Writing I. New employee announcement II. Language point:conjuctions III. Speculative job appliction letter IV. Beginning and endingletters

I. NEW EMPLOYEE ANNOUNCEMENT These sample employee announcements allow you to welcome your new employee graciously and publicly. The employee announcements tell coworkers what the new employee will do and his or her job title. The employee announcements let other employees know who will mentor the new employee. The employee announcement may tell coworkers something about the new employee, but it can be as simple as announcing that the new employee is starting and the date. A couple of facts about the new employee will give the employee's new coworkers the opening and the opportunity to start conversations with the new employee about common interests. The best new employee announcements also share the employee's work location and how other employees can reach him or her. The very best share a picture so employees can recognize the new employee when they see him or her.

Ask the Employee to Share Interesting Facts About Their Life A positive way to introduce a new employee is to share a paragraph the new employee has written that expresses three-four interesting tidbits about the new employee that will also draw in coworkers. Does the employee love cats? Share it. Does the employee run in 10k+ races? Share it. Does the employee volunteer in the local food kitchen? Does the employee feed birds, collect old baseball cards, or refinish furniture? Again, share this information. You are providing ways for your current employees to connect with the new employee. They are more likely to reach out to a new employee with whom they share an interest. The employee announcement is also an opportunity for new coworkers to think about how their jobs will interact with that of the new employee. You can send these employee announcements by email to all employees. Make sure that you post the employee announcement in any department where employees have no email access. Following is a simple, sample new employee announcement that is emailed to the whole company when the employee starts his new job.

a. Simple Sample Employee Announcement Dear Staff: Ann Thompson is joining Mediquick Products to fill our open position in customer service. Her first day is Tuesday, April 8. Ann has worked for a number of years in customer service and we are delighted to welcome her to the Mediquick team. If you see Ann around the building, make sure you welcome her to the company. She will participate in employee onboarding activities for her first couple of weeks on the job. Ann's new employee mentor is Mark Veja, so if you have questions or need to meet with Ann, you can talk with Mark before she starts. Ann will work closely with the other customer service specialists. She will work in the customer service department wing. Take a moment to stop by and welcome Ann to the company. She has a lot to share with her new coworkers as she loves cats, square dances weekly, and volunteers in a local homeless shelter. She is on the Board for our local Women's Resource Center. Thanks for joining me in welcoming Ann to the team. Regards, Name of Department Manager / Boss

b. Employee Announcement Here is a second sample of a simple new employee announcement that you would email to all of the company's employees when the employee starts his new job. To: All Staff Dear Staff: I'd like to introduce James Gonzalez who is starting at Johnson's as a product specialist on May 1. John will work in the marketing department where he will report to Sherri Howell. His job responsibilities will include coordinating all marketing services for the xx product. He'll work with the product development team on all aspects of developing the product through launching the product in the international markets. We've hired John to carry out our new vision of how product development needs to involve making a business case and market for the product before we make a single widget. This gives us the opportunity to see what potential customers really want and need before we build products.

He is enthusiastic and excited about our new approach that will involve him very early in the product development cycle, an approach he believes will revolutionize our sales. John's degree is from LaSalle University where he majored in marketing and minored in business. Join me in welcoming John. He'll work with the other product specialist, Mary Robertson, who will serve as his official mentor. You will find John in the office right next to Mary's in the marketing wing. I've attached John's picture so that you will be able to recognize and greet him. You can reach John on extension 543 and he spends a lot of time in AIM as johngonzalez222. He's also an enthusiastic player of all sports so let him know who needs a team member. Regards, Name of Department Manager / Boss Remember that welcoming and announcing a new employee before he arrives for day one of his new job is a warm introduction to the company and your staff. The new employee will feel special and important—just what you want your new employee to feel when he or she starts their new job.

II. CONJUNCTIONS

Without conjunctions, you’d be forced to express every complex idea in a series of short, simplistic sentences: I like cooking. I like eating. I don’t like washing dishes afterward.

What Are Conjunctions? Conjunctions are words that link other words, phrases, or clauses together. I like cooking and eating, but I don’t like washing dishes afterward. Sophie is clearly exhausted, yet she insists on dancing till dawn. Conjunctions allow you to form complex, elegant sentences and avoid the choppiness of multiple short sentences. Make sure that the phrases joined by conjunctions are parallel (share the same structure. I work quickly and am careful. I work quickly and carefully.

a. Coordinating Conjunctions Coordinating conjunctions allow you to join words, phrases, and clauses of equal grammatical rank in a sentence. The most common coordinating conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so; you can remember them by using the mnemonic device FANBOYS.

I’d like pizza or a salad for lunch. We needed a place to concentrate, so we packed up our things and went to the library. Jesse didn’t have much money, but she got by. Notice the use of the comma when a coordinating conjunction is joining two independent clauses.

b. Correlative Conjunctions Correlative conjunctions are pairs of conjunctions that work together. Some examples are either/or, neither/nor, and not only/but also. Not only am I finished studying for English, but I’m also finished writing my history essay. I am finished with both my English essay and my history essay.

c. Subordinating Conjunctions Subordinating conjunctions join independent and dependent clauses. A subordinating conjunction can signal a cause-and-effect relationship, a contrast, or some other kind of relationship between the clauses. Common subordinating conjunctions are because, since, as, although, though, while, and whereas. Sometimes an adverb, such as until, after, or before can function as a conjunction. I can stay out until the clock strikes twelve. Here, the adverb until functions as a coordinating conjunction to connect two ideas: I can stay out(the independent clause) and the clock strikes twelve (the dependent clause). The independent clause could stand alone as a sentence; the dependent clause depends on the independent clause to make sense. The subordinating conjunction doesn’t need to go in the middle of the sentence. It has to be part of the dependent clause, but the dependent clause can come before the independent clause. Before he leaves, make sure his room is clean. If the dependent clause comes first, use a comma before the independent clause. I drank a glass of water because I was thirsty. Because I was thirsty, I drank a glass of water.

d. Starting a Sentence with a Conjunction Many of us were taught in school that it is an error to begin a sentence with a conjunction, but that rule is a myth. As mentioned above, a subordinating conjunction can begin a sentence if the dependent clause comes before the independent clause. It’s also correct to begin a sentence with a coordinating conjunction. Often, it’s a good way to add emphasis. Beginning too many sentences with conjunctions will cause the device to lose its force, however, so use this technique sparingly. Have a safe trip. And don’t forget to call when you get home. Gertie flung open the door. But there was no one on the other side.

III. SPECULATIVE JOB APPLICTION LETTER

The first thing a potential employer sees in your job application is the cover letter. This doesn't just support your CV – it's an opportunity for you to stand out from the crowd and persuade the recruiter to put you through to the next round. Be wary of spending hours on perfecting your CV at the expense of your cover letter. If you need some inspiration on what to include and what format to use, here are our helpful guides – just remember not to copy them as exact templates. 1. Standard, conservative style This is ideal for sectors such as business, law, accountancy and retail. For more creative sectors, a letter like this might be less appealing, and could work against you. Dear Mr Black, Please find enclosed my CV in application for the post advertised in the Guardian on 30 November. The nature of my degree course has prepared me for this position. It involved a great deal of independent research, requiring initiative, self-motivation and a wide range of skills. For one course, [insert course], an understanding of the [insert sector] industry was essential. I found this subject very stimulating. I am a fast and accurate writer, with a keen eye for detail and I should be very grateful for the opportunity to progress to market reporting. I am able to take on the responsibility of this position immediately, and have the enthusiasm and determination to ensure that I make a success of it. Thank you for taking the time to consider this application and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future. 5|Page

Yours sincerely 2. Standard speculative letter This may vary according to the nature of the organisation and the industry you're applying to. Dear Mr Brown, I am writing to enquire if you have any vacancies in your company. I enclose my CV for your information. As you can see, I have had extensive vacation work experience in office environments, the retail sector and service industries, giving me varied skills and the ability to work with many different types of people. I believe I could fit easily into your team. I am a conscientious person who works hard and pays attention to detail. I'm flexible, quick to pick up new skills and eager to learn from others. I also have lots of ideas and enthusiasm. I'm keen to work for a company with a great reputation and high profile like [insert company name]. I have excellent references and would be delighted to discuss any possible vacancy with you at your convenience. In case you do not have any suitable openings at the moment, I would be grateful if you would keep my CV on file for any future possibilities. Yours sincerely

IV. HOW TO START AND END A BUSINESS LETTER OR EMAIL Make sure that your business letters and emails use the correct salutations and endings. If you write business correspondence, you'll need to know how to start a letter (or email) and how to end the letter or email. For example, a common mistake in ending an email is to write "Bye" or "Bye Bye". As this is not a standard way of ending business emails, it makes your writing look unprofessional. Here are some widely used phrases for starting and ending business letters and emails in British English. How to start a letter The way you start your letter depends on how formal you need to be. Here are some examples: 1. Formal letter of application (for a job) If you don't know the person you're writing to, you can start with "Dear Sir / Madam". If you start with this, you should end "Yours faithfully". Here's an example: "Dear Sir / Madam I am writing to apply for…" End: "I look forward to hearing from you Yours faithfully (your name)"

2. Formal business correspondence (for example: a letter of enquiry) In most business correspondence, you can start with "Dear Mr / Dear Ms" + surname. You should end the letter with "Yours sincerely". For example: "Dear Mr Smith" (Dear Ms Smith) I am writing to enquire about your prices…" End: "An early reply would be appreciated / I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience." Yours sincerely (your name)" 3. Formal letter of reference In British English, we also use the formal term "To whom it may concern" when we write a letter of reference on behalf of someone. Here's an example: "To whom it may concern I write with reference to Ms Smith, who has worked in my company since …" End "Yours faithfully (your name)" How to start an email Business emails are usually much shorter than business letters. They also tend to be more informal. 4. Business email (friendly) You can write the person's first name and use a more friendly ending. Here's an example: "Dear (+ first name) Just a quick note to remind you about …" End "Best wishes / Kind regards (your name)"

5. In-company email request If you're writing to a colleague, you can either use their first name, or start the email immediately. Here's an example: "(no salutation) Could you…" End "Thanks / Cheers (either write your first name / omit it)" In British English, "Cheers" means "thank you and goodbye".
