Lighter is better Weight reduction solutions Accelerating, braking, turning - these elements all characterize a vehicle’s road performance, and all are powerfully influenced by the overall weight of the bike. Lighter bikes, in general, perform better — not only on the road, but also in terms of fuel efficiency. As a supplier of high-performance engineering plastics, SABIC Innovative Plastics offers several innovative alternatives to conventional metal solutions — without compromising style or safety.

fiber or other fillers to significantly reduce friction and wear between moving parts. Lubricomp compounds can help extend product life and reduce noise from moving parts.

LNP* Verton* compounds provide excellent options for metal replacement. Verton compounds use long-glass fibers to reinforce base resins, such as polyamide, polypropylene, PBT, PC/ABS, or other engineering thermoplastics, depending on application needs. Long-glass fiber technology provides these compounds with both improved stiffness and improved impact over similar materials with standard short-glass additives. Verton compounds also deliver excellent toughness, strength and stiffness across wide temperature extremes.

Replacing glass windshields with lightweight Lexan Margard* sheet not only helps reduce overall weight, it may also help your bike’s design achieve a lower center of gravity. A proprietary hardcoat from SABIC Innovative Plastics helps protect Lexan Margard sheet’s high optical quality from the effects of abrasion, chemicals and weathering.

These properties, combined with light weight and exceptional UV and corrosion resistance, make Verton compounds a promising alternative to metal suspension components, seat frames, and other semi-structural applications. High heat and flame resistance are available from our Ultem* and LNP Thermocomp* product lines, which provide lightweight but sturdy options for engine and muffler components. For gears and other components requiring enhanced wear resistance, SABIC Innovative Plastics offers LNP Lubricomp* compounds, which combine engineering resins with PTFE, silicone, aramid

10 SABIC Innovative Plastics

Further weight reduction is possible through HydroPlast* technology, which fuses a backbone of load-bearing hydroform steel with sturdy, lightweight engineering thermoplastics. The plastic components serve to integrate the assembly and to transfer load to the steel. HydroPlast technology offers excellent potential for seat frames and other hydroformed structural members.

Simplicity is better No-paint solutions Molded-in color and visual effects SABIC Innovative Plastics no-paint materials technology offers a value-added solution to manufacturers who wish to reduce or eliminate paint processes from their operations, potentially lowering VOC emissions and manufacturing costs. Our no-paint technology contributes to highly aesthetic parts, with excellent resistance to weather, scratches and chemicals. SABIC Innovative Plastics portfolio of nopaint systems encompasses a variety of resin technologies, but our Lexan* SLX, Geloy* XTW, and Xenoy* grades best represent the value they offer. Lexan SLX PC and Geloy XTW ASA resins, in particular, are excellent choices for exterior body panels that would benefit from a beautiful highgloss finish and best-in-class weatherability. Validation of Geloy XTW resin includes accelerated weathering tests, as well as two years of outdoor exposure studies in Florida and Arizona. All tests indicate that the material will exhibit a prolonged delay in aesthetic shift after five to seven years. Similar testing on Lexan SLX resin indicates the material’s excellent appearance can withstand weathering for up to 10 years.

A third no-paint solution, Xenoy PC/PBT thermoplastic alloy, provides a blend of thermal stability, mechanical strength, and strong resistance to chemicals. Originally developed for automotive applications, Xenoy resin offers a more limited color portfolio for unpainted cladding, fairings, and instrument panels. SABIC Innovative Plastics also offers its range of Visualfx* resins to provide plastic parts with unique aesthetic effects, such as metalics, sparkle, and diamond. Compatible with PC, ABS, and other plastics, our Visualfx resin technology can be designed to deliver weatherability, scratch resistance and other performance properties.

Both resins are also compatible with multi-layer sheet technology. Geloy XTW resin can be extruded into a multi-layer sheet system with a substrate of sturdy ABS, and/or acrylic as a protective cap layer. Lexan SLX resin provides similar advantages when coextruded with PC-based resins. Multi-layer systems incorporating either Geloy XTW or Lexan SLX can provide high aesthetics, excellent chemical resistance, strong stiffness, and higher recyclability.

11 SABIC Innovative Plastics

A vibrant union Ducati 999 SABIC Innovative Plastics worked with Ducati to create the exterior body of the Ducati 999 sport bike. Ducati selected Xenoy* resin for the remarkable balance of properties it provided the Ducati 999’s fairings, housings and instrument panel. The result was vibrantly colored, highly weatherable exterior parts. In addition, Xenoy resin provided parts with excellent resistance to chemical attack and superior impact performance.

SABIC Innovative Plastics 13

Efficiency is better No-paint solutions In-mold decoration In addition to painting operations, SABIC Innovative Plastics advanced materials technology can reduce or eliminate other secondary manufacturing steps, such as applying adhesive decals or masking for paint. Our solution: several SABIC Innovative Plastics resins compatible with in-mold decoration technology. In-mold decoration prints and forms a plastic film and applies a protective polymer overlayer, effectively creating and decorating parts in one shot. Its streamlined process not only reduces costs for secondary operations, materials, and labor, it can also cut inventory expenses by requiring resin of a single color.

Lexan, Lexan SLX, and Xylex* thermoplastic films are all compatible with in-mold decoration, and also provide excellent resistance to abrasion and chemicals. Lexan films, in particular, offer outstanding gloss combined either with excellent colorability or crystal clear transparency. Lexan SLX resin adds best-in-class weatherability with retention of color and gloss for 10 years. Xylex resin can provide parts with an added degree of chemical resistance. For added structural strength, all of these films can be bonded to Cycoloy* ABSpolycarbonate resin. The relatively low cost to print ink on film offers manufacturers an efficient method to produce multiple products with different logos, colors, or images. Plus, because graphics are sealed behind a hard film, their detail and color remain clear and vibrant long after the bike rolls off the line.

14 SABIC Innovative Plastics

Flexibility is better Primerless solutions In addition to improving performance on the street, SABIC Innovative Plastics advanced materials help improve performance on the manufacturing line. Our conductive Noryl* GTX PPO/PA grades can enable no-primer painting operations, both for online and offline paint operations.

By eliminating primers and reducing over-spraying and paint waste, this specialty grade may help improve productivity and reduce operating costs. Other potential benefits include the ability to coat plastic and metal parts on the same paint line, excellent color matches between metal and plastics and reduced VOC emissions. Blending nylon and PPE resin, Noryl GTX resins can withstand the high heat of the powder coating process. Combined with its electrostatic-coat capability and conductivity, the material can improve paint transfer capability. Noryl GTX resins also demonstrate excellent performance in dimensional stability, chemical resistance, impact strength and flex modulus. Higher impact resistance is available from our Noryl GTX (PPO/PA) and PPX (PPO/PP) grades. These characteristics, coupled with Noryl GTX resins’ inherently low weight, impact strength and chemical resistance, offer a potential high-performance alternative to metal parts. Candidate applications include body panels, exhaust pipe covers and saddlebags.

15 SABIC Innovative Plastics

16 SABIC Innovative Plastics

Clarity is better Rider safety solutions Rider safety begins with prevention, and SABIC Innovative Plastics offers several high-performance materials designed to maintain visibility and road performance under adverse conditions. Lexan* Margard* polycarbonate sheet and films, for example, provide a durable alternative to glass or acrylic for both motorcycle and scooter windshields. In addition to Lexan resin’s high impact and clarity, Margard sheet offers a proprietary hard surface coating, which provides strong resistance to abrasion and weathering. Plus, the material will neither shatter nor splinter, greatly reducing the risk of injury during an accident. Lexan Margard sheet loses none of these qualities when thermoformed, making it an excellent candidate for increasingly popular spherically shaped windshield designs. Used for astronaut helmets, Lexan EXL PC resin also is a natural choice for the structural components of helmets. The material offers excellent impact protection against flat or sharp objects, even at temperatures well below the freezing point. As apparel, Lexan resin offers other benefits. In addition to its low weight, it offers designers the flexibility to create eye-catching designs that will attract the attention of consumers. SABIC Innovative Plastics’ optical quality grades of Lexan offer superb eye protection against UV rays with wavelengths shorter than 400 nm. Visors may be treated with a scratch-resistant coating.
