Acknowledgements “Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and all our substance.” -Ezra 8:21

I would like to thank my God and Savior Jesus Christ for his grace and mercy in my life and his bountiful blessings, which he has provided. Every detail that I understand about juice fasting is provided by his grace and I also believe that the very ability to accomplish an effective fast for whatever purpose it might be is by his grace. I would like to thank my wife and mother for all their hard work and labor of love. I am blessed to have you both in my life. To my brothers that went before me in the faith, William M. Branham, Bishop G.E Patterson, Martin Luther, John Wesley, Don Basham and the many others whose lives of prayer and discipline have been such a source of inspiration and have given me the foundational work to build on. I am ever so grateful. If my life ends having accomplished a small fraction of what you have done for the Lord Jesus, I will have been successful. To you the reader: What would a book be without someone to read it? I thank you for your time and attention and trust that this information will be of use and a blessing to you as it has been to me. Knowing that you are out there somewhere and have enough interest to pick up a copy of this journal and read it, is a big factor in the motivation to write it. May God richly bless you is my prayer.

Disclaimer and Statement of Intent It is my hope that the benefits that I have received from all the years of juice fasting can also in some way be of service to you the reader. This journal is not a how to “juice fast” guide, but rather a “how I fasted in July of 2011” record. It is a record of my 2011 juice fasting experience. In my early years of learning how to juice fast, the journals of others who had successfully completed a juice fast were a tremendous source of encouragement, inspiration, as well as useful information. It is my intention to pass a flicker of the torch of inspiration to someone else who perhaps is somewhere along the same road. This journal is a record of one 30 day fast, undertaken by someone with a fair amount of experience, as well as the trial and error that comes along with gaining such experience. Neither this journal nor myself are the authority on juice fasting. There are many people that juice fast. Many have done much longer fasts than myself and have much more experience than myself. Some propose rules and guidelines for the most proper and effective way to juice fast. There are many different ways to fast. Fasting is a discipline of self-denial. One’s approach to fasting generally has much to do with their mentality, objectives, and beliefs and of course knowledge about the subject. For that reason, I have not taken a position on “how to fast” but rather “how I fasted and accomplished these results at this point in time.” Juice fasting can be dangerous if done incorrectly. I am certain that my juice fasting technique can be improved and no doubt there is a more efficient way to do what I do and information that perhaps I lack. Regardless of that fact, I do what I do because it works for me and always has. It may not be the best method, but it is my current method. There are coaches, clinics and retreats available to those who can afford the expense and investment of professional guidance and training. Juice fasting most certainly is a “skill” and the failure rate is high for those who attempt it in an unskilled way. Most intelligent people do not prepare for a long, physically challenging race without some kind of coaching, especially if they have never completed such a race. The same intelligence should be applied to fasting, especially longer fasts. Those with health concerns and diverse kinds of physical ailments need to approach juice fasting with due regard for their health condition. It is my advice to anyone attempting any kind of fast to consult a competent physician or professional who is knowledgeable on the subject prior to starting, and throughout the process. This journal is for information purposes only and not to be taken in the place of competent medical care or the advice of your physician. 4

The Significance of Maintaining a Healthy pH Balance Potential of hydrogen (pH) levels determines the degree of acid and alkaline (base) in the body’s tissues and fluids. The pH scale measures from 0 – 14 with 7 being the neutral point with equal concentrations of both. Although pH balance in the body consists of equal concentrations of both acid and alkaline, it’s in an alkaline environment that the body endures best. The human body constantly strives to maintain a healthy pH level because when the balance is disrupted, an assortment of health problems will occur. A balanced pH level is thought to be within the range of 7.2 – 7.4 on the pH scale. However, the ideal pH level will vary from one individual to another, so a healthy pH level is considered to be between 6.8 and 7.5. Any substance with a pH lower than 7.0 is considered to be acidic, and above 7.0 is considered to be alkaline. Symptoms of pH imbalance are weight gain or loss, acne, allergies, and on a more serious level, problems associated with aging include arthritis, heart troubles and other diseases. To obtain a healthy pH level, a proper diet should consist of 80% alkalizing foods and 20% acid-forming foods. Eating more green foods (vegetables) will produce a healthy alkalizing pH diet. Acidosis is the state of being overly acidic and alkalosis is the state of having too much alkaline in the system. Acid forming foods are used to build and alkalizing foods are used to cleanse. Too much of either is unhealthy. Many expert health officials consider the imbalance of acid and alkaline in the human body to be a basic cause of disease, particularly because an overly acidic environment weakens the body systems, curtailing their ability to function properly. Most people who suffer from unbalanced pH levels are acidic. When elimination through the urine and perspiration isn’t enough to neutralize or rid the body of the excess acid, the body is forced to take minerals from the bones and organs. If this process continues and goes undetected for a long period of time, severe impairment to bodily functions can occur. The human body can properly absorb and digest minerals and nutrients only when the pH levels are balanced. When there’s an imbalance, ingesting healthy nutrients will mean little because the body isn’t able to use and distribute them correctly. Water: The Life Force of the Human Body It’s imperative that the human body receive adequate amounts of clean water on a daily basis. It’s hard to believe that this colorless, odorless and tasteless substance 5

can be such a crucial component in sustaining life, and yet even the average person with little knowledge about the human body recognizes this fundamental fact. Water is the one essential element that all life must have to exist. Without it, the human body would wither away in much the same ways as plants and flowers do. Dehydration (lack of water) is second only to oxygen deprivation (lack of oxygen) when it comes to describing the swiftest way to extract the body of its life force. The human body consists of 75% water, which happens to be a solution that also contains salt similar to the salt in seawater. This water solution dissolves, processes, and distributes the nutrients throughout the body. Maintaining pH balance is vital to cellular health, which are the building blocks of the body. Besides maintaining healthy pH levels, other benefits of water are helping to regulate body temperature, carrying oxygen to all the cells of the body, and it maintaining muscle tone. In addition to maintaining the body’s pH balance, water is also critical for the elimination of wastes and toxins. Without water, not only will the cells, blood and organs be unable to perform their normal functions, but also waste products must then be stored in the interstitial spaces surrounding the cells and organs. If wastes aren’t eliminated, it will accumulate and prevent the cells from receiving the proper nutrition it needs to survive. If this accumulation continues for a prolonged period of time, it forces the cells to eventually change to compensate for the loss in order to survive. Since living with waste products and toxins in the system isn’t normal, then the cells that adapt to this unhealthy environment won’t be normal either. Hence, the body will then be dealing in an abnormal setting, which will eventually lead to the onset and progression of disease. The body attempts to release all acidic waste through urine and perspiration but sometimes, because of the amount of acid buildup, this release isn’t sufficient. Drinking water will help the body to properly eliminate acid buildup and waste products. Water is healthiest when it rests at a neutral pH level of 7.0 and higher, containing more levels of alkaline than acid. Thus, drinking sufficient amounts of water will not only keep the body hydrated but it will also ward off diseases. Another less known benefit of achieving pH balance is that the body will automatically drop to its ideal weight. It has been stated that the human body is alkaline by design but because of behavior, it has been transformed into an acidic foundation. Because of this acidic nature, the pH balance has been disrupted making the body almost predisposed to attracting molds, fungus, viruses and a host of other bacteria. Contrary to what may 6

Copyright 2011 Michael Morales

be commonly believed, the body’s immune system isn’t the first line of defense against harmful bacteria. Maintaining pH balance is the first wall of protection. Should bacteria successfully enter the body because of pH imbalance, then the immune system kicks in to try and correct the problem. Conclusion Because the normal function of cells results in the release of acid, then it’s best if people wouldn’t contribute further to this acidity by eating the wrong foods and not drinking enough water. Since an acidic environment produces a breeding ground for germs and bacteria, it’s urgent that people begin to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables in their diets (contributing to an alkaline environment) in addition to drinking a sufficient amount of water.

Water: The Great Essential to Your Health Just about everybody realizes that in order to achieve optimal health, drinking enough fluids is a necessity. The problem today is, with other beverages being as popular as they are and the busy lifestyle that many people have, most people find drinking enough water every day as a very difficult task. There is a ton of information that states that the majority of people in the United States suffer from chronic dehydration because of not drinking enough of the very liquid that make up every cell in their body. The Health Benefits of Water Every part of the human body requires water to properly function; whether it be metabolism, brain function, or simply proper digestion. Naturally, those who drink enough water will be less prone to issues that are the result of a reduced level of bodily function. Among these functions are the immune system, digestive system, and metabolism. Maintaining a healthy metabolism is important to managing one's weight. Studies have shown that those who drink the proper amount of water boost the number of calories that they burn throughout the day. Water also suppresses appetite, which would discourage people from overeating by having a glass of water just before a meal. Thought and memory process are a result of electrical processes through the brain and nervous system. Brain cells are naturally surrounded by tissues that conduct these currents and carry them to where they need to be throughout the body. These signals, along with hormones created by brain cells, are often fueled with water. Those who drink enough water may be less prone to reduced concentration, and may find themselves thinking more clearly than those who do not. As hormonal imbalances are the prime cause of chronic depression, some studies are showing that it is possible depression is a result of a small fluid intake as well. Many infections are thought to be made worse when less water is consumed. Urinary tract infections are much more common when the urine is more acidic. Water reduces the pH of the urine, which reduces the ability of the bacteria to thrive in the urinary tract. Other infections also thrive where the bodily pH is too high. Those who are prone to infections may find that the cause is not drinking enough water. 8

Many digestive problems are curable with drinking greater amounts of water. Constipation and irregularity are common problems, and the most common cause is reduced water intake. Water allows the digestive system to create a more regular system through, more or less, lubricating the digestive tract. Constipation also causes an imbalance of the proper amount of bacteria throughout the intestines, which is the common cause of irregularity. Drinking the proper amount of water is a simple solution to both of these problems. How Much Water Should an Average Person Drink? The amount of water a person should drink is a relatively common question. Despite the old adage that everybody should drink roughly eight glasses of water a day, there are a number of factors that could require one to drink more or less water, such as weight, activity level, or any health problems. An active person, for example, who is working out for greater than sixty minutes or any time in weather that is hot and/or humid, should drink an additional four to eight ounces of water every fifteen to twenty minutes of their workout. After the workout, regardless of the amount of exercise or humidity, it is recommended to drink between sixteen and twenty-four ounces of water per pound lost during the workout, as anything lost during the workout itself is water weight lost through sweating. The average person who works out around thirty minutes a day should drink roughly half their body weight in ounces of water. This seems like quite a bit, but for the average person it is relatively close to the guideline of the eight glasses of water a day. Keep in mind this is a general guideline. Heat and humidity, along with many other factors, can cause a person to sweat or otherwise require more water. There are a number of health problems that can exist as well that may require drinking more water. Drinking more water than what the recommended guidelines state won't do any harm.

Colonic Irrigation and Hydrotherapy When people hear the word “colonic,” they often have an adverse reaction. When we talk about colonic irrigation, sometimes there is a concern that rises and sometimes, even fear. Of course, there is no reason for fear or concern. Although the process is safe and has been done millions of times and for many years, the main reason for concern may be people's inhibitions and shyness about this part of the anatomy. I’ve been there and can understand, however, once more familiarity is acquired, all concerns are alleviated. Then both long and short-term benefits in health and vitality have an opportunity to occur. Without the initial orientation though, some are too shy to give it a try. Let's look at just what is meant by colonic irrigation and hydrotherapy. The process goes back to at least the early Egyptians. It is mentioned in a document called the 'Eber Papyrus' from 1500 B.C. The technique was then picked up by the ancient Greeks who also leave a record of having benefitted. Through the 1920's and the ensuing 30 or 40 years, the procedure became quite popular. However, like other beneficial practices, it was phased out when more 'modern' treatments were adopted in the 1960's. It should be noted that when female midwives were the ones delivering babies, the birth of a child was usually safe and successful. When the 'modern' practice of male doctors - considered experts - was introduced, accidents and incidents of a negative nature increased dramatically. The point is simple. What might be considered “modern” by some, is not always the best. Those considered to be “experts” are not always, in fact, experts. Colonic irrigation can also be called colon therapy or colon hydrotherapy. Sometimes the term is just shortened to hydrotherapy. Different individuals and practitioners have their own techniques and use terms that fit their specific style. The process involves inserting a tube into the rectum and mildly injecting a liquid into the colon. This tube is normally inserted only about 4cm and is not painful at all. If there is some pain, the patient should notify the person performing the procedure to make sure there are no conditions that may need some attention before proceeding. This liquid can be clean, plain water or different mixtures of herbs or other fluids. For some types of irrigation, a total of 60 liters of water is used over approximately a 30 minute period. The water or liquid is allowed to fill the colon until the colon is full. There is a little feeling of fullness, but less than one feels during a regular bowel movement. When the body senses that the colon is full, a natural desire to evacuate the colon occurs and the liquid is released.

10

Copyright 2011 Michael Morales

At no time during the process is there too much pressure or any great pain. This filling and then releasing process is designed to create a cleansing effect on the colon. As the colon empties itself, this contraction causes a natural expulsion of residue and toxins which may be left on the walls of the colon if not otherwise treated. The patient will feel a sense of cleansing and relaxation sometimes during or after the process is complete. Those that have experienced colonic irrigation are aware of the build-up that can be removed from the colon as well as the beneficial effects of colonic hydrotherapy when done correctly by a skilled practitioner. When should colonic irrigation be done? Colonic irrigation can be done at any time an individual feels the need. It can also be done during times when constipation is experienced. Colonic hydrotherapy is especially recommended by those that promote and facilitate detoxification. When the body is undergoing a detoxification, many types of toxins may come out of the system. It is best to flush these toxins away and not let them sit in the body to irritate or even become reabsorbed. Those undergoing a detox program should always consult with those administering the program to find out what kind of colonic therapy is recommended and how often. They will know what is required by the design of their program. You will also need to be aware of what your body is experiencing so that you can help with the efficiency of the detox. Oftentimes, the people helping you with your detoxification program will also be able to administer colonic irrigation or recommend to you someone that can. Don't be shy about asking all the questions you need to ask until you are comfortable and familiar with the process. You'll feel better once you have a chance to experience detoxification and colonic therapy when administered correctly by professionals. Everyone is born with a slightly unique colon. When we look at models of the body as plastic molds or paper posters, the colon itself is made to appear simpler than it actually is. Most people have twists and turns and even loops in their colon. Some have one as short as 3 feet and some are as long as 11 feet. The colon - also called the large intestine - is actually composed of several sections: the appendix, the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the descending colon, the sigmoid colon and finally the rectum. This is not a simple part of the body. If you are on a detoxification program or considering colonic irrigation, this may be an excellent choice for you. A quick search on the Internet will bring to light many success stories related to this technique for cleaning the body of toxins and restoring health. You won't find practitioners making great claims of cures and miracles, but you will find individuals that swear by the effects - sometimes dramatic and life changing - that they experienced personally. 11

This leads us to a key point. Your body and your health are subjective and only you can decide what you feel is right for you at any time. The decision can take some time, or you may be comfortable after a few simple questions get answered. A word of caution when seeking out a colon hydrotherapist: Find a therapist that has been in practice for a while. There is a big difference between an experienced colon hydrotherapist and a novice. Do NOT use a novice if you are new. If you have never had a colonic before it would be wise to have a therapist that has been certified for a while (several years at least), is licensed to conduct business and presents a comfortable and professional environment for you.

Prior to the Race: My Preparation for 2011’s 30 Day Juice Fast June 20th 2011 I am really excited to start this juice fast. As a friend put it yesterday, “It’s like going on a vacation.” That is so very true. As we like to define a vacation as a positive experience that we certainly want to do again and again, a properly executed fast is among the most wonderful experiences that I have had in 40 years of life. It can also be like competing in a triathlon or marathon. I do have a little experience with triathlons, and the principles of planning, preparation and the proper execution of a long race is much like that of what many would consider a long fast. The keywords here are “properly executed.” With that in mind I have spent half of June 2011 preparing for this juice fast. Preparing means that I need to get my body used to not getting its fuel by “eating” food. Since during a fast we will be “drinking” our fuel, many days in the latter half of June were “smoothie” days with a meal in the evening. I spent much more time than usual with the blender out, blending up different varieties of smoothies throughout the day. I also would periodically juice up some fresh veggies and use super foods to further improve my pH balance. The objective in preparation BEFORE transition is to: #1 Prepare the body to get its fuel from only fluids #2 Improve my pH to have the ability to appropriately buffer acids produced during detoxification and minimize cleansing reactions. The week before the fast is what many fasters call the Transition period. Exactly how long Transition should be depends entirely on the person doing the fast. During Transition, I will further increase my consumption of freshly juiced produce (preferably organically grown). I will also be ingesting smoothie type drinks, soymilk, and thick soups to gradually get my body into the “gear” of not actually eating food. During this time there are also no more evening meals. No meats, breads, pastas, or anything that can’t be juiced or blended in a blender. We are creatures of habit. Although breaking habits most of the time is not easy, for me, going from eating food to acquiring my necessary nutrition from only juice

13

is like changing gears. My experience is that the more you do it; the body remembers and recognizes what you are doing and responds accordingly. It is almost like exercising. Once you have been in shape, your body is somewhat familiar with being in shape and as you discipline yourself to re-align it with fitness, it “gradually” conforms to your will. This is not to say that it is “easy.” Fasting is a discipline that requires some effort, especially in the initial days. How much effort will depend on how well I have prepared. I will also need to take a real good look at my life and dynamics of it. Just like looking at the course before the race, I want to know where the hills and valleys are and incorporate these details into my game plan. I am married, have children and work to manage just like many of you. These are facts that I need to think on and mentally prepare for prior to executing my plan. Juice fasting would certainly be much easier if I went to a retreat with coaches and a dozen or so other people who were fasting too. That is not what’s happening here. Although I am not at all against that, and I think that is how some people should approach it, I have always fasted within the normal framework of my life. If I need to pack an ice chest with me, I will do it. If I am the only one not eating at a family gathering, then that is the way it’s going to be until I have accomplished my goal. I will be exercising during this fast so this adds an additional element to consider. Too much exercise, too fast will make the fast hard. However, with the right approach and timing, I can usually physically perform well while on a juice fast. In most cases during the early days of the fast I can actually swim, bike and run faster and farther than when I am not on a fast. This usually does not last through the entire juice fast and there is some loss of strength, but when the fast is complete I always rebound stronger than I was before the fast. For this fast, once I get a “feel” that it is time to turn it up on the workouts, I’ll do just that. Having considered all of these elements, I prepared for nearly two weeks prior to Transition and prayed about the matter. I can confidently say that I feel the timing is right for this juice fast and that I am ready to move forward.

Understanding My Metrics I use very basic metrics to record certain aspects of my fast. This is just a way for me to measure results. Some of these are very obvious and others I have provided a brief explanation. In addition, some entries are not provided every single day as the real beneficial changes from juice fasting are sometimes seen over several days or weeks. Supplements and Water Intake During the course of a juice fast I will take super foods and sometimes colloid minerals to supplement nutrition and further contribute to an alkaline environment. I do not add these items to the daily intake list although they are taken periodically. Likewise, my water intake is also not recorded. I try to drink a minimum of 120 oz. of water a day and more on days with exercise.

Friday, June 24, 2011 Transition: Day 1 Morning Notes: The first day of Transition went well. I have been preparing for this fast for about 10 days prior to today. This simply means increasing the consumption of alkaline forming foods and juices as well as replacing breakfast and afternoon meals with smoothies and juice. For most of those days, I only ate one cooked meal, which was dinner. So by now my body is somewhat familiar with not eating during the day and the only real hurdle during Transition will be around dinnertime, which is when I am used to eating. Evening Notes: So far, so good. Dinnertime for me is around 5:30 pm - 6:00 pm and it is now 7:15 and I don't really feel like I have missed a meal. This is a good thing and this is how it is suppose to feel when preparation is done right. Energy today was very good throughout the day. I took a short power nap (20 minutes) as I had my 1 year old with me and needed to put her down. I used an enema to flush out waste as bowel movements are really starting to slow down. This was much needed and it always amazes me how much waste actually accumulates over just a short period of time. Saturday, June 25, 2011 Transition: Day 2 Today was a very good second day of Transition. Energy was good most of the day with just a slight drop in the evening. When I juiced in the afternoon, I juiced up the actual broccoli stems, which I will not be doing again. It kind of made me feel a little nauseated. I felt a little hungry in the evening and my wife made a butternut squash bisque which was delicious. Sunday, June 26, 2011 Transition: Day 3 Today was great. Excellent energy and I can already feel the effects of almost completely eliminating processed food. I exercised twice today with a 1.5 mile run in the morning and about a 400-yard swim in the afternoon. Both workouts felt effortless and I easily could have kept pressing but didn’t want to go hard because I am still adjusting to no food. Exercise will cause my body to call for more calories and before I turn up the workouts I need to make sure that the kind of fuel I am providing it is going to work without me walking around hungry. Monday, June 27, 2011 Transition: Day 4 I got a 4:30 am start this morning, which is my preferred time to start the day. I like to have time alone to pray and study prior to doing anything else. I am already waking up less lethargic and feel awake and alert after just a few minutes. Usually this is not the case. Most days when I am not on a fast, getting up early can be a challenge in itself and I have to warm up for almost 30 minutes sometimes. Typically when I get into the fast itself I need much less sleep. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reactions

Tuesday, June 28, 2011 Transition: Day 5 Today’s energy was kind of mediocre until after I exercised. Once I got back from my run I was well charged and productive all day, in fact is was off the charts after I came out from praying for a bit. It is starting to feel like a fast. I purposely wore no deodorant all day yesterday because I wanted see if there was a decrease in body odor, which is usually the case. As always, there is a decrease in body odor and I didn’t really smell at all. This is somewhat the usual for me going into a fast. Mental clarity is starting to greatly improve. This is key. Last year’s fast I didn’t prepare nearly as well as I did for this one, and the increase in mental clarity seemed to take longer to kick in. I have cut out dairy products, which I was getting from the goat yogurt in the smoothie. This morning’s smoothie consisted of just the fruit, a little soy, 1 tsp. of almond butter and ice. My objective will be to eliminate the soy in the next day or so and hopefully be off the smoothies starting Friday. From then on it will be juices and broths. I also picked up some Teeccino, which is a herbal drink kind of like coffee, but much healthier. In addition to cutting the goat yogurt, I’ll also be cutting the almond butter. It sure is tasty and adds a little weight to the smoothie, but time for it to go.

Wednesday, June 29, 2011 Transition: Day 6 Today was an alright day. I wasn’t bursting with energy, most likely from lack of sleep. I went to bed late and was up early, so that is never a real good combination to facilitate energy. Most of the day today was spent relaxing and in solitude. Most of the time I cannot sleep in the middle of the day and although I tried, I was unable to sleep for more than 20 minutes. In addition to the lack of sleep, my stomach is undergoing cleansing which isn’t always the most comfortable thing to experience. The gurgling and bubbling as well as the constantly having to go to the restroom are why I opted for solitude today. :) In any case I made it through the 6th day of Transition and the level of difficulty was very low, as it should be. Anytime the difficulty level is high it usually means that I haven’t adequately prepared by consuming enough alkalizing foods prior to the juice fast. It takes sufficient alkalinity to buffer the toxic load produced when the body is “house cleaning.” Insufficient alkalinity and the juice fast becomes difficult and the host tends to have many more negative symptoms like headaches, flu like symptoms, cold sores, and a whole boat load of others. This is why I spent an extra 10 days “prior” to transition to alkalize so as too minimize any kind of reactions and have a good fasting experience. So far it seems as though my pre-fast effort was sufficient.

Thursday, June 30, 2011 Transition: Day 7 Good day today. I slept in until a little after 6:00 am. Today was very productive and I was able complete a lengthy project even with my 1 year old at home. The mental clarity was off the charts and I could not pull myself away from the computer. I sipped on broth most of the day and did not juice anything green, or anything at all for that matter. I got so much into my project that I didn’t want to stop and take the time to juice something fresh like I should have. Oh well, that’s life. I’ll make up for it tomorrow. I certainly don’t want to do that regularly because I do need those nutrients. Tomorrow is the official start of the juice fast. I haven’t had a smoothie or any soup in two days because I wanted to see how my body would act. I supplemented with Rice Dream, which of course isn’t “living,” but it also isn’t as heavy as a smoothie or soup, so it can kind of give me a feel for how ready I am. Non-living products like soy, nut milks, rice drinks and so forth, slow down the detoxification process. They are great if one is having too many cleansing reactions and there is a need to slow the detox down a little bit. The objective during my juice fast is to keep taking those products to a bare minimum if at all, and maximize the detoxification. I didn’t take any colon cleansing products until the evening time. Just didn’t feel like dealing with the stomach discomfort during the day and I dosed up on Chomper a couple of hours before bed. I’ll need to continue the colon cleansing for a few more days during the first part of the fast.

Friday, July 1, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 1 - Video I woke up at 5:30 am and felt fine but I did not take enough psyllium husk powder yesterday as I should have and as a result my stomach was not cooperative. When I take colon cleansing products like Chomper and do not follow shortly with psyllium husk powder, then there is not “sufficient bulk” to sweep the waste out. Since I have been off smoothies for a couple of days, there is really not much bulk to anything I am ingesting and consequently I have a lack of movements. This would be ok if the colon was already well cleaned and we were 10 days or so into the fast. I wouldn’t really expect any movement then. But because we are still colon cleansing, movements need to be regular in order to get all the waste out. The best quality colon cleansing products will do me no good if the waste is not coming out. Having used the proper herbs without sufficient output is a recipe for discomfort. Because we do many things by habit, colon cleansing is something that has to be “tackled” much like house cleaning. I don’t always feel like cleaning my house, but it needs to be done regardless of whether I feel like it or not and if I want it cleaned right then I need to do it right. Much of juice fasting and cleansing has to do with doing what needs to be done and not necessarily what one feels like. This is the very nature of discipline and why I have never termed my juice fast “juice feasting.” In 15 years of fasting, it has never felt like “feasting” to me. It is certainly an enjoyable experience when done correctly, but to me, feasting and fasting are like day and night. I love a high quality rib eye steak with asparagus and mashed potatoes with a glass of top-notch Merlot. That is more “feasting” in my book. Of course I can’t always feast. That is a recipe for health problems and primarily the reason why so many people are so sick in the United States. I worked as a paramedic for a few years, so I got a front row seat in observing some of the common health problems that people suffer everyday. Sadly, the majority of 911 calls are for medical emergencies that have their origin in an underlying medical condition, most of which are preventable. Worthy accomplishments require discipline. It is a law, like the law of production or the law of gravity, and the accomplishment of health in a predominantly unhealthy civilization requires some level of discipline. I have always respected and admired raw food enthusiast and practitioners.

I think a raw food diet is a superior diet and perhaps I’ll take on that lifestyle one day. I don’t know, we shall see. The overall day was fine even though my stomach wanted to do its own thing today. Today’s intake outline will reflect what my colon-cleansing regimen is “supposed” to look like.

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 2 - Video Day 2 was chill. I spent time with my two babies and took care of a few things around the house. I felt good today but energy was more of a calm stable kind of energy than a "charged up and ready to go" kind of energy. I took a long nap in the middle of the day for almost two hours and it seems that I am getting better rest the last few nights as well. I took my colon-cleansing regimen today and although I certainly prefer a clean colon, I don't like the process of colon cleaning. I will most likely take a break from the regimen tomorrow. I made a new broth today that I really liked. Broths add a nice touch and can be surprisingly strengthening. I drank about 6 cups of broth and felt stronger in the evening than I did during the day. About an hour after the broth I went for an evening run and even though my colon cleansing products were doing their thing, it was a good run. Sunday, July 3, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 3 - Video This is the first day I actually woke up and felt like eating. It was kind of odd because it has been awhile since I actually felt "hungry" but we handled it fine. Yesterday's run kicked up my appetite a little which is why I wanted to take the workouts slowly. Energy today was not what I like it to be. I didn't "feel" like being productive even though I ran some errands and did what I needed to. It wasn't at all a bad day, just not as upbeat as I’d like. I am glad to be taking a break from colon cleansing products. My stomach feels much better and is at ease.

Monday, July 4, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 4 - Video I started the day with prayer and then a long run. I completed almost 6 miles and ran about ½ the time. As with the run a few days ago, it went great and I didn’t really feel like I was working at all until the last mile or so. I want to condition myself for a triathlon later this year if all goes as planned. I haven’t raced in two years so it certainly would be great to be in the atmosphere again. It is so easy to slip into inactivity and allow life’s “to do’s” to snuff out vibrancy. Too many of us make health and fitness a priority only when we get a bad report from the physician. Although I think that it is great when one gets into shape to regain their health and take back the level of fitness that they are entitled to, I would prefer “not” to have to be ill in order to get motivated. I have been active ever since I can remember, and even the years where I can’t remember all the details, my mother tells me that I was an incredibly active little boy. Unfortunately, although I have fitness programming running in my subconscious from all the years of working out, I don’t always have a consciously active running program like I should. In other words, I tend to let my workouts slide. Now at 40 years old, in my opinion, it is essential to maintain an active lifestyle. As I get older, even though I have the ability to rebound and get back to an acceptable level of fitness, it is not as easy as 5 years ago. This is where juice fasting comes into play and is such a blessing because it can seemingly stop the clock. I expected to get hungry in the evening because of this morning’s work out. The call for more calories came around 5:00 pm and lasted for a few hours. Of course it doesn’t help that it is Independence Day for us and a gathering at my sister’s home presented a wide array of food choices. Ahh yes….discipline.

Tuesday, July 5, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 5 - Video I went to bed last night with an incredibly bad stomachache and woke up mildly bloated. For me, the stomach issues this early in the fast usually mean that I still have much work to do cleaning out the colon. So I flushed out multiple times today with a 2-quart enema and sure enough, I had quite a bit of old waste coming out. Even after today’s regimen, I don't feel I'm done. I contacted a colonic hydrotherapist and it looks like she's going to allow me to come in and not only have a professional colonic done but maybe interview her about the process and their services as well. This should be good stuff and I am looking forward to bringing on the big guns. I have cut my coffee intake in half and I must say that it feels a little odd. My energy is good, but I feel much more calm and not as anxious as I sometimes feel, especially when I have multiple tasks that I am trying to accomplish. I tried to kick the caffeine with last year’s juice fast but I was just not well prepared to do it. I am a long time coffee drinker, but I think this time we got it whipped. Wednesday, July 6, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 6 Time is really flying by. After 6 days of juice fasting, I am so far very pleased with the results and also very happy with the fact that I have not had any cleansing reactions whatsoever. This is not to say that I won’t have any, but even if I do, the intensity and frequency of such have been minimized by proper preparation. I pressed myself a little harder in the pool today and swam 1000 yards. It felt great to be able to step it up a little and as usual, the energy was great. The only reason I didn’t do more is because I want to be careful with really working out hard so as to not have any problems while on a fast. I know what to expect from my body when I press it hard not being on a juice fast, but while on a juice fast I am going to use caution. The accomplishment of a 30 day juice fast is more important than increasing my work out capacity. After the fast is over, I’ll be able to make significant gains in my work outs in much less time.

Thursday, July 7, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 7 - Video Having the colonic today was the right thing to do. The thought crossed my mind while driving that I didn’t want to wait until next week, for the appointment that I already had set. Enemas are just not as effective as a colonic. They certainly can provide some relief but making the decision to have a colonic today was what I needed and the fact that they literally got me into a session in 30 minutes was an added bonus. I have gone to this particular place before but they have since grown and have many more rooms available. I was actually seen by the owner and she did a great job. I still feel like I have a bit of water in me, but that is to be expected with the amount of water that was in my colon. The rest of the day was uneventful and I even wasted about 2 hours watching Unsolved Mysteries! I am in no way a coach potato and spend little time watching TV, but sometimes I feel like I need to stop and do nothing or else I become consumed by productivity and trying to meet my objectives. That would certainly be out of balance. I mean what good is it to get to the top of “Success Mountain” if the rest of your life is ruined when you get there?

Friday, July 8, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 8 Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise…Not sure where I read that statement but I believe it anyhow. There is something about silence that is very empowering. The morning hours are my favorite time of day. I believe there is no better investment that a human being can make than to seek God early. I learned how to pray from the examples in the bible and the life of a man named William M. Branham (http://www.williambranham.com/). He said that if you want to get close to God, read your bible and pray. In my entire life I have never personally met anyone who I thought lived closer to God than him. In addition, there is no single minister that I know of that had such a supernatural ministry (and I have heard a LOT of preachers in my life). I mean come on, when the resurrection of the dead occurs, cancer is healed, as well as almost every possible ailment a human being can have, and countless testimonies of healing and deliverance following a ministry, I think that’s kind of a clue….hmm…. might be somebody worth listening to. God always did identify himself with the supernatural. Of course it is a part of the Gospel, and not the whole Gospel. But you simply don’t have the full Gospel without the supernatural. Anyway, I have put the best advice I have ever been given (read your bible and pray) to the test and know that it’s true. Yet in almost 20 years since God interrupted my life, prayer remains the most mysterious discipline I undertake. It takes faith to pray and reach out to him who you cannot see; but it is also this reaching out to him that unlocks faith and brings God close. For me, it is prayer that has made God much more real and brings an awareness of his being. It brings the bible to life and makes my daily affairs salty with his presence. God help me to pray more! Why do we as children of God settle for less? I had a lot of things to do today so after my morning orange juice, I loaded my water bottles with brown rice syrup and water, which is the way I carb up for workouts while juice fasting. It provides good fuel for long workouts because it is a complex “time released energy source,” making it a lasting fuel.

67

Brown rice syrup is roughly 50% soluble complex carbohydrate, 45% maltose and 3% glucose. The glucose is absorbed into the blood stream immediately, the maltose digests in over an hour and a half, and the complex carbohydrates burn over two to three hours. It is usually listed from neutral to slightly acidic on the pH scale. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

Saturday, July 9, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 9 Today’s enema flush produced a load of old waste. I am not really surprised. With the way my stomach has been feeling, it’s pretty consistent with what is coming out. I once heard a notable physician say that efficient bowel elimination from the time you eat is about 8 hours; any longer than that and you are suffering from some degree of constipation. I don’t know that I have ever been that regular. Perhaps that’s why the colon cleaning part of the detox is producing so much waste. This is the reason I have planned on having at least 3 colonics during this fast. 18 months of not doing a long juice fast and I am certainly paying the price. That’s not to say that I have to do a 30 day juice fast every year. I could eat better and such a challenging feat would probably not be needed. But as of right now, it still gets me back on track making improvements to my health. I grilled some ribs and chicken for my family tonight and actually tasted the chicken. However, I chewed it and then spit it out. I didn’t really feel like I was missing anything and wasn’t at all overwhelmed by the need to eat. It did smell and taste good, but right now it is contrary to my objective. I did not intend on really doing any exercise today because I pressed myself hard yesterday and wanted to see how I would recover. Recovery was better than I expected. I kicked up the settings on the stationary bike at the gym and rode intervals for almost an hour yesterday and today my muscles do not feel sore at all. They do feel a little weak, but not sore. Alkalinity is a wonderful thing. Even though I was at the pool today, I didn’t carb up with brown rice syrup or anything for a swim because I was really at the pool to spend time with my son. Good stable energy today. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

Sunday, July 10, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 10 So far today has been the worst day of this juice fast. The main reason is because of the process of eliminating caffeine from my diet. I am drinking ¼ of what my normal intake has been for a long time. Last year’s fast did not break the caffeine addiction. However, even though I expect to be able to accomplish the final twoweeks of the fast caffeine free, minor withdrawals go with the territory. I was exhausted today. No caffeine headache, which I am thankful for, but I was incredibly tired and moody pretty much all day long. There was a brief episode of very mild muscle aches after I awoke from a nap, which is typical of caffeine withdrawals (at least it is for me). Because I am coming off of a drug, the natural inclination is to fill the void with food, something that will offer an exchange for the “organismic” feeling that drugs provide. Processed food is very good at this, especially if you are accustomed to eating it all the time. Many recovering addicts gain weight on account of increasing their consumption of food, which certainly comes at a high price considering the problems that occur with obesity. The craving for food was strongest today and combined with the effects of kicking caffeine, I suppose I should give today a fasting difficulty rating of 4. It was certainly bearable, but not enjoyable. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

Monday, July 11, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 11 - Video After a good night’s rest, I woke up bright and early. Since my body was screaming for caffeine yesterday, the single cup of coffee I had this morning was more than enough. I think I can say with some certainty that we are just about there. I know it seems kind of lame…I mean come on, “You can’t go without one cup of coffee?” Umm…No. It is what it is people. I could…but because this juice fast is going so well, I “choose” to do it slowly so that we don’t have too many days like yesterday. Much of the morning and early afternoon was spent hiking in the foothills. It’s always great to be up there and it is one of my favorite places to be. I felt nice and strong for the entire hike, left the area and had a wonderful visit with my mother, picked up both my kids and came home to clean up a bit and make dinner. My wife believes that I can read her mind because I constantly make a dinner that she was craving without her telling me it was what she wanted. I don’t know….it is something that occurs rather frequently. She got fried tilapia for dinner tonight. Smelled delicious. Tuesday, July 12, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 12 Today seemed like a long day. So many things can sap your energy and today was one of those days. I guess it all depends on your lifestyle and all the factors that go on. There’s just so much that can require one’s attention and time. Time is valuable and I do value mine. I have learned that if I don’t “take” the time for myself there are certainly many people that won’t hesitate to take it. So I try and stay aware and vigilant with protecting it. My legs were a bit sore from the long hike yesterday but it wasn’t too bad. I suppose I should have slept a little longer for better recovery but it didn’t happen that way. I am simply not sleeping like I should because I am not going to bed at a decent time. My brain is not wired to nap in the daytime and even if I have the opportunity to do so, it doesn’t work out for very long. No workouts today, I’ll take it easy and hit the pool tomorrow. I still have a fair amount of old waste coming out. It’s crazy how much waste human beings can carry around. I imagine there are many people much worse than me. I am taking colon cleaning herbs today and tomorrow to further break up old waste so that Thursday’s colonic will be really effective. Wednesday, July 13, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 13 Ok, so I don’t feel like writing today. I am dragging and I seem to remember a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that said, “A man is what he thinks about all day long.” Well… right now I am thinking about coffee all the day long, and since I can’t have it I want to scream! You know, I have read where some “professionals” have said caffeine addiction is all psychology and that there is no physical addiction but it is all in the mind. They seem to forget that caffeine is a drug. I’d like to see them drink 4 cups of coffee day for a single month and then just stop. Yeah, we’ll see how mental it is then. Some people need their brains baptized.

Thursday, July 14, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 14 - Video Horrible day today… I think it is mostly caffeine withdrawals because I am not really having any cleansing reactions. Feels like the end of the world with no coffee. It is amazing to see how negative my thinking is as a result of not having caffeine today. I mean, my thoughts are really poor. Poor outlook, poor attitude, hate the world, and asking myself, why am I doing this fast again? Ugh! Gotta press through… I didn’t get the results I expected from today’s colonic. I felt better but it seemed a little rushed. The timing for a video interview with this particular colonic therapist wasn’t right and I did not have the opportunity for it. Oh well, life goes on. I tried her service and liked the atmosphere and her technique, but the results were not there today. Most colon hydrotherapists agree that the effectiveness of colonics is cumulative and recommend 3 to 5 colonics for first timers or those who haven’t had one for a very long time. I am going to stay on course with my colon cleansing mission and put the 3 -5 colonic theory to the test. I would like to try yet another therapist just for the sake of variety and experience. Friday, July 15, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 15 I have reached the halfway point. Although today was not as bad as yesterday, I still was missing my cup of coffee this morning. I had some Teeccino, but it doesn’t even come close to the dose of caffeine that I am used to in the morning. I am just glad that it was a better day. I still feel really odd without the drug. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I went for a light morning run and took both my kids with me in the dual jogger. After that, I spent the rest of the day with them at the pool and on a short walk on a nature trail. They are so precious. I listened to almost 3 hours of an audio book today that is worth mentioning. The authors name is Viktor E. Frankl and the book is called Man’s Search for Meaning. It was referenced by Steven Covey in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and is a about a psychiatrist’s personal account of being a prisoner in the Nazi concentration camps. He talks of how the mental attitude of the prisoners was one of the biggest factors in how they handled such circumstances. Anyway, it is an outstanding piece of work and if you are going through challenging circumstances, this book will completely change your outlook. No doubt. Oddly enough, I needed this book today. I questioned God on some circumstances and expressed my frustration earlier this morning and I had this book on my eReader and the audio on my IPod within 2 hours…. After going through most of the book, my challenging circumstances seem incredibly small. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

Saturday, July 16, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 16 I am glad today I finally felt like I was getting over the caffeine hump. It was a very good day today and I felt somewhat back to normal as far as energy was concerned. Even without exercise we were sharp, on task and productive. I finished the book Man’s Search for Meaning and am going to go through it a couple more times this coming week. It’s the kind of book where just one pass is not going to do it. I did some clothes shopping today, as my expected regular weight should be around 170-175-post juice fast. As far as I’m concerned, the completion of the fast entitles me to a few perks, clothes being at the top of the list. I am also starting to plan my post fast menu for August. This is important. One thing that needs to happen is for me to install new mental programming regarding what I am eating on a regular basis. To do that I need to have a plan in place PRIOR to the end of the fast, and have my cabinets, freezer and refrigerator stocked so that I know what I am eating on any given day. There are certainly going to be days where I deviate from the scheduled menu, but what I am after is careful accounting of the calories. Programs like http://www.fitclick.com are really great for accounting, which is a discipline in itself. I have used it before and really liked it. We shall see…I am like many people in that my diet can be good and bad sometimes. I like the stuff that tastes good, but that stuff on a regular basis kills performance and takes me completely out of balance if I let it. If “I” let it. Sunday, July 17, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 17 I had a good day but still feel a bit spacey. I hope to soon be adjusted to life after Starbucks. I mean, my energy is good but it almost seems like a different kind of energy. I can’t say that I would recommend kicking coffee during a juice fast. It robs you of some of the euphoria that goes along with the fast and replaces it with an odd kind of “spacey-ness.” I think it would have been better to kick it PRIOR to the fast by at least a few weeks. I went for a run today and was more than able to kick out a few miles but it just feels so odd. Monday, July 18, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 18 Monday started off slow but picked up in the afternoon and I was flying high most of the day. Green juices provide so much better energy than orange and/or carrot. Those are ok for a short kick (real short), but as always, I find that my best energy days are green days, where I have juiced some spinach, cucumbers, kale, celery as well as beets. I usually throw in some carrot to sweeten it up, but I am really after the benefits of the green juices. I was very busy today and it is now past 10 pm here, so it’s time to retire. I can’t believe it’s already been 18 days…. getting close to the home stretch. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

Tuesday, July 19, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 19 - Video Tuesday was busy. I had a lot of things to do today and it just seemed like there wasn’t enough time in the day to get it done. I have started to cut back on some of the calories that I am consuming and noted no real difference in energy today. Instead of 36 oz. of orange juice, I’ll have 16 oz. and it seems to be just fine, albeit for a short time. People sometimes associate juice fasting with losing a lot of weight automatically but the reality is that calories are calories and you can actually gain weight on a juice fast if you are consuming more calories than you need. Since I would like to shed a few more pounds I am cutting back some of the calories to take advantage of the last week and half of the fast. I did however have a couple of “small” glasses of wine. This is not something I normally do on a fast but I compromised a little on account of making a special dinner for my wife and not being able to eat with her. She does not like when I fast because she loses an eating buddy for a month. So the least I could do after 3 weeks of not eating with her is have a little wine. I couldn’t say that wine is anything that “should” be consumed during a fast. Remember that anything you consume that is acid forming or in the case of wine, which is an actual toxin, is counter productive for the most efficient detoxification. Juice fasting can affect those around you in a number of ways. Some people could care less if you are fasting and don’t think twice to eat whatever they normally eat. Others ask a lot of questions and are curious about the discipline. There is also the group that might be real uncomfortable because they are eating what they know is not the most healthy food. Having someone around that is juice fasting and in the process of detoxification is like shining a light on our bad eating habits. When someone calls you health nut or some other fitness related derogatory name, I am of the belief that they may be a bit uncomfortable with their own diet. I have grown accustomed to it over the years and am well aware that they are just a little uncomfortable. I use comments like “Wow that looks really good” or “Wish I could have some of that.” My objective in doing so is to try and ease the level of their discomfort if I sense they are “really” feeling bad. My experience is that deep down inside, most people want to eat right but may simply lack the discipline or have no clue where to begin. Juice fasting seems like 105

an unreachable achievement because they think they will be hungry. Although a correctly executed 30-day juice fast will not result in a month of hunger, it does require some personal discipline. People who are accustomed to disciplining themselves in one way or another most likely will be able to jump the hurdle of Transition more easily than those who are not. For the undisciplined person, a retreat with others that are fasting in an undistracted environment may be a better way to start. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 20 Today was chill. I went for a 90-minute walk at a moderate pace smack in the middle of the heat but the sun felt really good. Since we always have the air on in our home during the summer months, it sometimes feels extra cold because I am juice fasting. I feel like its time to go back for a colonic again. 3 weeks into juice fasting means pretty much no bowel movement. There’s no real leverage or bulk to keep waste moving out and even though juicing doesn’t produce a whole lot of waste, there is always going to be wasteful by-products of digestion. Enemas help but the colonic is just so much better. There also is what is called a colema board that can be purchased for between 200 and 300 dollars but I do not have one and don’t expect I’ll be purchasing one anytime soon. Anyway, we’ll set an appointment with yet another therapist and then compare the results. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

Thursday, July 21, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 21 It is the end of the day and my stomach is irritated. That is the only thing that I can say that I don’t like about juice fasting is the lack of movements. It’s just not a real comfortable thing to have to deal with, but it is part of the course and the pros far outweigh the cons. After weeks of exposing my son to the swimming pool, today was the first day he swam on his own. I was so proud of him and happy to see the excitement and confidence on his face. It was one of my objectives that I wanted to complete by the end of the year so we got it done early and I can check it off the list. Next in line is the elimination of training wheels, which I think we can do real soon. He is only 4 so I am happy to have him by my side when I am training in the pool. My 18 month old will probably swim before she is 2. She can hold her breath underwater for about 7 seconds and for some reason likes to show her big grin while under. Silly child… I am starting to think about food more and have a real nice dinner scheduled for my wife and I on July 31st. This is usually what happens around day 20 and I have learned to expect it. It does not make the fast harder, but food does look VERY attractive around this time. I transition out of the juice fast a little differently than others and generally will use psyllium husk powder because it bulks up and can get the bowels moving without my having to actually break the fast. This allows me to transition my stomach back to a regular kind of movement without eating. In this way, by the time I have completed the last day of juice fasting my stomach will be ready for solid food usually by the end of the first day off the fast. It has worked very well in the past and I trust that it will be the same this time around. I usually break with a smoothie, try some really soft foods for lunch and then if all goes well, I go for a regular dinner in the evening. I am looking forward to the reward of a high quality dinner. Day 21 has been good. No juice fasting problems or complications whatsoever. I feel great, and even though I am looking forward to eating, I am not at all interested in deviating from my objective. Kind of like a triathlon…the last leg of the race can be the most challenging BUT…if you trained right, you’ll be ready for it.

Friday, July 22, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 22 - Video The children and I are camping this weekend and I tend to do all the packing and so forth on the day of, which means today I was “working.” I had my 18-monthold daughter home with me so I was multitasking literally all day. I really should stagger the camping preparation a few days out but I am always working on a project or something that I don’t want to pull away from. I had a lot of work online to do today as well, so I was swamped from sunrise to sunset. I wasn’t “stressed” but I was “pressed” and had a database issue with one of the web properties we own, so that was a bit agitating under the circumstances. We managed to get to the lake just before sunset so it worked out. Juice fasting always seems to help me get things done more efficiently and lethargy is something that is very rare. I still wake in the morning and think about coffee. However, it does seem that its grasp on me is somewhat waning. I am growing used to a cup of Teeccino in its place and am glad for a healthier alternative.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 23 - Video The entire day today was spent at the beach. The sun was blistering hot today and the beach was pretty packed. I got out there early and set up my canopy and ice chest but even though I had shade, children constantly need to be attended to so the sun pounded me good today. It seems to suck the very energy out of you. But never fear, plenty of juice was near. I juiced up 2 liters of carrots, celery, kale and beets yesterday as well as 98 ounces of organic grape juice and lemonade. I think given the heat I could have drank it all today if I had been swimming but I did not swim today. My attention was completely on my kids so no taking advantage of an open water swim today. The water was beautiful and maybe tomorrow I’ll have an opportunity. It’s 6:30 pm right now and both of them are sleeping which gives me the chance for a journal entry. Oh, food looked so good today. Temptation, temptation…I got to pay the price. The Bible says there is profit in all labor, so even though I don’t see “all” the benefits to this juice fast right away, I believe that it’s a law no different than the law of gravity, and my effort will return a reward. In many ways it already has.

Sunday, July 24, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 24 Sunday I was up early and was one of the first campers to ship out. I need to take advantage of the children being asleep and pack everything up. I remember when I hit my 20’s and started camping on my own, it was only then that I realized how much work it can be when you are camping with children. I had everything wrapped up in less than an hour and they were glad to be headed home to see Mommy. Camping with family has always been a time of enjoyment as well as indulgence. However, not indulging this time around certainly gave me a different perspective. A big part of me was missing the indulging part of the weekend, but a more determined part knows that what I am doing is not only best for me, but could potentially help a lot of other people. I have watched juicing really improve the quality of other peoples’ lives even without fasting. Alkalinity is truly the key to a vibrant and healthy lifestyle. No matter if I stick with it or not, it’s true anyhow. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

Monday, July 25, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 25 I fit into my 19 year old son’s swim shorts today, which had me feeling pretty good. It was a goal of mine that I actually accomplished early. I can fit into some 32’s depending on the cut, so I have gone from a size 34/36 (waist) to a 32/34 which is alright by me. I have lost a lot of fat around my arms and chest but I have also lost some strength. After juice fasting.is complete though, I always come back stronger. Today’s swim was much needed. Even though I had a heavy workload and was active over the weekend, I didn’t really get any cardio in. I made up for it today though. The swim felt real good and the water is starting to feel like home again, which is something I haven’t felt for a couple of years. The old saying is true: Use it or lose it. It doesn’t take long to lose all your hard work when it comes to acquiring fitness. You can get it back, but it is so much better to simply maintain it than it is to lose it and try to get it back. I am looking forward to eating. I broiled some sweet and sour pork chops with pineapple, onions and bell peppers for my family and it smelled pretty good after a good work out. I held my position though…look but don’t touch. I worked too hard to throw in the towel now. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

Tuesday, July 26, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 26 I had two sick babies home to take care of and if you have children you know what that means. They were stuck to Daddy like glue today and would not let me out of their sight, even to go to the bathroom. However, I felt a need to flush out the bowels and managed to accomplish what I needed to. I don’t really like enemas much anymore. The down side to enemas is that they are not always real effective and sometimes you’re stuck with water in your bowels, which is not comfortable at all. In addition, you do have to deal with the smell. There isn’t much in this world that smells as bad as old fecal matter. I may simply try going with a colonic once a week for the next juice fast and omit the enema all together. Who knows? All in all, not a bad day. I’m a little tired today because I didn’t get a good night’s rest. Sick babies make for poor sleep. I made a sockeye salmon broth this evening and very much enjoyed it. It will be the last broth I make until the next time I juice fast. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

Wednesday, July 27, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 27 My wife is excited to see my fast come to a close. We have dinner reservations at a very nice restaurant for Sunday evening. I am looking forward to a cheat meal. Well actually I am looking forward to a meal, period. It feels like being on a vacation and having really enjoyed it but we’re ready to go home and sleep in our own bed. I have some alone time scheduled in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains and will close the last two days of this fast giving thanks to God by giving him my fullundivided attention. This juice fast came by prayer. Early in June I felt I was again out of control with my diet and personal discipline so I prayed about it. I asked the Lord to give me what I needed to accomplish this juice fast and get back on track with where I know I should be. I believe that any ability a person has is given by the grace of God, including the ability to fast efficiently. I know some would argue with that and I do believe we have a part in the process of polishing those talents and accomplishing anything. However, I did not bring myself into this world, neither did I raise myself or provide for myself as an infant or child. Some intelligence brought me here and furnished everything I had need of as an infant, child and still does even as I am a man. Many people have heard of Jesus Christ, but until you actually meet him yourself, you’ll only have a faint idea of him. I had this privilege in 1994 and it only takes once, to change you forever. Once you meet him, then the intelligence behind what we know as life begins to unfold. Life then becomes like a school, where God himself is the teacher expressing himself to you. The more you know him, life takes on a completely different perspective and has so much more to it than what meets the eye, and that is regardless of the obstacles and disappointments. The more you know him, the more you understand that all things are possible to you, if you can but believe.

Thursday, July 28, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 28 I have heard some impressive stories of how people went in for a colonic and removed 10 lbs. of waste in a single session. Although I believed such stories, I am much more of a believer after today. I went in for my third colonic and was astounded at the amount of waste the came out from my intestines. It was absolutely amazing. I have never experienced such a relief with regards to bowel movements and although I did not lose 10 lbs., I felt 20 lbs. lighter after the session. The therapist did an incredible job this time around and I was very impressed at her technique. I did end up going back to the same therapist who did my second session because she was the only one that had the availability that I needed. When they say that first timers should have at least five colonics, I am convinced that it is the absolute truth. Never again will I do a juice fast without incorporating colonics into the regimen. I probably won’t need as many during the next juice fast because I do plan to implement colonics into my regular maintenance much like going to the dentist or chiropractor. I am really curious to see what happens next week as I have my fourth appointment on Thursday, August 4th. Great day today. Friday, July 29, 2011 Juice Fast: Day 29 It is now 9:00 pm and I am in my tent camping in the El Dorado National Forest. It has been at least 7 years since I have been here alone. I used to come up here every year when I was single and pack my Bible and a variety of materials to study and pray. Being here brings back a lot of lonely memories. Those were difficult times back then and a very dark season in my life. Oddly enough if it wasn’t for the dark times this place wouldn’t be special to me. I baptized both my older boys up here and the wife and I have been up here several times since we have been together. I believe there is a power behind getting alone with God. I have places that I go to that are closer to home but out of the city, which is the main reason I don’t drive all the way up here for solitude. The scriptures are very clear that Jesus would often leave the crowd and get alone to pray. I believe it was the very key to success in his ministry. Of course he was the Messiah and that certainly had a lot to do with his ministry, but it is apparent to me that much of what he did was an example for the church who is supposed to carry on the same type of ministry. Prayer and fasting are very powerful spiritual weapons. But it does take someone who is spiritual to even begin to comprehend that. This is why the Bible says you must be born again to see (understand) the Kingdom of Heaven. That simply means that a person has to have his or her own experience with God to know that He is. This personal experience with Jesus Christ makes all the difference in the world, because it literally opens up another world and brings the unseen into your reality, changing you forever. That’s the truth. I began juice fasting in my late twenties as a way to discipline myself to get closer to God. I noticed that ministries that had a particular efficiency and anointing were always congruent with fasting and praying believers. So I simply decided to copy the pattern that I saw in the Bible and clues that I would sometimes get from hearing or reading sermons. One thing I know for sure is that the most powerful experiences with the supernatural that I have had in my life have almost always come behind fasting and prayer, without a doubt. It is just as powerful today as it ever was.

For that reason, I am expecting. I know that sacrificing time to be with the Lord in addition to the time I already give him does not go unnoticed by God. It never has and it never will, because he said; “They that seek me will find me” and “The soul of the diligent shall be made fat.” With these things in mind, and with a good base of experience to draw from, I am expecting something from God just as sure as I am expecting the sun to rise in the morning. What exactly and when I don’t know, and I don’t really need to know. I would rather he bless me as he sees fit. He already knows everything I need. He knows it better than I do. Saturday, July 30, 2011 Water Fast: Day 1, Overall Fast: Day 30 - Video Today was relaxing for the most part. I had a nasty headache for about half the day from the slight cold that my lovely children handed to me before I left. We still made it through the final day without any real trouble but the headache, no calories and the hike made water fasting not as pleasant as I would have liked. Water fasting is something that I rarely do EVER, so I lack experience with this type of fasting but know that physical activity should be kept to a bare minimum. I did that for the most part but I did need to hike back out of the small canyon that I was in to get back to the truck. I was indeed weak and every foot uphill felt like a mile. I drank a little more than 1.5 gallons of water today so I felt plenty hydrated. The closing of this fast went well and looking back at the entire month I am very happy with both the journey and the results. I am not sure that I would change anything except for kicking caffeine. If I had to do it again, I think I would have kicked the caffeine prior to the fast by at least a month. Although I did not have any severe withdrawals or the massive headache that is so common when trying to kick caffeine, I did seem to be robbed of some of my juice fasting energy. In addition, the juice fast felt somewhat odd and spacey in the days after I was completely off caffeine. Caffeine is a very powerful drug and I think I will be avoiding coffee for a while if not permanently. I simply would like to see how it is to NOT be dependent on it the way I have been for so many years. This juice fast has certainly been an experience worth every moment. Sunday, July 31, 2011 Transition Out: Day 31 I was home before midnight and actually having 32 days of juice fasting, I was more than ready to eat. Just prior to midnight, I heated Portabella mushrooms, onions and garlic in olive oil and let that sit until about 15 minutes before midnight. I prepared a salad with baby spinach, an heirloom tomato, avocado, cucumber, and red bell pepper. I sprinkled about 2 oz. of goat milk cheddar on the warm mushrooms and onions and I was ready. I also set down with a bag of fresh kale chips and at midnight the fast was officially broken. I chewed slowly and thoroughly, eating only half the salad and some of the kale chips. I kind of waited to ensure my stomach wasn't going to freak out and it didn't. The few days of pysillium husk powder did the trick and my stomach was ready. I put the remainder of the salad in a container and placed it in the refrigerator for the next day and THEN….I sinned….. I had a serving of All Natural white cheddar Cheetos that actually did NOT taste all that great. Lastly, I had half of a non-dairy, wheat and hydrogenated oil free chocolate chip cookie, which was delicious! It may sound like a lot, but my portions were small and I certainly could have eaten a lot more. After a good night’s sleep, I awoke and felt fine. No stomach problems and was very conscious of the fact that I had more strength than I went to bed with. I started the morning with a cup of Teeccino and 2 slices of Ezekiel Raisin Bread. I still have a slight headache and a cold. Weight Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure General Feeling Exercise Fasting Difficulty Cleansing Reaction

General Questions Regarding Juice Fasting: Why did you kick coffee on your juice fast? I have wanted to kick the coffee habit for some time. It just so happens that the timing was right for me on this juice fast and it worked out. I have done juice fasts for an entire 30 days with coffee and still have had tremendous benefits. However, it is not optimal for a juice fast for a number of reasons. Coffee has a lot of tannins in it and it is hard on the adrenal glands. Kicking it can be very difficult depending on the severity of the addiction, and it can be either harder or easier to do it during a fast depending on when and how you do it. In addition, coffee is very acid forming so you are going to slow down the detoxification process by consuming it. It is also a diuretic which means that it is going to cause you to lose fluid during a fast which means you will have to drink much more just to maintain the necessary fluids. The real objective of detoxification is to give the body a break from the heavy workload of processing processed foods, and do some house cleaning, which is what it does during a fast. Coffee slows this process down and decreases the quality of the juice fast. One certainly can do a juice fast with coffee and still get good results and I personally would do a juice fast with coffee rather than not do one at all. That being said, I would stick to a high-grade organic coffee with high quality condiments, like organic cane sugar, sucanant and a soy-based creamer or goat milk. If you have a brand preference all ready in place and it is not of the highest quality, it is best to make the switch prior to the fast so that it is one less adjustment to have to make. You may also need significantly less coffee as you get into the juice fast as well as after a colonic, so be mindful of the fact that your regular “dose” may actually be too much. Can I do a juice fast without colon cleansing? Well you certainly can do anything you want on your juice fast. However, if the objective is to have a good detoxification, I believe colon cleansing to be an extremely useful part of the process. The length of your juice fast is also a factor. If you are juice fasting for a short time, like 3 days to a week, then you can probably get by with using herbal colon cleansers and psyllium husk powder, but you are

150

Copyright 2011 Michael Morales

going to get what you put into it. Another factor is going to be your overall colon health prior to the fast. If you are backed up and carrying a significant amount of waste, then it is unlikely that herbal cleansers and psyllium husk powder are going to get your bowels really clean. If you have a poor diet and do not have regular bowel movements that are consistent with the frequency of your meals (e.g. 3 movements for 3 meals) then you are at some degree suffering from constipation and almost certainly would benefit greatly from a colon cleanse by way of a colonic during your juice fast. This having been the best juice fast I have done is largely due to the part the colonics played. The enemas just help to move out some waste produced from the consumption of juice, but I have to admit that having 3 colonics done during this fast produced much better results than prior juice fasts using enemas, herbal cleanser and psyllium husk powder. Many people are afraid of having a colonic done and there is still a very real stigma associated with colon cleansing. I invite you to talk to some people that have done it, or do it on a regular basis. Look at their skin and their overall appearance. The first time I heard anything about colonics was from a 75 year old man I met in the natural food store. His skin was so radiant and he had such a positive energy about him that I had to ask what he was doing. The two things that he emphasized were raw foods and colon cleansing and he “really” emphasized the colon cleansing. Unfortunately after speaking with him I had only “one” colonic done and it was not while on a juice fast. I got side tracked and didn’t go back until this 2011 juice fast. Most therapists recommend 3 – 5 colonics for those who have never had one done and after this juice fast I understand that to be accurate. How well do you sleep during a juice fast? Initially during Transition and the early days of the fast I generally have some trouble getting to sleep and need less sleep than normal. However, I noticed with the 2011 juice fast it seemed that this was very brief and most of the time I slept really well. It is not uncommon though for people on a juice fast to have trouble sleeping, especially early in the fast. Your body uses much less energy on digestion while fasting which has a lot to do with the increased “alertness” associated with a juice fast and sleeplessness. In addition, if you are constantly consuming fresh

151

Copyright 2011 Michael Morales

juice, this provides an incredible amount of nutrients to your system, which also contributes to sleeplessness. How do you avoid cleansing reactions during a juice fast? The weeks prior to the juice fast are very important. Preparing the body for a detox by consuming fresh alkalizing raw produce and juices as well as minimizing processed and cooked foods is essential. I have done juice fasting with and without preparation and the preparation is the most critical element in minimizing the amount and intensity of cleansing reaction. This is especially true if you have a poor diet consisting of mostly processed and cooked foods. Can I drink soymilk on a juice fast? Juice fasting is an individual affair and your selection of fuel is up to you. However, with regards to the efficiency of detoxification, if you can eliminate soy products, dairy products, and nut milks early on in the fast you will have a more effective detoxification. These items are either acid forming or neutral with regards to pH. The objective is to decrease acid forming and neutral items on the pH scale and increase alkaline forming products. Remember that acid forming and neutral items on the pH scale slow the detoxification process down. These items are great if you are having a lot of cleansing reactions or cleansing reactions that are really intense. They will slow the detox down which will usually decrease or eliminate the symptoms. Looking back on this juice fast, is there anything that you would have done differently? Yes, I would have liked to have kicked coffee by at least a month prior to the fast. It took me almost 3 weeks to completely adjust to having no caffeine and it did make a certain portion of the juice fast a drag. The ideal juice fast will provide an incredible abundance of energy. This is going to be minimized when the body is kicking addiction and /or is experiencing severe cleansing reactions. I would much rather have a juice fast that is bursting with energy everyday than one where a portion of the fast my face is dragging on the floor. However, I must also consider that the few days that I had during this juice fast, which I really consider “bad days,” are more than worth it in exchange for the elimination of an addiction.

152

Copyright 2011 Michael Morales

Combined with faith and prayer, juice fasting can be extremely useful for helping kick addictions like alcohol, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, coffee, prescription drugs etc. But one still needs to expect some level of withdrawal symptoms associated with the elimination of such chemical vices and consequently some “less than perfect” days along the juice fasting journey. In addition, it would also be wise to consider professional guidance and counseling when using juice fasting to assist in the elimination of serious addictions. What is Bentonite and why exactly did you use it? Bentonite is an absorbent with an ionic charge that magnetically attracts toxins and parasites. Used in conjunction with herbal cleansers, it can help remove waste from the colon walls. The objective is to use the herbs to break up the old waste that is stuck to the colon walls and follow after a short time with a psyllium husk and Bentonite shake to move out the waste. Bentonite needs to be used carefully because it is very strong and too much of it will actually cause constipation which would be counter productive. : ) What are Superfoods and why did you take them? Superfoods are foods that have a much higher level of nutrients than other foods. Many of these are adaptogens which not only ‘adapt’ to their environment to survive but are also able to adapt to our body to redress its imbalances. Superfoods contain large amounts of bioavailable minerals that are stored in their stems, leaves, and roots. They have an incredibly broad range of nutrients and have extraordinary medicinal and life-giving properties. Green Vibrance is a superfood complex powder that has been on the market since 1992 and has a reputation for being of the highest quality. I have taken this product off and on for years but increased my usage of it prior to Transition to help prepare myself for the juice fast. I continued to drink it regularly during and after the juice fast. Green superfoods have the highest concentration of easily digestible nutrients, fat burning compounds, phyto-chemicals, healthy bacteria and many other vitamins and minerals that protect and repair the body. In short, it is among some of the best food you can provide your cells.

Post Fast Report: August 21, 2011 It has been three weeks since my 2011 juice fast ended. I feel better than I have in my entire life. I have not gained a single pound of weight, remain caffeine free and have more energy than I did when I was drinking 4 cups of coffee a day. I have made some serious dietary modifications from what I was doing prior to the fast and have been tracking my calorie intake nearly everyday. Calorie counting is not something that I have always done, but coming off the fast I wanted to look carefully at this and take advantage of the progress that I made during the fast. Being aware of the calories I consume has made keeping the weight off more a matter of math than anything else and looking at weight control from this perspective is actually kind of fun. I now look at anything I eat in terms of numbers and whether or not I can afford the calories or not. At first it seems like a lot of work to account for everything you eat, but after awhile you automatically know approximately how much of a food you can eat because you are mentally programmed to think about food in terms of cups, ounces, grams and how many calories, fats, carbs, and protein certain foods have. I am really enjoying it. My strength has increased dramatically and I am exercising at pretty close to Olympic triathlon training level. It feels real good to be back where I know I should be and I am looking forward to racing. I have also had two additional colonics done after the 30 days fast, for a total of five. I think I am safe to say that I am pretty well cleaned out and my colonic therapist pretty much agrees. We are considering doing a documentary together on colonic hydrotherapy in the near future. I think that would be great. I am certain that this year’s juice fast has been the best to date that I have accomplished and I am happy to be able to share the experience. We have spent most of August editing and preparing the journal for publishing and I am hoping that the “July 2011 - 30 Day Juice Fast” will serve others as well as it has served me. Juice Fast Foods Not all the combinations below include exact amounts because they vary according to individual taste and the amount that is made. Listing fresh juice blends could make a whole book in itself. More detailed recipes can be obtained easily by doing an Internet search or purchasing a book on juicing. A little exploring is called for to find the blend that is right you. Be aware of fruit juices and sweet juices, which contain a lot of calories. Some days I needed more calories than others and if weight loss is an objective, then pay close attention to the calorie content of the juices being consumed. Just like balancing a checkbook, careful accounting is essential for the most effective weight loss results during a juice fast. Sometimes I will make enough juice to last 2 days refrigerated. Since it is fresh and not pasteurized, I either drink it within 2 days or make a new batch. The longer juice sits, the less vitality it is going to provide. The idea is to drink it as soon as you juice it. However, depending on one's schedule this may not always work and thus is the reason that I will sometimes juice a liter or two. Fresh Juice Blends • • • • • • • • • • •

Orange Juice Carrot, Orange Carrot, Celery, Spinach 2 Fresh Squeezed Lemons / 20 oz. Frozen Juices Frozen juices are convenient but less than optimal. Juice is always the most potent when it is freshly juiced and consumed immediately. However, frozen juices are closer to fresh juices than pasteurized juice on the store shelf. Pasteurized juices are heated to kill bacteria prior to being shelved, which destroys more of the life force. I always avoid pasteurized juices on a juice fast and almost never drink them when I am not fasting. Some health food stores carry canned frozen grape, lemon, cranberry and orange juice that has not been pasteurized and is certified organic. This is the closest to the quality of fresh juice that you are going to get without juicing it yourself. In the common grocery store chains, most of the canned frozen juice has additives like high fructose corn syrup and other items not conducive to an optimal juice fast. They generally carry canned frozen orange juice that is made with just oranges, but almost everything else in the canned frozen juice section has additives. Things are changing though and if your local grocery

store has a health food aisle with a frozen foods section you might find some certified organic canned frozen juice that you can keep in your freezer for a back up or a day that you just don't feel like juicing. Broths Broths can be purchased or homemade. For years I used organic chicken broth from the grocery store health food aisle, heated in a pot with fresh organic vegetables during juice fasting. It works fine and with some liquid amino acids like Braggs, it can add a nice dinner like touch to the evening. I did not use a chicken broth at all for my July 2011 juice fast because I wanted to do this fast with only vegetable broths or vegetable broths with fish. Did it make a big difference? I don't think so. I used fresh wild salmon in my broths because of the flavor and the fatty acids in the fish. Fish broths provide nutrients, carbohydrates, proteins and fats, are very low in cholesterol and can completely eliminate hunger if it occurs. I think broths are essential to a juice fast, and they have always been a part of my juice fast. I can get much of the nutrition of the fish without having to actually eat the meat. Example: Wild Sockeye Salmon Broth • • • • • • • • •

10 oz. Wild Sockeye Salmon ½ Bunch of Kale 4 Large Carrots Large Beet Bunch of Spinach Large Onion 4-6 Garlic Cloves 4 Small Red potatoes Cayenne Pepper

Instructions: In a large pot, toss in the harder produce, which are the potatoes, carrots, onions, beets and garlic. Bring them to a boil for about 15-20 minutes or until you can easily poke the potatoes to the center with a fork. Throw in the rest of the vegetables and the fish and boil for another 15-20 minutes. This is enough broth for a couple of days. I use a ladle and pour the broth through a strainer into a large coffee cup and then get excited! : ) I once used wild dover sole as a substitute for salmon during this juice fast but overall I liked the salmon much better.
