PRONUNCIATION Unit 11: National park Target sounds: /t/ & /d/

1. Class description: 35 students at grade 10, Tran Phu high school - 20 boys and 15 girls - Level: pre-intermediate - Dominating learning styles: audio and visual - Student characteristics: inactive, not very co-operative 2. Time: 35 minutes 3. Objectives: - Skill: After the lesson, Ss will be able to: +) distinguish between two sounds /t/ and /d/ +) pronounce them correctly (in single words, sentences and paragraphs or conversations) +) recognize them in connected speech - Language: +) learn some new words containing sound /d/ and /t/ such as: tie, documentary, toxic, etc. +) improve fluency, intonation, and to be aware of the ending sounds, linking sounds 4. Assumed knowledge Ss have learnt how to pronounce some sounds like /p/, /b/, etc. 5. Anticipated problems: - If lacking time, TONGUE TWISTER of the two sounds can be omitted. - If there is time left, teacher can prepare a back-up game. 6. 7.1. Warm-up (3 min) - give Ss handouts of the song “Stand by me” lyrics - receive the hand-outs with some blanks in it - let Ss have a quick look at it in 1 min - have a quick at the lyrics and spaces - tell Ss to listen to the song carefully then fill in the - listen to the song and fill blanks because teacher will play the song only once in the blanks - play the song - fill in the blanks and give the answer to T - ask for Ss’ answers and give the correct ones - Correct answer: (1) together, (2) stand, (3) told (4) day, (5) world 7.2. Pronunciation 7.2.1 The target sound /t/ (10 min) - play a sample video of a native speaker pronouncing - watch and listen carefully the sound /t/ - model the sound and ask Ss to repeat - repeat the sound /t/ -correct mistakes of Ss and analyze the way to pronounce the target sound /t/ WORD - Ask Ss to listen to the recording and repeat the words - play the tape - read aloud those words and tell Ss to repeat (in class) Tin Cafeteria

APPENDIX 2 The back – up game Rules - Teacher divides the class into 2 groups: group 1 & group 2 - Group 1 will be /t/ sound; and group 2 will be /d/ sound. - Each group will take turns to give a word that include initial sounds /t/ or /d/ according to the sounds they are in charge of. For example: + If group 1 says: “tea”, then group 2 says “deep” + Then group 1 continue to say “top”, and group 2 says “doctor” The game will be going on if both groups still find the right words. If after 5 seconds, one group cannot give the right words, the other will be the winner; and the game ends.
