The present legislation has been introduced as a replacement to the age old Land Acquisition Act, 1894. 1894. There are no chec!s on the misuse of land. A number of times, the amount of land grabbed is far more than hat is actually required. The e(tra land remains aste and unoccupied. There should be chec!s against this because the harm done d one to the displaced d isplaced populations pop ulations cannot be undone. A lot of times, the people affected are not people ho are land oners but those ho are dependent on it for their livelihood livelihood such as landless landless or!ers etc. The compensation compensation for land does not ta!e into account the loss of livelihood to these groups.
