Sri Kanchi Maha Periva Thiruvadigal Saranam INTRODUCTION Hari Om! Namaskaram from the Kanchi Periva Forum community. We are very happy to continue this special ebook series, a huge treasure this one, on Experiences with Sri Maha Periva. Yes, this is one of the wonderful best-sellers in Tamil titled “Anbe Arule” authored by a great writer – Sri Baraneedharan. More than just being an acclaimed, prolific writer, he is an extremely humble human being and is an ardent devotee of Sri Maha Periva. He has a lot of books and articles to his credit – almost everyone is a jewel but the ones that outshine others are his travel accounts (பயணக்கட்டுரைகள் & அருணாச்சல மகிரம). It is a matter of great pride and satisfaction for us that this title is getting translated and published through this Satsang. Again, the translator (and mostly the illustrator too) of the series is a well-known, highly respected moderator of our Forum – Sri Narayanan Bala (known as anusham163 in our Forum), someone who has dedicated his life to thoughts about Periva and working on something related to Periva all the time – be it drawing, translation of articles, new writing, sketching or a wonderful painting. He is so abundantly blessed by Periva’s Divine Grace and it shows in every step that he takes on any of these fronts. For this particular series, Sri Narayanan Bala has taken lot of pains to conceive the idea, secured permission for translation personally from Sri Baraneedharan and has put in so much of effort to get this treasure to all the Periva devotees at large. Our sincere thanks and namaskarams to both Sri Baraneedharan and Sri Narayanan Bala for this outstanding effort. When we decided to launch this series, we were looking for an appropriate time to commence and it struck us that the “Pratamai thithi” certainly deserves a special place for us as our Periva’s avatar on earth was on a Krishna Paksha Pratamai. Like Sri Krishna Ashtami and Sri Rama Navami, Sri Periva Pratamai should become one of the celebrated thithis in the future, and with such a desire, we decided to launch this as a regular series to be published on Pratamai. We published the First Chapter of this series on Krishna Paksha Pratamai and on the day of Gayatri Japam– 30 Aug, 2015. Chapter 7 of this series is being published on 26th November 2015, Krishna Paksha Pratamai thithi. We humbly submit this e-book edition at the lotus feet of Sri Maha Periva. TRANSLATOR’ S NOTE Om Sri Gurubhyo Namah! Sri Maha Periva Thiruvadigal Charanam
Mr.Baraneedharan's book, 'Anbe Arule..' was the turning point in my life, which moved me towards Maha Periva'. After this only I started reading all the books by Sri Ra.Ganapathy and Deivathin Kural. I also showed my first ten oil paintings of Maha Periva to him who encouraged me and blessed me by saying, "you will do 108 paintings of Periva". I submitted all these ten paintings to SriMatam. Later he asked me to paint portraits of Sri Seshadri swamikal, Sri Ramanar and Sri MahaPeriva (I quote him " these three Mahans were contemporaries; I want to display them in the Sri Seshadhri swamikal maemorial in Chinna Kancheepuram on Sri Seshadhri Swamikal's Jayanthi day.")
I did them and they were hung on the walls there on His Jayanthi day as planned. He blessed me there with the 'Pattu Angavasthram' with which Sri Seshadri Swamikal's photo was decorated during the homam and puja. Memorable day for me. Because of his blessings only, I have completed 69 portraits and I am sure I will be able to complete 108 with his and MahaPeriva's anugraham. I welcome your feedback on this compilation. ANBE ARULE – CHAPTER 7 I had gone BHARATHA, “Will Vasan Then I told
to Kalahasthi in 1966, to attend the conference of ‘AGAMA, SILPA, VYASA AND ANCIENT ARTS’. One day, Swamikal called me and asked very casually, come here if you call him ?” For a moment, I did not know what to answer. Him, “ I will go and tell him that Periava is ‘calling you’”.
“Go to Madras (Chennai) now itself and tell Vasan to come here..”—said Swamikal.
After I returned to Chennai that evening, I met editor Vasan, and told him, what Swamikal had said. I saw sweet surprise in his eyes.
‘’Do you know, why He asked me to come?’’
‘’I do not know. He just said, ‘Ask him to come.’
‘’When should I come?’’
‘’He didn’t say when . Whenever it is convenient for you…’’
‘’No…No… It is not my convenience. The convenience of Periyavah is more important. You do one thing…Tomorrow morning go to Kalahasti, and after knowing Periyava’s convenience, phone me up; I will come.’’ Said editor.

I went to Kalahasti early morning, and asked Periyava, as to when should the editor come. He said ‘’Ask him to come this evening.’’ I informed the editor immediately. He said, ‘’O.K. I will come. You be there.’’
When the editor arrived around 5 0’clock, Periyava was in the Sadhas. I went there and informed Him of the arrival of the editor. Periyava called Kannan and mentioning a place, told him ‘’Ask Vasan to sit there. I will come.’’
It was a small thatched hut. Kannan spread a lot of hay and covered the same with gunny bags and prepared a cushion, outside the hut. Editor went, and sat on it. Swamikal arrived after ten minutes. Editor got up, and prostrated before Him.
Swamikal sat in front of him after asking him to sit. He gestured to me and Kannan to leave from there. We stood ten feet away. He again gestured to us to move still farther; we stood at a distance where we could not hear their talk.
Both of them were talking for more than 45 minutes; Swamikal was speaking most of the time; editor was all attention to Him. Finally, Periava asked me to come nearer. I heard Vasan telling Periava in a polite manner “Whatever Periava told me, I shall do”.
“He (Baraneedharan) knows what I need. Do what he says”---thus speaking, Swamikal gave Prasadham to editor.
Then, we followed Swamikal as He was going somewhere, editor first and we about ten feet behind him.

Swamikal stopped at the Gopura Mantap of Sri Manikandeswarar temple, and pointed out a sloka sculpted on its wall.
“Have you studied Samskrit?”----He asked him with a smile.
“My mother taught me a little when I was young…..”----he replied.
“Ok ! I will read this and explain to you”---Swamikal read out the sloka word by word and explained its meaning in simple language.
(I understood from archeological expert Dr.Nagasamy that it was a stone carving from the 12th century Chola period. The first sloka mentions how Lord Parameswaran accepted, happily, the non-customary offering and the Puja from the hunter Kannappan who had offered his eyes to the Lord. In this second sloka, the poet explains how Eswaran considered the Abhishekam done by the hunter with water brought in his mouth, as a holy bath.)
Swamikal, left the Mantap and gave us leave after blessing us.
I returned to Chennai the next morning only. Editor Vasan, who came to office usually by 2 P.M called me to his room.

“Yesterday, Swamikal told me to ask you what I should do; tell me what you want me to do?”-----he asked me.
I did not know what to answer and so kept silent.
“Why are you keeping silent ?”
“I did not speak to Periava after He told you that. It did not strike me this morning also when I went to Him to get Prasadam. Swamikal also did not tell me anything. I do not know what to tell you”.
He laughed and said, “Swamikal is telling me to ask you; but you say that you do not know anything; I do not know what I should do now…”
I told him that I would again go to Kalahasthi and ask Periava and come back. He said “yes. do that way..”
I went to Periava again and told Him all that happened and said, “Editor is asking me what he needs to do; I also do not know what to ask and how much to ask; How will I know what Periava wants…..”. Swamikal laughed and said, “Ask whatever comes to your mind….” I just kept quiet.
“Nothing comes to your mind..?”

“No…”
Periava thought for some time and said, “Do one thing; go to the manager and ask him how much it costs per month for the stamps used for sending those small books , which are distributed from the MaTam for the ‘Dharma Pracharam’.”
I went and asked the manager who referred to the ledger and told me that about one hundred rupees were spent for that. I came back and informed Swamikal.
“Ok then; ask Vasan to give hundred rupees every month to meet that expenditure….”
When I told the editor about this, he was surprised. “I thought Periava would ask me about one lakh rupees. I had also arranged for that amount; You say that He wants only Hundred rupees per month for the stamp expenditure…… Ok. Please come to Gemini house (his home) tomorrow morning.”
I went there next morning; he called his wife, Smt.Pattamma and asked her to give hundred rupees to me on the first of every month, to be given to SriMatam.
The monthly contribution which started in October 1966, is continuing till date (the time Baraneedharan wrote this ).

He was staying in Sankaralayam in Chitraikula street. It was 7 A.M on the Deepavali day. I immediately proceeded to Gemini House. J.M.D (Balasubramanian) was bursting crackers. When I told him that Swamikal had asked me to take him there, he was surprised and left after informing his mother. Periava was leaning on the corner of a wall in a small room. There was not much of light also. Opposite to Him, Sri Ananthanandha Swamikal, affectionately called ‘Anjaneya Swamikal’, was sitting and reading out a letter to Him. JMD who enetered the dark room from outside sunlight, mistook Ananthananda Swamikal for Periava and prostrated before him. ‘ I am here..”----Swamikal called him laughing !
