function and/or requirement will be added to the design specifications of the previous test. In order to get a “Design Performance” grade, designs (vehicles) are expected to have an ID plate (see the General Rules below) and to be operating properly during the tests. Properly operating designs are evaluated based on the pre-specified design criteria for each test. The design(s) with the best performance for any design criterion will get a maximum grade and the design(s) with the worst performance will get a minimum grade. All of the other designs will be graded based on linear interpolation. Maximum and minimum grades will be announced before each test. If a design does not have an ID plate and/or it is not operating properly in any test, then its “design performance” grade will be “0” (zero) for that test only.

GENERAL RULES 1. It is not allowed to change the already developed design concept(s) of the previous tests. 2. Specifications for standard MECE 202 components (electric motors, processors, sensors etc.) will be given and design teams are required to use the specified components. Design teams are not allowed to use standard MECE 202 components with different specifications. 3. Design teams are expected to get written approval for all standard components including design-specific ones (gears, bearings, springs, sensors etc.). 4. All non-standard components (structural members, shafts, links, connection parts, wheels etc.) should be designed by the teams and produced in the MECE Laboratory and/or in the Machine Shop of ATILIM University during MECE 202 laboratory hours, using proper manufacturing documentation. 5. Design teams are expected to use Catia, AutoCAD and similar CAD software for manufacturing documentation. All manufacturing documents (workshop drawings, subassembly drawings, assembly drawings) should be prepared using proper engineering drawing techniques. 6. An ID plate should be prepared and attached properly on each vehicle. Papers or paperlike materials will not be accepted for ID plates (cardboard etc.). The ID plate should contain the following information: MECE 202 Principles of Mechatronics Design 2012-2013 Design Project Team Name: Team Members: Name Surname, Name Surname, Name Surname TASK 1 Test 1 Week: 25-29 March 2013 (Date and time will be announced) Important Note: Vehicles without a proper ID plate will not be allowed to take Test 1 and they will directly get “0” (zero) grade from Test 1. The vehicle will start linear motion at the “START” position, it will move straight in a path which is 60 cm wide and 3 m long and the vehicle should carry load. The vehicle is required to stop when it senses a black line (4 cm in thickness) on the floor. Then, the vehicle is expected to return back to the start position. Dimensions of the path are represented in Figure 1. A properly operating vehicle is expected to travel at least 30 cm in the path and carry a minimum of 1-kg load.

TASK 2 Test 2 Week: 22-26 April 2013 (Date and time will be announced) Important Note: Vehicles without a proper ID plate will not be allowed to take Test 2 and they will directly get “0” (zero) grade from Test 2. The vehicle will start linear motion at the “START” position, it will move straight in a path (Path 1) which is 60 cm wide and 3 m long. The vehicle is required to stop when it senses a black line (4 cm in thickness) on the floor at the end of Path 1 and turn the lights on. Then, the vehicle is required to continue its motion by following the curved black path (Path 2). The lights will be on during path following. There will be an object on the path (position of the object will be arbitrary) and the vehicle is required to pick up the object on the way, continue its motion with the object. The vehicle is required to stop at the 4-cm black line at the end of Path 2, put the object on the ground and turn the lights off. The environment for Test 2 is represented in Figure 2. A properly operating vehicle is expected to travel all through Path 1 and at least 50 cm in Path 2, to pick up the object on Path 2.

TASK 3 Test 3 Week: 13-17 May 2013 (Date and time will be announced) Important Note: Vehicles without a proper ID plate will not be allowed to take Test 3 and they will directly get “0” (zero) grade from Test 3. The environment for Test 3 is represented in Figure 3. The vehicle will start its motion at the “START” position and it will follow the curved black path (Path 2). The vehicle is required to stop, when it senses a black line (4 cm in thickness) on the floor at the end of Path 2 and starts producing a sound. Then, the vehicle will pick up the object on the way and will climb an inclined path (Path 3) which is 60 cm wide and 130 cm long. The vehicle continuously produces sound during the motion in Path 3. The vehicle is required to stop at the 4-cm black line at the end of Path 3, stops emitting sound and leave the object in the basket in front of the inclined plane. A properly operating vehicle is expected to travel at least 50 cm in Path 2, pick up the object and travel at least 30 cm in Path 3 with the object.
