and standard notation.
Guitar Forum
●
Guitar Licks are
musical phrases, parts of a melody or an improvised solo. ●
Riffs are short melodic phrases that are often repeated (in a solo or as accompaniment). The most well known guitar riff is probably Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water'.
●
Patterns are even shorter musical phrases.
You can compare licks, riffs and patterns to paragraphs, sentences and words of a conversation. So be careful how you use the licks, you don't want to sound like someone else or talk nonsense. Just copying the licks is not the way to go because you'll sound unnatural. Use the material in a creative way. Try to understand the thinking behind a lick and incorporate the concept in your improvisations rather then just copying the lick. Play with the different aspects of a lick: try changing the rhythm, the tonality or the position. You'll learn more and it makes it easier for you to get a lick in your fingers.

Don't just copy the solos, but use them to discover the way the musician in question thinks. Try to find the concepts used in the guitar solo and give these concepts a place in your own improvisation. A studied solo is easy to forget after some time. Most Helpful Customer Reviews 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING and CUTTING EDGE!, January 2, 2000 By David Rothblatt (lake bluff, IL) - See all my reviews This is with out a doubt, one of my favorite albums. Kurt's playing is fresh and inventive. I was impressed with his treatment of standards and his unique improvisational approach. Comment Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Tasty, November 29, 2004 By Kenneth James Michael MacLean (Ann Arbor, MI USA) - See all my reviews In this recording of all jazz standards, Kurt Rosenwinkle provides a number of fresh, tasty solos which make listening to this CD a pleasure. Unfortunately, the piano player isn't quite up to speed on this date, playing a little behind the beat and struggling a bit on his solos. Most people probably won't even notice, however, as the guitarist more than makes up for this slight deficiency with his distinctive sound and deft playing. KR excels especially on the last track, "Conception," which is worth the price of the disk all on its own. All in all, a date which is sure to please straight-ahead jazz lovers and, perhaps, may influence cross-over audiences to delve further into the rich, century-old tradition of jazz music.

"The Next Step" was my first KR album. KR does stand out from the rests as he chooses his notes to speak, rather than just going over some chord changes. In this (mostly) standard songs, he and the band managed to bring the music up the average jam session by their ability and mastery on their respective instruments. It still has the jam session feeling, enough balance of relax-tension to make it a good album. Comment Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? Bill Frisell's Guitar Rig This page is about the guitars, amps, effects and other guitar equipment that Bill Frisell likes to use. More Bill Frisell: Bill Frisell Guitar Tabs BillGuitars Frisell's Guitars Klein Electric Guitars
Bill Frisell has 2 Klein electric guitars. The one he uses the most has a chambered spruce body and a rosewood neck. The guitar has 4 pickups: a Seymour Duncan JB pickup in bridge position, a Bartolini 5J floating pickup in the middle, a Telecaster pickup at the neck and a piezo pickup in the bridge. The piezo pickup has a separate output so he can mix 'fuzzedout' sound with 'almost acoustic' sounds. Bill uses the bridge pickup most of the time with the tone not rolled off.

Frisell owns 3 guitars built by Steven Andersen. The first one was given to him by cartoonist Gary Larson (The Far Side), for whom he provided the soundtrack for a Far Side television special. He liked the guitar so much that he asked Steven to build a model 17 archtop for him and later a small model 14 archtop for on the road (nicknamed 'Little Archie').

Editorial Reviews Amazon.com This rising jazz guitar star writes unlikely music. Equally mysterious, eerie, contemplative, serene, buoyant, and forlorn, Kurt Rosenwinkel's music follows no discernible fashion. Though he's influenced by Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell, Rosenwinkel's second Verve release (the follow-up to 2000's Enemies of Energy) more aptly recalls the early ECM recordings of guitarist John Abercrombie and drummer Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition band. Steeped in unusual tunings, zigzagging melodies, and a highly sensitive and loosely supercharged band, The Next Step works, especially for those patient enough to dig through its dense fabric. An equal number of post-bop workouts and haunting ballads occupy the CD, but even when the musicians (saxophonist Mark Turner, drummer Jeff Ballard, bassist Ben Street) are in full wail, a sense of fragile contemplation marks the music. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000053U8U/jazzguitartk44-20 (4 di 9)15/09/2009 11.07.11
Amazon.com: The Next Step: Kurt Rosenwinkel: Music
The intricate "Zhivago" and "A Shifting Design" show Rosenwinkel's unique guitar and compositional personality--his fingers and his mind seem as one, almost as if he doesn't really need a band to consummate his music. And when he sings (wordlessly) along with his probing guitar designs, he rides high over the band while seeming deep in his own head. The ballads--"Paths of the Heart," "Use of Light," and the beginning of "A Shifting Design"--perfectly capture some sci-fi deep space silence, where abandoned crafts drift in the darkness of a black vacuum. But Rosenwinkel also bumps and boogies like mad on "Filters," dedicated to Wes Montgomery, which features dynamite Turner-Rosenwinkel interplay and a gripping, hot-as-coals melody. For the title track, Rosenwinkel is on piano, and he sounds for all the world like a Chick Corea composition before it blasts off into a hardy, free-blues shuffle. Quixotic, cerebral, and a bit magical, The Next Step plots the unusual path of this freethinking guitarist. --Ken Micallef

Most Helpful Customer Reviews 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars behold the axe of rosenwinkel!!!, April 7, 2001 By James H. Timber-Giboyeaux (Puerto Rico) - See all my reviews The happy-hat rumbero looks of the CD stirred my curiosity about what was in there to look for. I just bought this cd and casually began to listen the music within. The casual scenario did not last. The music of Kurt Rosenwinkel commands attention. I have not heard music of this kind since the early Abercrombie ECM recordings, specifically Characters, the Abercrombie Quartet, Dejohnette's Directions and the New Directions band. I thought this kind of jazz artistry was long gone history. Rosenwinkell's fond of experimentation and beautiful melodies are important attributes of this young musician to which we can add outstanding composition skills. I am quite interested in the musical career of this guy which I believe would have a long and fruitful future. Comment Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? Yes No (Report this)
8 of 8 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Continued growth for a great artist., January 12, 2001 By John S. (Long Island, NY USA) - See all my reviews I first got into Kurt's music through finding an advanced promo copy of the Enemies of Energy. It totally knocked me out with it's compositional originality and with the very strong solo voices of the quintet. I really felt a depth and vision in this music that is all too rare among the many highly competent jazz artists that record nowadays. It's a quartet date, so Scott Kinsey's keyboard work from Enemies is no longer part of the sound, but that is not a problem. Kurt's brilliant guitar playing is more prominent that it was on Enemies, and on the title track he plays piano (also brilliantly), rather than guitar. The quartet is rounded out by Mark Turner on sax, Jeff Ballard on drums, and Ben Street on bass. All I can say to a prospective buyer of the Next Step is that it is music of a very high order, and its well worth getting into. The only other relative newcomer (as a leader)on the scene that turns me on this much is Avishai Cohen. Buy this disc! Comment Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? Kurt's use of phrasing, sound, lines and tunes are a true personal thing , not to mention the whole bands subtle interaction and vibe. I recently saw him in Boston in a different context and he just really has his own sound happening, no matter what group he's in.

A very common chord substitution in jazz is the tritone substitution. Tritone = #4 (or b5) interval
A tritone substitution is the use of a dominant chord that is 6 half steps higher or lower

from the original dominant chord. Tritone substitutes are useful for both chordal playing and single note improvisation. Take for example the G7 chord: G B D F The 2 most important notes of this chord are the 3 (B) and the b7 (F) (if you didn't know this already I suggest you read the guitar chord tutorial first). The 3 and the b7 of a dominant chord are a tritone apart. A tritone is a symmetrical interval, it is precisely in the middle of the chromatic scale. This being the case we change the 3 for the b7 and the b7 for the 3 and fill in the 1 and 5 to get a new dominant chord. This chord would be Db7: Db F Ab B

(more precisely: Db F Ab Cb)
So compared to the G7 chord the B and F changed places. Knowing that the F is the 3 and the B is the b7, it's easy to fill in the 1 and 5 (again if you don't agree with me about this being easy, read the guitar chord tutorial first). The 1 is Db and the 5 is Ab. Relative to the G7 this is a b5 and a b9, so this means that the Db7 can substitute an altered G7 chord. What scale would you play on the Db7. The first dominant scale that comes to mind is the mixolydian scale (if this scale sounds like Chinese to you, read the tutorial about guitar scales). Problem here is the 4 of the Db mixolydian scale: the Gb or F#. This note is the major 7 of G, while we need a b7 for G dominant. The solution: raise the 4 (F#) with a half step to the #4 (G). A mixolydian scale with a #4 is called a 'lydian dominant' scale. It's actually the 4th degree of an Ab melodic scale or the 5th degree of a G altered scale. Db Lydian Dominant

In the diagram above you can see that Db lydian dominant = G altered = Ab melodic. Here's the lydian dominant scale on the guitar neck:
The orange dots are the chord roots. If you have troubles finding the other positions of this guitar scale, try the guitar scale finder. Here are some lydian dominant ideas:

Jimmy Raney was born in 1927 in Kentucky. His first big job was in 1948 with Woody Herman. Jimmy Raney has a relaxed and confident guitar style and a quiet tone. His phrases are bop influenced, but his sound is in the tradition of the cool jazz. His best work is together with Stan Getz with whom he worked in 1951-1952 and 1962-1963 and in the Red Norvo Trio (1953-1954). After his last work with Stan Getz he disappeared from the music scene, but had a revival in the 70s. Jimmy Raney has a guitar playing son, Doug Raney, whom he made several recordings with. Jimmy died in 1995.

II V I Lick 1) This fast lick is transcribed from Jimmy Raney's solo improvisation on 'Watch What Happens', as played on the album Live in Tokyo (click to listen to a sample mp3). The lick begins with an Em7 arpeggio, followed by an F#m7 arpeggio (more about this improvisation technique in this guitar lesson). The phrase starting on the second half of the second beat is a chromatic approach to the next phrase.
Jimmy Raney published a book with transcriptions of some of his guitar solos: Jimmy Raney Solos By Jimmy Raney. Note-for-note transcriptions from Volume 29 of the Aebersold series. Level: intermediate, advanced. Book. See more info...

Here's the sheet music with guitar tabs for the theme of 'Dolemite', written by Scott Henderson and recorded on the album Tore Down House. Scott Henderson, born in 1954, was originally influenced by rock guitarists like Jimmy Page and Jimy Hendrix, but also by blues greats like Albert King and Buddy Guy. In 1980 he started studying guitar with Joe Diorio at the Guitar Institute of Technology, where he later became a teacher himself. In 1984 Scott Henderson formed a band called Tribal Tech, together with bass player Gary Willis. In 1985 he started touring and recording with Chick Corea's Elektric Band. He also played with violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and Joe Zawinul. In 1994 Scott Henderson made a transition from jazz to more blues orientated music when he recorded the album Dog Party. This album was voted best blues album in Guitar Player. Recommended listening: Illicit
The structure of Dolemite is that of a 12 bar blues with a little variation in the 9th measure, but the theme itself is more surprising. Scott uses a lot of hammers and pulls, which I indicated with a slur. B and RB in bar 10 stands for bend and release bend. Common bends are notated with an upgoing arrow. Listen to the Sibelius file (if you've got a version of Sibelius), but obviously it doesn't swing as much as Scott's version.
