He l e a r n s to d e p e n d m o r e o n h i s o w n j u d g m e n t , b e c a u s e h i s j u d g m e n t is m o r e d e p e n d a b l e . Judgment- is a v e r y i n t e r e s t i n g p h a s e o f h u m a n b e h a v i o r . We u s u a l l y r e f e r to it as s i m p l y o n e o f the m i n o r a t t r i b u t e s a p e r s o n h a s o r t h a t he lacks. H o w e v e r , j u d g m e n t is t h e c r u x o f b e h a v i o r . Our total existence depends on judgment. Without g o o d judgment, a p erson f l o u n d e r s , s t u m b l e s t h r o u g h life, e x p e r i e n c e s f a i l u r e a f t e r f a i l u r e w i t h a l l it s a t t e n d i n g m i s e r y a n d r e g r e t . - G o o d j u d g m e n t , o n the o t h e r h a n d , b r i n g s c o n s t r u c t i v e m e a s u r e s i n t o a p e r s o n ’s life, a n d f r i e n d s , success, happiness. * T h i s is e a s i e r to see if we s t o p to t h i n k f o r a m o m e n t t h a t o u r l i v e s a r e m a d e u p o f m o m e n t s of- d e c i s i o n . T h e r e is a c o n s t a n t n e e d f o r judgment--to decide this way or that w a y - - t h r o u g h o u t each w a k i n g moment. Prom, m a k i n g p u r c h a s e s to m a k i n g f r i e n d s , f r o m p r e p a r i n g m e a l s to w r i t i n g l e t t e r s , f r o m w a l k i n g t h r o u g h the h o u s e to b r u s h i n g y o u r tee t h , y o u ar e c o n s t a n t l y j u d g i n g - - m a k i n g d e c i s i o n s . A n d as y o u r j u d g m e n t goes,, so g o e s y o u r life. T h e f a c t t h a t l i f e is f i l l e d w i t h so m a n y r e g r e t s s h o w s e r r o r s of j u d g m e n t . T h e f a c t t h a t l i f e is a3 o r d e r l as it is f o r m o s t o f us s h o w s u s e o f m u c h g o o d j u d g m e n t . It is a p p a r e n that t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of g o o d j u d g m e n t in a n y a c t i v i t y s h o u l d r e c e i v e the d e e p e s t c o n s i d e r a t i o n . F o r if in t h e h u n d r e d s o f m i n o r d e c i s i o n s we m a k e e a c h d a y we f o l l o w o n l y t h a t p a t h w h i c h is m o s t b e n e f i c i a l a n d c o n s t r u c t i v e , w o h a v e in e s s e n c e a l r e a d y m a s t e r e d t h e f o r c e s o f o u r environment.

K ovj c a n j u d g m e n t b e d e v e l o p e d - - i m p r o v e d ? The R o s i c r u c i a n lessons lay gr e a t emphasis on exercises that b r i n g about a g r a d u a l m a s t e r y of this p h a s e of h u m a n b e h a v i o r . A g a i n - - t h e s e c r e t l i e s in the d e v e l o p m e n t o f t h e i n t u i t i v e f a c u l t y w h i c h l i e s d o r m a n t in e v e r y o n e .

E x p e r i e n c e , o f c o u r s e , aids j u d g m e n t , as d o e s t h e s t u d y o f a n y s u b j e c t . B u t we a r e l i m i t e d in the n u m b e r o f e x p e r i e n c e s we c a n h a v e in a l i f e ­ time, a n d study, b y it s v e r y n a t u r e , is l i m i t e d in d e v e l o p i n g j u d g m e n t . S t u d y is n o t r e a l e n o u g h to s u b s t i t u t e f o r e x p e r i e n c e a n d is g e n e r a l l y o n l y a g u i d e to s e r v e u3 in g a i n i n g e x p e r i e n c e . But our judgment f or t h e m o s t p a r t , w i t h o u t the a i d o f o u r i n t u i t i v e f a c u l t y , is b a s e d o n experience. F o r e x a m p l e , if y o u a r e in an a u t o m o b i l e a n d a r e a p p r o a c h ­ i n g a n i n t e r s e c t i o n , e x p e r i e n c e d e t e r m i n e s y o u r j u d g m e n t in c r o s s i n g that intersection. Y o u w i l l s l o w down, s p e e d up, o r m a k e n o c h a n g e i n s p e e d d e p e n d i n g on what you k n o w about that i n t e r s e c t i o n or i n t e r s e c ­ tions of that k i n d generally. R e a d i n g a b o u t h o w to a p p r o a c h i n t e r ­ s e c t i o n s w o u l d h e l p y o u to p r e p a r e f o r t h e a c t u a l e x p e r i e n c e , b u t o n l y previous experience would improve your judgment. I

Now le t us see h o w a n i n t u i t i v e s e n s e o r f a c u l t y c a n i m p r o v e o r e v e n g u a r a n t e e o u r j u d g m e n t f a r m o r e t h a n a n y p r e v i o u s t o o l s at o u r d i s ­ posal. Let's use a n o ther example. If y o u c o n t e m p l a t e d the p u r c h a s e o f a f r u i t tree, y o u r e x p e r i e n c e c o u l d h e l p d i r e c t y o u to a g o o d nursery. Y o u r e x p e r i e n c e m i g h t e v e n n e l p y o u to j u d g e the t r e e b y t h e l e n g t h o f its r o o t s , t h e s h a p e o f its b r a n c h e s , o r b y some o t h e r p h y s i c a l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s that y o u k n e w to b e a s s o c i a t e d w i t h a h e a l t h y t ree. I f y o u b o u g h t a t r e e a c c o r d i n g to y o u r o b j e c t i v e s c r u t i n y o f it, y o u k n o w t h a t t h e r e is s t i l l n o r e a l g u a r a n t e e t h a t It w i l l r e m a i n h e a l t h y , b e a r g o o d fruit, and provide a fine b l a n k e t of shade. In a f e w y e a r s ’ t i m e th e t r e e m i g h t d i e - - i t .m i g h t b e a r l i t t l e f r u i t - - i t m i g h t n o t develop into a shade tree--it might become infested with disease. How c o u l d y o u p o s s i b l y k n o w this w h e n * y o u f i r s t b u y a s e e d l i n g ? B e f o r e I c o n t i n u e w i t h th e o b v i o u s a n s w e r , let m e p o i n t o u t t h a t m o s t o f y o u a l r e a d y f o l l o w h u n c h e s in a g r e a t n u m b e r o f y o u r d a i l y a f f a i r s * W h e n b u y i n g th e tree, y o u m a y h a v e s e e n o r f e l t o n e w h i c h s e e m e d to b e just, r i g h t . T r ue, y o u m a y h a v e b e e n c a s u a l l y o b s e r v i n g t h e r o o t s , g e n e r a l a p p e a r a n c e , a n d so on, b u t in a d d i t i o n to y o u r o b s e r v a t i o n w a 3 t h i s f e e l i n g - - t h e f e e l i n g t h a t t h i s w a s a good, h e a l t h y tree. This f e e l i n g , o f w h i c h w e a r e a l r e a d y so o f t e n a w a r e in o u r d e a l i n g s w i t h o t h e r s a n d w i t h t h i n g s , is the i n t u i t i v e s e n s e at w o r k . W h e n it is t h e r e y o u a r e u s u a l l y p r e t t y s u r e a b o u t w h a t y o u a r e d o ing. N o w , to d i r e c t t h i s s e n s e - - t o h a v e it a l w a y s at h a n d w h e n e v e r y o u h a v e to c h o o s e , decide, or judge--to hav e a deep e r insight Into w h a t e v e r y o u are e x p e r i e n c i n g - - t h i s is the m i r a c l e o f i n t u i t i v e l i v i n g . W h a t e x a c t l y is i n t u i t i o n — w h a t is the i n t u i t i v e f a c u l t y - - a n d h o w i3 it p o s s i b l e to d e v e l o p it? T h e i n t u i t i v e f a c u l t y h a s o f t e n b e e n

r e f e r r e d to, a l l c g o r i c a l l y a n d h i s t o r i c a l l y , as the s i x t h sense, o r the t h i r d eye. F r o m a n c i e n t l e g e n d s we f i n d t h a t w r i t e r s t r i e d to p i c t u r e t h i s f a c u l y - - t h i s g r e a t a w a r e n e s s - - b y i n v e n t i n g t a l e s of m o n s t e r s o r m a g i c i a n s w h o w e r e s a i d to h a v e a n a c t u a l t h i r d eye in t h e c e n t e r o f t h e f o r e h e a d o r a s p e c i a l p h y s i c a l o r g a n in t h e r e g i o n of th f o r e h e a d not o u t w a r d l y visible. It is true, as y o u w i l l - f i n d in the. R o s i c r u c i a n le ssons, i f y o u b e c o m e a member, that there are certain glands that are d i r ectly a s s o c i a t e d with this faculty, and that the g r a d u a l s t i m u l a t i o n of these glands b r i n g s a b o u t th e d e v e l o p m e n t o f t h e i n t u i t i v e s e n s e . But w e m u s t n o t i m a g i n e th e s o - c a l l e d s i x t h s e n s e to b e a s e n s e o r g a n in the same w a y as a r e o u r eyes, ears, o r n o s e . T h e s i x t h sense, o r i n t u i t i v e faculty is r e a l l y o u r t o t a l a w a r e n e s s to t h e s u b t l e t i e s - - t h e t r u e n a t u r e - - o f a n o t h e r thing, p e r s o n , o r s i t u a t i o n . T h i s a w a r e n e s s is n o t o n l y o f the n a t u r e o f t h i n g s , b u t o f the t o t a l c o m p l e x o f t h i n g s as t h e y a f f e c t us. T hus, w h i l e a r e d d r e s s w o u l d a p p e a r r e d to e v e r y o n e , it w o u l d e n g e n ­ d e r d i f f e r e n t f e e l i n g s in e a c h p e r s o n x%ho b e h e l d it. Their feeling-t h e i r i n t u i t i v e i m p r e s s ion--xvould b e g u i d e d n o t o n l y b y t h e n a t u r e a n d q u a l i t y o f th e d r e s s i t s e l f , b u t b y h o w it w o u l d a f f e c t t h e p e r s o n b u y i n g it. T h e i n t u i t i v e i m p r e s s i o n is a t o t a l i m p r e s s i o n . It t a k e s all f a c t o r s into co n s i d e r a t i o n w i t h o u t thcij&iit processors involved. It c o n t a i n s w i t h i n it t h e q u a l i t y o f f o r e s i g h t , f o r in s e n s i n g t h e t o t a l o f the p r e s e n t , it f o r e s e e s h o w o n e w o u l d b e a f f e c t s in t h e f u t u r e . To b e t t e r u n d e r s t a n d the p r o c e s s o f i n t u i t i o n , w e m u s t f i r s t u n d e r ­ s t a n d t h e p r o p e r t i e s of o u r p h y s i c a l e n v i r o n m e n t . A l l t h i n g s are v i b r a t o r y in nature,' a l l t h i n g s t h a t w e are, o r c a n be, a w a r e o f we k n o w o n l y b y th e v i b r a t i o n s that c o m e f r o m t h e m a n d t h a t i m p r e s s o u r consciousness. W h i l e w e a r e u s u a l l y a w a r e o n l y o f the l i g h t , sound, olfactory, or c o m m o n vibrations ’ that are e m i t t e d by a substance, there a r e m a n y o t h e r kinds, of v i b r a t i o n s e m i t t e d b y e a c h s u b s t a n c e that, if we c o u l d p e r c e i v e them, w o u l d a d d to o u r t o t a l u n d e r s t a n d i n g o f the substance. T h o u g h t s , e m o t i o n s , d i s e a s e - - a l l t h e s e too a r e v i b r a t o r y in n a t u r e a n d ar e e m i t t e d in a c o n s t a n t s t r e a m f r o m p e o p l e o r t h i n g s . "If we b u t h a d e y e s to s e e , ” th e o l d s a y i n g g o e s . Now, b e c a u s e we t o o are v i b r a ­ t o r y i n n a t u r e - - a n d f r o m us, o u r e n v i r o n m e n t , o u r f a m i l y t h e r e are b e i n g e m i t t e d v i b r a t i o n s o f m a n y d i f f e r e n t k i n d s - - t h e r e is a c o n s t a n t m e e t i n g of v i b r a t o r y m o t i o n of one k i n d or a nother between o u r s e l v e s a n d the w o r l d a r o u n d us. If we t h i n k o f t h i s s t r e a m o f v i b r a t i o n s b e i n g e m i t t e d f r o m u s o r o u r e n v i r o n m e n t as. a m a g n e t i c f i e l d , we c a n b e t t e r v i s u a l i z e w h a t h a p p e n s as t h e s e v i b r a t i o n s m e e t w i t h o t h e r s f r o m d i f f e r e n t s o u r c e s . Either

o f tw o t h i n g s w i l l o c c u r : t h o s e t h a t h a r m o n i z e w i t h o u r o w n w i l l be a t t r a c t e d to us. T h o s e t h a t do n o t h a r m o n i z e x^ith o u r o w n w i l l be r e p e l l e d by us. This very n a t u r a l attraction or r e p u l s i o n engenders the f e e l i n g s w h i c h are a r o u s e d in u s vrtien we s a y w e l i k e s o m e t h i n g o r we d o n ' t l i k e s o m e t h i n g o r s o m e b o d y . It i s n ’t n e c e s s a r i l y a m a t t e r of b e i n g g o o d or* bad, e i t h e r , but r a t h e r o f b e i n g g o o d o r b a d f o r y o u at this m o m e n t . S i n c e a l l t h i n g s ch a n g e , w h a t y o u m a y be o u t o f h a r m o n y w i t h t o d a y , y o u m a y r e s p o n d to m o r e f a v o r a b l y t o m o r r o w . A n d so it g o e s , The utter c o m p l e x i t y o f th e n a t u r e o f a n y t h i n g o u t r e a c h e s a n y p o s s i b i l i t y o f o u r a n a l y z i n g it f u l l y w i t h o n l y o u r o b j e c t i v e s e n s e f a c u l t i e s . But i n t u i ­ t i v e l y we c a n k n o w al l we m u s t k n o w to c o r r e c t l y j u d g e t h e thin g s , s i t u a t i o n s , o r p e o p l e w i t h w h o m we deal, f o r t h e i n t u i t i v e f a c u l t y is o u r r e s p o n s e to th e t r u e a n d f u l l n a t u r e o f a t h i n g as w e s e n s e the in t e r a c t i o n of vibretions that pass b etween ours e l v e s a n d others. To r e f e r a g a i n to o u r p r e v i o u s e x a m p l e - - t h e c o n t e m p l a t e d p u r c h a s e o f a fruit tree--if y o u n o w c o m b i n e d y o u r intuitive sense w i t h your p r e ­ v i o u s e x p e r i e n c e , y o u w o u l d be f a r m o r e c e r t a i n o f s e l e c t i n g a t r e e s u i t a b l e to y o u r n e e d s . R e m e m b e r t h i s l a s t s t a t e m e n t at a l l t i m e s - s u i t a b l e to_ y o u r n e e d s . By b e i n g s u i t a b l e to y o u r n e e d s , I a m i n f e r ring that you r choice of a tree t h r o u g h intuitive d i r e c t i o n will take c o u n t n o t o n l y the p r e s e n t s t a t e o f the t r e e i t s e l f , b u t w h a t y o u e x p e c t f r o m t h e tree, w h a t c a r e y o u w i l l g i v e it, w h a t e n v i r o n m e n t it w i l l h a v e , a n d so one All these factor3--like information thrown into a giant electronic c o m p u t e r - - w i l l be considered, sorted, and i n c l u d e d in the a n s w e r y o u r e c e i v e i n s t a n t a n e o u s l y . We h a v e i l l u s t r a t e d j u d g m e n t in the p u r c h a s e o r a c q u i s i t i o n o f t h i n g s . P e r h a p s e v e n m o r e i m p o r t a n t is the v a l u e o f t h e i n t u i t i v e s e n s e in d e t e r m i n i n g cur judgment of situations and persons. A s i t u a t i o n too h a s a v i b r a t o r y c o m p l e x , an a u r a p e r m e a t i n g it w h i c h w i l l w e l c o m e u s to it o r w a r n u s away. And of course pe o p l e have a v i b r a t o r y complex derived f r o m their state of health, their general physi c a l condition, their mentality, their thoughts, their character and personality. It is to t h i s t h a t w e r e s p o n d as i n d i v i d u a l s . In o u r c h o i c e o f f r i e n d s or b u s i n e s s a c q u a i n t a n c e s , in o u r c h o i c e o f h u s b a n d o r wife, the in tui ti ve f a c u l t y can a c c u r a t e l y c h a r t our j u d g ­ m e n t so t h a t w e are in h a r m o n y w i t h them.
