Before you dive in, take a moment to go over some very basic Japanese pronunciation (next). If you take a few seconds to look over these hints, you’ll sound like a native speaker in no time!
PRONUNCIATION
sh(i) *in middle of word
a ≈ ah e ≈ eh i ≈ ee o ≈ oh u ≈ oo ii (double i) oo (double o) ou byo, kyo, nyo, etc. kyu, nyu, gyu, etc.
s(u) *at end of word

When "sh(i)" is in the middle of a word, "i" is almost silent. So "ash(i)ta" sounds like "ashta." Similarly, "hanash(i)te" sounds like "hanashte.”
When "s(u)" is at the end of a word, "u" is almost silent. So "des(u)" sounds like "des." Similarly, "shimas(u)" sounds like "shimas."
