Objective

To Determine the level of illumination for six types of rooms.

1.3 Introduction/theory/procedure/equipment

1.3.1 Introduction

Level 1 laboratory activity refers to condition where the problem and ways & means are guided and given to the students. However the answers to the assignment are left to the students to solve using the group creativity and innovativeness. The activity is hope to slowly introduced and inculcate independent learning amongst students and prepare them for a much harder task of open-ended laboratory activities. In these laboratory activities, students will be expose to learn the basic concepts and principles of various types of lighting lux where can assist them to determine the level of illumination for certain room.

1.3.2 Theory

The first purpose of lighting is to illuminate. Both natural daylight and artificial lighting at night should be designed to provide a comfortable level of illumination for viewing without causing eyestrain or fatigue. Lighting design involves not only determine the amount of light required within a space. It also concerned with the location pattern of light sources (windows and light fixtures), the distribution and diffusion of light, and the reflectance of this light off the room’s surfaces and object within it. The illumination can be measured by using Lux Meter as shown in Figure 1.0. Difference lightning sources give different intensity of illumination.

1.3.3 Procedure

To execute the given exercise the group should follow the following procedure:

1. Press the button to turn the meter on. 2. Place the sensor cover over the light sensor, effectively blocking all lights to the sensor. 3. Select the 2000 Lux range using RANGE switch. 4. Press the zero buttons. The reading should be zero. 5. Remove the sensor cover from the light sensor and proceed with the measurement. 6. Hold the light sensor in the area where light is to be collected. ( the light being measured must encompass the entire surface of light sensor dome). 7. It may be necessary to adjust the RANGE if the reading on the display shows dashes along the top of the reading area (select range 2000 Lux, 20000 Lux or 50000 Lux). 8. Take not less than 3 reading of illumination of each location be measures and take average. 9. Compare your result with the illumination standard.

1.5 Discussion Compare the illumination level of lighting for six type of room with the illumination standard reading. Corridor of Laman Perdana The reading of lux digital meter at staircase is -0.01 lux and in casual seeing place is 100 lux. The corridor of laman perdana only depends on the natural lighting that reflected through the wide area of the laman perdana. The location of corridor is between the staircase and the wall that blocks any light resources pass through it. The different place of corridor receive the light influence the reading of lux measurement. Laman Perdana The space of the room is bigger. From the theory reading of illumination is about 300 lux but the actual reading is only 18.5 lux. This room is blocking by another building that make the room receive less of light. Thus the room depend on artificial light available. However, the artificial light such as bulbs are mostly not functionable and not suitable for the room situation. Laman Perdana Lift The small area of lift is located in the middle of laman perdana. From the theory reading of illumination is about 100 lux but the average reading that we collected is only 19.2. this area is blocked by walls in surrounding. The only sources of light is from the fluorescent on the ceiling that gives a little amount of light in that lift. Laman Perdana Toilet The level of illumination at the toilet is about 34.50 lux. The level of illumination were affected by many factor for example available windows are not receive much natural light due to the location of the toilet is at the centre of the building. However, the standard reading of illumination is 100 lux. Moreover, the artificial lightning provided at the toilet are not fully functionable thus make the room receive less of light during daylight.

Jabatan Bendahari The wall is partially made by transparent material that allow distribution of light with the using of artificial lightning. Thus, the average value is 34.5 lux and theory reading of illumination in Jabatan Bendahari is 300 lux. Building Services Laboratory The average value for lab is 28.5 lux. The illumination level for lab room depends on natural and artificial lightning. The room is completely block by the wall and position of the window is directly to the sun. But the standard reading of illumination of lux in laboratories is 500 lux. From your understanding, explain the relationship between the location of the lux measurement and the average level of illumination. Proper illumination depends on the location and design of windows, light sources, the type of light fixtures, the selection of the light source, the intensity and distribution of the source and fixture combination, and the room environment. High average level of illumination is mostly from the place that is widely open and naturally receive light from sun resources and also from the place that is provided by the high power of fluorescent.

1.6 Conclusions

The maximum level of illumination is at the Jabatan Bendahari and laman perdana toilet that mostly receive from the high quality and power of fluorescent. But this experiment is not been done with a great achievement due to the effect of light intensity itself during daylight. The result will be more accurate due to absence of light sources during daylight. For the overall result , the quality in these places are quite poor.
