Look at the following examples:

Lesson 4 September 11th, 2001 – Eye witnesses

Read and listen to one of September 11th stories. This one comes from Jerry. He was at the Word Trade Center that day.

A lost friend

Abdu Malahi, (1964-2001)

“I worked in WTC 3, better known as Marriott World Trade Center. My office was between the first and second floor. I was an audio visual technician. I started working at the World Trade Centre in February, 2001. On September 11th I arrived at work at 7am to find that the dry-clean department didn't have my suit cleaned and ready for me so I called my manager from the basement and told him the situation and he said to clock in and come upstairs. Not having the proper clothing to work on the floor I worked in and around the office cleaning and organizing equipment. I talked to Abdu Malahi, he was 37, from Yemen, had two sons and a wife. We spoke about an hour about the weekend that just passed, we were good friends. We had the same taste in music and had many things in common. I was walking through the office, talking to Laura, my other manager. Suddenly, we heard a strong and strange noise. It sounded like a refrigerator fell from the sky and hit the other side of the ceiling. We all stood up and looked at each other. Two seconds later, we started to run. We ran as fast as we could. While we went down stairs, Abdu came back to look for his shoes.

55

Módulo I

They were under his desk. After that moment I did not see him again. Laura and I continued going down the stairs until we got to the lobby. There, we found panic and chaos everywhere. Many people ran in fear. As I got to the street, I noticed there were a few cars abandoned in the middle of the road, some crashed into the walls or other cars. I decided to call my family to tell them that I was all right. I still re m e m b e r th a t d a y… e ve ryth in g was so confusing and frightening. I was really scared. My friend died… I re a lly m iss h im a lo t… ”

Lesson 5 American symbols: Coca-Cola

Read about the Coca-Cola history

It was 1988. In New York, builders worked on the Statue of Liberty. Eight hundred miles away, another American symbol was about to be created. John Pemberton, a civil war veteran and Atlanta pharmacist changed American history. He loved preparing different medicine drinks. One afternoon, he was searching for a quick cure for headaches; he mixed a fragrant, caramel-coloured liquid. He took it to Ja co b ‟s p h a rm a cy. T h e y m ixe d th a t fo rm u la w ith ca rb o n a te d w a te r a n d th e y sta rte d to sell if for 5 cents a glass. Frank Robinson, a bookkeeper, named the mixture Coca-Cola. In its first year, the company sold about 9 glasses of Coca-Cola a day. Unfortunately for Pemberton, he was more an inventor than a businessman and had no idea that his invention would be one of the greatest products of the world. Over the course of three years, 1888 – 1891, Pemberton sold the company to an Atlanta businessman, Asa Griggs Candler for a total of $2.300. Asa Cadler, a natural born businessman transformed Coca-Cola from an invention to a business. He wanted people to know Coca-Cola so its name was everywhere and the aggressive promotion worked very well. By 1895 Candler had syrup plants in Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles. In 1894 a Mississippi businessman named Joseph Biedenghart was the first to put the drink in bottles. He sent 12 bottle s to C a n d le r b u t h e d id n ‟t p a y a tte n tio n to th e im p o rta n ce o f that.

75

Módulo I

In 1989 two lawyers, Benjamin Thomas and Joseph Whitehead, had the exclusive rights from him to bottle and sell the drink – for the sum of 1 dollar. This, of course, was an imitation from the one Candler sold. The company decided to have a strong advertising campaign and to create a distinctive bottle to assure people that they were getting a real Coca-Cola. In 1923 Woodrull became the company president. He wanted Coca-Cola all over the world. He was a marketing genius who saw opportunities for expansion everywhere. Coca-Cola was really everywhere, Woodrull made Coca-Cola not just a real success, b u t a b ig p a rt o f p e o p le ‟s live s. In 1960, after 75 years, the company decided to expand with new flavours: Sprite in 1961, Tab, in 1963 and Fresca in 1966. The company continued growing all over the word. In 1978, The Coca-Cola company was selected as the only company allowed to sell packaged cold drinks in the Republic of China. In 1985, it was the first change in the formula in 99 years. People in taste tests loved the new formula but not in the real world, so finally they returned to the first formula. From 1891 until nowadays, advertising was one of the most important strategies of the company. Every 10 seconds, 126,000 people choose the Coca-C o la b ra n d a n d it‟s th e company mission to make that choice exciting and satisfying every single time. Self correction activity 5.1

One day, the postman came to the house. He gave Cinderella's sister an envelope. In the envelope there were three invitations to a party at the Prince's house. She said to her sisters, "Fantastic! There is a party at the Prince's house. I can wear my new red dress and Esmeralda can wear her new blue dress, but Cinderella can't go because her dress is old and dirty and she hasn't got any shoes." On Saturday, at 8 o'clock, the ugly sisters went to the party. Cinderella sat in the kitchen. She was very sad. There was a ring at the door. Cinderella opened the door. There was a woman. She said, "Hello! I am your Fairy Godmother. Why are you sad?" Cinderella said, "I want to go to the party but I haven't got any beautiful clothes." The Fairy Godmother said, "No problem, here is a new dress and some glass shoes. There is a golden bicycle in the street. Now you can go to the party, but you must return before 12 o'clock." Cinderella said, "Thank you." She put on the glass shoes and the red dress. She looked very pretty. Then she went to the party by bicycle. The party was very good. At first, Cinderella was very shy but after an hour, the Prince asked Cinderella to dance. They danced for a long time. The Prince said to Cinderella, "I like your dress and you are very pretty." Cinderella was very happy. She forgot what time it was. Suddenly, the clock rang. Cinderella said, "Oh no! I must go. It is 12 o'clock." She ran home; at the door of the Prince's house she lost her shoe. The next day, the Prince was very sad because he was in love with Cinderella but he didn't know where she lived. He went to all the houses in the village and said, "Do you know whose shoe this is?" Finally, he went to Cinderella's house. Cinderella opened the door. The Prince said, "I love you. Do you want to marry me?" Cinderella said, "Yes." The wedding was the following week. Cinderella and the Prince were never unhappy again.

Lesson 6 "Henry Ford: A legend on wheels"

Henry Ford was born on a farm near Dearborn, Michigan, on July 30, 1863, and educated in district schools.

As a young schoolboy, Ford liked learning how things worked. He once built a high rpm steam turbine engine at school. It exploded and burnt down the school fence. His father considered him not a farmer but a tinker. H e b e ca m e a m a ch in ist‟s a p p re n tice in D e tro it a t th e a g e o f 16. From 1888 to 1889 he was a mechanical engineer, and later chief engineer with the Edison illuminating Company. In 1893, after experimenting for several years in his free time, he completed the construction of his first automobile, and in 1903 he founded the Ford Motor Company.

"Young man, you have the right idea," Edison said. "Keep right at it. This car has an advantage over the electric car because it supplies its own power."
