PREFACE Astrology is a noble science. Some say that it is indeed an art. Some others reject it as they would an idol or an illusion. Some people who have no disappointments or difficulties in their lives say that they have no faith in astrology. I submit that astrology is not only a science, but that it can very accurately guide you in making correct decisions at every level of your life. It can give very precise results, such as a person’s educational path and career in life, the sharpness of his/her mind or the degree of an individual’s brilliancy for example. Astrology is not fortune telling. It is based on the scientific calculations of the different aspects of planetary constellations at a certain time. People born into this world at any instant have certain characteristics which are related to the positions of the heavenly bodies. These characteristics are different than those people born at other times, according to the planetary positions at their birth. The horoscope is the time chart of the person at the time of birth and from this horoscope, by reverse calculations, one can determine the birth time, birth date and birthplace as well. However, it should be noted that as soon as a child is born, his environment begins to modify his character. Mostly, education and upbringing molds the personality of any individual. We all have certain qualities which, according to our environment, develop in a positive or negative manner. Thus, selfishness may emerge as unselfishness, kindness may become cruelty, and a constructive person may, through frustration, become destructive, and so on. The apparent character depends upon so many variables. . . the country, the area, the surroundings, the family and their customs, the mother and her education, the foods they eat, the teachers and of course, the friends. The latent characteristics with which we were born can therefore, through environment and good or bad training, become something superficially different, and act in contradiction with the astrological descriptions of the character. The true character will be buried deep beneath these essentially superficial traits. As of today, the knowledge of astrology is still incomplete. This is due to a misinterpretation of the writings of the ancient sages because of language barriers and the inability to correctly translate the inner essence of these teachings. Most of these works have been lost through the course of time. The translations of the verses, interpreted by individuals, may not be correct or may be colored by personal opinions. Major untranslated portions are either unavailable or known to certain people and yet have remained hidden. Therefore the present concept of this science contains only a certain portion of it. The same case applies with the Ashtakavarga system. The major portion of it is lost, and

therefore not available. That is the reason why this very important system is not followed. The Upachayas are referred to in all the textbooks, but its use in finding the results of timed events is not described anywhere. The Ashtakavarga system is a very precise and systematical way of finding the true strengths of the planets. Not only can this system give the strengths of the planets for each and every house, it can also give the shares of the planets, as well as the results of all the houses. All planets aspect the 7th house from themselves, always. The lords of opposite signs are always enemies. Similarly, the opposite house denotes opposite functions. It is easy to note that the seventh sight is always on either the enemies’ house or on its opposite criteria house. The planet in its Uccha sign (exaltation) looks on its neecha sign (debilitation) or vice versa. It should also be noted that in the horoscope, opposite signs have opposite meanings. Consider the 3rd and 9th house for instance. One stands for Initiative and using one’s own efforts to acquire things. The other stands for luck and good fortune. These are opposing factors. Where some people receive many things through sheer luck without expending any effort or struggle to acquire them, others have to struggle long and hard to get anything at all. The Fourth house gives family happiness and its opposite sign, the tenth house, represents Power and authority. Family versus Career. . .If one has power, fame or authority, it becomes difficult for him to assign quality time for his family thus imposing a certain type of conflict. Such is the case with the remaining houses. So, if a planet is in an exalted position in a house, how can it give the same or good results for its opposite sign? Surely it will spoil the results of its opposite sign. Hence it should be noted that any planet that is situated in any particular house will give the opposite results of equal strength but in a negative direction. The strength of the planets should be considered only by the amount of benefic points the planet receives in any particular house. The exaltation or debilitation of the planet according to sign, will definitely increase or reduce the overall result, but this will be based only on the benefic points that any planet gets in any particular house.

While learning this great science from my guru, the late Shri BrijGopal Shastri of Amravati (vidharbha), I came across some handwritten books in his possession on Ashtakavarga. He had explained to me the meaning of so many verses written in that book. Those verses were not available in any of the current books. Meanings of some of those verses have been noted down in my diary. In 1966, I had moved to Satara. There after I had no contact with my guru. While doing detailed study on the subject, I had found that those verses were very important, and had be studied in detail. After a long time, I returned to my native place, and came to know that my guru had passed on and all his hand written material on this subject was no longer available through his heirs. My guru had married very late in life. When he passed on, his children were much too small to understand the science. All his treasures of books were of no use to his heirs, so

they discarded all of it, and sold it as raddi to kabadi. I was very disappointed and tried to recollect his teachings from my notes. The write-up available with me although not adequate, was sufficiently enough however to study and apply in a brand new direction. There are 150 nadis in every sign. The duration of each nadi is in the range from 8 to 115 seconds. The nadis of twins will be different, and so will be their fate. But unfortunately details about this are not known. Actually the nadi is nothing but the shodasavarga (16th harmonic chart). If we cast all the shodasavarga charts, definitely there will be a change in some of them after a time lapse of even 8 seconds. That is the main reason why the fate of twins is not necessarily the same. The Ashtakavarga system is based on the relative positions of the planets. The benefic or malefic places are determined with respect to the other planets. Therefore this system can be employed for all the 16 divisional charts. Hence only this and this system can give much better results then any other system. I have been a student of astrology from 1961 for nearly 38 years and have experimented in my own way with various methods of interpretations of horoscopes mainly derived from ancient classical sources. The Ashtakavarga System, on which I have received notes, has engaged my attention for a long time now. It occupies an important place in the general scheme of Hindu astrology and offers considerable scope for further research, especially in the matter of timing events. A large number of horoscopes have been studied in the light of Ashtakavarga and a few important discoveries have been made. My specialty lies in finding the period for marriage and timing events. With the help of this Ashtakavarga system and with some research experience in the field, I have full faith in the accuracy of this system. The Ashtakavarga method of prediction has been quite popular with the rank and file of Hindu Astrology. But as usual, the method is so indiscriminately employed that its practical utility is often lost sight of. Under some wrong impression, it was known only as a system for finding out the longevity. It was discarded for some other reasons also. The main reason is the complicated method used for casting the Ashtakavarga of the planets manually. It was a time consuming job, requiring much concentration. But now with the help of computers it is a very easy job. I have also developed an "Ashtakavarga Chakra” which can give the Ashtakavarga and Sarvashtakavarga within a few seconds. With the help of this ‘chakra’, people who don’t have a computer can also cast the Ashtakavarga tables very easily. The particular Ashtakavarga system that was taught to me by my guru, when used in the interpretation of a horoscope, can give very accurate results. I have found this system to be highly useful in making predictions and it is very reliable. Of course, it requires a thorough knowledge of the various principles and rules of astrology, as well as a capacity for interpretative skills.

While studying various horoscopes, I’ve found vast differences between textbook law and the actual results that come to pass. For instance, as per the text of Hindu astrology, the marriage of an individual is performed when Guru (Jupiter) transits particular houses or makes aspects to the seventh house from itself (i.e. its transit through lagna, third house, seventh, eleventh etc.). So many times, it does not coincide with the fact, although it may do so accidentally. It is also said that when the marriage is related to the seventh house, it is partly true. But it is not always performed in the dasha or antardasha of the lord of seventh house. Jupiter is said to be a very benefic planet. Its aspect on any house enhances the good results. Some say the presence of Jupiter in any house takes away from the results of that particular house. Saturn and Mars are malefic planets and mainly their presence spoils the results of that house. I always observe the discrepancies in such rules. Mostly the results experienced by the person were quite opposite the results given in the textbooks. I have discussed this topic as well with the most renowned personalities on the subject. But unfortunately no one was able to answer exactly to the point. Moreover there was not a single system that was able to consistently give the timing event. The same is the case with the dasha system. There are so many various types of dashas, yet there is no clear understanding given in any text as to which one is correct, or when to follow which dasha system. As per my experience, the Vimshottari dasha system is correct, and gives very satisfactory results. The Ayanamsha factor is also a very important matter in calculating the dasha and the correct value of the ayanamsha can give the correct result for the Vimshottari dasha. In general, it is said that there is a direct relationship between the lord of the house and the dasha or the antardasha lord for considering the timing of an event for the outcome connected to any house. But such a relationship is not experienced. There is no perfect rule which can give the correct timing for an event regarding any house. The dasha system does not always match up with the houses (for which they represent) nor its lord. As a result, many other dasha systems have been introduced by various research scholars. In the Ashtakavarga system the powers of the planets are mainly determined by the relative positions of the planets. This power is greater than the power of the planet by itself in any particular sign or house, thus giving results that are more closely aligned to the facts. All the planets, except for the Sun and the Moon, have dual lordships. Mars is the lord of Aries and Scorpio. Venus is that of Taurus and Libra. Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius. There are so many results related to the lordship of the planets, especially the lordship of the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses. If the lord of any sign or

house is situated in either the 6th, 8th, or 12th, then the result of that house is considered to be spoiled. Though this statement may be correct to some extent, it is not perfect. Regarding the lordship of the sixth house, it is very confusing, because except for the Sun and Moon, all other planets have dual lordship. For a Cancer ascendant, Jupiter is the lord of the sixth and the ninth house. Confusion arises when we have to consider which lord to take into consideration. If it is situated in seventh house, then what will be the effect? Should it be treated as a ninth lord or a sixth lord? When testing the experiences of many people, the results, when applied strictly by the book were vastly different than expected. The planet that is said to be debilitated due to its position in its neecha rashi, or in the house of its debilitation, is experienced as giving good results. Similarly, the planet said to be exalted by sign, was found giving the worst result. This same concept can be stated in a more precise terms in this Ashtakavarga system. The planet should be said to be debilitated when it gets less than 3 points in its Ashtakavarga. The planet that gets more than 4 points should be said to be exalted. The planet that gets 4 points is said to be neutral. It is immaterial which sign it is in. The actual results coincide with the results given in the text when they are judged to be exalted or debilitated only on the Ashtakavarga power. It should also be noted that only the planet alone by its rulership or its placement in any particular house is not sufficient. There are some other houses, which are equally responsible for the results of a particular house. In the textbooks, the first house is said to deal with beginning of the life, health, means of earning (by own effort or by serving others) personality, character and childhood. In general the results related to the first house are judged by its lord, the placement of its lord, the planets situated in first house, planets aspecting the first house, or planets aspecting the lord of first house or situated with it. By applying only these concepts, perfect results will still not be ascertained. Sometimes the answer cannot be found in texts. The same applies here to other houses. The Ayanamsha is an important factor. The sayan (tropical) longitude of the planet less the Ayanamsha is the nirayana (sidereal) longitude of the planets. There is no reliable and perfect value of the ayanamsha. The nirayana Longitude of the planets is based only on the ayanamsha, while the Vimshottari dasha is based on the nirayana longitude of the Moon. The Mahadasha (main period) of Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury or Venus is longer, so a difference of even one degree in the ayanamsha can make a difference in the Mahadasha by one and a half years or so, which changes everything. Suppose we are calculating the timing of an event for a marriage. If we find the significator that can indicate marriage in any particular case, but the Antardasha of such a planet differs by one year or so, then the outcome will not be correct. Hence, the Ayanamsha is a very important factor in timing the event. I prefer to use my own customized ayanamsha which is shorter than the Lahiri by 54 minutes and gives me the most accurate results. In some cases the answer only differs by approximately 18 days.

An Astrologer’s Code of Conduct by Krushna Jugalkalani 1) I know that astrology is a truth and a Godly science, so a misuse of this science is an insult to my God. 2) I will use this science for social service and as a form of worship to my God. 3) I am aware of the flaws in human beings and will not treat any person with less importance when giving my guidance. 4) I will not misuse this science for the teaching of any religion, social matter or any unlawful act. Giving my guidance in such matters means my involvement in that act. 5) If I do not get an answer from the chart, I will NOT give my guidance! No guidance is better than the wrong guidance and I will accept my limitations about the chart as well as my own limitations as an astrologer. 6) I will not abuse or malign any other astrologer, nor will I take unfair advantage of another person’s astrological knowledge by advertising unnecessarily at their expense without proper and due credit. 7) I will try to increase my knowledge and share it sincerely with other people of similar interests. 8) I will behave truthfully and honestly at all times and keep my conduct pure in heart. 9) Any information received from a client, in the course of giving my guidance to that person, shall be kept in strict confidence. 10) I will not use any chart for purposes of public discussion by identifying the native by name, unless I have his or her explicit permission to do so, nor will I misuse any information given to me by that person.

LESSON 1 WHAT IS THE ASHTAKAVARGA SYSTEM? This system is devised as a numerical scheme of interpretation that lets us easily see a snapshot assessment of the strength of a house thru a unique point system. The Ashtakavarga system is a method of calculating the powers of the planets relative to each other. Therefore, it can be used in any chart i.e. all the divisional charts, along with Chaleta Bhava charts (diurnal charts) and even with Horary Astrology. This system also gives the power of each planet for all twelve houses. For each and every house, all seven planets contribute their power or strength in terms of numerical value. This makes it easy to compare the powers of the planets for each house. There is no other system which can give such a clear cut view of the comparative strengths of all the planets By employing the Ashtakavarga system along with other principals, the following things can be determined with great accuracy : 1) Predicting the general strengths of the planets and the houses 2) Anticipating certain important events in a person’s life 3) Forecasting dasha results 4) Overall life readings 5) Profession of the person 6) Timing events for important results 7) Day to day power of the horoscope and results 8) Marking the evolution of the achievements in the life. 9) Prasna Charts 10) Political and Social forecasting 11) Transit results The powers of the planets depends on its relative position versus other planets. This can be judged at a glance the Ashtakavarga chart. Making a judgment of the planet only by its sign or placement in a particular house without considering the planet’s power with respect to other planets doesn’t give an accurate assessment of the overall picture. In the Ashtakavarga system, the Ashtakavarga charts are cast using the natal chart and the benefic points. The individual Ashtakavarga chart is also known as the Bhinnashtakavarga. The combined effect given in one chart is known as the total Ashtakavarga chart or the Sarvashtakavarga chart. The individual chart and the sarvashtakavarga charts are both required for calculation purposes. Some also include the Ashtakavarga of

the Lagna, Rahu and Ketu, but as per my experience I don’t recommend this. The outer planets like Uranus, Neptune, Pluto are not taken into consideration either. Some people cast the malefic Ashtakavarga charts or the Rekha ashtakavarga chart, which is really nothing more than the repeated work. The total of benefic and malefic points in a house, for a planet is eight. If the benefic points are known, then automatically we know the malefic points. Eight minus the benefic points gives the malefic points. The total benefic and malefic points in a house in sarvashtakavarga always comes to 56. There are seven planets and each contributes eight points, so 7 X 8 = 56. Hence, if we know the benefic points, obviously malefic points are also known. (56 less the benefic points = the malefic points). For example, if a house contributes 28 benefic points, it means it still has 28 malefic points remaining. Therefore the result of that house will be normal. The house that gets less than 28 benefic points will give less of a result as indicated by that house. Similarly if any house contributes more than 28 points then the results denoted by that house will be enhanced. The grand total of all the benefic points distributed by the seven planets and the lagna always total 337. The contribution of each planet is given in the Ashtakavarga chart of that planet, as given below. BHINNASHTAKAVARGA

The SUN distributes 48 benefic points to each of the following houses from its natal position in the chart. Every other planet helps to distribute the Sun’s overall points to their own assigned houses below as it relates to their own natal positions from the

The total individual contribution of benefic points by any planet in any horoscope will be the same as mentioned above. The sum total of all the benefic points for all the planets will always be 337 for any horoscope. These figures do not change. These are benefic points. There are seven planets plus the Lagna that contributes to these 8 different reference points, and there are twelve houses, hence the total points should be 12 X 8 = 96, for each planet. These 96 points may be benefic or malefic. The fact that Jupiter contributes a huge 56 benefic points out of 96 points, means that 96 - 56 = 40 malefic points. That is the reason why Jupiter is called the great benefic. Similarly, Mercury contributes 54 points, Venus contributes 52 points, and so forth. Mars and Saturn however, give only 39 benefic points each, which means 96-39 = 57 malefic points. Since the malefic points outnumber the benefic points they are called malefic planets. From the above, it can be observed that each and every planet gives both malefic and benefic results. Because Jupiter, for example, gives the maximum amount of benefic points, it is called a benefic planet, while Saturn and Mars give more malefic points and are therefore called malefic planets.

In order to avoid confusion as to whether the top row is the house or the numbered sign, I will add the names of the signs underneath the houses. In this table, the signs represent a chart with an ARIES lagna, but they will always rotate under the stationery house signs in the top row, so that the proper lagna sign for the chart will always go under the 1st house column. If for example, AQUARIUS was the ascendant for the chart, then the order of the planets starting under the 1st house house would be Aq, Pi, Ar, Ta, Ge,

Ca, Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg, Ca. The side row lists the 7 planets. Each row will represent the individual planets’ point distribution throughout the houses in a numerical value from 0-8, zero being the weakest and 8 being the most powerful. At the bottom is a row for the totals of all the points accumulated for each column. The last column totals up the points in each row of planets. The accumulated totals for both rows and the columns will always be 337. Let’s take an example and calculate the chart of a male, born on October 26, 1961 at 9:45am in Nagpur, INDIA, 21N09, 079E06. Use the Ayanamsha of 22:17:42. The charts will be shown in both Northern and Southern styles to accommodate individual preferences.

Here we can see that all the planets contribute various points to each house. Remember that minimum points can go as low as zero and the maximum can go as high as 8. No planet can have more than 8 points to a house. The numbers highlighted in red indicate the planetary positions in the chart for that row as indicated by the planet to the left. For example, we can easily see that the SUN is located in the 12th house and contributes 5 points to this house. The MOON is located in the 7th house and contributes 5 points also to that house and so forth.

LESSON 2 Benefic and Malefic Planets

EXALTED OR DEBILITATED PLANETS: While studying the Ashtakavarga system, I came across some Sanskrit slokas in a old hand written book from the collections of my guru and some other books by Acharya Satyanath, Acharya Vaidyanath, Acharya Utpal etc., which clarify certain rules. I will translate a few of these Slokas in English. Sloka 1 svochchmitradivargasha: kendradibalsnayuta | Anistha phalda: sarve swalpbinduyuta yadi || (ja shi 10) MEANING: If any planet is in its exalted sign, or in its own house, or in the house of friends, or is in a square or trine (sthanbali) aspect and it has 3 or less points in its Ashtakavarga, it gives only malefic results. This goes for all the planets. There is no difference made as to whether they are malefic or benefic planets. Jupiter in Cancer is in its exalted sign. When Jupiter is in Sagittarius and Pisces, it is in its own sign. Therefore, if Jupiter is located in any of these signs, it is said to be powerful. But, if the same Jupiter is in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces and has 3 or less points in its Ashtakavarga (Bhinnashtakavarga), then it will not be possible for Jupiter to give auspicious results due to its beneficial sign placement. It is clear from this that the strength of the planet cannot be judged just from the sign it is situated in. If the planets are debilitated in the Ashtakavarga, i.e. having 3 or less benefic points for the place it is situated, even if it is in its exalted sign, it is not possible for the planet to give better results. The following sloka will clarify the meaning even more: Sloka 2 Dushtastansthita yech yech nicharimanshga | te sarve shubhada nityamadhibinduyuta yadi ||

MEANING: If any planet that is in its debilitated sign, in its fallen sign, or in the house of its enemy still has more than 4 points in its Ashtakavarga, it will give only benefic results. From these two Slokas, it is clear that the planet will give

the result according to the points it gets in its Ashtakavarga. The result is not dependent on the sign or the place it is situated. More Slokas can be referred to clarify this rule: Sloka 3 Ye chavsanaripu randhraturanbhaga | Ye nichapapripu khecharvargaykta : || Ye mandi rashipatinna sah bandhavashch | Te sarvamukhaphaldastvabindukashchen ||

MEANING: Planets with 3 or less bindus or points in their own Ashtakavarga, although situated in their exalted sign, or a friend's rashi (to fortify), or in a trikona (trine) or in a kendra (angle), or even in upchaya houses, will give malefic results. Sloka 4 Arohbiyradhikbhavtulya | bindadhika: karma bhovodayastha: || tungadi vargopagata namoga:| shadviryavantashcha shubhprada:sthu|| MEANING: Planets with more bindus in their Ashtakavarga, even if situated in their fallen sign, or in the sign of their enemy, or in the dusthana houses (6, 8 or 12), will give only benefic results. It means that the benefic or malefic results of the planets are not dependent on their situation in any particular rashi, but rather through the bindus it acquires in its Ashtakavarga placement. If we try to test every law written in the ancient books with Ashtakavarga, we would be definitely astonished to note the accuracy with which the Ashtakavarga can provide results. Without using this system as an important tool for prediction, we deprive ourselves of a very important foundation for the chart. In the classics, it is also mentioned that an exalted planet means that it has more than 4 points in the sign where it is situated and is debilitated when it has less then 4 points.

HENCE WE COME TO A VERY IMPORTANT RULE: A planet is said to be exalted or debilitated only on the benefic points it gets in its Ashtakavarga. It has nothing to do with the sign in which it is situated. IMPORTANT RESULT: The planets that get more then 4 points are called benefic planets. Similarly planets that get less then 4 points are called malefic planets, and the planets that get 4 points are known as neutral planets.

The Late Shri K.S. Krishanamurti, founder of K.P. Paddhat, also agrees that the planets do not give the results as per their natural natures. In reference to Jupiter, he states that it has lost its benefic power in the era of Kalyuga and that he has experienced the malefic effects of Jupiter firsthand. But in spite of Kalyuga, I tend to disagree. It is the effect of the points that it receives in its own place that truly makes the difference. An aspect of Jupiter with more points is always malefic. The same rule applies to all planets. With reference to Saturn, Krishnamurti says it gives malefic effects based on the constellation in which it resides. Perhaps, if he would have come across the Ashtakavarga system first, his whole theory would have been quite different. oooOOOooo

LESSON 3 Planetary Aspects • All planets aspect the 7th house from themselves. • Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th, and 10th house from itself. • Mars aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th house from itself. • Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th house from itself. It can also be noted that the lords of opposite houses are enemies of each other. The seventh sign from the uccha (exalted sign) rashi is the neecha (debilitation) rashi of the same planets. For example Cancer is the uccha rashi for Jupiter, and its opposite sign of Capricorn, is the neecha rashi for Jupiter. Similar is the case for other planets. The debilitated sign is always the opposite sign of the exalted sign. Similarly, the rulers of opposite signs are enemies of each other, or at least, they are not friends of each other. Here is one question that arises: How can a benefic planet aspect its enemy’s house or its neecha rashi by benefic sight? Certainly it will not as it can only malefically aspect its enemy’s sign. If any planet is in its exalted sign, such as Jupiter in Cancer, its aspect will be on Capricorn, which is its neecha rashi. As per the write up in the old hand written book, it was clearly mentioned that a planet with more than 4 benefic points will aspect in the same strength, but in a malefic manner. Similarly any planet with less then 4 benefic points, will aspect in a benefic manner, equal to 8 minus the points of the planet. In other words, if any planet has only 2 benefic points then its aspect will be benefic by 8-2 = 6 points. The following table gives the values of the planetary aspects.

As you can see in the chart above, the maximum amount of points that any house can receive in the Bhinnashtakavarga chart is 8. By subtracting the benefic points from the maximum allowance of 8, we can easily see the balance of malefic points. If the malefic point balance is more than the benefic point balance, the malefics are the dominating factor for the house. If the benefics outnumber the malefic balance, then the benefic factor dominates the house. Planets having more than 4 points, aspect malefically and planets with less than 4 points, aspect benefically. If a malefic planet is situated in any particular house, then the results pertaining to that house are said to be spoiled. In fact every house is said to represent more then one event in the life. For example, the fifth house represents education, children, intelligence, emotions, fame and house of crown etc. The presence of any malefic planet in the fifth house should spoil all the above results. But it is not so in every case. Suppose a chart has Cancer as a lagna, and Saturn is situated in the fifth house of Scorpio. Saturn, being a malefic, should give ill results for the things represented by the fifth house. At the same time, Saturn will be aspecting the seventh, the eleventh, and the second house, so it should also spoil the results concerned with all these houses. But it is not experienced in even 1% of the cases. The result is quite different than this. Generally, it is said that the aspect of a benefic planet is good and that of a malefic planet is bad. But in my studies I have found the reverse to be true, that the aspects of benefic planets are always malefic and the aspects of malefic planets are always found to be benefic. Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Moon are naturally benefic planets. Saturn and Mars are natural malefic planets. As per the Ashtakavarga theory, the benefic planet is the one that gets more then 4 points in its Ashtakavarga and the malefic planet is the planet that gets less then 4 points, while the planet which gets exactly 4 points is said to be neutral. After long observation and experimentation, I came to the conclusion that a planet gives the opposite results for its aspect. This means that a planet getting more than four points or bindus, afflicts the house it aspects with negative strength equal to the points it is having. This also proves correct for other aspects of Saturn, Mars and Jupiter. Saturn or Mars, if they are in the house where in their respective Ashtakavargas, they get less then 4 bindus, they give beneficial results for the house they aspect. The total benefic and malefic points a planet gets for any house are eight. This means if a planet gets 3 benefic points for any particular house then definitely it will get 5 malefic points for the same house. Similarly if a planet gets five benefic points in a house where it is, then it will get three malefic points for the same house. Thus the total benefic and malefic points are eight. This is a special effect we get in the Ashtakavarga system. We get the actual result in numerical value for the benefic or malefic effect. Following table will show the actual benefic or malefic bindus (points): Although if Jupiter, which is said to be most benefic planet, gets less then 4 points i.e. 3, 2, 1, or 0, then definitely it is going to give malefic results for the house. For the same reason some astrologers believe that Jupiter spoils the result of the place where it is situated, which is 50 percent true. Now as I have mentioned earlier, a planet will give opposite results for its aspected places. A planet with five benefic points will give the aspect effect of five malefic points and vice versa. It should be made clear that even if Jupiter acquires six benefic points in its Ashtakavarga in its place, then for the places it is aspecting, i.e. 5th, 7th, and 9th places from itself, it will send malefic results of

six Rekhas (negative points). Obviously, Jupiter will give benefic results for itself in the place where it resides. The same thing applies to Mars and Saturn as they can both give beneficial results for the house they are situated in if they have more points in any place. At the same time they will spoil the results of the places they aspect (due to the opposite aspect effect). It is a general notation that the benefic points are denoted by bindus (points) and malefic points are indicated by Rekhas (dashes). From the illustrated tables, it should be clear that every planet contributes both good and bad results for the same house. Only when its benefic points are more, then the planet is said to be benefic. This law is applicable to all the planets including Saturn and Mars (which are naturally malefic).

LESSON 4 Meanings of the Houses

All the different areas of life are distributed among the 12 houses and each house influences certain matters. In order to denote which area of the life is being focused on, we look to these houses for their particular significations as follows: First house: (Lagna) – Adya, Kalpa, Janma (birth), physical body, physical features, living or livelihood, character, personality, individuality, temperament, color, general constitution, health, vitality, vigor, tendencies, struggle for life, success/ failures, fortune/misfortune, honor, dignity, well being, head and upper part of the body, gain and profit of younger brother, patrimony of mother, higher studies, heirs, death, income, overall happiness, self respect, ego, purchase of house, land, property, vehicles. (Note: In the sub period of the lord of the first house or the planets situated in the Lagna with more then 4 points, the results will be linked to fourth and eighth house matters. Students are requested to check out this statement as well as any further statements given below in red italic letters. This thought may be new for most of us. Check this with the known results of a chart familiar to you.) Second house: Wealth, food, right eye, face, speech, family, relatives, auspicious matters, property, money and money matters, bonds and securities belonging to native, bank balances, grandfather, grand mother, wife, children, ability to express the thoughts, marriage, description of the partner, memory, imaginations, acquisition of a house, vehicles, foreign relations, short trips, authority, success of the children, childbirth. On the next page is a Summary Table that easily illustrates these notes. If, for example, a person has an AQUARIUS ascendant and is going through a MARS – SATURN dasa, the subperiod lord of the Lagna, SATURN, would now be linked up to the 4th and/or the 8th house. During this time period, events revolving around either/ both of these house matters will be in play. This is also true for any planets residing in the Lagna that have more than 4 bindus or points in their individual bhinnashtakavargas. They will also be linked up to these houses as well. General concepts: The results of any house are dependent upon the correct interpretations of the following things: 1. The strengths, aspects, conjunctions and placements of the lord of the house. 2. The natural qualities of the house, its lord, the planets situated in it, and the aspects on the house. 3. The strength of the house itself. 4. Yogas influencing the house, its lord etc.

5. Exaltations or debilitations of the lord. 6. Conditions of the lord (whether favourable or adverse). 7. Condition of the aspected house lord under consideration. 8. Same thing applies in the Navamsa chart. 9. The age, position, status and sex of the person. All of the above points are required to be properly weighed before any results can be concluded. The results are generally predicted on the above basis only. Now the question arises as to how accurate of a result do we get from the above concepts? Much depends of course on the accuracy of the interpretive skills of the astrologer. It is always easy to look back in hindsight and find the answer after the fact, but in order to be able to accurately predict an event or give the probable dates for an event, applying these same laws with skill and precision takes much practice. It is said that the result of a timed event is experienced in either the major, the sub period or the sub-sub period of the: a) Lord of the house b) Planets aspecting the house c) Planets posited in the house d) Planets aspecting the lord of the house e) Planets in association with the lord of the house. All of the above statements do not prove to be correct in any case other than at random. Hardly a single event of the life can be predicted when using the above method. These laws cannot be proven universally in all cases. In the following chapter, we will discuss how to use the Upachaya method in order to show its importance in correctly assessing the timing of different events and how all these houses interact with each other to enable us to arrive at a valid and intelligent conclusion.

LESSON 5 THE UPACHAYA HOUSES The timing event of any result is very important. For example, let’s consider the case of marriage. The life partner is usually determined from the seventh house. But in research work done on at least 100 charts, it was found that in a maximum of up to 40 % of the cases, the marriages were performed in the antardasha of the lord of the fourth or the twelfth house, even if there was no involvement with the seventh house or its lord at all. There was no direct relation of these houses with the seventh house. The twelfth house is the sixth from the seventh house, and the fourth house is the tenth house from the seventh. In 15% of the cases, the marriages were performed in the antardasha of the planets situated in the fourth and twelfth house with 4 or more benefic points from the bhinnashtakavarga of that planet. In the same case studies, the marriages of 55 % of the people having an Aries lagna were performed in the antardasha of the Moon or Jupiter (The Moon is the fourth lord and Jupiter is the ninth and the twelfth lord). The Mahadasa Lord seemed to be the least factor concerned in the timing of the event. The different signs in which these two planets were located, were also not very effective accept in some special cases. Below is a table showing the different lagnas and significators:

Out of these twelve lagnas, only in four cases did the marriage significators have lordship of the seventh house, which could be nothing more than a coincidence. These significators are highlighted in RED in the table and have dual lordship as

you can see from the 2nd column in red. The also have lordship of one of the houses, either the fourth or the twelfth, along with seventh house. It is clear from the above statement that the seventh house or its lord has a lesser role in the marriage time than the other significators. I came upon the following Slokas Sloka 5: Dashapatirlagnagato yadi syat | trishdshaika daragashcha lagnat|| ta ta shton vargopyatha tatsuhrudva | lagne shubho va shubhadadasasa|| MEANING: Any planet receiving more bindus in the 1st, 6th and 10th houses in its Ashtakavarga will give benefic results as related to first house matters in its antardasa. This formula can be applied to all other houses, using each one as the first house starting point and studying the 1st, 6th and 10th houses from that point on. The lord of the third and the eleventh house also plays a key role in the event. Similarly, planets located in the 3rd and the 11th houses from the house under consideration with 4 or more benefic points in these houses from their bhinnastakwarg, also perform a key role. The third, sixth, tenth and eleventh houses are known as the Upachaya Houses and has a very important role to play in the results of these houses. The key concept for finding the timing event for any instant of the life is based on this formula. I have tried this same principal using different houses as the starting point. Then, by figuring out the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses from that starting point, I came to the conclusion that the planet that gets the highest bindus in these houses is the significator planet that gives the results in its antardasha as it relates to the 1st house starting point.

In the previous chapter, I have given the significations of each house. In my researches, I have found that by just using these houses alone we cannot obtain accurate results. The results indicated by any house cannot be judged by the house or the planets situated in the house, or planets aspecting the house, or its lord and its position etc. (this is the system generally followed). Greater accuracy can be obtained by using the method of the Upachaya Houses. This fact will be self- explanatory when we present some examples. It was earlier told that the Upachaya Houses are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 11th places from any house. They play a very important role in the result of any event. If we try to interpret the results of any house by using standard methods, we will

usually get wrong results in 90 percent of the cases. However, when using the Upachaya method, the accuracy level becomes much more efficient and greatly increases itself up to 90%. This table shows the Upachayas from every house as follows:

In the above table one will note that I have distinguished the Upachaya Houses as Main and Secondary. Secondary upchaya houses act only through their lord and the planets located in these houses (but only if they receive more than 4 points). The main upchaya houses, on the other hand, are directly involved in the outcome. More detail will be discussed later on. Events of the life as indicated by each house and its upchaya house Each house is allocated some event in the life of an individual. Keen observation can easily prove that the results denoted by any house are the by-product of some other house. Suppose we take the case of children in general. Usually, this is signified by the fifth house. The birth of a child is a factor of the fifth house, along with the 12th, 2nd, 9th, and 10th. The second house denotes the family members and relatives. There is an increase in the members of the family as soon as the child is born. A newly born child also changes the relationship as the male now becomes a father and the female becomes a mother. Therefore, the status is also changed and it can be said that the 10th house is also affected by this. The ninth house also indicates continuation of the heritage and its heirs. The twelfth house indicates

the mating of the male and the female, without which any child can be born through natural means (excluding test tube babies here). So instead of looking at the fifth house first, consider the child to be the result of the twelfth house and its upchaya houses as indicated by the red house numbers below). We then see that the fifth house is the sixth from the twelfth. (as noted in BLUE). Similarly the ninth house is the tenth from the twelfth house. The second and the tenth are three and eleven houses away from 12th. Thus, the birth of a child using the Upachaya method, is the factor of the 12th, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 10th houses.

All the above houses play a key role in the timing of the event and must be considered. If any of these houses do not contribute, then it will be difficult to have a child. The lords of the 3rd and the 11th house from the twelfth means that the lords of the second and the tenth houses play a vital role. Similarly, any planet in the 2nd and 10th house with more than 4 points also has importance here. In order to determine a timed event that focuses on children or childbirth, one should consider the 12th house and the upchaya houses from it.

New concept for finding the results Do not get the following house meanings mixed up with the ones in the previous chapter. These meanings will be the equivalent of the 6th house from itself as they are being viewed from the perspective of the Upachaya Houses. In other words, think ‘sixth house’ when you read the first, and seventh house, when you read the second, etc.

• First house: From the first house and its upchaya houses, the capacity of the person, the capability of doing one’s own business, service, line of the business, social status, category in the service etc. and the timed event of such various matters can be properly assessed. •Second house: From the second house and its upchaya houses, the marriage, the happiness or conflicts in the married life, number of marriages, unmarried state, friendships with the opposite sex and the timing events of all these matters can be judged. (Please note that I have done much research on hundreds of charts in order to test this principle and have found it to be VERY accurate. This method can be tested for any person married or unmarried. The correctness of the chart can also be checked and the correction of the birth time can be rectified to seconds. The compatibility can also be judged for male and female charts. The proper partner can be selected by applying this method to both charts. The marriage time for both male and female should coincide.) • Third house: From the third house and its upchaya houses, the longevity and the health can be judged, along with the timing of the event. • Fourth house: From the fourth house and its upchaya houses, the luck factor, favorable or unfavorable time etc. can be judged so the time period is clear. • Fifth house: From the fifth house and its upchaya houses, the achievement of success, authority, higher post, success in elections, starting one’s own business can be judged. • Sixth house: From the sixth house and its upachaya houses, the means of earning money or a favorable period for earning can be judged. • Seventh house: From the seventh house and its upachaya houses, the sexual relationships with the opposite sex other than the marriage partner, foreign relations and bed comforts can be judged. • Eight house: From the eighth house and its upchaya houses, details about the individuality and the personality can be confirmed. • Ninth house: From the ninth house and its upchaya houses, the happiness from relations and inheritable property can be judged. • Tenth house: From the tenth house and its upchaya houses, courage, brothers and sisters, writing of books, contracts, agreements, publications etc. can be judged.

• Eleventh house: From the eleventh house and its upchaya houses, anything regarding landed property, home comforts and one’s own house can be judged. • Twelfth house: From the twelfth house and its upachaya houses, any matters revolving around children can be properly assessed. A more thorough range was covered on the meanings of the houses in the last chapter and by using this method in this way, the whole life can be assessed with a detailed amount of accuracy. Remember that these significations are the same as indicated by the sages for the sixth house from these houses!

LESSON 6 Krushna’s Ayanamsa Table There are two systems of calculating the longitude of the planets, the Tropical Zodiac (Sayana) and the Sidereal Zodiac (Nirayana). The longitudinal differences between these two systems is known as the ayanamsa. We use the Sidereal system, so the correct value on the ayanamsa is very important. The longitudes of the planets are dependent upon the ayanamsa as it will effect not only the longitude of the Ascendant, but the 16 divisional charts as well. The Vimshottari Dasha is calculated from the Moon’s longitudes and one second of difference may result in 1 to 3.6 hours difference in the dasha period, so a difference of one minute will be equal to 2.5 days to 9 days. Different scientists and astrologers are of different opinions about this “overlapping” of both zodiacs. Both of them actually overlapped in 285AD, but since then, the accumulated ‘out of alignment’ difference between these two zodiacs has widened throughout the years to 23-24 degrees and is known as the “precession of the equinox”. Due to this precession, it moves at a rate of about one degree every 72 years. Thus, the starting point when the two zodiacs last coincided, has been given anywhere from 388 B.C to 498 A.D. The values can range anywhere from 46.3 seconds to 59.9 seconds per year. I have chosen the starting date that both zodiacs coincided last, as 24th Feb 366 A.D. In the year 1900, Krushna’s Ayanamsa is 21:33:23. The yearly speed of precession from 1900 to 2000 is 50.96. From the year 2001 to 2100, the yearly rate of precession is 51 seconds. This will give the most satisfactory value of Krushna’s Ayanamsa.

USING THE FORMULA CHART: In the following example on the next page, you will be able to calculate manually how to come to the proper ayanamsa value for whatever day you were born by following the template given in the formula chart, using March 12, 1949, below, as an example. By checking the table “HOW TO FIND THE NUMBER DAY OF THE YEAR”, you can see that March 12th is day 71 from January 1st.

Over a period of one year or 365.25 days, the total precession is 00:00:51 or 51 seconds. Therefore 365.25 is the equivalent of 51 seconds and 71 is equivalent to how many seconds have gone by so far. The math now becomes: 71 / 365.25 * 51 seconds = 9.913758 seconds. Round this off to 10 seconds and add those 10 seconds to the ayanamsa value for the year 1949 that can be found in Krushna’s Ayanamsa Table on the next page. (see the Formula Chart below).

The precession for the year 1900 to 2000 may be taken as 50.96 For years 2000 to 2100, it is 51.00 For years 2100 to 2200, it is 51.05 For years 2200 to 2300, it is 51.08 For years 2300 to 2400, it is 51.14 Actually, the increase is approximately 0.044 seconds over a span of 100 years, so per year, it is increasing by a value of 0.00044 seconds per year. On the next page, I will give my Ayanamsha Table. It starts off with the year 366AD (Feb 24th), then reverts to Jan 1st for all the other longitudes. Starting from the year 1919, it will give every consecutive year thereafter up until the year of 2100. From the years 2200-2500, it lists the ayanamsa in 100 year intervals. (marked in RED in table).

LESSON 7 Krushna’s Planetary Strengths Worksheet The following worksheet gives an accurate summary of the overall strengths of each of the planets as well as their relative strengths to each other. Planets receiving LESS than 12 points in row 18 are considered MALEFIC. Planets receiving MORE than 12 points in row 18 will give BENEFIC results for the indicated event as listed in House B. The timed event can be judged by the planets receiving the most points and the results can be experienced in the sub period of such planets. The full worksheet in color is on the next page, so that you will be able to print out the whole worksheet on one separate page and use it as a template for future charts if you choose to do it manually. Once you total up the points in Row 3, you will get the Basic Strength points of the planets for that particular event, which in this case is Marriage. ROW 4: Write the name of the planets residing in the fourth place from the planets in Row One. As you can see in the yellow shaded houses below, Jupiter is 4 houses away from the SUN, SATURN and MERCURY. Whenever you have a group of planets in one house and another planet (in this case, Jupiter) 4 houses away, select only the most malefic out of the group, meaning the one with the lowest points. ROW 5: If the planet in Row 1 has LESS than 4 points, add the points from Row 3 under the planets in Row 4. Jupiter is in the fourth place from Saturn only, or you can say that Saturn, is in the tenth house from Jupiter, either way. This is known as a ‘fourth-tenth’ house relationship. Again, according to the rule, “If two planets have an equal amount of points, then the natural malefic planet among them will get the power from the planet in the fourth place”, and as we can see, Saturn and the Sun have an equal amount of the lowest points in the house. We now have to choose which one will get the benefic points from Jupiter in the fourth house. Since the Sun is friendlier to the lord of the sign, Saturn would be the one to choose as the more natural malefic in this case. Because of this unique fourthtenth house relationship in which Jupiter has more than 4 bindus and Saturn has less than 4, we will be able to ADD the total points so far, from Jupiter in Row 3, which is 18, to the 9 points of Saturn, also in Row 3. We then put those 18 points underneath the Saturn column in Row 5. We do not have to concern ourselves

with the fact that Mercury or the Sun has less than 4 points, because they were disqualified when Saturn became the “elected” malefic to receive Jupiter’s points. ROW 6: These are the simply the total points from Rows 3 and 5. Add them to each box. ROW 7: The name of the 3rd and 11th house lords from House ‘A’ and the planets in those houses with more than 4 points. From our studies on the Upachaya Houses in Lesson 5, we know that the lord of the 3rd and the 11th house, shaded in orange below, also plays a key role in the event as well as any planets residing in those houses with more than 4 benefic points. Since these houses only act through their lords and the planets located in them, they are known as Secondary Upachaya houses and are more indirectly involved than the Main Upachaya houses are in the outcome of the event. (Remember to count the 3rd and the 11th house lords from the Upachaya Starting point, which is House ‘A’. Upachaya houses are labeled in BLUE). Saturn aspects or has ‘10th sight’ on House ‘B’, ten houses away from itself. Mars aspects House ‘A’ four houses away from it. Finally, Jupiter aspects House ‘B’ seven houses away. These are the only planets making aspects to the Main Upachaya houses and we enter them as Sa, Ma and Ju, each under their own proper columns. ROW 11: Write the points of the planets in Row 10. We can either go back to the Ashtakavarga chart and look at the natal positions for Saturn, Mars and Jupiter (in RED) to see that Saturn has 3 points, Mars has 4 points and Jupiter has 5 or we simply see the points in the chart above for each planet as well. Enter them into the worksheet under the proper columns as indicated. ROW 12: List the aspects by Benefic (+) or Malefic (-) points to Houses A, B or C (see Lesson 3). In Lesson 3, it is noted that a planet with more than 4 benefic points will aspect in the same strength, but in a malefic manner. Similarly, any planet with LESS than 4 benefic points will aspect in a benefic manner, equal to 8 minus the points of the planet. In other words, if any planet has only 2 benefic points, then its aspect will be benefic by 8-2=6 points. In this case, we can see that the Saturn has 3 bindu points in its house. This means that it will cast 5 benefic points (8-3=+5) on the 10th house, House B. Mars aspects from its own house with 4 points, since it has 4 points. Therefore, it will cast +4 points on the 2nd house, House ‘A’ as well. And finally, Jupiter who

has 5 points will cast 3 on the house it aspects. The points for each of these planets will be reflected in Row 12 of the worksheet.

Here we can see that Mars is making an 8th house aspect to the Moon and Jupiter is making a 9th house aspect to Venus. (We can also word it to say that Mars has ‘8th sight’ on the Moon and Jupiter has ‘9th sight’ on Venus.) Accordingly, we will enter Mars as Ma in the Mars column and Jupiter as Ju in the proper column in Row 14. ROW 15: Write the points of the planets in Row 14 as listed in their Ashtakavarga. List the points that Mars and Jupiter have, either by looking in the Ashtakavarga chart or by looking at the natal chart in the example. Enter the points from each planet in its proper column. ROW 16: List the aspects by Benefic (+) or Malefic (-) points from planet to planet (see Lesson 3). This is basically the same thing as in Row 12 except that Row 12 was concerned with aspects to the Upachaya Houses only. In this row, we’re concerned with Benefic (+) and Malefic (-) point aspects from planet to planet only. As you can see from the chart below, the only planet that casts an aspect to another planet here is Mars to the Moon. ROW 17: We simply add up the totals from Rows 13 and 16 and enter the final balance of the planetary strengths. ROW 18: We list the the planets sequentially in their proper order of strength with Number 1 being the Strongest and the highest in points, while Number 7 will be the weakest in strength and with the lowest in points. BRIEF ANALYSIS: From the results of the worksheet, we can now see that the planets are listed in strength from strongest to weakest, as follows:

Any planets totaling 12 or more points (in green) will be considered beneficial for a happy married life. Anything below 12 (in red) is disqualified. As to which planet will bring Marriage, we must consider this rule: The planets that are aspecting the Significator Houses will NOT come forward to give the results for an event. In this case, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter are all aspecting the Significator Houses. Mars is

below 12 points and therefore are not considered. Jupiter, although strong with 13 points is in the lagna and aspects the 7th House of B. This leaves Saturn which although is the most powerful, will not come forward because it aspects House B. Such planets can be replaced however by Samdharmi planets. The word SAMDHARMI means “of the same nature”. Mercury is Samdharmi to Saturn in this chart and has 4 points where it resides in the same house as Saturn. From the strength chart, we can easily see that Mercury is the 2nd highest planet on the list and doesn’t have any obstructions, so it CAN bring about the marriage. In fact, since it is Samdharmi to Saturn, the marriage SHOULD be performed in the MERCURY sub period. The timing of the event should always be in the sub period of one of the strong planets. The Mahadasa period lord has no effect here. The period from Dec 17, 1989 thru Oct 17, 1992 is the time of her Mercury sub period. This gives a very big “window” of time however in which to consider, since the period is very long. We then divide this time period into three sectors of equal proportions which comes out to 345 days for each division and will run like this: Dec 17, 1989 to Nov 27, 1990 (First Sector) – No delay Nov 27, 1990 to Nov 7, 1991 (Second Sector) – Moderate Delay Nov 7, 1992 to Oct 17, 1992 (Third Sector) – Full Delay For finding what sector it will fall into, we first have to find the status of the marriage, as to whether it will be an EARLY MARRIAGE, a MODERATE DELAY, or a FULL DELAY. (This will be dealt with more, in a later topic.) In analyzing the planets, we have to consider the conditions of planets in the Navamsha as well as the Rasi chart as they both have equal status. 10

As you can see in the Navamsha chart, Jupiter goes to Libra and Venus is spoiled due to its distance from the Sun. Despite being Samdharmi to Saturn, Jupiter is in the lagna of the Rasi chart and therefore aspecting the 7th house (B). Therefore it will not be able to give marriage, but will cause a delay instead. So due to the delays of Jupiter and Venus here, the marriage can’t take place in the first sector. This is a case of MODERATE DELAY, where the marriage was performed in the middle portion of the sub period of Mercury, falling in the sector of Nov 27, 1990 to Nov 7, 1991. The native got married on the 3rd of February, 1991.

LESSON 8 Samdharmi Planets and their inter-relationships Samdharmi planets are those planets that behave similar to each other or give the results of the other planet. The following planets are said to be Samdharmi. 1. When two planets are in one sign, and in one constellation, they are said to be of similar nature (Samdharmi). It means they can help each other in giving the result. 2. In the “Tenth House Theory” (see Figure 1), planet ‘A’ in the fourth place is Samdharmi to planet ‘B’ in the tenth place from it. However, ‘A’ must have more points in its ashtakavarga then ‘B’. ‘B’ being the karyesh (significator) and getting maximum points, but in case planet B aspects the significating houses, planet ‘A’ can then give the results in its sub period, even if ‘B’ gets more points.

If, in the above case, planet ‘A’ had less points then ‘B’, then planet ‘A’ would behave in a reverse way and might give adverse results if it didn’t receive more than 12 points in its final tally, as indicated in the worksheet. 4. In Figure 2, if planet ‘A’ aspects or has ‘sight’ on the significating house for an event, then the transit of the Sun can be considered relevant as it travels thru the sign and constellation of ‘A’ (In this case, the transit of the Sun through ARIES and its Nakshatra or constellation would play a very big part in the results for this particular event.)

5. Rahu and Ketu are Samdharmi to the lord of the sign and the lord of the constellation in which they are situated. Suppose Rahu is in 15 degrees of Cancer, then it is in the sign of the Moon, and in the Nakshatra of Pushya, which is the section that covers 3 deg. 20 min. – 16 deg. 40 min. of the sign Cancer and is ruled by Saturn. So it will be samdharmi to the Moon and Saturn. It can give benefic results in its sub period but only when the Moon and Saturn are both receiving more than 12 points. NOTE: Rahu and Ketu are also Samdharmi to the Navamsa lord and the planets they conjoin in the Navamsa. However, Rahu and Ketu are not Samdharmi to planets that they conjoin in the Rasi. This clarification only holds true for the Navamsa.

6. Venus and Saturn are natural 4th and 10th house lords, (being lords of the 7th and 10th signs and 11th and 2nd signs) so they are Samdharmi. In this case, if both planets are strong, then either of them can give the results if the sub period comes earlier. Similarly, Mars and Sun are Samdharmi. (Leo and Scorpio are 4:10) Moon and Mars are Samdharmi. (Aries and Cancer are 4:10) See Figure 3.

The Samdharmi planets can give the results of each other as illustrated in Figure 4. Suppose Planet ‘Q’ and ‘R’ are samdharmi and powerful. Let Planet ‘Q’ be the powerful Significator for any event of the life, and ‘Q’ is having its sight on one of the signifying houses. In such a case, the result will be experienced in the sub period of ‘R’. If ‘Q’ is a most strong significator and ‘R’ is also the 2nd or the 3rd significator, in this case also, if the sub period of ‘R’ is earlier, results may be experienced. Figure 4 12

8. We do not include the sight of the planets on the 3rd and the 11th house from the house ‘A’ (as indicated in the worksheet). If any planet with less then 4 points receives good marks and is the 2nd or 3rd significator, aspects the 3rd or the 11th houses, can come forward to give the results if the sub period of the powerful planets are long ahead.

Natural Karakas Planets are have natural significations for certain houses. These are known as karakas and are indicators of the natural characteristics exhibited by a planet, house or sign. Generally it is said that Venus is the natural karaka for Marriage or for the wife. Jupiter is for children. How it this arrived at? In our previous lessons, we learned that the eighth house from any house is the basic reason for the event indicated by the house. For example, if the 7th house signifies the marriage, then the 2nd house (eighth from the 7th) is the house which is mostly effected, so we start from the 2nd house. If we consider the natural chart of the Zodiac, where Aries is the ascendant, the eighth house lord from any house is known as the natural karaka of the house. (See Figure 5 for a few examples of this). The 8th house from the 7th is Taurus and its lord is Venus, so Venus is known as a karaka for marriage. If we count 8 from the 5th house, we arrive at the 12th house of Pisces, ruled by Jupiter, so Jupiter is known as karaka for Children.

The 6th house stands for enmity and diseases and Mars, the eighth lord from it is a karaka. The 4th house is for ‘Patal’ beneath the earth, so 11th lord Saturn is the karaka for minerals. The 3rd house denotes longevity and the eighth lord is Saturn, which is the karaka for longevity. The 2nd house The signifies knowledge (vidya) and Jupiter signifies it. Jupiter means Guru (teacher) The 1st house or individuality of a person depends upon Mars, the eighth lord, as a karaka. The 12th house, known as Moksha, bed comforts, goes to Venus for the karaka. The 11th house stands for the income and Mercury is the karaka for it. The 10th house stands for authority, and the eighth lord Sun is the karaka for it. (Some schools say the 10th house is for the father, so the Sun is also a karaka for the father. The 9th house is for the luck factor, and Moon is the karaka for it. We consider the moon sign.

If the karaka planets are debilitated, the overall results will be affected in the following ways: • Venus loses its natural power if it is within 3 degrees from the Sun. Similarly, it gives adverse results if it is more then 43 degrees from Sun. If it aspects Saturn in the above case, it behaves like an “anti- karaka”. Its karaka for marriage and bed comforts gets spoiled. • Venus in the Nakshatra of Krittika, (0 –10 degrees of Taurus) loses its karaka and becomes neutral. The aspect from Saturn again spoils it. If along with Venus, Saturn aspects one of the luminaries (Sun or Moon) , Venus loses all of its power as a karaka. Saturn is a slow moving planet and its aspect on the signifying houses delays the results. If Jupiter aspects Saturn, the delay is moderate. Both the Rasi and the Navamsha charts should be analyzed for this. • Jupiter in Libra loses all of its benefic qualities and its karaka gives the opposite effect.

• If the12 lord from the house ‘B’ is placed in house ‘B’, it spoils, or reduces the results. If Saturn is the lord of this house, the effect is even worse and will be experienced in the sub period of such a planet. • If the lord of 12th house from House ‘B’ aspects the lords of House ‘A’, House ‘B’ and House ‘C’,. the worst results will be felt in the sub period of such planets as related to house ‘B’. Example: Let Cancer be the ascendant, so the sixth lord is Jupiter. In this case, if Jupiter aspects the Sun (second lord) Saturn (7th lord) and Venus (11th lord), then in the sub period of Jupiter, the husband or the wife of the native will expire or there will be a separation of some sort (see Figure 6 below).

• If Saturn is in the fourth house from House A (as indicated in Figure 7) it will have sight on all the three significator houses. In such a case, the event is experienced late in the life. Delays may be repeated about 1.5 to 1.75 times. In such cases, while in the delay period, the event may not be experienced.

• If the natural karakas become spoiled due to any reason, the results will also be spoiled. In such cases, the event may be experienced in the sub period of the planet that gets the least points or less then 12 points. Of course, the results come out just the opposite when in the sub period of a strong significator. • If opposite house lords, such as Mars-Venus (see Figure 8), Jupiter-Mercury, SunSaturn, or Moon-Saturn are in a 2:12 (meaning 2nd/12th house relationship) or 6:8 relationship, then the results of House ‘B’, if ruled by one of the pair given above, gets some deficiencies. . . 6:8 relationships are worse then 2:12 relationships. Similarly, 4:10 relationships also denote opposition but with due respect. 3:11 relationships depend upon the difference in longitude of the two planets. If the difference is less then 40 degrees, then the results are similar to a 2:12 relationship.

Some Important Rules For Marriage 1. If any planet aspects one of the significating places, then it will not give the results of the ‘B’ house, It does not mean that it will oppose it. It only means that achievement of the results will not come to fruition in its sub period. It will continue to give the same results already achieved in House ‘B’ and will not affect it in any adverse way. 2. The natural karaka planets, if afflicted, will give results according to its affliction. For example, Venus is the karaka for the 7th house, meaning that the results will be spoiled for a husband or wife, as well as the results of the 7th house, if Venus is in Krittika. 3. A retrograde planet will enhance the results. 4. The planets receiving less then 12 points in the final tally will not have favored results in their sub periods.

5. The planets receiving more then 12 points in the final tally, will give benefic results in their sub periods. 6. Venus is the natural karaka planet for the 7th house, indicating marriage or a relationship with the opposite sex. In the Nakshatra of Krittika, it becomes the most afflicted and will spoil the results signified by the 7th house. In Ardra, Mula and Jyeshta nakshatras, it also gets spoiled. 7. If Venus (as described in # 6), is aspecting Saturn, its adverse power increases. 8. If along with Venus (as described in # 7), one of the luminaries is also in the sight of Saturn, then Venus will be spoiled even more. 9. Jupiter in Libra always gives adverse results. 10. When the planet X, is in fourth place from planet Y, and X is the lord of the 12th house from the significator house ‘B’, then Y will not give favorable results. (See Figure 9 to illustrate this example).

11. When two planets are in 4:10 combinations, and the planet in the fourth place has less points than the planet in the tenth place, it will give the results according to its nature or opposite to the nature of the planet in the tenth place. 12. The sixth lord of the chart gives adverse results for all the houses, except for the ninth and first house. 13. Any planet in opposition to Venus weakens its original nature. 14. Venus in Krittika, Ardra or the Mula nakshatras, becomes malefic for marriage and marital relations. It is especially malefic in Krittika. 15. If the above combination in #14 is aspected by Saturn, it will lose all its quality. 16., If Saturn, in the #13th or #14th, also aspects any one of the luminaries, (even in the Navamsha chart, it will totally spoil the nature of Venus. 17. Venus within 3 degrees, or more then 43 degrees from the Sun, loses its nature, and becomes malefic (particularly for marriage). 18. Planets having more points reduces the results of the houses that they aspect. 19. Only Saturn can have zero points in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 12th house if it situated in those houses. (no other planet can have zero points in the place where it is situated). 20. Mars can give zero points for 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 12th houses ONLY when it is not in those houses. 21. No planet can give zero points in the 11th house. (see Lesson 1 and the Ashtakavarga Tables) 22. Only Venus can give zero points in the 10th house, but in such cases, it is mostly spoiled. The 10th house is for authority and Work (Karma) Venus is the basic Karaka for the 7th and the 12th houses, which are mostly related to the opposite sex. If anybody is involved only in those activities, they may not be able to do anything in the life and will ignore his duties. So zero in 10th house due to Venus denotes that. 23. If there are zero points in any house by any planet, this definitely indicates some deficiencies in the life of the native. Generally marriage is the main event in the life of a native in the Indian culture. It gets spoiled due to zero points. The more zeroes, the more instability is indicated for the marital life. This also indicates multiple unstable marriages. 24. Any planet with more than 5 points in any house will give the results of the fourth and the eighth houses from that house in its sub period.

25. Generally the good result of any house is experienced in the sub period of the sixth or the tenth lords from that place. 26. If the Lord of any house situated in the 6th or the 10th from its own house with more then 5 points, it will give much better results for its own house. 27. Planets that are aspecting the sixth and tenth houses from house ‘B’ with benefic site also give better results for the ‘B’ house

LESSON 9 Vimshottari Dasa and Manual Calculations To find the timing event, we must know the period ruled by the significator planet. There are so many types of dasha systems. But I found the Vimshottari dasha most reliable. This system is based on the longitude of the Moon. The total dasa period is 120 years. The ancient sages found out the life of human beings to be 120 years. Now it is supported by scientists in the present day. They have tested a particular part of the body, and ascertained that it can work for 120 years. Now they are also in agreement that the maximum life of a person can be up to 120 years old. The total period of 120 years has been allotted to 9 grahas, I will use word “Graha” which is different than the word “planet”. “Planets” and “Stars” are the words used for heavenly bodies. Rahu and Ketu are grahas, but they are not planets. “Graha” means sources of energy, attraction, so it may be a distincton. There are inner grahas and outer grahas. “Inner grahas” means grahas between the Earth and the Sun, which includes the Sun, Mercury, Venus and the Moon. Ketu is also included in the inner grahas. Mars, Jupiter Saturn are outer grahas, and Rahu is treated as an outer graha as well. 120 years are divided in two equal parts of 60 years each and allotted to inner and outer grahas. Starting from Revati, which is ruled by Mercury, then Ketu, Venus, Sun, and Moon, allotting 17 years, 7yrs, 20 yrs, 6 yrs, and 10 years respectively for a total of 60 years . Then Outer Grahas, Mars 7 years, Rahu 18 years, Jupiter 16 years, Saturn 19 years for a total of another 60 years. • The periods, as shown in Figure 1, are known as Mahadashas (Main Periods). It is further sub divided into sub periods. The division for each of these subperiod planets is in proportion to its Mahadasha period. The first division is always that of the Mahadasha Lord. The sub period can be found from the following formula: Let M = Mahadasha period Let S = the sub lord of the mahadasha period Let s = result of sub period in decimal years, which can be converted into months and days. The formula now becomes: s=M X S divided by 120 For example, we want to find the sub period of Mercury in the Main period of Saturn. If we look at the table in Figure 1, you can see that Saturn (M) = 19 years and Mercury (S) = 17 years. s = M X S divided by 120 s = 19 X 17 divided by 120 s = 2.6916666 This converts into 2 years 8 months and 9 days. • However, there is an easier way to do this, by dividing the original formula by 10 instead of 12. This will automatically give you the number of months. Let’s see. number of months = M X S divided by 10 number of months = 19 X 17 divided by 10 number of months = 32.3 The 32.3 means 32 months and .3 of a month or 3 X 3 = 9 days We can now see that 32 months = 2 years and 8 months (plus the 9 days), which comes to the same thing as the first formula where we divided by 12. • This can be done orally also, but we must know the mahadasha period first. For example, let’s take Rahu. If we want to take the sub period of Rahu in the Mahadasa period of Rahu, we will have this: RAHU Mahadasa = 18 Rahu Subperiod = 18 Total = 324 (leave out the 4)

Leave out the last digit, which is 4, so that the remainder is 32. These are the number of months, which then converts to 2 years and 8 months. Now multiply the last digit of the number 324 by 3. It gives the days. Therefore, the subperiod of Rahu in the Rahu Mahadasa = 2 years 8 months, 12 days. • Mars sub in Mars main = 7X7 = 49 = four months and 27 days. 49 ÷ 10 = 4.9 which equals 4 months and 27 (9 X 3) days. • Sun sub in Moon main = 6 X 10 = 60 = six months and 0 days. From the above equation one can find the sub period of any planet. • Now suppose the main period of Venus starts from the 1st of Jan.,1980. It lasts for 20 years. Now we have to find the sub period of Mars in Venus main. Add the total years of Venus + Sun + Moon up to Mars = 20 + 6+ 10 = 36 . Now we have to find the start of the Mars sub period. So we multiply 36 by 20 (the main period of Venus) 36 X 20 = 720 leaving out the last digit which gives us 72 (months) = 6 years. The last digit of 720 stands for days which gives us zero days. This means that the Mars sub period will start 6 years after 1st Jan 1980 which is the 1st Jan 1986. And the Mars period will be 7 X 20 = 140 = one year 2 months. Similarly we can find the sub period of any planet in the main or Mahadasa period of any planet. The Vimshottari Mahadasa is based upon the constellation of the Moon, in which it is situated and uses the angular distance of each Nakshatra, which is 13 deg. 20 min.

EXAMPLE: Suppose the Moon is in Scorpio 18 degrees and 17 seconds. If we look at the table in Figure 2, we’ll see a conversion table that charts all planetary positions from the 0° Aries point instead of 0° from each individual sign. It will easily allow us to find out what degree of the 360° zodiac Scorpio falls on. Scan down to Scorpio in the table. It says 210°. Add the 18 degrees more from the Scorpio Moon position to 210°. Moon in Scorpio - 18 degrees 17 seconds + 210 degrees (from Conversion table next to Scorpio) = 228 degrees In order to calculate the 17 seconds into degrees, divide as follows: 17 ÷60 = 0.2833333 Together we have 228.2833333 Divide 228.2833333 by 120 to get 1.90236.

Disregard the integer to the left of the decimal to make it 0.90236. Multiply this by 9 = 8.12125. Round this off to the nearest integer which in this case comes to 8. The full integers represent the periods that have already passed. This means that the Moon is already into the next constellation, ruled by Mercury, which is in the 9th position from Ketu. (See Figure 3) As illustrated in the table in Figure 3, each planetary ruler is shown in its numbered constellation. There are 27 Nakshatras in three cycles of 9. Again the 10th constellation will be of Ketu, And 11 that of Venus and so on. If we remember the lords of the 1st to the 9th constellations, then they can easily be applied further. A good tip is to total the constellation number and find the ruler for the number of the total. For example, find the ruler of the constellation # 23. Now total 2+3 = 5. The ruler of five is Mars, and so is the number 23 mars. (Also see Figure 4) The period passed can be calculated by multiplying the decimal portion by the main period of Mercury. 0.12125 X 17 = 2.06125 years = 2 years , 0 months and 22 days have passed and 14 years 11 months and 8 days are remaining. The Dasha system is based on the Hindu Calendar which has approximately 360 days (average). In actuality, the Hindu calendar is based on the Moon and the English calendar is based on the Sun, which contains 365 days with one day added for every leap year. In the Hindu calendar some months are added or subtracted. This is known as Adhik mas (additional month) and kshaya mas (deleted month) and matches the Sun’s transit. It may be difficult to calculate the dasha system actually as per the Hindu calendar. It is much easier to follow the English Calendar for this. The maximum difference may be 18 days, if we follow the English calendar.

LESSON 10 Marriage According to Hinduism and the Catholic faith, marriage is taken as an indissoluble and sacred institution. In some Western countries, it is a contract and can be dissolved at any time. In astrology, the marriage is governed by the planetary disposition at the time of birth. The astrologer can thus read the indications and the tendencies of a happy marriage or otherwise. In Hindu mythology, the marriage can be broken down into groups as follows: 1. Devas (Gods) – This is marriage that is settled in heaven by the Gods and is ruled by Jupiter. 2. Manushya (Humans) – This means that the marriage is settled in the community by the elder persons of the family and is controlled by a strong and benefic Venus. 3. Rakshasas (Demons) – This is marriage performed against the will of the female by force and is the result of an afflicted Venus by Saturn and Mars. 4. Gandharva Vivaha – This last one can be an intercast, inter-religion or international type of marriage indicator along with the 3rd group and states that the marriage is settled between a male and female of their own free will. It is ruled by Venus and Mars, where Venus is afflicted by Mars, either by sight or association. We have already seen in last lesson that the karaka for marriage is Venus. It also governs the women, wife, sexual happiness, beauty, love making, poetry, dancing, music, singing, flowers, scents, decoration, art, etc. The marriage is mainly based on mutual attraction, physical fitness, mental quality, heredity, sexual compatibility, and social and economical status. The lagna or the ascendant governs the physical fitness, the Moon rules the emotional mind and the mental quality, and the Sun governs the spirit and the status. Hence the observation of these three is very necessary, the lagna, the Sun and the Moon. The relationship between the lord of the lagna and the lords of the house in which the Moon and the Sun are situated, as well as the lord of the seventh house from them, is a very important factor. If they are in a 5:9 or 3:11 combination it is good. If they are 4:10 combination, it is said to be moderate. A 2:12 combination can be tolerable, but 6:8 is always gives disputes.

In Figure 2, let’s suppose that the lagna lord (Mars) and the lord of 7th house (Venus) are in a 5:9 combination. That would be equal to 30 points. Similarly, the lord of the Moon sign (Mercury) and the lord of the seventh from the Moon (Jupiter) are in a 4:10 combination. This will be equal to 10 points. And finally, the lord of the sun sign (Saturn) and the seventh lord are in a 3:11 combination. This is equal to 20 points. We now have a total of 30 + 10 + 20 = 60 points. Below 50 is an indicator that there may be many disputes and difference of opinions in this marriage. Above 50 points indicates a good, happy and cooperative married life. Figure 2 12

Before finding the results of the marriage, we must find the points acquired by the above calculations in this manner. Anything totaling zero to 20 points is a reason for a delayed marriage.

The position of Venus and its lordship is also very important. It becomes spoiled (weak) in Krittika, Ardra, and the Mula nakshatras. It becomes moderately spoiled in Jyeshta. If it does not have benefic sight of Jupiter, it may give multiple relations/ marriages. Venus gets even more spoiled if it becomes associated or aspected by Saturn. Saturn is the planet that brings delay in both cases, whether it be by means of benefic or malefic sight or association. Whether we consider it benefic for a good reason or malefic for a bad reason, a delay will still be there in any case. Saturn enhances the negative qualities of Venus and if it is aspected by Jupiter, it controls and modifies the result somewhat better. The distance of Venus from the Sun is also a main factor here. Up to 3 degrees from the Sun, it loses all of its qualities. Such a Venus reduces the sex urge of the native. Up to 43 degrees from the Sun it behaves in a normal way and after 43 degrees, its qualities are enhanced as it increases the sexual feelings of the person. Mars in association with Venus causes the native to have no control over his or her sexual feelings. Saturn, if associated in this case may be a factor as well, in homosexuality. This is one of the reasons for a delay in the marriage. The more afflicted Venus becomes, the more of a delay and/or more of a chance for extramarital relations. At the extreme end, it denies marriage altogether, but gives more relationships. The Moon is the controller of the ninth house and of the mind. Its affliction by Rahu also spoils the control over the mind as well as the marriage life. Therefore, before finding the result for marriage and before coming to any conclusions, we must study the above factors very keenly.

Analyzing a Happy Married Life Here I will state some important laws for a happy married life: 1. The points in the 1st and 7th house of the Sarvashtakavarga chart should be equal or with a difference of no more than 5 points. More points in the lagna make a person more egotistical. Above 35 points in the lagna makes the person stubborn. Points of about 28 in both the first and seventh houses are good and give a good match. If the difference is more then 33% between houses, then the sexual chemistry in the husband and the wife will be reduced. The 1st house should be considered as the native himself and the 7th house as his or her spouse.

2. The combinations of the lord of the lagna, Moon sign and the Sun sign plus the lord of the 7th house from them must total more than 50 points for a normal and well adjusted married life. (as shown above in fig 1). 3. As indicated in the worksheet, all the planets must give more than 12 points and if the conditions from numbers 1, 2, and 3 are fulfilled, then the marriage will be happy. 4. To have none of the planets aspecting the A, B and C houses would be the ideal condition. If aspecting other planets, then they should have less than 4 points. 5. In the case of number 4, the number of planets aspecting the 2nd house or its lord, even if it has less than 4 points, may give that number of extra marital relations. 6. There should be no aspect of the sixth lord (the 12th from the 7th house) on the 7th house at the very least. 7. If any planet gets more points due to the aspect of the sixth lord, then the strength of the planet for a happy marriage should be considered, thereby deleting the points. 8. There should be no points accumulated by the sixth lord to any planet by aspect. 9. When the sixth lord is in the 4th or the 12th house (meaning the 10th and the 6th from the 7th house) it can reduce the marital happiness. 10. Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra and Pisces are the signs of love. A minimum of 28 points in these signs in the sarvashtakavarga brings more success to the marital life. 11. More then 4 points in the above signs by the Sun, the Moon and Venus, makes the person more romantic in his/her love life. 12. Only the sun in Pisces with more then 4 points makes the standards of the person somewhat lower and consequently love is restricted to physical contacts only. 13. More points in the 10th or 1st house, or the 8th or 6th house, although it increases the status of the person will also reduce the happiness in the married life. 14. Mars and Venus should be well posited in the chart and without the aspect of Saturn (this should also be seen in the navamsha chart). 15. The navamsha lord of the 11th house as well as the planets in the 11th house, and their positions in the chart are also indicators to look for when searching for the quality of the love life. (The 11th lord means the lord of the 10th house from the 2nd or the lord of the 5th house from the 7th).

For each and every aspect of the life there is basically one significator planet that represents it. If it is said to be “spoiled”, the event may happen in the life but the overall quality of the good result becomes weaker, and proportionately, so does the overall happiness. Actually the overall results and the date of the event are two different things altogether. These are the main factors and the general laws that contribute to a happy married life. We have a total of 15 general laws. If we give 10 points for each law that proves to be true out of those 15 and come up with a total of 60 points or more, we can say that the married life will be a satisfactory one. The more points we come up with out of a total of 150 points, the happier the marriage will be.

LESSON 11 Transits The effects of transits are also important considerations and should be figured for finding daily results. The sub-dasa is a long period and for finding the date of the event we have to consider the transit of the Sun. To find out a daily routine however, the transit of all the planets have to be taken into consideration. The Sarvastakavarga points of each house are used for this procedure. The points of each house in the Sarva chart are taken for each planet that transits that particular house and added together for each day. The average points for a day are 196. More than this means that the person will have a good day. Less than 196 points, means that there will be some worry. From this, we can easily find day to day results and calculate them for weeks, months or years in advance. Example: Let’s say a person has the following Sarva points as shown in the chart below (Figure 1), for an AQUARIUS Ascendant. Figure 1 2

Now suppose we have to find the total points of the day in question. Let’s start with January 23rd, 2001. The transiting planets for this day are shown in the Sarva chart below in RED (Figure 2), as they pass thru these particular signs. We can easily see that The Sun is in Capricorn and will take 27 points, the Moon is in Sagittarius with 31 points, Mars is in Libra with 19 points, Mercury is also in Capricorn with 27 points, Jupiter is in Taurus with 35 points, Venus is in Aquarius with 31 points, and Saturn is also in Taurus with 35 points. If we total all these points, we come up with 205 points for the day. Similarly, on the 24th of January, only the Moon will change signs into Capricorn, so the total points are 201. Figure 2 2

LESSON 12 How to Look for Signs of Divorce in a Chart Signs of divorce can be found among the following hints in these cases: 1) The ascendant lord and the 7th lord are in a 2:12 or a 6:8 relationship. 2) Venus is in the Nakshatra of Krittika, Ardra or Mula. (Jyeshta’s last degrees and Mula’s first degrees are also referred to as Mula.) 3) The difference in the Sun and Venus is more than 43 degrees and is either one of the luminaries in the aspect of Saturn. 4) Jupiter is in the ascendant with more points. 5) The sight of Jupiter has more points on the 2nd and the 7th lord. 6) There is more of a chance of divorce if Jupiter is the 6th lord in #5. (above) 7) Jupiter has less points and is situated in the 7th house. 8) The 7th lord is in the 6th house and is aspected by Saturn and/or Mars, which is having more points. 9) The sixth lord is with its significator, or the sixth lord is in the 4th house. 10) If the Karyesh (significator) is in the 4th place from the sixth lord. Generally, when more than one marriage is indicated, the first marriage is performed in the sub of the sixth lord. When the marriage life of any person is indicated as unhappy, the marriage is usually performed in the sub period of the significator planet and having less points or it may be in the sub period of the lord of the 12th from House ‘B’.

LESSON 13 The Effects of Venus and Points in All Twelve Signs As we have learned so far, the many combinations of planets in any sign plus the points acquired by each planet can have a big effect on the results that follow. The following examples will show Venus in all twelve signs and give a good guideline as to what to expect when interpreting this planet in the natal chart. 1. Venus in ARIES: If Venus has 8 points in this sign, it is an indicator for extra marital relations as well as prostitution. The native (Jatak) can lose his/her money, his/her position in life and further destroy his/her chances of succeeding any further in life. If there are 7 points here, the effect is reduced and 6 points nullifies this effect altogether. The yoge (event) can be possible only in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, and 11th houses. In any other house, Venus cannot get 8 points. 2. Venus in TAURUS: If more than 6 points are in this sign with Venus, it is an indicator of more than one marriage, whether it be legal or illegal. 3. Venus in GEMINI: If Venus has more than 5 points here in this sign, it is an indicator of more sex appeal. 4. Venus in CANCER: If there are more than 6 points here, there are two marriages indicated and the pleasures of too much “wine and women” may be the cause of some illness. 5. Venus in LEO: If there are more than 5 points here, the person will enjoy the company of the opposite sex and try to make them happy. 6. Venus in VIRGO: With more than 6 points here, the person likes to talk with the opposite sex and will have more contacts with people doing lower grade work. 7. Venus in LIBRA: More points here indicates happiness and the ability to achieve the things one wants to do in life. 8. Venus in SCORPIO: If there are more than 6 points here, the person will have relations with other married members of the opposite sex and due to foolish indiscretions, will suffer losses in the life.

9. Venus in SAGITTARIUS: The more points here, the more happiness. It is also an indicator of a good character. 10. Venus in CAPRICORN: If there are more than 6 points in this sign, there will be contact with women/men of low mentality who will take emotional hold of him/her. 11. Venus in AQUARIUS: Venus here with more than 6 points indicates relations with married people of the opposite sex. 12. Venus in PISCES: A lot of points in this sign is an indicator of a person who doesn’t fall in love so much as enjoying the physical act of sex itself. Other effects due to Venus in different houses: 1. If the sign of Leo is in the 7th house and Venus has more than 5 points in the 7th house, the person is very trustful with his spouse. 2. If Venus gives more points in the 5th house, there is more of a chance for a female child, taking into consideration the other planets also. 3. In the place where the 7th lord is situated, if Venus is there and gives more than 5 points, the person has much interest in the sexual act. If Mars or Saturn also gives more points in the same place, the spouse of the person is hard hearted and perhaps a bit mentally unbalanced. 4. If Venus, along with Mercury, is in the fifth house with more points, the person can be much too talkative which sometimes ends in quarrels due to this habit. 5. If Mercury in the above case is the lord of the 3rd house, the person talks meaningless nonsense. 6. If Jupiter is in the 7th house with more points, the life partner is very beautiful or handsome and has a very good character. If with 8 points, the partner is very lucky. 7. If Venus is in the 7th house with Mars/Saturn and has more points, the life partner is a lot more hot tempered. 8. If Saturn gives more than 5 points for the place where Venus is situated, the person is very truthful, has good self-confidence and rises due to his/her own efforts. 9. If the above yoge (#8) is in the 7th house, the person gets a very cooperative spouse, who is hard working and thrifty. 10. If the above yoge (#9) is in a female chart, then the partners do not have confidence in each other.

LESSON 14 Love Marriages A “Love Marriage” may be viewed as a mutual agreement or contract between a male and a female. The fifth house and the lord of the tenth and second houses have an important role over the lovemaking. Therefore, their influence will be felt in a marriage resulting out of love and affection. When Venus is aspected by Saturn or Rahu, or if Venus is situated with them, the person has opportunities to be acquainted with females as a result of sexual attraction. When the lords of the 4th and the 12th houses become linked with the lords of 2nd and the 10th houses, either by association or by sight, there definitely becomes a chance for a love affair with the opposite sex.

In Figure 1, Venus is the lord of the fourth house and is aspected by 10th lord Mars. The 12th lord is also in association with the 2nd lord Sun. Any chart having similar combinations definitely has the ingredients for a love affair. If in such a case Venus is aspected by Saturn, there will be more then one affair. If Mars were to have sight or association with Saturn, the end of such an affair will be a heartbreaking experience for the native.

The association of Mars and Venus increases the tendency for having love affairs, as the attraction towards the opposite sex increases. If such a combination aspects or has sight of Saturn, then the attraction increases even more. A strong significator, as calculated from the work sheet, gives extra marital relations if it aspects Saturn. One must note that the Rashi and the Navamsha chart have equal importance, so both charts must be consulted. The tenth and the second lords, if they get more points in the work sheet for marriage, also gives extra marital relations in their sub periods. If the sixth lord makes aspects or associations in the above combinations, the affair is restricted and does not lead to marriage. When Saturn or Mars is in the 2nd, 7th or 12th house (it can be in any one place, actually, but especially in these houses) and has a total of zero points, this also indicates the discontinuation of such relationships. Mars with zero points in the fourth house gives similar results as well as Rahu, which has 2nd, 5th, 7th and 9th sight. So, if Rahu is situated in either the 1st, 5th, 7th, 9th or 12th houses from Venus, it gives similar results. The above rules are universal. There are also many other combinations, but they have many “if’s and but's”. _______________________________________________________________

Who can have a good friendship? (This portion can be applied to friendships of both the same sex as well as opposite sexes.) 1. If the two charts are overlapped one on top of the other, the Mars of one chart should aspect or should be in the same house where the Venus of other chart is placed. 2. This should be checked in the rashi chart also. The sign of Venus in one chart and the sign of Mars in the other should have similar combinations.

3. The Saturn and/or Rahu of one chart should be found in association with the Venus of the other chart by house or by sign. 4. The sight of Saturn and/or Rahu should be on the Venus of other chart (this should be checked by house and sign) 5. If the Sun and the Moon of two charts exchange houses or signs, a close friend ship is indicated. 6. If Venus and Mars are in the same Navamsha, or the Navamsha lord is the same, this also indicates a close friendship.

LESSON 15 Procedure for Finding Any Event for the Date Given There are many times when charts come to us as a Blind Analysis, where we have to try and figure out what happened on such and such an event date. The following set of procedures should be learned and followed and with a little practice, one can perfect their analytical skills to a remarkable degree using Krushna’s Ayanamsha. 1. Cast the chart for the person using his date of birth, place of birth and time. Don’t forget to apply Krushna’s Ayanamsha ONLY. This is the most important rule, because the results will be more accurate. I recommend this ayanamsha for any system for better results. 2. Find the Vimshottari Mahadasha and the Sub Dasha. 3. Find the Main period Lord and the sub period lord on the date of the event. 4. Find out which houses have lordship of the main period lord (the Mahadasa lord). Also find its Samdharmi. The result is generally linked with the karaka (the significator) of the main period lord or its samdharmi. It can also represent the house where it is situated. 5. Find the house(s) that the sub period lord rules and the house where it is situated. The sub period lord generally gives the results of the 4th or the 8th house from the its own house position or the 4th or 8th house from its situation. If any planet aspects houses A,B or C, then its samdharmi will give the result of the event. 6. Look at all the houses for which the sub lord can possibly give the result as well as the karaka (significator) related to the main lord by using House “B” as a sort of dial in which you move it around the chart and interpret the subsequent Upachaya patterns (Houses A, B, C, D and E) from different viewpoints. As an example, we will take the case given as Exercise 5 (also known as ABA 1, referred to by Mr. Ron Gaunt). This is a chart of a female. Her birth data is as follows: April 6, 1975 5:25am Time Zone: -5:30 (IST) India (17N42, 74E00) Ayanamsha is 22:29:21 Lagna should be 2 PIS 58. She married on the 28th of June, 1997. The main dasa period running on June 27, 2000 was that of RAHU. Its sub period was the MOON. As you can see in the above chart, Rahu in the Rasi Chart is situated in the 9th house which is House ‘A’ for the longevity of the husband. The Moon is situated in House ‘D’ with 6 points and becomes eager to give the results for this event. Since the Moon is the sub period lord it can give the result if we focus House “B” on the 8th, the 12th, the 2nd and the 6th houses and look at the various relationships of the Upachaya houses to each other. Remembering that the 8th house lord from any house is known as the Natural Karaka of that house, we can see that for the 8th house, (Libra), the karaka goes to Venus; for the 12th house (Aquarius), the Karaka is Mercury; for the 2nd house, Aries, the Karaka goes to Mars or Rahu; and for the 6th house of Leo, the Karaka is Jupiter. The Main period Lord of Rahu represents Mars here so only the 2nd house is being taken into consideration. The Moon and Mars are natural Samdharmi, meaning that their house rulers are ‘naturally’ 4 houses away from each other. (look above at the 2nd and the 5th houses). They can give results for each other, but since the sub period is the Moon, it will take first preference over Mars for that result.

The 2nd house represents the family, the death of the husband, etc.. Now, considering family matters, the Moon is a weak significator for these things, including the longevity of the husband. On the day of the event, the Sun was transiting the sign of Gemini, which is ruled by Mercury and in the constellation of Rahu, which is situated in the 9th house of the husband’s longevity, bringing the focus to this particular area of the life, as Rahu is the Main Mahadasa lord. If we re-focus house ’B’ on the 8th house, we will notice that the Moon rules House ‘D’ and will be eager to give results for this area of the life which focuses on longevity. If we re-focus House ’B’ on the 12th house, we will notice that the Moon (the sub period lord) rules House ‘E’, who is also eager to give results for this area of the life, dealing with losses. We can take this to mean that in the Moon sub period as the lord of the 5th in the Rasi chart, results can be linked to the 8th and the 12th houses of loss and sorrow. Studying other factors, the Natural Karaka of marriage is Venus and it is in Krittika, which spoils the marital happiness. Its position in the 2nd house is also bad. Mercury is more powerful for marriage as it receives points from Saturn from the 4th house, but in spite of that, it has nothing to do with this current period. So it can be assumed that in the Moon sub period, it will be bad for the longevity of the husband and we can surmise that she will either separate from her husband during this time period or he will pass away. As it happened, the husband passed away on this date, very suddenly and unexpectedly due to a brain hemorrhage. Similar analysis procedures can be followed using any blind chart.

LESSON 16 Procedure for Placing the Event in the Length of the Bhutki Up until now, we have understood that any event will occur either under the influence of the powerful significators in the chart, or in the sub period of the lords of either House D or House E. The main period is that of the karaka planet or its Samdharmi. The sub period of the planets however are of various and different lengths. It is very important to narrow this time period down in order to zoom in on the happening of the event itself. There are several rules for doing this as follows: 1) Look to see if all of the lords of A, B and/or C houses are aspected by Saturn, or 2) if these lords are placed with Saturn, or 3) if Saturn itself is one of the lords and others too are in its aspect This must be seen from the Rashi chart and/or the Navamsha chart as both of them have equal status. If rules 1 thru 3 are in effect, then the event will be late or delayed. This means we have to divide the entire time length of the sub period into three equal parts. The event will take place in the third part of this sub period. 4) If such is the case that the lords are aspected by Jupiter also, or Saturn is in the aspect of Jupiter, then the event will take place in the 2nd part of the sub period. 5) If ONLY Jupiter alone is aspecting these lords, the events will take place in the first part of the sub period. This means that Saturn, the delay causing planet, is not aspecting, or the significating planet is not having any relation with Saturn (not in the Navamsha of Saturn or sign or constellation ruled by Saturn). 6) The lord of the sign and the constellation of the sub period lord, (Significator) are also responsible for either an early event or a delay in the timing. Slow moving planets will delay the event, while the faster moving planets will give the result early. (This should be applied for the length of the time of the sub period only) 7) The Moon is the fastest moving planet and Saturn is the slowest. The order of speed for the planets from fastest to slowest are: Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Rahu/ Ketu and Saturn. Moon, Sun and Mercury will give the results in the first third of the equally divided dasha period. Venus and Mars will give the results in the 2nd part, and Rahu, Ketu and Saturn will give the results

in the 3rd part. Jupiter is the exception here in that it will give the result in the earlier part of the sub period. 8) The Navamsha Lord of the significator lord should also be considered. 9) If, for example, one lord is fast moving and other is slow moving, then the timing should be made accordingly and the average value should then be taken.

Let’s take the Venus sub period within a Venus Main period for an example. The Venus Main period lasts 40 months. If we take 1/3 of 40, it will equal approximately 13 months for each 1/3 of a time span. In this way, we can narrow down our possibilities and fine tune the prediction for the event. We should check to make sure that: 1) Venus does not aspect or have any connections with either Saturn or Jupiter. 2) Since the last four signs of the zodiac are ruled by either Jupiter or Saturn, this means that Venus shouldn’t be in any of these signs or this will delay the event to a later sub period in the dasa. 3) It shouldn’t be in any of the constellations ruled by either Saturn or Jupiter. 4) So if Venus is the significator and it is in the sign and constellation of the Sun, Moon or Mercury, for example, then we can narrow down the results to the first part of the sub period that we have divided into three equal parts. 5) Specific constellations are bad for Venus, (particularly for marriage). They are Krittika, Ardra, Jyeshta and Mula. They spoil the nature of Venus and bring unfavorable results. Another example would be that of the Sun. The maximum amount of time length for that of the Sun’s Main period (Sun subperiod) lasts 3 months and 18 days. (as seen in RED below). By dividing it up into 3 parts, we will have 3 time spans of 1 month, 6 days each. The event happens when the Sun transits in the other powerful significator’s sign or constellation. (This can also be reviewed in Lesson 9. which covers manual calculations of the time periods as well). LESSON 17 Blind Chart Analysis ABA-6 EXERCISE OVERVIEW: These are charts of two separate females, no relation between them. One of them passed away on one of the following dates. The other one’s husband passed away on the remaining date. The idea is to place the proper date with the proper event and chart. This means that the chart whose husband passed away must have had less of a happy marriage life than the other one. If we study both the charts, we can find out which one this is. The following procedure should be adopted: STEP 1: Cast the charts using Krushna’s Ayanamshas. STEP 2: Find the Main Period Lords and the Sub lord periods for each chart. (which in this case is the same as Step 3) STEP 3: Find the Main Period Lords and the Sub lord periods for the date of the events. STEP 4: Go to the house of the Main Period Lord (Mahadasa) and find its Samdharmi. The result is generally linked with the Karaka of the main period lord or its Samdharmi. It can be in the house where it is placed. STEP 5: Find the house(s) that the sub period lord rules and the house where it is placed. The sub period lord generally gives the results of the 4th or 8th house position from it or the 4th or 8th house from its placement. If any planet aspects houses A,B or C, then its Samdharmi will give the result of the event. STEP 6: Look at all the houses for which the sub lord can possibly give the result as well as the Karaka related to the main lord by using House “B” as a sort of dial and rotate it around the chart to interpret the different Upachaya patterns that result. (You can download Krushna’s Upachaya Program in the FILES section for easily reading and interpreting these different Upachaya patterns in any of the twelve signs at a glance!) - Venus for Chart 1 is the lord of the 3rd and the 8th house and resides in the 9th house. - The sub lord Moon is the lord of 5th house and situated in the 9th house. - Similarly the sub lord, Mars, is lord of 2nd house and 9th house. - The main lord or its samdharmi represents the karkatva (significators) of the houses. In this case the main lord Venus indicates karkatva for the 8th house (B) and 1st house due to its lordship and also the 2nd house due to its placement in the 9th house. - The 8th house indicates death, 1st house indicates individuality, and 2nd house can indicate the longevity of husband. Therefore we can say that both the events can be indicated in the Mahadasha of Venus. Venus is in the Jyeshta constellation, and is with Saturn and the Moon, which may indicate less marital happiness. Now if we look at the Sub lords for the 2nd house in order to check for the ‘death of the husband’ as an option, both Mars and the Moon have 2 and 14 points, respectively, (see Figure 4, line 2, highlighted in blue), while Mercury and Saturn have double the total points. (Mercury and Saturn rule Houses D and E when the B House is re-focused on the 2nd) Furthermore, both Mars and Moon do not play the role of lord of House D and E in the 2nd house focus, so the death of husband can not be expected in this period. Now if we change the House B focus to the 8th house, the Moon is the lord of house ‘D’ and Mars is placed in house ‘E’ . For the result of the 8th house, the Moon is the significator having a total of 20, the highest point value for that line. (see Figure 4,

highlighted in pink line). This situation can give the results of the 8th house in the Moon sub period on 15th April 91. Mars doesn’t have more points, so if it concerns the death of the native, it can be possible in the subperiod of the Moon.

On the dates given, the main period is of that of Ketu with sub periods of Venus and the Sun. Ketu is situated in the 9th house, so can have karkatva of the 2nd house. It also represents Jupiter and Mercury, because Ketu is in the Nakshatra of Purnavasu, which is ruled by Jupiter and Mercury rules the 9th. Jupiter is the lord of the 3rd house so it is the karkatva of the 8th and as a lord of the 6th house it is karaka for the 11th. It is situated in the 9th house, so again it can have karakatva of the 2nd house. The sub lord Venus, is the lord of house ‘E’ , (which is Taurus when you rotate the B House for the 8th house focus), and the other optional sub lord, the Sun, is the lord of house D when we rotate the B House to 2nd house matters. By their placements, Venus and Sun both are in house E for the result of 2nd house. (Figure 3) In considering the total points for the 8th house, the Moon has more points, (see Figure 5, 8th house row) while for the 2nd house results, Mars has the maximum amount of points. (see Figure 5, pink row, highlighted in blue). Mars is natural samdharmi to the Sun. So being the lord of house D for 2nd house matters and being samdharmi to Mars, it can give the result. For this chart, Venus is in the Krittika constellation and aspected by Saturn while Saturn also aspects the Sun. This spoils Venus, particularly for marriage. Jupiter in the navamsha chart is in Libra, which also reduces the longevity of the marriage. Zero points by Saturn for the house having karkatva for the husband’s longevity also indicates the same thing.

Now since we have justified one date for the death of the native of chart 1, we are left with only one other date, the 17th of July, 1992, which means the Sun sub period in the Ketu Main. The Karaka of the 2nd house is situated in the 12th house from 7th. My conclusion is in red in the table above. The native died herself on April 15, 1991 in a Venus-Moon dasa and the other female lost her husband on July 17, 1992 in a Ketu- Sun dasa. In the following charts from the worksheet (ver 4.09), you can see that the numbers at the left hand side indicate House’B’ placements from 1 to 12 indicating the houses in the chart. The numbers to the right are the final point totals of the significators for each house chart row. Red numbers indicate lower than 12 in point totals which brings in negative results. If the point totals are 12 or over, they can bring in beneficial results. The lines showing each event is noted in pink highight.
