A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR To a l l his friends in Magic The generous response of the magic fraternity to my f i r s t efforts and contributions to magic l i t e r a t u r e , " H e l l o SuckerI" or "The Three Shell Game," has prompted this work my second dealing with another subject entitled "The Jaysee Color Changing S i l k R o u t i n e . " I n offering you this l i t t l e routine I should l i k e to state that I do not claim any o r i g i n a l i t y for the actual e f f e c t , a s that is perhaps as old as time immemorial,but I do claim that the routine here given is my own to the best of my knowledge and was f i r s t presented by myself in this form back in 1934 This effect and routine d i f f e r s in that you may show both hands empty and devoid of a l l apparatus,at the Start and F i n i s h of the effect. When i n possession of the seorets and the moves described i n this book,many other combinations are possible and should suggest themselves to the performer after reading the d i r e c t i o n s . The author b e l i e v e s , a l o n g with several other well known professional magicians,that i t is one of the cleanest cut color ohanging routine to be obtained,and in closing wishes to thank Mr. William H.Hanna for the valuable assistance given, with several of the moves find the f i n e i l l u s t r a t i o n s in this book. Push this knotted red s i l k in Hank Tube starting with the longer end,so that the knotted end goes in the tube l a s t . Wrap s i l k aroxmd idex f i n g e r . l e a v i n g corner p r o t r u d i n g . u n t i l s i l k is entirely wound around f i n g e r t i p , k e e p i n g i t as small as p o s s i b l e . Then tuck in remaining corner. The s i l k should look like one. in F i g . 5 . Place this b a l l in fold of l e f t coat s l e e v e , j u s t at the bend of arm,covering same with the sleeve as i n , F i g . 6 : Drop Hank Tube in l e f t coat sleeve with the loaded red s i l k facing o u t , F i g . 7 . Get the s i l k into right hand i n the act of pulling up s l e e v e s . This is important. Now bring both hands together in front of you and well away from the body;Right hand now grasps the protruding corner of balled s i l k , and both hands seperate bringing the w h i t e s i l k into view as i n , F i g . 1 0 .

GtTTING
From the audience point of view,both hands were shown empty and a white s i l k produced, from the a i r . This is very old and I do not know who the originator was,but i t i s always good. Most magicians are f a m i l i a r with i t . Be sure not to lower the arm,which has the tube in the sleeve during this production, neither should the arm be held s t i f f . Free movements are possible without lowering the arm enough to drop the tube. Now oall attention to the fact that f o r the purpose of i d e n t i f i c a t i o n , y o u w i l l tie a knot i n the white s i l k . Then make the following knot which looks real but i t r e a l l y is a s l i p knot. Run the s i l k between the index and second fingers of the l e f t hand allowing about 1 / 3 of the s i l k to come t h r u , , F i g . I I . Then bend the third and fourth fingers in to palm as in F i g . 1 2 . Right hand brings i t s end up to t h u m b , F i g . 1 3 . Reach through loop thus formed and pull the end hanging behind the hand through this l o o p , F i g . I 4 . You w i l l f i n d the middle or second f i n g e r is in the loop back of the hand and out of sight of audience. Leave middle or secord f i n g e r in the loop, hold onto the portion of hank by this f i n g e r and pull knot t i g h t , b u t not too tight as in F i g . 15'. Your hank now has a knot about 1 / 3 the way down as shown in F i g . 1 6 . Immediately take the s i l k in right hand and raise it up and out from l e f t side as i f showing it to the audience. Face exactly to the front in this move,and a l l attention w i l l swing with your right hand,the l e f t hand now drops to your side and hank tube f a l l s into your hand.

TUBE-
The hand must be lowered s l o w l y , f i n g e r s cupped s l i g h t l y . Do not be afraid of loosing the tube. Do not hurry,the drop of the arm and tube w i l l f a l l perfectly,and without any sound as in F i g . 1 7 . which shows the position of arms and the body. Bring right hand with si 11c down. Close hand containing t u b e , F i g . 1 8 , a n d it w i l l be i n perfect position with red s i l k downward. Start to push white knot foremost thru.hand, but really into the tube as in F i g . 1 9 . Keep pushing s i l k into t\ibe, while doing so, work the s l i p knot off the silk,unknown to the audience,about the time that portion of the s i l k is to enter the tube. This move is of c.ourse forcing the red s i l k out of the tube,but do not let i t come out of the hand u n t i l knotted portion of the white s i l k has entered the tube.Then release red s i l k . I t w i l l jump from the hand and show the knot in the red s i l k , F i g . 2 0 . Keep pushing white s i l k into tube and hand and keep pulling red one out u n t i l white s i l k is entirely i n tube and red completely out of tube,but s t i l l held in hand by one corber like F i g . 2 1 . Keep poking white s i l k and turn to l e f t , i n sert middle f i n g e r in tube and at the same time thumb catches side of tube and removes it from hand unseen by a u d i e n c e , F i g . 2 2 . Now right hand holds tube as in F i g . 2 3 . S i l k ' s t i l l hanging from l e f t hand. Right hand now with tube comes over to red s i l k and starts to stroke it down,at that instant the tube i s dropped in l e f t coat sleeve.See P i g . 2 4 , 2 5 , 4 : 2 6 , f o r this move. Follow this through to the knotted end of red s i l k in one continuous move without any h e s i t a t i o n .

Take hank in right hand and show l e f t empty, F i g . 2 7 . Untie knot and show s i l k . F i g . 2 8 . be sure to keep the elbows bent. The effect so far, has been that you have produced a white s i l k magically,and that for the purpose of i d e n t i f i c a t i o n a knot was tied in white s i l k , (Stress this f a c t ) which was pushed through the hands and changed color, and the knot is s t i l l in the s i l k , j u s t the color being changed. From here on the routine is repeated only minus the knot. See above i l l u s t r a t i o n s f o r moves. This time i f the spectators have a suspicion that two s i l k s are used,the white one should have a knot,but when you change the red s i l k , minus the knot,back to w h i t e , i t too is without a knot. A most convincing routine. The idea of getting rid of the tube is good and most magicians are easily fooled by i t . Be sure to practise these moves well and you w i l l f i n d that they blend together without a suspicious move of anykind. Now to get back to the f i n i s h of the routine. The red s i l k has been changed back to white,and the tube disposed of in the above fashion, and the hands shown empty. Again s i l k is held a s , F i g . 2 8 . Allow right hand corner to drop,hank is held by one corner in l e f t hand. Drop l e f t hand slowly,take a bow and tube f a l l s into hand holding s i l k , w h i c h covers tube and both are pocketed. WRINKLES: After the tube is hand f i r s t and you start the hands can once more be shown by using the following moves 29-30-31-32-33-34-and 35-
dropped in the color change,the empty,if you wish, shown by F i g s . N o .

With the middle or second f i n g e r start poking the s i l k in the hand containing the tube as i n , F i g . 2 9 . Bend third and fourth f i n g e r under the tube ( l e f t hand and turn tube as shown by dotted l i n e ) F i g . 3 0 . , t o the thumb palm position i n right hand as F i g . 3 1 - 3 2 . Of course this is done with back of right hand to audience and takes but a fraction of a second to accomplish. I t appears as i f you imagine you hear someone say that there was something i n your hands. Now follow through as in F i g . 3 3 . Then drop tube in l e f t hand again as shown i n F i g . 3 4 , and continue to draw s i l k through hand as i n F i g . 3 5 . Then go on with the color change. In performing this t r i c k in the middle of a program have tube loaded in the right coat pocket. Tube on top of the s i l k to be color changed.Reach in pocket,insert middle f i n g e r in t u b e ( S i l k end) and bring out with the hank. Take s i l k in l e f t hand and do moves as in the Figs.24-25 and 2 6 . Then knot the white hank. Another idea which is very effective is a color changing ribbon. The same moves are used as with the s i l k . Or place four knots on the ribbon and pass it through the hand. I t w i l l then emerge free of a l l knots. Various other ideas and effects are possible with this routine and w i l l suggest themselves to the perform er after reading these moves and performing this f i n e routine.
