Maximum points: 20 points Dictionaries are not allowed! Search users 'stop at page three' Most people using a search engine expect to find what they are looking for on the first page of results, says a US study published in 2006. At most, people will go through three pages of results before giving up, found the survey. It also found that a third of the users linked companies in the first page of results with top brands. The study surveyed 2,369 people from a US online consumer panel. It also found 62% of those surveyed clicked on a result on the first page, up from 48% in 2002. Some 90% of consumers clicked on a link in these pages, up from 81% in 2002. And 41% of consumers changed engines or their search term if they did not find what they were searching for on the first page. The study shows the "increased importance of being found in the first top search results". As search engine efficacy has improved, along with the searching skills of users, so have expectations. "They [users] know what they want, and they want to find it immediately, and the majority want to find it on page one," It also says that businesses needed to take the results of the study on board. "It should be clear that to be effective, marketers need to take action to ensure that their company is found in the top search results on a broad range of search terms and not just single word generic terms." "It's time, that companies that are refreshing, re-designing, or launching a new website start with the end in mind. If no one can find it, no one will use it." The American search engine users are very impatient. According to an American study most people try to find the information they are looking for among the first ten results of a search engine. Internet users usually don’t find what they look for on the first page of a search engine results.

The study has been written on the basis of about 1400 thousand people’s answers on the phone. The findings of the study are based on a survey made on the internet. Those asked in the survey were mostly scientists and professionals. We know from this study that nowadays more people access only the first page than in 2002. About half of the people looking for information click only on the first page. We know that more than 60% of those using a search engine will stop at the first page. To follow the links on the sites found on the first page seems to be more popular than in 2002. Much fewer people clicked on links in 2002 than nowadays. People using search engines prefer to find the information they need by following links. If a searcher doesn’t find a satisfactory result on the first page, he or she will probably quickly change over to another search engine. If the first result page doesn’t give a satisfactory answer, a little less than half of the “searchers” are so impatient that they prefer to shift over to another search engine or change their search term. Changing the search term is the solution for most people who don’t find what they look for on the first page. The more experienced searchers are the better and faster results they expect to get. If the efficacy of search engines had improved, the users would get more satisfactory service. The more skilled users have higher expectations from the search engines.

As it is essential for a company to be found in the top search results, they need to use generic search terms. Companies have to take into consideration what the survey has found about search engine user habits. If companies want to be effective, they need to use well-chosen search terms. Companies with an old website will have to re-design it remembering the findings of this survey. When a company launches a new website, it will have to consider when to launch it. When a company considers the issue of its website, it has to remember that the most important thing about it is how many people will access it.
