“Ounces equal pounds, and pounds equal pain.” As the result of an Urgent Operational Requirement from the UK Ministry of Defence to reduce the weight burden on troops in Afghanistan, the Magpul EMAG 30 is now standard issue for all British soldiers deploying with the 5.56 NATO SA80/L85A2 weapon system. The EMAG, or “Export Magazine”, was designed specifically for compatibility with all variants of the standard issue British service rifle, and shaves almost a full kilogram (2.20 lbs) of weight from each soldier’s ammunition load out compared to the previously-issued steel magazines. Magpul will deliver just over 1 million EMAGs in total by spring 2011, many of which have been issued to British soldiers in Afghanistan already.
The EMAG (Export MAGazine) is a lightweight 30-round 5.56x45 NATO polymer magazine that features a number of aesthetic and functional changes from the original PMAG. While EMAG remains 100% compatible with the AR15/M16 platform, its unique geometry is optimized for foreign-made weapons such as the HK 416, and British SA-80. To enhance compatibility with double and triple magazine pouches as well as aftermarket mag couplers, the EMAG features a slim, rib-less, anti-snag profile. Front-to-back and side-to-side dimensions have been adjusted to ensure compatibility with as many STANAG 4179 weapons as possible, including most non Colt-spec AR15 rifles. EMAG features the same pop-off Impact/Dust Cover as the PMAG to prevent dirt and debris intrusion and protect the feedlips from impact damage during storage. MISSION DRIVEN = MISSION CRITICAL Aftermarket butt stocks are one of the most commonly purchased accessories for the AR15/M16 platform due to the inherent lack of quality and functionality found in most “standard issue” offerings. In order to determine the best stock for your mission needs, consider the following performancebased criteria.

STOCK TIP NO1: WEIGHT & BALANCE As a general rule, the weight of a stock usually corresponds to its feature set such as adjustability, strength, size, comfort, accessories, or lack thereof. Depending on the specific role and configuration of your weapon, it may be desirable to sacrifice features for lighter weight, or vice versa. One helpful tip when considering stock weight is to evaluate the rifle’s balance. Although less weight may seem better on paper, additional mass in the stock can sometimes make a rifle feel lighter and less cumbersome by shifting the weapon’s balance point toward the shooter’s body.

Designed in conjunction with the MS3 Multi Mission Sling System, the ASAP Ambidextrous Sling Attachment Point allows a range of motion greater than 180 degrees, enabling true ambidextrous weapon manipulation for both left and right handed shooters. The ASAP replaces the standard carbine stock receiver end plate, providing a tactical advantage by minimizing snagging and facilitating easy transition to and from weapon and reaction side shoulders. The ASAP works with single-point slings with snap hook style attachments such as the Magpul MS3 Sling.
That said, two point slings also have their place: recon patrols where added comfort is acceptable, snipers who carry a carbine across their back, climbing and negotiating obstacles, or going hands on for extended periods of time. Because of this, the MS3 can easily be reconfigured as a two-point sling using a secondary forward attachment point.

Single point slings allow the shooter to easily transition to and from weapon side and reaction side while trying to minimize exposure or to shoot under, over, or around obstacles. While many shooters criticize single point slings for being uncomfortable or the weapon banging their knees when transitioning to a secondary weapon, the bottom line is this: if you’re worried about bruised knees, you might want to find a different job.

In an effort to avoid these VFG pitfalls, many shooters have adopted a “thumb break” grip that utilizes the VFG primarily as a reference point, rather than an actual grip. This technique places the non-dominant hand in front of the VFG, gripping the weapon handguard. Although the thumb break grip can be effective, its ergonomics leave something to be desired.

Unlike conventional vertical foregrips, the AFG™ (Angled ForeGrip) takes into account natural body mechanics and provides a comfortable and stable user interface that reduces fatigue and allows for more precise weapon control. By positioning the shooter’s hand high on the center line of the bore, the AFG helps mitigate recoil and control the weapon, facilitating faster, more accurate follow-up shots.
MISSION:
Of these accessories, only the vertical fore grip (VFG) attempts to improve weapon control and ergonomics. Unfortunately, depending on technique, the use of a VFG may actually decrease shooter lethality as measured by hit percentage, accuracy, and time to engage targets. This inefficiency can be explained by a number of factors, but the two primary reasons are the poor ergonomics of the vertical “broom handle” grip, and the placement of the weapon’s mass on top of the shooter’s fist, which decreases weapon point control.
Taking into account body mechanics and ergonomic considerations, the AFG provides a forward grip/index point that reduces shooter fatigue and enhances weapon point control.

As tactics and techniques evolve to address the demands of a dynamic battlefield, so too must the weapons and equipment employed by the shooter. Recent years have seen a trend toward shorter, more compact rifles for urban and close quarters combat, along with a dramatic increase in weaponmounted accessories. Rail systems, tactical lights, optics, lasers, sound suppressors, and of course, vertical fore grips have become commonplace on the battlefield, and are intended to increase efficiency and lethality.

Slim line design and small size allows for compatibility with a wide variety of rail systems, rail covers, and accessory mounts. The AFG features a three-piece design with an interchangeable finger shelf that allows for a flat “A1-style” surface or an “A2-style” finger nub, depending on shooter preference. In terms of usability and shooter interface, the bolt catch is the most inefficient control on the AR15/M16 weapon system. To lock the bolt to the rear, as one does when clearing a weapon stoppage, the shooter’s right hand retracts the charging handle while the left hand depresses the bottom of the bolt catch. This series of excessive waste movements forces the shooter to remove their hands from the standard firing position and away from fire control. While these slow, awkward movements may be tolerable for administrative loading/unloading procedures, inefficient weapon manipulation is unacceptable for tasks such as malfunction clearance in a gunfight where seconds count.
INSTALLATION MISSION:
The BAD Lever allows manipulation of the AR15/M16 bolt release using the trigger finger, without requiring the shooter to remove their weapon hand from fire control.
