RIVETS AND RIVETED JOINTS

Fasteners: The devices used for holding together two parts of a machine or structure are called fasteners or fastenings. Classification: Fasteners are of two types: a. Temporary fasteners b. Permanent fasteners Temporary fasteners allow easy unfastening of the parts connected, without injuring the fastening element. e.g. nuts and bolts, screws, studs etc. Permanent fasteners cannot open without e.g.Riveting, soldering, welding, brazing etc.

FIG:- SINGLE RIVETED LAP JOINT

Important formulae: Lap Joint: Margin distance = 1.5D Row pitch = 2D in case of zigzag riveting and 2D+6 in case of chain riveting. Column pitch = 3D

Butt joint: Margin = 1.5D Row pitch = 2D in case of zigzag riveting and 2D+6 in case of chain riveting. Column pitch = 3D Main plate thickness = t Cover plate = 0.625t in case of double strap and 1.125t in case of single strap. Bottom plate = 0.625t
