INTRODUCTORY RITES INTRODUCTION When the people are gathered, the commentator introduces the celebration. The Celebrant, the concelebrants, and ministers process while the Entrance Hymn is sung. When they arrive at the threshold of the sanctuary, they make a profound bow. Then, each one goes to their designated place. The Celebrant then venerates the altar with a kiss, and incenses the cross and the altar. Then, with the ministers, he goes to the chair.

When the Entrance Chant is concluded, the Celebrant and the faithful, standing, sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross, while the Celebrant, facing the people, says:

I

n the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The people reply:

Amen. Then the Celebrant, extending his hands, greets the people, saying:

Peace be with you. The people reply:

And with your spirit. The Celebrant may very briefly introduce the faithful to the Mass of the day with these or similar words:

Brothers and sisters, we are gathered this morning to celebrate the feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, a man of the frontiers, of a fiery passion and with a unifying personality. Saint Ignatius had the spirit of a great explorer: always on the lookout for new frontiers where he can better love and serve God, always on fire seeking God’s greater glory: a vision and passion he shared with a good company of friends. Today, as we celebrate the feast of Saint Ignatius, and, at the same time, commemorate the bicentennial of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus, let us ask for the grace to have a mind and heart like that of Saint Ignatius, eager and ready to join the great adventure to which Christ our Lord invites us.

Oratory of the Immaculate Conception in the Philippine General Hospital

PENITENTIAL ACT Then follows the Penitential Act, to which the Celebrant invites the faithful, saying:

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. A brief pause for silence follows. Then all recite together the formula of general confession:

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, And, striking their breast, they say:

through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; Then they continue:

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. The absolution of the Celebrant follows:

M R.

ay almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

The Kyrie Eleison is sung.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING

Jer 20:7-11a, 13

There seemed to be a fire burning in my heart. A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah O Lord, you have deceived me and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; every one mocks me. For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. For I hear many whispering, Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my familiar friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived, then we can overcome him, and take our revenge on him.” But the Lord is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, they will not overcome me. Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers. The Word of the Lord. R.

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 1

Oratory of the Immaculate Conception in the Philippine General Hospital

SECOND READING

Phil 3:8-14

For the sake of Christ Jesus my Lord I have suffered the loss of everything. A reading from the second Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith; that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. The Word of the Lord. R.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Sp. Ex. 104

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! Christ our Lord became one with us. By God's grace, may we know him more deeply the better to love and follow him. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! The Celebrant puts some incense into the thurible. The deacon who is to proclaim the gospel bows to the Celebrant. In a low voice, he asks his blessing:

Father, give me your blessing. The Celebrant says in a low voice:

May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips, that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well, in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. The deacon answers:

Amen.

14

Oratory of the Immaculate Conception in the Philippine General Hospital

GOSPEL

John 1:35-39

The Deacon proceeds to the ambo, accompanied, by ministers with incense and candles. Then he says:

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

R.

+ A reading from the holy Gospel according to John He makes the Sign of the Cross on the book and on his forehead, lips, and breast.

Glory to you, O Lord.

R.

Then the Deacon, incenses the book, and proclaims the Gospel.

At Bethany beyond the Jordan, John the Baptist was standing with two of his disciples; and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. The Gospel of the Lord. R.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

While the choir and the assembly repeat the acclamation, the Deacon carries the Book of the Gospels to the Celebrant, who kisses it and blesses the assembly with it.

HOMILY The Celebrant gives the homily. Afterwards, a brief period of silence may be observed.

NICENE CREED The Celebrant invites the people to profess their faith:

Let us profess our faith.

I

believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, At the words that follow up to and including and became man, all bow.

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. GENERAL INTERCESSIONS

W

ith joy and gladness, let us praise God, our loving Father for the gifts he has bestowed on the Church and the world through the person and mission of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, and through the works of the Society of Jesus, while praying for our needs and the needs of all God’s people, as we say: GLORY AND PRAISE TO YOU, O LORD! 1.

We praise you, Lord, for your gift of Saint Ignatius to your Church which he served with passionate generosity and a singular loyalty to the Bishop of Rome, the Vicar of Christ. We pray for our Holy Father, Pope Francis, for our Bishop, Luis Antonio, and all the leaders of your people. Give them the courage and daring of your first apostles, who set out for the frontiers to proclaim your word. Let us pray to the Lord:

2.

We praise you, Lord, for giving us our Filipino nation, upon which you have continuously showered your graces and showed your favour. We pray for our country and all nations of the world; may you bless its people: reconcile those who are divided, relieve the hungry and oppressed, bring joy to the sorrowing, and peace and love to all. Let us pray to the Lord:

3.

We praise you, Lord, for the gift of the Society of Jesus, which Ignatius founded as a community of apostles willing to be sent where there is greatest need. As we commemorate the bicentennial of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus, we pray for the Superior General, Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, all Jesuit priests and brothers, and all who collaborate in the work of the Society. Fueled by the fiery zeal of Saint Ignatius for your greater glory, may they be steadfast in their commitment to Christ and generous in service to your people. Let us pray to the Lord:

Let us pray to the Lord:

5.

We praise you Lord, for you have deigned to give us our families, to whom you have entrusted our development and care. We pray for our families: may you continue to bless our parents, relatives and benefactors, and keep them in your love, so that like Saint Ignatius, they may be conscientious and faithful to the Gospel and in the special mission that you have entrusted to them. Let us pray to the Lord:

6.

We praise you, Lord, for the gift of Ignatian Spirituality, based on a personal and intimate encounter with you, and enfleshed in concrete service to your people, especially those in need. Let us pray to the Lord:

Celebrant:

Father, hear our prayers, on this feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Widen our vision, that we may dream the dreams you have for us. Fuel our passion, that we may work with the strength that you inspire in us. Open our hearts, that in our friendship with one another, we may recognize your Son who meets us on our journey and leads us from our narrowness, disenchantment and isolation, to the frontiers of faith, hope and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R.:

Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS AND PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR PAGHAHANDOG NG SARILI T. OFRASIO, SJ / E. HONTIVEROS, SJ

The Celebrant, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands, silently he prays:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal. The Celebrant pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying quietly:

By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. The Celebrant then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands, silently he prays:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink.

20

Oratory of the Immaculate Conception in the Philippine General Hospital

Then he places the chalice on the corporal. After this, the Celebrant, bowing profoundly, says quietly:

With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God. He also incenses the offerings, the cross, and the altar. Then, the deacon incenses the Celebrant, the concelebrants and the people. Then the Celebrant, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying quietly:

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his hands, he says:

Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. The people rise and reply: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Then the Celebrant, with hands extended, says the Prayer over the Offerings:

Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial Celebrant with Concelebrants of the saving Passion of your Son, his wondrous Resurrection and Ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ. May he make of us Concelebrant One an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her Spouse with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs, with St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Saints of the Society of Jesus, and with all the Saints, on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help. May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. ather and Master Ignatius, discerner of the ways of God, faithful friend of the Lord, and humble servant of Christ and the gospel beneath the banner of the cross; untiring seeker of the greater glory of God through discernment and prayer, docile disciple in obedience to the Lord and his spouse the Church; you desired neither riches nor honor, but were content instead to be poor with the poor Christ spurned with Christ spurned, as long as the Holy Name of Jesus our Savior was announced to all peoples. intercede for us with the Father of mercies, that we may seek and find in all things God’s divine presence and know his sovereign will. To you, Father Ignatius, and to the heavenly Society we entrust ourselves, so that, confirmed in faith, refreshed in hope, and inflamed by evangelical charity, we may love and serve the Lord in all things and renew each day our prayer of offering: Take, Lord, receive all my liberty, my memory, understanding, my entire will— all that I have and possess; you have given to me, to you, Lord, I return it. all is yours now; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace; that is enough for me. We ask this in the name of Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

Afterwards, the Celebrant incenses the relic and the statue of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, while the choir sings the following hymn: SAN IGNACIO, KAWAL NI KRISTO T. OFRASIO, SJ / E. HONTIVEROS, SJ

THANKSGIVING FROM THE HEAD CHAPLAIN Words of thanksgiving maybe given by the Head Chaplain, after which, if necessary, any brief announcements to the people follow by the Commentator. Then the dismissal takes place.
