What is DAB Digital Radio?

DAB means Digital Audio Broadcasting. The difference between a DAB radio and a conventional AM/FM radio is that broadcasts are transmitted digitally resulting in a high quality audio sound*, without any hiss, fading or crackles.

Your DAB radio will automatically scan and find all the available stations for you. Each station name, together with other helpful broadcast information is shown on the display; all you need to do is scroll through the station names and select the one that you would like to listen to, so it’s very easy and quick to use.

Product set up

Charging the battery

ote: The radio uses the earphone lead as an aerial so it is N essential that the earphones are connected and the wire lead fully extended before you switch on and the radio starts to scan.

Switch on

Press the power switch on the top of the radio to switch on.

Your Touch Handheld DAB radio is fitted with an internal Lithium ion rechargeable battery. Before you use your product for the 1st time you will need to charge the battery for a minimum of 3 hours. From a full charge you will be able to listen to your radio continuously for approximately 8 hours, with a charge time between each use of 2 hours.

When switching the radio on for the first time, you will see a welcome message for 2 seconds ‘Welcome to Digital Radio’ and then the radio will begin to scan automatically for DAB radio stations. A progress bar will show the progress of the scan and the number of stations found during the scan will also be displayed.

1. Connect the mains power lead into the socket on the right hand side of the radio (as you look at the radio from the front). 2. Plug the power adaptor into the mains power wall socket and switch on. Leave to charge for 3 hours before first use.

- Please keep your radio away from bright sunlight or heat sources, such as a radiator

- Please do not use or leave in a humid or very damp place such as a bathroom

When the scan is complete your radio will select the first available station and begin to play. Stations are listed in numerical and then alphabetical order by default.

Note: The DAB radio station list is stored in the memory and so the next time you switch your radio on, the station search does not take place. It is possible to scan manually for stations. Please see page 12.

Switch on

Press the power switch on the top of the radio to switch on.

The display will light up and you will see ‘Welcome to Digital Radio’.

Your Touch Handheld DAB will return to the mode that it was last used in (DAB or FM). If you were listening to a DAB station before then this station will be automatically selected.

Switch off

Press and hold the power switch on the top of the radio, ‘Powering off...’ will be displayed and then the radio will switch off.

Note: You will not be able to switch off your radio if the touch panel lock is on. See opposite.

Adjusting the volume

There are 10 volume steps available as well as volume off.

Touch the key to increase the volume and the key to decrease the volume. Touch and hold the or key to progressively increase or decrease the volume.

Switch between DAB and FM mode

You can quickly and simply switch between DAB and FM modes. When you switch modes, the radio will tune to the station that you last listened to, in that mode.

1. Touch the ‘MODE’ key each time you wish to switch between DAB and FM mode. You will see ‘DAB’ or ‘FM’ to the top left of line 1 of the display to confirm the current mode.

After a short while, when the radio is playing, the display will turn off to save battery power, just touch the front panel to turn the display back on again.

Touch panel lock

Your Handheld DAB radio has a touch panel lock, which you can use to stop accidental operation of the keys whilst listening to a radio station. You can also use the touch panel lock when your radio is switched off to stop it being inadvertently switched on whilst carrying it around in your pocket or bag.

1. Slide the touch panel lock switch on the top left of the radio, to the right, towards the symbol (when the radio is facing you).

2. When the radio is switched on and the touch panel lock is on, you will see a icon in the top line of the display. 3.

To turn the touch panel lock off, just slide the touch panel lock switch to the left (when the radio is facing you). If the radio is switched on, the padlock icon will disappear from the top line of the display.

Changing DAB stations

1. If you are not already in DAB mode, touch the ‘MODE’ key to go to DAB mode. 2. Touch the key to display the station list and then use the or key to scroll up and down the list. Stations are listed in numerical and then alphabetical order. 3. When the station that you would like to listen to is displayed touch the ‘ ’ key. ‘Now tuning...’ will be displayed whilst your DAB radio tunes to your selected station.

Scanning for DAB stations

With DAB radio, additional stations and services regularly become available so it’s a good idea to carry out a manual scan every now and then to make sure that you have the most up to date station listing stored within the memory of your radio. If you are using your radio in another location, eg: if you go on holiday, then it’s also a good idea to carry out a manual scan.

Touch the ‘MENU’ key. Use the or key to scroll up or down the list to ‘Local Scan’ or ‘Full Scan’. Touch the ‘ ’ key to select. The display will change to ‘Scanning...’ and the number of stations found during the scan will be displayed. A local scan takes approximately 5 seconds and a full scan takes approximately 30 seconds.

Note: A full scan is a wider national and local scan and is particularly useful if you are using your DAB radio outside of the UK.

Storing a DAB station preset

Your Touch Handheld DAB radio can store up to 10 DAB stations in its preset memories for instant access to your favourite stations.

Note: When you store DAB radio station presets, these do not overwrite your FM station presets.

Touch and hold the ‘PRESET’ key for 2 seconds . If the current preset location already has a DAB station stored, the name of the station and the preset number will be displayed. If no station is stored under the preset location, ‘< Preset X free >’ will be displayed, where ‘X’ is the number of the preset location.

3. Briefly touch the ‘ ’ key to store the station under the preset location or the or key to scroll through the 10 preset locations. When the preset location that you would like to store the station under is displayed, briefly touch the ‘ ’ key. ‘Preset X saved’ will be displayed, where ‘X’ is the number of the preset location.

Note: You can exit the DAB preset mode, without selecting a station by briefly touching the ‘PRESET’ key.

Signal strength

Your Handheld DAB radio can display the signal strength of any DAB station that you are receiving and you can use this to decide which station is best to listen to in any particular location.

1. When listening to a DAB station, briefly press the ‘ ’ key, to display the signal strength in your current location.

Note: You can exit the DAB preset mode, without storing a station preset by briefly touching the ‘PRESET’ key.

Tune to a DAB station preset

In DAB mode:

Briefly touch the ‘PRESET’ key. The preset location and the name of the station stored under that location will be displayed. You can use the or key to scroll through the 10 preset locations.

When listening to a DAB station you can see additional information in the display, which is sent by the broadcaster. There are five different types of information.

An empty will appear on the bottom line of the display to indicate the minimum signal strength for acceptable listening. The row of solid rectangles indicate the actual signal strength that you are receiving. The stronger the signal, the further to the right the row of solid rectangles will be.

In DAB mode:

ynamic Label Segment (DLS) - this is scrolling text D information supplied by the broadcaster. Information could be the name of an artist or music title, DJ’s name, contact details for the radio station etc.

1. Touch the ‘INFO’ key once to display:

Multiplex Name - displays the broadcasting area and collection of radio stations on this frequency eg: BBC National DAB, Digital 1 Network.

Channel and Frequency - eg: 12B 225.64 MHz

Signal Information - Stereo or Mono and the data rate at which the signal is being transmitted.

2. Touch the ‘INFO’ key once more to display:

Signal Error - The information provided gives details of the signal error rate, shown as a number between 0 - 99. It will not be possible to satisfactorily listen to a radio station with a signal error rate of 30 or above. Try moving to another location with your radio to improve reception.

Using the Menu

The ‘MENU’ key enables you to change some of the default settings of your Handheld DAB Radio, so that it works just the way you want it to.

In DAB mode:

Station order

Fav station - your radio monitors the stations that you listen to most often and will compile a list of the top ten. The more hours that you listen to a particular station, the higher up the list of your top ten it will become. When you select this option your ten favourite stations will appear at the top of the DAB station list. Your ten favourite stations will be displayed with a symbol in the top line of the display.

There are four different station order options to choose from which change the way that your DAB radio stations are displayed:

Prune stations - stations that cannot be received in your area, all those that would be marked with a ‘?’, are removed from your DAB station list.

Active station - the stations that can be received in your area will be reordered to the top of the DAB station list and those that you cannot receive will be at the bottom, prefixed by a ‘?’.

To change your station order:

Alphanumeric - the stations are listed in numerical and then alphabetical order. This is the default setting.

3. Use the or key to scroll through the four options and touch ‘ ’ to confirm.

Dynamic range control

4. Touch the ‘ ’ key to confirm your compression setting.

The dynamic range for each radio programme is set by the broadcaster for each radio station and may be different for the types of programme broadcast, such as pop or classical music or a chat show. The dynamic range control signal is transmitted in parallel with the audio signal for each programme and with your Touch DAB radio you can use this control signal to expand or compress the dynamic range (the difference between the loudest and quietest sounds) of the reproduced audio signal. Changing the dynamic range can affect the ‘loudness’ and/or ‘quality of sound’ of the programme that you hear so that it will be more suited to your listening conditions and your own personal listening requirements. e.g. in a noisy environment, where quiet sounds might be swamped, setting the compression to maximum will ‘boost’ the quiet sounds, whilst keeping the loudest sounds at their original level.

Power saving

To conserve battery power, you can set your Handheld DAB to turn off automatically after a period of inactivity. There are 3 options available to you.

Disable - power save mode ‘off’

5 mins - power off after 5 minutes of inactivity

10 mins - power off after 10 minutes of inactivity

You can adjust the display brightness to suit the lighting in which you are using your Handheld DAB, so that you will always be able to read the information on the display easily. There are 8 different brightness levels available to you.

Backlight

You can set the display backlight of your Handheld DAB to be ‘Always on’ or to turn off after 5, 10 or 20 seconds.

Loudness

You can turn the loudness ‘on’ or ‘off’. Selecting to turn the loudness ‘on’ will increase the bass and treble that you can hear in the music but without increasing the volume.

Local scan

With DAB radio, additional stations and services regularly become available so it’s a good idea to carry out a manual scan every now and then to make sure that you have the most up to date station listing stored within the memory of your radio.

Manual tune

Using the manual tune feature, you can select a specific digital radio channel frequency and then adjust the location of the radio, to get the strongest possible signal for that channel in your area.

Note: If you reset your radio all of your DAB and FM station presets will be deleted.

Are you sure?’ with ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ options. 4. Use the or key to highlight ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ as appropriate and touch the ‘ ’ key to confirm. 5. If you select ‘Yes’ the radio will reset and the screen will change to ‘Scanning...’

4. You can move the radio and/or adjust the position of the earphone leads to improve the signal strength.

DAB software version

If you call the helpdesk you may be asked for the DAB software version of your radio.

1. Touch the ‘MENU’ key. 2. Use the key to scroll to the third screen of options and highlight ‘DAB Version’. 3. Touch the ‘ ’’ key. The software version of your Handheld DAB will be displayed.

Factory reset

You can reset your radio and restore all of the original factory settings.

The default settings for the Handheld DAB radio are: - no stations in the station list until a scan has taken place - no allocated DAB or FM presets - alphanumeric station order - scrolling DLS display mode. See page 8. - loudness is ‘off’

FM mode

If you touch the ‘Menu’ key in FM mode you will be able to change the Contrast, Power Saving, Backlight and Loudness settings and reset the radio in the same way that you can when you are in DAB mode. See pages 10, 11 and 12.

FM scan

When in FM mode, you can touch the ‘Menu’ key and then use the or key and select ‘Scan’ which will locate all of the FM stations automatically from 87.5MHz to 108MHz.

Note: With FM radio it may be necessary to ‘fine tune’ each station by briefly touching the or key. If reception is poor try moving with your radio to another location.

In FM mode:

1. Touch the ‘MENU’ key. 2. Use the

3. Touch the ‘ ’’ key. The radio will begin to locate the FM stations and ‘Scanning...’ will be displayed. 4. When the scan is complete the radio will have stored all the FM stations it has found into the FM presets. To step through the tuned stations, touch ‘PRESET’ and use the or key to step through the stored stations.

When you have tuned to an FM station, you can switch between ‘Stereo’ and ‘Mono’ with a brief touch of the ‘INFO’ key. ‘Stereo’ or ‘Mono’, whichever is appropriate, will be clearly displayed.

Storing an FM station preset

Your Handheld DAB radio can store up to 30 FM station presets for instant access to your favourite stations

When in FM mode you can select ‘Scan’ from within the menu, which will locate all of the FM stations automatically from 87.5MHz to 108MHz. and store them in the FM presets.

Note: When you store FM radio station presets, these do not overwrite your DAB station presets.

Note: This will overwrite any previous entries in the FM presets.

1. Tune your radio to the station that you wish to preset.

In FM mode:

Check that your radio is in FM mode. You will see ‘FM’ in the top left of line 1 of the display together with a radio frequency eg: 89.60MHz.

If you were listening to an FM station when you switched the radio off then this station will be automatically selected when you switch the radio back on.

If you are experiencing problems with your Handheld DAB radio there are some quick and easy checks that you can do, which may help to solve the problem.

Radio reception is poor

-

Try moving with your radio to an alternative location to see if the reception improves. Please remember to scan for DAB stations again once you have moved your radio. See page 7.

Check that you do not have other electrical equipment too close to your radio, causing interference.

The function buttons do not respond

-

Is the touch panel lock on? See page 6.

Does your radio need charging? Please connect the mains adaptor and charge your product for 2 hours. See page 4.

Try a reset to factory defaults. See page 13.

Short battery life

Fully charge the battery (see page 4) and then fully discharge the battery. If you carry out this process several times, the maximum life of the battery will be restored.

Safety precautions

Your Handheld DAB radio is of superior design and manufacture and should be treated with care. The suggestions below will help you to enjoy this product and the benefits it brings for many years. - Keep the product and all its parts out of reach of small children. - Keep the unit away from heat sources such as radiators, heaters or other appliances that produce heat. - Do not immerse the unit in water or otherwise get it wet. - Avoid objects or liquids getting into or onto the unit. Do not use near water. - Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents or detergents to clean the product. Wipe with a damp (not wet) soft cloth to clean. - Fit the mains adaptor to an easily accessible socket, located near the radio and ONLY use the mains power adaptor supplied. Using an unauthorised power supply will invalidate your guarantee and may irrecoverably damage the radio. Switch off and disconnect the mains power adaptor when not in use. - Damage to hearing can occur with consistent exposure to high volume when using headphones. Always check the volume level before inserting headphones into your ears.

Product guarantee

This product has a warranty of 12 months and is therefore guaranteed to be free from defects in materials and workmanship during that period. If you experience a problem within that time, simply call the Helpdesk on 0845 833 1673 (local rate call charge applies).

If your problem cannot be solved by our Helpdesk, you will need to return your product to the place it was purchased. Remember to take your receipt as proof of purchase as it must be produced before the warranty can be honoured.

This product must have been used only for the intended purpose and not been subjected to wilful or accidental damage.

This warranty does not cover damage caused by excessive voltage or lightning.

If this product has been tampered with in any way, the warranty shall be considered null and void.

This guarantee does not affect your statutory rights.

WEEE Directive – Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and Council of 27th January 2003 on waste electrical and electronic equipment.

At the end of the product’s lifecycle, you should not throw this product into the normal household waste but take it to a collection point for the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment. The ‘WEEE’ symbol below, on the product, user manual and packaging indicate this.
