Jaimini sutram classifies planets into karakas based on the degree of their longititude. These karakas are different from Sthira Karakas or Naisargika Karakas or even Bhava Karakas. They are called Chara Karakas as they differ according to longitude and hence are different for each individual or Moving/Chara. Like other karakas, planets which become chara karakas affect various aspects of the inidividual’s life. Their basic strength, and association with other karakas provide for various Raja Yogas and Duryogas. Their position in the various bhavas can also help us determine the trend of a particular period while studying rasi dasas such as Narayana Dasa, Chara dasa or Shoola Dasa. Atmakaraka (AK) The planet with the highest longitude within any rashi in the native’s D1 chart assumes the role of the AK. For eg, if among all planets in a chart, Mars is at 29 26′ while the other planet’s longitudes are all below 29 26′, then Mars will be the AK for this native. AK is the atma (soul) karaka (doer/significator). It shows the true reason or the desire for this particular birth of the soul. -The AK has a lot of say in the general perception of the native towards their own life. How they perceive their life’s journey and their role in it. The aspects of life they will struggle with the most. - The AK, if retrograde, denotes a strong desire behind this birth. - A malefic as AK shows a high degree of spiritual development. It also gives momentous trials and tribulations in this life which leave a deep, lasting impact on the native’s psyche. - Debility of AK or a weakly placed AK can indicate a troubled, weak soul. The strength of the AK bodes well for the spiritual struggles during this particular life and it should ideally be supported by the Lagna lord. - Although combustion is generally thought to weaken a planet, for AK combustion deems well. Closeness to the naisargika AK Sun illuminates and supports the AK’s spiritual journey. -While the Vimshottari dasa of the AK is tough and makes the native more spiritual, the Narayana Dasa of the AK or signs aspecting it brings achievements.

Amatyakaraka (AmK) The planet with the next highest longitude after the AK shall be the AmK. -It is often regarded as the minister or advisor of the AK (Amatya means minister or bureaucrat), bureaucrat) in that it works to fulfil the agenda of the AK. -It shows us the method often used by the native to achieve the goal represented by the AK. -The AmK finds much use in career analysis as well. -Conjunction of the AmK and the AK gives a Jaimini Rajayoga. Even a connection between the Amk and the dipositor of the AK gives powerful results. - As the AmK is supposed to aid the AK’s journey, in the Rasi and D9 chart both of them should not be placed in dusthanas from each other. Bhratrukaraka (BK) The planet with the next highest longitude after the AmK is the Bhratrukaraka (BK). The naisargika karakas for younger and older brothers are Mars and Saturn respectively. - Bhratru means Brother in Sanskrit and the BK can be extended to signify the native’s brothers and sisters. - Bhratrukaraka, also known as Guru Karaka, is significant when analysing the native’s connection with their teacher or anyone who imparts knowledge to them. It helps determine how the native will receive knowledge and how his/her spiritual connection with their Guru be. -Its relationship with the AK as well as its placement in Navamsa has to be checked. Matrukaraka (MK) The planet with the fourth highest longitude is called the chara Matrukaraka (MK). The naisargika karaka for the mother is Moon. -It represents the mother and after the AK is one of the most important charakarakas, as the mother brings the soul into this world. -The Matrukaraka and the fourth from Arudha Lagna can be studied for afflictions to the mother - The Matrukaraka can also be analysed to find about the native’s relationship with their mother or motherly figures.

Putrakaraka (PK) The planet with the fifth highest longitude is called the Putrakaraka. The naisargika PK is Jupiter. - The PK is responsible for children, creation, luck, intelligence etc. - The conjunction of the AK and PK or mutual aspect makes a Raja Yoga. -The conjunction of the AmK and PK or mutual aspect makes a Raja Yoga. -The conjunction of the Darakaraka (DK) and PK or mutual aspect makes a Raja Yoga. -PK and fifth lord in conjunction or mutual aspect makes a Raja Yoga. -The position of the PK in the saptamsa chart is also important. Placement in a dusthana (especially in an inimical rashi), in Marana Karaka Sthana (MKS) or debilitation is unfavourable for progeny related matters. Gnatikaraka (GK) The planet with the sixth highest longitude is the GK. The GK is responsible for cousins, relatives in general, strife, enemies, diseases etc. In sthira karakas various planets hold these portfolios for eg. Mercury represents maternal relatives. - The GK, its placement, state etc. can point to the extent and cause of distress in the native’s life. -The GK Darakaraka (DK) The planet with the seventh highest longitude is the DK. It is responsible for spousal relations, partnerships, -Fifth lord and DK when conjunct or with mutual aspect on each other, give rise to a Raja Yoga. -AK, or AmK or PK and DK when conjunct or with mutual aspect on each other, give rise to a Raja Yoga. -The position of the darakaraka in rashi as well as navamsha can be used to time marriage when using Jaimini’s chara dasha.
