MASTER TUNG ACUPUNCTURE – TOP 30 MASTER TUNG POINTS

About this book This book does not have the pretension to be a reference text on Tung’s Acupuncture, since it’s content is based on my own studies and very basic understanding of the system. Very few practitioners know Tung’s acupuncture in Brazil and since I had my first contact with it, about a year ago, it has really impressed me. This book is being published in english first, since the english speaking community is much more active and numerous than the portuguese speaking community, and this way, a lot of people, much more experienced than me, can help a lot this ongoing project. Soon after this book is published in english, it will be translated into portuguese. My ultimate goal is to humbly contribute to the community and help propagate Tung’s acupuncture in Brazil. These “Top 30” points were not randomly chosen. I’ve used some of them in my daily practice and also, as a matter of fact, all 30 points are based on an online seminar by Dr. Chuan-Min Wang, who was a direct disciple of Master Tung. There are many, many other great points in Tung’s Acupunture, but I had to narrow them down to only 30. My next project will be a Top 50 or Top 60 Tung’s points book. This book is free. This way, I hope I can help motivate people to start learning and using the system. Everyone can download, share, copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format.. It has no copyrighted

material. It is absolutely free for personal use. But it is not allowed to change the contents of this book,. If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material. Also, it is not allowed to use the material for commercial purposes. I truly believe that knowledge must be freely shared and this gift to the community must remain free.

LÌ GĀN JIÀN YǏNG (立竿見影) is an expression that was used

very often by Dr. Richard Teh-Fu Tan and is very appropriate in Tung’s Acupuncture as well. It can be translated as “Stand a pole under the Sun and immediately see its shadow”. In other words, “Immediate results”. That’s how acupuncture should work, that’s how Dr. Tan’s Balance Method works and that’s how Tung’s Acupuncture also works!

Who was Master Tung?

Master Tung Ching–Chang (董景昌大師, DǑNG JǏNG CHĀNG DÀSHĪ) was born in 1915 in the Shandong (山東, SHĀNDŌNG) Province in Northern China. The Tung’s family orthodox acupuncture is based on many generations of Tung’s family teachings. Tung’s Acupuncture was a secret tradition, exclusively passed down within the family. Master Tung Ching-Chang broke this tradition and accepted his first disciple outside the family over 50 years ago. There are over 400 Tung’s unique acupuncture points distributed mostly on the extremities of the body. Tung’s acupuncture is well known for it’s unique set of points, being a complete system that includes its own channels, unique points, diagnostic methods and needling techniques. Tung’s

14

MASTER TUNG ACUPUNCTURE – TOP 30 MASTER TUNG POINTS

acupuncture is based on a five zang (and six fu) channel system that is unique to it, and different from the traditional 14 channels of acupuncture. And also, Tung’s acupuncture is a complete acupuncture tradition that predates the traditional 14 channels system. The origin and principle of each of Master Tung’s points follow the law of the five elements (五行五行, WǓ XÍNG) and the five zang (五 脏, WǓ ZÀNG) channels. Each point has its own pathway which directly connects to the five zang (and six fu).

Tung or Dong?

Master Tung is sometimes called Master Dong. The reason for this is that Master Tung originally took the Wade-Giles romanization system of his surname “董” before the pinyin (拼音, PĪNYĪN) system became popular. Though pinyin is the prefered romanization system now, many people prefer to use Tung as the name was originally translated and also as Master Tung himself preferred.

MASTER TUNG ACUPUNCTURE – TOP 30 MASTER TUNG POINTS

Tung’s Acupunture

Principles

• Local areas never needled. • Fewer needles. • Distal treatment – the most distal the better. • Contralateral needling for pain or structural problems. For chronical conditions, bilateral. • Bilateral needling for treating organ systems. Tung style Acupuncture does not need the use of the diagnostic methods (pulse, tongue etc.) or terminology adopted by the TCM acupuncture. Tung’s acupuncture is very safe since most of its points are located on the body’s extremities. If the patient has a defiiciency, energy will be pushed toward it. In case of an excess, energy will be pulled from it. Needles are never inserted at the site of pain or injury.

“Man corresponds with nature: In heaven, there are Yin and Yang; in man, there are 12 large joints of the limbs,” “When one understands the principles of the 12 joints, a sage will never surpass him.” “Diverse pricking to the right side or to the left, contralateral insertion of pricking the upper part to cure the lower disease, and pricking the left side to cure the right.”

Holographic Theory

27

MASTER TUNG ACUPUNCTURE – TOP 30 MASTER TUNG POINTS

Holographic Theory The word “Holographic” comes from the Greek “holographos” (literally “written in full,” from holos “whole” + graphos “written”). The Holographic Theory in acupuncture states that a small part of the body can treat larger areas of the body. Ear and abdominal acupucture, Korean hand acupuncture (Koryo Sooji Chim) are examples of holographic systems, since they can treat the whole body. An importante example of holography in Tung’s acupuncture is the second metacarpal bone. There are four points on the lateral side of the bone that can treat a large area of the body. LÍNG GǓ (靈骨) and DÀ BÁI (大白), two very commonly used points, are among those. In Tung’s acupuncture there are many other examples, such as the set of points 88.17 (駟馬中, SÌ MǍ ZHŌNG), 88.18 (駟馬上, SÌ MǍ SHÀNG) and 88.19 (駟馬下, SÌ MǍ XIÀ) which can also be used to treat a larger area of the body.

Techniques

31

MASTER TUNG ACUPUNCTURE – TOP 30 MASTER TUNG POINTS

Tung’s Acupunture

Techniques

Qi moving technique When inserting a needle to treat an injured area, ask the patient to move that area, or do it for him if he is unable to do so. For example, if the patient has TMJ pain (Temporomandibular Joint), the point 66.03 (火硬, HUǑ YǏNG) can be used. By the way, here is an example of “feet treating head” or “bottom treating top”. So, when you needle the point, ask the patient to move his jaw. This way, the body will know what you are trying to accomplish and the Qi will be directed to the affected area..

32

MASTER TUNG ACUPUNCTURE – TOP 30 MASTER TUNG POINTS

Dao Ma (倒馬, DÀO MǍ) technique The Dao Ma (倒馬, DÀO MǍ), translated as ‘inverted horse’, technique uses two or three points combined, most commonly arranged in a vertical line or along a channel, to increase needle stimulation. These points are located relatively close to each other, usually no more than two or three cun apart. On the hands and fingers, these points are usually closer, less than one cun apart, sometimes a few fen apart. In fact many of Tung’s unique points are arranged in two or three point sets, meaning that these Dao Ma groups are always needled in combination rather than as single points. The goal is to achieve more effective and immediate results when needling points distal to the area of disease. For example, the points 22.04 (大白, DÀ BÁI) and 22.05 (靈骨, LÍNG GǓ) are a very common Dao Ma combination. They are always needled together.

Zones Distribution

35

MASTER TUNG ACUPUNCTURE – TOP 30 MASTER TUNG POINTS

Zones Distribution There is a numbering convention created for nonChinese speakers which helps locating the area in which the point is. The sequence is related to the order in which the points were presented in Tung’s original 1973 book, “Tung’s Regular Meridian and Points”. Zone 1 is the fingers, zone 2 is the dorsum and palm of the hands, zone 3 is the forearms, and so on. Traditionally, when the points numbers are setup, the zone number is “doubled”. This means that zone 1 becomes 11 (not ‘eleven’, but ‘one-one’), zone 2 becomes 22 (two-two), all the way to zone 1010 (tenten). For example, point DÀ BÁI (大白) is numbered 22.04, meaning it is the fourth point on the hand. Point HUǑ YǏNGǔ (火主火主) is 66.03, the third point on the dorsum of the foot.
