The Moorbel Hall Markets will be held this Saturday with a new Winter starting time of 9am, to allow the frost to melt a little, and will finish up at 1pm. Canowindra@home will be meeting at the Canowindra Services Club June 30 @ 6.30pm. This group has reformed to represent the wine and food producers of the area and all are encouraged to attend, support and participate. At the recent AGM Tom Ward was appointed President, Katie Kelly Vice President, Margaret Wallington Treasurer and Helen Tinney/Trudi Weyman Secretaries. RAILWAY CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS BEGIN A hundred years ago Canowindra was agog with preparations for the opening of the railway on Monday 4 July 1910. A public holiday had been declared not only for Canowindra but also for other Boree Shire towns. The Canowindra Star of 9 July 1910 reported…‘the town was decorated from one end to the other and so effectively that it was almost difficult to recognise that it was quite the same place.’ Five hundred copies of a Souvenir of The Opening of the Cowra to Canowindra Railway were printed after event with twelve photos of the arrival of the first train at the crowded station and street scenes on the opening day. An arch over the main street was built of ‘bales of lucerne, bags of chaff and wheat, hay sheaves, corn and other produce and decorated with greenery and flags, surmounted with the mottos, WELCOME and ADVANCE CANOWINDRA.’ Reprints of this souvenir booklet will be on sale at the Railway Centenary Ball on Saturday 3 July and at the Billimari Picnic on 4 July. It is interesting to see how Canowindra’s streetscape has changed since then. Also on sale at the Ball and Billimari will be souvenir tea towels with a picture of the first train and official banquet menu, and reprints of the book, Canowindra Celebrates One Hundred Years, published in 1939. There are still some tickets left for the Ball which promises to be a great event with prizes for best period costume, intermission entertainment, railway decorations and a presentation of the Cowra-Eugowra line story by Lawrance Ryan. RAILWAY CENTENARY BALL: organised by the Canowindra Historical Society, in conjunction with the Canowindra Railway Centenary Committee, will be held on Saturday 3 July. Tickets are $15 and available at the Visitors Information Centre Age of Fishes, or by cheque and stamped addressed envelope to Centenary Ball Secretary, 97 Ryall Street, Canowindra. Phone 6344 1817. BYO basket supper. Intermission entertainment. Awards for best dressed with historical theme. BREAKFAST BY CANOWINDRA LIONS CLUB Canowindra Lions Club will be putting on a barbecue breakfast before the Vintage Cars begin their procession to Billimari Hall. Breakfast will start at 8:30am at Memorial Park Gaskill Street Canowindra. Billimari Picnic An old fashioned picnic and entertainment will be held on the grounds of the Billimari Hall from 10am to celebrate the first train from Cowra to Canowindra through Billimari on 4 July 1910. Displays of railway memorabilia in Billimari Hall and grounds.

All students need to read to improve the quality of their syntax, punctuation and spelling. Constant reading is invaluable and it helps provide students will models for writing, as well as opening new worlds to them to improve their lateral thinking skills. Students should read for at least half an hour each day and if they do so, most will find that they can complete a reasonably‐sized novel by the end of the holidays. For those students to whom reading does not come easily, smaller blocks of time given over to reading to begin with should make it easier. After all, that old question, 'How do you eat an elephant?' Answer: 'One bite at a time', applies just as aptly to reading. Again, we encourage parents to sit down and read with your young person ‐ shared reading is a wonderful experience and it only gets better as your child grows older because they begin to read things that you might be interested in. Many of our students would have seen the films ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and the ‘Narnia’ series, however, there is nothing like reading these in their original novel form. The eternal question that English teachers are asked is, ‘Why can’t we just watch the film, instead of reading the book?’ The answer is very simple: novels and reading them, provide excellent models for writing and language that films lack. Good writers are exposed to a wide range of writing by others - so READ, READ, READ, READ!!! ☺ CHS Head Teacher English Helen Uren ‐Randall

TIGERS ROMP HOME AGAINST COWBOYS Obviously the Tigers recovered well after the Ball on Friday night to romp home against the Cowboys in Sunday’s Round 10 match against and at Gooloogong. The Tigers never looked bothered in the 68-14 victory. Led by man of the match Mick Walker, the Tigers pack had too much size and speed for the smaller Cowboys team. Canowindra led 22-4 at the break and piled on the points in the second half for a comfortable win. The Cowboys never gave up and scored the try of the match with a one handed pick up and fancy footwork leaving several players sprawled on the ground. Canowindra 68 (Charles Lawrence 2, Rob at 7pm Burn 2, Waihe Upeguito 2, Kepu Nathan, Brian Moss, David Bermingham, Nick Whatman, Andrew Pull, and Dan Walker 1 each. Rob Burn kicked 10 goals) def Gooloogong 14. OPEN JUNIORS: The Open Juniors side had a real arm wrestle against Cabonne United in the first half. The Cabonne side played with a lot more composure this week and stuck it to the young tigers. Inspiring words from Coach Whatman at half time saw the tigers edge out to a 20-4 lead and hold on to win the match. LEAGUE TAG: After the week off the Tigresses take on competition leaders Grenfell this week. COMING EVENTS: Sunday 11 July Round 12 Canowindra vs Eugowra at Tom Clyburn Oval, the Tigers Kathy Davis shows us how to limbo at will be holding their Sponsor’s Day.
