Varga Chakra Vyankatesa Sharma Varga Workshop Hyderabad, India- December 2-10,2002 Edited by SANJAY RATH

Sri J agannath Center

Preface

Sri Jagannath Center The Sri Jagannath Center (SJC) was established in 1998 in India with the objective of teaching Vedic Astrology in the tradition of Maharishi Para sara, Jaimini and other sages of yore. Vedic Astrology will be taught by a panel of Jyotish Guru's in the traditional Jyotish parampara of Sri Achyuta DasaJ of Jagannath, Puri. The highest standards of integrity would be infused through the strict discipline of yogic practices in the Vedic religion including training in Vedic remedial measures. Meditation including dhyana (meditation techniques to cleanse the mind), dharana (concentration techniques to increase intelligence and use of intuition), pranayama (yogic breathing methods to increase life force) etc. are taught to ensure spiritual discipline while the classes on the Sri mad Bhagavat Gita and Sanskrit ensures a balanced spiritual growth with the knowledge ofVedic Astrology. SJC continues in the ancient, timehonored "Guru-Sisya" tradition and is dedicated to the propagation of Vedic Learning including Astrology, Spirituality, Vedic Numerology, Vaastu Shastra, and Hinduism etc. SJC has been established in various parts of the world and has many study circles. A list of the Centers and Study Circles as well as web and e-list addresses is at appendix-0!

VyankatesaSharma Varga workshop Sri Jagannath Center, in its effort to spread the sacred knowledge of ancient Jyotish principles in the traditional Guru-Sisya parampara, announced a Workshop on Varga Chakras (Divisional Charts) to be conducted by SJCEast, under the guidance ofPandit Sanjay Rathji. Pt. Sanjay Rath, the founder of Sri Jagannath Center, is a renowned traditional Vedic Astrologer hailing from Bira Balabhadrapur Sasan village of Puri in Orissa, India, and is internationally famous for his research work into the Jaimini system of Vedic Astrology. Known for his precise predictions and scientific approach, he has students around the world and leads probably the most influential of the Jyotish lists on the web. He is the author of several famous books on Jyotish, Crux of Vedic Astrology, Jaimini Maharishi's Upadesa Sutras, Vedic Remedies in Astrology, Narayana Dasa and Vimsottari & Udu dasas and founder editor of The Jyotish Digest, a popular monthly magazine.

VARGACHAKRA

About Vyankatesa Sharma This first ever workshop on Divisional Charts is aptly named after Pt. Vyankatesa Sharma, the illustrious author of the renowned Jyotish classic "Sarvarth Chintamani", who hailed from Andhra Pradesh- the state where the workshop is being conducted. His monumental classic 'Sarvartha Chintamani 'is the most detailed work ever on the use of divisions, divisional charts and a host of other factors and tools used in Vedic astrology. A fme translationz of this work was attempted by the late Sri Jagannath Bhasin, who passed away before completing it and the present version is the effort of Sri S.S.Sareen and others who were somehow able to put together his notes and manuscript. This workshop is intended to kindle a fresh look at the divisional charts and other related aspects of Jyotish. A look at the Faculty and the topics to be discussed promise a power-packed sojourn of intense spirituality and in-depth learning - a humble yet befitting tribute to the master astrologer. ENDNOTES 1 Disciple of Sri ChaitanyaMahaprabhu and one of the panchn salcha (lit. five friends), Sri Achyuta dasa established various Gaddi's (ashram's/vedic schools) for the dissemination of this knowledge. He has authored numerous books on Jyotish and allied subjects and made fantastic predictions which are proving to be accurate. 2 Sarvartha Chintamani, Sagar Publications (1986)

Let us find Siddhamsa Lagna and Moon of tbe Standard Nativity Siddhamsa Lagna

Arc length of one Sidclhamsa = 30/24 * 60 min= 75 min.

Longitude ofLagna = II 0 10' = 670' Hence, Number of Sidclhamsa gained by Lagna =670 175 = 8.93 = 9 siddhamsa (increase this to the next higher integer). Counting 9 signs from Cancer(Lagnais in an Even sign), we arrive at Pisces, which becomes the Siddhamsa Lagna Siddhamsa Moon Longitude of Moon= 19°59' = 1199/75 = 15.98 = 16 =Counting 4 (Expunging multiples of 12from 16) from Leo (Moon is odd sign), we arrive at Scorpio, which is the sign of sidclhamsa Moon. (Please also correct this language as above)

11.3.1

Houses ofEducation

11.3.1.1 4th house: This house is also known as the vidya sthana or the house of learning. In normal parlance this house is the house of formal education. The karaka for this house is Mercury, who is a keen learner and represent the mental faulty needed for such learning. Moon is another karaka for this house and represents the mind. However, we can see that Moon is also the lord ofthe4•h house ofNatural Zodiac and represent Mana.

180

VARGA CHAKRA

Moon is a luminary like Sun and reflects its light in the world of Maya. Being a luminary it also gives knowledge. However, Moon represent the world (Samsara) of Maya and only reflects the light of Sun, not having its own light, hence it gives the knowledge which is only useful in the realm of Maya and not Satya. This knowledge is also called the Apara Vidya. 11.3.1.2 5th house: This is the house of knowledge or wisdom. The karakas for this house is Jupiter, who represents Para-Vidya, the knowledge that is based on truth and is useful in not only in this life, but also in the whole cycle of birth and death. This is the real knowledge, which enables the soul to break the shackles of bondage, which brings us again and again to this world of Maya.

In the natural Zodiac, 5* house is lorded by the Sun, the storehouse of Energy and which causes true illumination, by showing us the Satya Marga, or the path to Truth. The Sun represents the flre, which can burn down all sins, which is caused by ignorance and darkness. Being the naisargika Atmakaraka, he represents the divine principle, and makes us understand, that the true knowledge is hidden within us, in the Atma, which is shadowed by the sheaths of ignorance. In the realm of Maya, we fall into the clutches of the mind (Moon) and forget our true nature of all knowledgeable and powerful, eternal soul, which keeps on traveling in search of true light of Sun, until we achieve it. Hence now we can understand that the true light or knowledge can only be given by Sun whereas only the reflection of it, which is only useful in the realm of Maya, is given by Moon. Hence the True illumination can only come from the Sun. 11.3.1.3 9'h House: This is the house of Dharma and the Significator are Jupiter and Sun. The lord of ninth house of Natural Zodiac is Jupiter, who also represents the Pavitra Agni or the Sacred flre, which is able to bum down all sins and ignorance. Here, we can understand and appreciate the fact that, upholding dharma is a fiery principle and can only be done by the Fiery Sun and the Fiery nature ofJupiter. This is also the house of Higher learning and Gum. We can see the relationship between the higher learning, upholding dharma and the Guru. They can be inter-related with each other to show that with higher learning, one becomes the gum, to guide the Shisyas (5* house) to uphold the dharma. This can also be interpreted as Gnm dispels the ignorance of his shisyas with true knowledge, represented by the 5* and the 9111 house and governed by Jupiter and Sun.

The Karakas

Intelligence is governed by devagum Jupiter, who is the karaka for Dhi or the supreme intelligence. There are many kind of intelligence, which is important for sustenance in this material world and with the same reasoning; animals are also intelligent, as they also know, how to keep themselves alive. However, the only difference, between an animal and human being is the presence of "Dhi", or the intelligence for self-development and realization. Who else can govern, such intelligence than the devagum himself! The strength of Jupiter lies with guiding the Mana (Moon) in the right direction. This is why in the Kalachakra, or the time cycle, Jupiter is placed opposite to the Moon. No, wonder, on Amavasyas and Purnimas, when the mind gets hyper exited; only Jupiter has the power to put rein on such Mind. Thus on full Moon nights, when the Moon (Mind) is highly activated, Satya-Narayan (Jupiter) vrata is done. This is pertinent to mention here is that the knowledge is always within us, as we have the same spark of Atma, which is similar to paramatma, the storehouse of all knowledge. The only difference between a normal mortal and a yogic is that one doesn't know how to access the source and the other knows how to do it. This is why Maharshis could know many things by meditating, through their intuition. The omnipresence and omnipotent characteristics of knowledge (True knowledge- the Vedas) can only be described by the ethereal Jupiter. Jupiter has the extra ordinary power to tap all form ofknowledge, comprehensible or incomprehensible. Among he supporters of Jupiter, Moon is the most important as he is who exalts the Jupiter. Thus, Moon aids in the manifestation of Jupiter or Dhi, and represent the Mana or consciousness. A strong Mana can only be productive, when it is under the proper guidance of supreme intellect signified by Devagum Brhaspati. Sun is the storehouse of all energy as it is the natural significator of the Atma. As discussed above, Atma contains all knowledge, it require only a good Mana and Dhi to access it. This is the source of light, which the Moon (Mana) reflects. Thus an unaffiliated and strong Sun is prerequisite for a native to be a expert in multiple disciplines. As Sunlight contains all colours of light, the ray of light, which a native accesses from Sun, is dependent on the influences on the Sun. This is why the Sun represents the knowledge of Gita, which is a philosophy, which encompasses all fonn of knowledge and hence has all the colours.

182

VARGA CHAKRA

Mars signify the ability to break down a complex problem into smaller part and analyze each of them to have a comprehensive understanding of the whole problem and get the solution. As opposed to Jupiter, it doesn't use intuition, but logical reasoning for solving problem. Mercury is the planet of skills and signifies the ability to use Language in communication. Strong Mercury shows good communication skills. On one hand, where Jupiter signifies knowledge and wisdom, Mercury signify formal education, i.e., application of intelligence in solving practical problems. This also signifies the learning ability as Mercury represents a child who can be trained in various things. All depends on who is training the child; the child will learn the things indicated by the teacher. If Jupiter is teaching him, no doubt the native becomes knowledgeable and ifMoon is the teacher, he becomes passionate, concurring with the trait of Moon. Who is teaching Mere, is learnt from which planet is placed in the trine to it. Venus is a great tapasvi, and he rules the desire, which goads us to learn. Thus whenever Venus is associated with Saturn (hard work and patience) and Ketu (Mokshakaraka), the native becomes a Tapasvi (someone who undertakes severe austerity and penances to attain siddhi). As opposed to Jupiter, who rules para vidya (knowledge which is used irrespective of whether we are born or not), Venus rules apara vidya (knowledge which is used in this mortal world). Thus Venus signify practical strategies, which help in solving real life problems. Saturn debilitates Jupiter and hence signifies loss of Memory among other significations. Saturn detaches one's consciousness or the Mana from accessing the source of knowledge as opposed to Jupiter, which connects the Mana to it. For that matter Saturn is a bitter enemy of the naisargika Atmakaraka, Sun and hence any studies done during Sani Kala is prone to forgetfulness. One should check out, saturn's influence on the Lagna or the Paka Lagna to understand, how Saturn is playing mischief in making the person forgetting things. If Jupiter is placed with a strong Saturn, then also the person might suffer failure of memory, as with mere association, Saturn can cause debilitation of Jupiter. Rahu eclipses Sun and is a bitter enemy of Jupiter. Rahu has a natural tendency to eclipse Sun and hide the effulgence of Sun is extreme darkness. This is no wonder that in Rahu-Kala, not only gathering knowledge is next to impossible; but also one is tend to make wrong decisions (shown by the enmity towards "dhi" karaka Jupiter).

11.3.3 Milestones in Education Career We know that fourth is the house of formal learning or schooling, where the child learns ways of the world, the 9th is the house of advanced studies, where the child attains the knowledge of the teacher and capable of guiding others. It is well known that the ninth is the house of higher education and shows graduation in any discipline. Note that the ninth house is six signs away from the 4'h house indicating a marked change or growth (6* is an Upachaya or house of growth). Thus, by completing formal school education and going to college the native has grown. Extending the same principle, we can say that 6th house from 9'\ i.e., the 2rw1 house shall represent further education or the masters degree and then the 7* house (sixth from second house)will represent even further education such as doctorate or so.

Hence we can say here that, each milestone in someone'seducation career will be represented by the house progressing 6 houses from the 4th house for each such milestone.

11.4 Overall Strength of Siddhamsa Chart In order to judge the strength of Siddhamsa chart, we need to judge the following things:

11.4.1 The Karya Bhava: The focal point of any divisional chart is the karya bhava. This bhava has the overall supervision on the affairs governed by the respective divisional chart. Disposition of this bhava shall show whether the affairs signified by the divisional chart shall flourish and to what extent. For siddhamsa, the Karya bhava is the 4'h house. If the house as well as the lord is well-placed, then this promises a good education career. 11.4.2 Karyesha: The planet who is the doer for a divisional chart is called the karyesha. This planet is the lord of the karya bhava in the rasi chart. This planet's placement in the concerned divisional chart shall show how fast the native get success in the endeavours signified by the divisional chart. 11.4.3 The Siddhamsa Lagna For any divisional chart, the Amsa Lagna is very vital as this is the pivot on which the whole chart rotates. The disposition of the Siddhamsa Lagna and the siddhamsa Lagna lord shall show, how smooth the education career of the native. If the Siddhamsa Lagna is placed in a Dusthana, the native is likely to have troubles in the education career.

115 The Sun and Moon in Siddhamsa 11.5 .l

The Moon

Moon, is the karaka of Mind. Whether a person will have fixity of mind in studies is seen from the Moon in Siddhamsa. lf the Moon is placed in a Fixed (Sthira) Siddhamsa, the native has stability of mind and has concentrated, focused mind while studying. These persons rarely jump over topic and have patience to stick to whatever they are doing. This kind of focus is highly desirable in studies as this gives a lot of concentration and good assimilation of studies. However, if Moon is placed in a Movable sign, the native will have difficulties in pursuing his studies with full concentration. They will be marked with wavering mind and lack of concentration in studies. Hence they will jump over topics, without completing anyone of them fully. The Dispositor of Moon (Mind) if well placed and associate with the Lagna through aspect of conjunction gives good analytical skills and prepares the stage for a good scholar. This also indicates inclination of mind towards learning.

11.5.2

The Ayanas

There are four major directions of life, Dharma or righteousness, Artha or accumulating materials of pleasure, Kama or enjoyment of the materials of pleasure and Moksha, breaking away from the materials of pleasure and renouncing the world. These four directions are signified the four Kendras reckoned from the Lagna. The Kendra starting from Lagna (1", 5'\ 9th) is called the dharma Trikona, that starting from the 2nd or the Dhana bhava (2nd, 6*, 10"') is called the Artha Trikona, one starting from the 3rd or the Parakrarna bhava (3 .., 7th, II ll

In the Saptamsa the Lagna Lord, Moon is in the seventh house. Moon is joined the I Q•h lord Mars, and this shows that the native may terminate a pregnancy. As Moon is the karaka for mother, and joined Mars and Venus, this causes a situation where after this mother terminates the first child, her ability to carry the children gets weakened or lost, and can result in miscarriages, due to Jala Dosha (Moon associated with 10* house/lord). As Saptamsa Lagna is an even sign, the reckoning of children starts

from the ninth house.

Ninth house is Sag, and its lord Jupiter is strong in the sign Gemini, however is under the papakartari yoga of Saturn and Rahu. Satun. being the dispositor oftheLagna lord shows that this child was aborted by the native ... the scene was now set. The second child is seen from the seventh house, where the combination of the lO'h lord and Lagna is placed, hence also this child was lost. The 3m child is seen from the 5"' house, who's lord is Mars, hence also this child suffered. As Jupiter is strong by its placement in Gemini, the gati ignores Rahu, and the fourth child is seen from the third house, which is under the papakartari yoga. The fifth child is seen from Lagna, whose lord is joined the JO'h lord again. The 6'h child is seen from II"' house, who's lord- Venus is joined the I O'h lord and lagna as well. This poor lady suffered six miscarriages, during the Dasa's of Mars and Rahu, and sought remedial measures from a learned Jyotish. As the next house in Mandooka gati is the ninth again, instead of jumping we crawl to the next house - I O'h. Now, the I O"' lord may have hurt its lordship of Scorpio, by being the lOttt lord, but it will not hurt its own lordship of the l 0''' house. Hence, a possibility of a daughter due to Mars' conjunction with 2 female planets, here is strong, but only after a long gap (Ketu in Aries) and if the Jala (watery/fertile) Tatwa (element) is strong. The remedy for Jala Dosha has been given previously. However not everyone is fit to receive the Gayatri, hence the Santana Gopala mantra can be given. The native met this author with much distress about his lack of children, and his wife's last two miscarriages. In the Rasi, Jupiter is retrograde in the

fifth house, clearly pointing at the lack of children, and some unusual means were needed to be taken to achieve the couple's desire.

Upapada is in Aquarius, and the second there from should be checked to see wife's problems. If Saturn, Venus and Mercury aspect this place, then it can be easily inferred that the spouse is barren. This can be confirmed by checking the Saptamsa in the Wife's chart. This was however not the case in this chart. Instead, the second from Upapada, being Sag, receives the Rasi drishti of a Moon, joined enemy Venus and afflicted by Rahu and Ketu by Rasi drishti. This shows the inability of the wife to carry children, and this was the focal point of the native's query. The native was immediately advised to fast on Saturdays, whilst his spouse were to worship the Moon with the mantra "Om Matre Namah". Furthermore, as fifth lord from Jupiter (bringer of children) - Sun, was joined with Mercury, a mantra for Sri Rama to bring children was advised. More can be grasped from Saptamsa. The native mentioned that the wife had suffered two miscarriages prior to the query. Moon is in the sixth house here, and clearly there is some Dosha related to the Moon. Fifth lord in the sixth was sure to give at least one miscarriage. As Lagna is an even sign, counting would start from the ninth house, however as per Jaimini's advice, if Saturn is in Lagna, the counting is always forward and regular. Fifth house is Cancer, and Moon is in Leo. This

would have given a Son, but sixth house is very malefic for children in male charts, and this resulted in a miscarriage. Seventh house shows second child, and is occupied by Mars (bleeding) and aspected by Rahu and Ketu, as well as Saturn. This showed a very detrimental situation and only the lord of the seventh can save. Lord Mercury is in the second house, and aspected by a beneficial moon, but as there's a Parivartana between Mars and Mercury, Mars was going to decide the results! This child didn't survive either, and there was a lot of misery. Ninth house shows third child, and the couple tried to get a surrogate mother to help. Note that this was the retrograde Jupiter working! Lord of ninth is Mars, who's is in Virgo an even sign, indicating a female child. Many malefics are again aspecting it, but keep in mind the Parivartana! During Jupiter Dasa, Moon Antar and Rahu Pratyantar, the couple was blessed with a Son, and contacted this scribe for the happy news. It may be inferred that for timing childbirth, the Maha Dasa should have a strong connectionlargala on the lagna. In this case, Jupiter lords the Lagna. The Antar Dasa, should be in the 12'h, or trines to the graha indicating the child. In this case, Mercury indicates the child, and Moon is in trines from it. The Pratyantar Dasa should be in the trines to the Saptamsa Lagna or otherwise associated with the Lagna. In this case, the strong exalted Rahu in Gemini has Rasi Drishti on Lagna.

Foreign Education from Siddhamsa By Narayan Iyer 15.1 Introduction

"It is education that will determine the leaders of the twenty-first century. Available and affordable educational opportunities are a universal priority" so says the home page of one of the International Education sites.

Peace and prosperity in the 21st Century depend on increasing the capacity of people to think and work on a global and intercultural basis. As technology opens borders, educational and professional exchange opens minds. Broadening the outlook of future leaders through academic and professional exchange strengthens their ability to think and act on a cooperative basis. Academic and professional exchange is also a critical means for transferring knowledge and skills across borders and preparing a new generation of global citizens. In the century ahead, these activities will bemore important than ever, since many of the world's problems can be solved only on a regional and transnational basis. Moreover, the coming of Information Age has impressed upon people the value and power of Knowledge and the need to acquire it wherever possible. With technology bridging the world and making it a smaller place, it comes as no surprise when residents of one nation fly across the continent to educate themselves in a totally alien culture and nation. Hence, the theme of this article will be Education in a Foreign Land/ Country. All the relevant stanzas from the classical literature are quoted at the appropriate places. Kaarakas (Significators) for Learning, the Divisional considerations, and all other pertinent details will be traced to these classics. Finally, with some Case-Studies, we shall use the Vimsottari Dasa, explaining how the Dasa, An tara Dasa and Pratyantara Dasa clearly explains the events without beating around the bush too much.

VARGACHAKRA

15.2 Divisional Consideration In the chapter Divisional Consideration (Atha VargavivekaadhyaayaH), Maharishi Parasara states:

~~II

vidyiiyil vedaballvmizse I I Translation: Learning/Education should be discerned through the 1124/Jo ( Chaturvimsamsa) division ofRasi.

Thus, it is clear from this sloka that Learning and allied activities should be discerned from Vedabahvamsa, also eomrnonly known as Chaturvimsamsa or Siddhamsa or simply D-24. This learning also includes all kinds of Formal Education, which is what we are specifically interested in. This brings us to another important question: Why the 24th division? Answer: The 12 sign division is the primary division, hence it follows that all sub-division of the sign will fall in a sequence that repeats after every 12 divisions. Thus, the first 12 divisional charts (Dl-Dl2) belong to the first harmonic; the 2"d group of 12 divisional charts (Dl2-D24) belongs to the second harmonic, so on and so forth. Each harmonic is related to the plane of consciousness and determines the manner and extent to which the individual is aware or influenced by the environment that is being examined. The first harmonic rules the physical plane, the second rules mental, the third rules sub-conscious mental plane, the 4 111 rules over the spirit world and the fifth goes beyond the spirit world and into the past births. Example: D24 chart belongs to the second harmonic of the D 12 chart because D24 = (12 X l) + 12. Thus, D24 has a eonneetion with 12* house & D 12 and belongs to the second harmonic which belongs to the mental plane. This definitely makes sense, as learning is dependend a lot on mental inclination & capacity; knowledge is passed on from our elders (12'h house & D 12)! Thus, the entire education system is nothing but a means of passing knowledge from the elder generation to the next generation, a continuum. Hence the 12th house i.e. Elders teach the youngsters.
