First Jazz Performance by Dean Sorenson Standard of Excellence First Jazz Performance is modeled after the First Performance series by Bruce Pearson and Barrie Gott. It is a collection of ten grade ½ jazz charts, but with the addition of optional concert band instrumentation. This highly versatile and flexible book will encourage and support students in their first explorations of jazz style and performance, whether in a jazz ensemble or a concert band setting. Minimum Instrumentation:  1st/2nd Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, 1st/2nd Trumpet, 1st Trombone, Piano, Bass, and Drum Set 1

Jazz Ensemble Method The Standard of Excellence Jazz Ensemble Method is the ideal way to teach jazz. The method is divided into three sections, each representing a different jazz style: Rock, Latin, and Swing. Each section presents rhythm and improvisation studies followed by correlated full jazz ensemble charts —13 full jazz charts in all! Easy-to-use RHYTHM STUDIES, IMPROVISATION STUDIES, and special rhythm section FOR…ONLY exercises ensure student success. The approach is non-theoretical and aurally based. Each part book comes with an accompaniment CD, providing students with opportunities to listen to and play along with professional jazz musicians. Like all great jazz players students learn to play jazz by listening! Ideal for group or individual study, all charts and studies are playable by students who have completed at least two levels of a comprehensive method. Books are available for standard jazz ensemble instrumentation, plus flute, clarinet, French horn, and tuba! ADVANCED Jazz Ensemble Method The Standard of Excellence ADVANCED Jazz Ensemble Method picks up where the Jazz Ensemble Method leaves off. Building upon the rhythm-centered pedagogy introduced in the first book, the ADVANCED method focuses on improvisation. Concepts introduced and reinforced in IMPROVISATION STUDIES and ADVANCED IMPROVISATION STUDIES are applied in charts for full jazz ensemble. Designed as a comprehensive jazz course for group or individual study, it can be used by students who have completed the first book, or any students with intermediate-level instrumental skills and at least one year of jazz ensemble experience.

Jazz Combo Session Finally, a flexible collection of pieces that cut to the core of the jazz experience — playing in a combo! Standard of Excellence Jazz Combo Session is a collection of jazz compositions that can be played in a wide variety of ‘combo’ settings, with any combination of instruments. Includes parts for all woodwind, brass, and string instruments, in addition to guitar, piano, bass, drums, and vibes. Kjos Multiple Option Scoring allows tunes to be played as solos, duets, trios, or quartets, as well as by traditional jazz combos, concert bands, string or full orchestras, or any size ensemble! Play-along ACCOMPANIMENT CDs in each student book, recorded by professional jazz musicians, include a first mix with rhythm section accompaniment featuring solo trumpet playing the melody & solo sax playing the harmony.
