Mobilizing Gerontological Nursing Education The GNEC Podcast Project Melissa Aselage, MSN, RN, FNP-BC

Abstract Capturing

nursing

student interest in gerontological nursing content can be challenging. Using technology, a joint project based on the Geriatric Nursing Education Consortium (GNEC) modules produced podcasts focused on nine major topics of care for older adults: atypical presentation, cancer, critical thinking, dementia, diabetes, geriatric resources, heart disease, intensive care, and interdisciplinary teams. © 2010/Photos.com

Each podcast lays a foundation of content for faculty to build on in the classroom and at the bedside.

P

reparing students to meet the demands of the workforce caring for older adults is a national need (Institute of Medicine, 2008). Learning is no longer limited to the four walls of a classroom. The Internet has markedly expanded access to information, and students need information technology skills to continue to access information as lifelong learners (Skiba, Conners, & Jeffries, 2008). As a faculty member, I began to podcast my own gerontological

nursing lectures to undergraduate nursing students in an effort to test their use of technology. Students reported listening while they walked their dog on the beach, exercised, cooked dinner, and rode in their cars. The podcasts seemed to be a way to incorporate learning into their lives and generate an interest in gerontological nursing content. I had the opportunity to share a podcast proposal during a site visit for the St. Louis Geriatric Nursing Education Consortium (GNEC). This was the beginning of a joint project among the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) GNEC, the New York University Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). As the project began, baccalaureate nursing students completing a stand-alone gerontology course at the UNCW School of Nursing were asked to volunteer to help create two podcasts using the GNEC case study interwoven with didactic content in an “evolving case study” format (Aselage, Brock, et al., 2009; Aselage, Cox, et al., 2009). A third podcast was created in a “talk show” format with interviews of two gerontological nursing experts for the Geriatric Resources module (Aselage, Mezey, & Gray-Miceli, 2009). In the summer of 2009, the faculty presenters at the GNEC meeting in Philadelphia recorded content based on the original GNEC white papers (Balas, Casey, & Happ, 2008; Chyun, Coviello, & Stephen, 2008; Evans, 2008; McDonald & Gray-Miceli, 2008; Overcash, 2008; Wexler & Siegler, 2008). These podcasts, each less than 30 minutes in length, introduce the topics: cancer, dementia, diabetes, heart disease, intensive care unit care, and use of interdisciplinary teams (Aselage & Beckie, 2009;

Aselage & Happ, 2009; Aselage & Jefferson, 2009; Aselage & Overcash, 2009; Aselage & Puentes, 2009; Aselage, Wexler, & D’Amico, 2009). Nursing instructors can build on the podcast lecture content and use the accompanying case studies in the classroom with students. A total of nine GNEC podcasts are currently available at http://consultgerirn. org/resources/gnec_podcasts/. References
